Exclusive: Obama hits Clinton -- harder

BREAKING NEWS
From NBC's Andrea Mitchell
Sen. Obama has ESCALATED his criticism of Hillary Clinton -- taking it to political defcon three -- in an exclusive on-camera interview with NBC News.

It is a lot tougher than what he said in the debate -- or in the Iowa newspaper interview yesterday.

During a stakeout outside his senate office, Obama said in part:

"I think what is irresponsible and naive is to have authorized a war without asking how we were going to get out -- and you know I think Senator Clinton hasn’t fully answered that issue.

"The general principle that I was laying out is that we should not be afraid as America to meet with anybody.

"Now, they may not like what we want to hear -- so if I’m talking to the President of Iran, I’m going to inform him that Israel is our stalwart ally, and we are going to do what's necessary to protect them -- that we will not accept a nuclear bomb in Iran, but that doesn’t mean we can’t say that face to face. And obviously, the diplomatic spadework has to be done ahead of time.

"The notion that I was somehow going to be inviting them over for tea next week without having initial envoys meet is ridiculous.

"But the general principle is one that I think Senator Clinton is wrong on -- and that is if we are laying out preconditions that prevents us from speaking frankly to these folks, then we are continuing with Bush-Cheney policies, and I am not interested in continuing that.

"I know that she has said in the past that we have to talk to our enemies -- well that’s what this is about. And if we say that we will not talk to them unless they meet a series of preconditions, then that’s the same position that Bush and Cheney have maintained over the last six years, and it has made us less safe. And that’s what I think is going to be a significant part of this debate in 2008.

"We responded to her in this situation, and I think there is a genuine difference, if there isn’t a difference, then Senator Clinton should explain it. I think that we should talk to everybody.

"That ultimately is what’s going to create the environment in which we can reduce some of the threat levels we are facing. To fail to do that is the same conventional Washington thinking that led many including Senator Clinton to go ahead with the war without having asked adequate questions."

****UPDATE**** Clinton supporters respond to Obama's new criticism by pointing out that Clinton has been very critical of the Bush's Administration policies on diplomacy. Also, her response at the debate -- and in yesterday's skirmish -- was that it doesn't make any sense to pursue vigorous diplomacy without getting the most of it. You just can't promise to meet with world leaders, they say, without conditions.

*** SECOND UPDATE *** The Clinton campaign has now released this statement from Richard Holbrooke, who served as UN ambassador in Bill Clinton's administration: "As she has said many times, Senator Clinton believes we need to engage in vigorous diplomacy after the cowboy approach of the Bush years. She has said she would initiate serious, responsible dialogue with nations with whom we don’t agree in order to further the national security interest of the United States. But she is right not to risk the prestige of the presidency by unconditionally committing to meet with leaders of adversarial nations."

I don’t believe that Hillary has done anything but bash the president.  The more I read about O’bama the more I like what he stands for.  I have yet to see a politician that can keep any of the pre campaign promises.  The only difference from the two parties is the spelling of the names.
Why has noone asked Sen. Obama about being a muslim?  The fact that he grew up in an radical islamic family, and that he is trying to hide it by being a member of a racist church in Chicago.  Hilary Clinton is going to be the next President.  Obama does not have the experience as a politician or a diplomat.   He obviously is trying to distract from his comments and has had over 24 hours to prepre this response and has great writers.  Anyone can look back and say I should have said this and that but Obama, not having the experience is not able to think on his feet.  You DO NOT really want him as a president.
Personally I feel that Obama's response was very thoughtout and well put together. Of course we need to resume talks with other countries. We cannot fail to resume talks with foreign countries and isolate ourselves from them. Is this not what the United States did after War War I? Did we not isolate ourselves from other countries, which in turn eventually brought us into War War II! True, going into war did bring our country out of economic depression, but it also brought along more enemies than friends. Well done Barack Obama, you are exactly the type of leader this country needs and has been waiting for.
This is the reason only 50% of th peole vote. This non issue dust up is nothing more than media theater. It solves nothing and proves nothing.

The question asked was would you talk   yes or no simple enough. The rest is just Hillary puffing out her chest to prove that she is man enough. counter balance that big booty that was on display in the CNN show.

I do suggest that the Obama campaign watch out as the machine hates it when Hillary is attacked. The opposition research that they have been doing will start to come out sooner. They will not make this a 12 round fight before the knock out, but if his insabordination continues, by holloween it could be over as anything in his background that is damning will be fling all over the media. HIllary is ruthless and the people that work for her are even worse.

Be aware Obama   be aware
The media is really making the most of this, are they not?  But, to me, Hillary just lost my vote.  We are all sick and tired of the same old politics in Washington, and we need a big time change.  I think Hillary was awful to do what she did to Obama.
If Senator Clinton has so much experience then she MUST answer why she voted to authorize the war when so many inside and outside of government were saying there was no imminent threat and no WMD.  Her experience is limited to being married to the former president and being a carpetbagger senator from NY.  It is Democrats like her that failed to stand up to the Bush administration on things like the Patriot Act, Guantanimo and the Authorization for War.  If she failed to stand up then as a Senator what can we expect of her as President
Osama has a better chance at beating Clinton than Obama does.
I don't know Carrie. When I hear "preconditions", I'm thinking "Stop enriching uranium...then, we'll talk!" But that's me. I could be wrong.
This country IS in trouble, and I'd rather have someone FRESH that can make a difference!  Look where sticking with the usual has got us.  Obama is better off with less Washington experience as far as I'm concerned.
Howard what is coarse and oversimplified is the GHWB-BC-GWB-HRC approach that we won't talk to people we don't like.

The idea of lower level diplomacy means that we won't meet with you unless you bend over backwards. It is the same arrogance that has empowered jihadi lunatics around the world and the same thinking that led Clinton to vote for the Iraq war.

As a result of this arrogance the world is LESS SAFE than before and the US less safe than before 9/11
It is nothing more than lip service! It is so much easier to analize our situation in Iraq with hind-sightedness.  I know he didn't vote for the war - that's troubles me.  Would he wait until the bombs drop on our soil, or what was he waiting for?  Yes, we had bad info - cool - I understand that, but however the point remains - what conditions would he want before taking some kind of action.  Obama scares me to death.
Obama is full of BS. He talks on both sides of his mouth and says things that people want to hear, he is certainly not ready to be President.
Why do you need political experience to be a good leader?  I guess George Washington was a bad leader?
Obama's definitely hit back on this issue given his comparative lack of foreign policy chops, but he's got to be careful in how he goes about it or he's not only going to look inexperience, he's going to look petulant.  And don't think Clinton's camp isn't working overtime right now to figure out how to do just that.

Whatever he does, it's got to be better than:

"I know that she has said in the past that we have to talk to our enemies -- well that’s what this is about. And if we say that we will not talk to them unless they meet a series of preconditions, then that’s the same position that Bush and Cheney have maintained over the last six years, and it has made us less safe."

Either you're with me or you're wish Bush?  Silly, Manichaen dichotomies are the specialty of the current administration--and not any candidate of who claims to be about change.
Communications is one way to lower world tension and is  NECESSARY.
We cannot go around telling the world they will do things our way or else. This world is a rather large area and there is room for all kinds of different systems. We cannot force our system on the whole world.
Barack Obama RULES!!!! Hillary needs to put her claws back in. She's showing that she is worried about him...I love it! Barack's answer was awesome! He might be inexperienced but he's not retarded! Give him some credit. GO OBAMA!!!!
I dont get this whole thing.  What i got from Clinton was that she would send someone from her office 1st before meeting with other heads of government.  I didnt think she said she was not going to talk to anyone.  I am very confused by this whole thing. I rewatched the debate and I still dont understand this. Tell me if I am wrong Obama said he would meet with them during his 1st year in office while Hillary said she would send a lower level person to meet with them 1st.  Did I miss something ???
Democratic hopefuls should act out of their heart, mind, and conscience. Rather than take strategy lessons from lobbyists/image consultants - they desperately need to communicate effectively with Americans.

I implore all AMericans to visit the FEC website and look at campaign expenses for an eye-opening account of what is really happening behind the scenes - or, check out some newspaper archives: they can be "diary like" - revealing truths that may need to be brought to the forefront of this election.

We were sold short: by the Bush/Cheney White House, by Congress, and even by our own complacency -

We allowed these people to take us to war, to shamefully sacrifice our loved ones, and those of the Iraqi people - for what?

Every one of you should be raising hell, demanding that both Bush & Cheney are impeached. To refuse to do so is the ultimate offense for those who were shuttled off to a war based on pretense and marketed spin.

Oh I see.  You can meet with "Ahmadimwitjihadist" and say "Go F your slimy deranged self" and he can say "Kiss My Camel Loving Azz" in person and that counts a major diplomatic breakthrough.
You know what they say when you underestimate people.  Obama is not the one to underestimate.

He may not have experience, but he's got something just as good if not better, at least in politics.  Money.
I just watched Hardball about this topic. Even Hillary's supporter dodged questions like she does. Instead of answering the question they deflected the blame on Bush and tried to incorrectly frame Obama. The only questions I want directly answered is: 1)If you were so experienced, why didn't you read the NIE report before voting for the war? This was the most important vote of your career!!!! 2)Did you vote for the Iraq war because you wanted to seem PRESIDENIAL at the time or did you believe your were doing the right thing? Bush tricked me isn't a good answer or "PRESIDENTIAL". Can some of the Hillary supporters directly answer my questions without double speak.

Finally...since when does being the First Lady translates into PRESIDENTIAL experience? Does that mean Barbra Bush has MORE presidential experience since she was in the White House for 12 years? About that great Bill Clinton economy...INTERNET BOOM then the BUST...I lost my job and didn't really recover...

I'm independent but I really like Obama
This is what am talking about. See, clarity ... I don't need to add anything more. This is a clear sign of competency in a commander-in-chief ... keep shining Barack!
Talking never works.  Nukes do.

That's why Iran, NK, and the turd world are working on them so hard.
Obama is presidential, intelligent , impressive  and a true representative of the people!
Are these two really the best the Democratic party has to offer?  Seriously?  I'm very disappointed.  They're both green Senators without any other relevant experience (first lady doesn't count!)
Hey, great idea... why don't Obama and Clinton just nit-pick each other apart over minute definitions and after-the-fact over-explanations from the very beginning, turn everyone off--then Edwards can get the nomination, and we can get stuck with four more years of Republican rule.
Obama is like a petulant kid playing in a room full of adults. Did anybody ever suggest that he would be inviting Mussolini over for tea? No. All Hillary said -- sounding much more experienced and rational than he does here -- is that you cannot meet these people without testing the waters, sending envoys, and having preconditions. Obama makes himself look like a fool now when he usurps her position, essentially agrees with her, but still tries to look like there is disagreement on her part. No, Barack, it is you who disagreed first and then backpedaled by agreeing with what she already said: you have send lower level people first. Clinton never said she would never meet with these people Bush-Cheney style. She said she would do it with maturity, diplomacy and decorum. I was intrigued by Obama's candidacy at first, but Hillary is simply more mature and experienced. Obama made a gaffe that he cannot correct. Nice try, though.
Say it isn't so Obama, not you too.  How can you lower your self to Republican standards of attack to your own colleague. Please don't let your experience show and stand aside if you can't handle the pressure. If you are breaking under the stress now what makes you think the presidency is going to be any easier. You still have a future in the Clinton Administration.
What a clear, forceful and on-point answer by Obama, in response to the always over-cautious Clinton's standard attack the day after.  He has the guts to hit back.  I want Obama to be the one to lead our country, and look forward to his forthright and direct communication with the American people during his years in office.
I think Obamas "people" told him to issue this statement to make him look better and to discredit Sen. Clinton. he just needs to let it go now and focus on real issues, not argue over comments made earlier. I guess they will keep going on this until they recieve good feedback for them and negative for Sen. Clinton.
Jim Bob from Milwaukee Wisconsin,

Senator Obama articulated a hypothetical situation with honesty and forth rightfulness.  The only reason this story still has legs is because Hillary Clinton opened the door and let Senator Obama come right in.  He has NEVER said anything remotely about being irresponsible and naive.  But she opened the door and he writing the vision and making it plain.  She distorted what he said in the debate.

...and Obama *should* attack Hillary. She not only supports outsourcing jobs, she and her husband owns part of the largest provider of Indian workers to this country! Those workers take jobs from Amercian's. While 30% of our own software workers and engineers cannot find jobs, why on earth is Hillary Clinton supporting and even funding additional alien workers to take even more Amercian jobs. Hillary Clinton doesn't deserve to be President, she s no friend of the Middle Class and is no friend of working men and women. It's about time someone got after her. This country doesn't need another Bush neocon President. Heck, we don't need a neocon U.S. Senator!
Being a conservative and certainly no fan of HRC,Obama is naive if he can't see that the exit stategy for any war is victory.
It's interesting watching people who obviously don't understand politics or political campaigns comment on this issue.  Hillary, like her or not, was exactlly right on Monday night.  Obama, like him or not, again showed his novice status.  This is why she is going to win the nomination; no one who understands politics or leadership can credibly argue that he has what it takes to lead us in 2009.  Maybe someday.  Maybe.  We don't have time for on-the-job training, folks.  And if you think Obama's comments today showed anything resembling "freshness," then, again, you really are clueless.  That was a speech prepared by his team, who hunkered down over the last two days and tried to figure out how best to counter this latest blow to his credibility as a national figure.  And many of you fell for it.
I still think Hillary is right.  First Obama says that he didn't vote for the war in the first place, now he's saying we shouldn't be afraid to face our enemies because were America.  Sounds contradicting to me.  We should face our enemies, but in a smart way like Hillary said.  We shouldn't go into situations blind folded like Obama is talking about.
Senator Obama showed us all in his statement that not only is he extremely intelligent, well-calculated, and competent (as we already knew), but that years and years of so-called "experience" in what ultimately amounts to a flawed governmental system are uneccessary in order to promote genuine change.  Hillary's attack on the refreshing stance Obama has taken just solidifies my opinion that she represents the stale and outdated politics-as-usual which has engulfed our country.  Go Obama!
Go Obama stay on the "pace card" not the "race Card"
Just what America needs another JFK think alike and do alike.
WAYTOGO,OBAMA!!!! I for one an sick & tired of the same ole, same ole. Bill Clinton was the right man for the job in 1992, but his wife is'nt my choice. Barrack has my vote & i hope many more people vote for change. It's time for young & bold leadership, not this same cronyism we have witnessed in my lifetime(51 years). Hillary pumping up her number's to show people on an email list as supporter's, just shows me, she is the same Corporate leader as we have NOW. Obama is a grass roots thing, that hopefully will overcome the Corporate political machine That is Hillary. America has had enough bush, clinton. Move On. "DELUSIONAL THINKING BY COOMON SENSE AMERICAN'S IS OVER"
Mr. Mulligan's (J.P.), Obama represents the level of progressive thinking that is desired by many people of the liberal side of the spectrum.  Hilary is a safe bet, if there is one to be made, but Obama is just the kind of gamble that would propel us into 21st century America.  The kind of America where we grow past the need for conspiracy theorists because our actions speak louder than diplomacy and the need for diplomacy over the counter and under.  Whether or not it's a gamble the Americans will take will be made known at the next DNC convention.  But ultimately he's needed if not for president, for control of the DNC bullhorn and those that support it.
Yes, you have made me day Obama.  I have prayed for this day to come and here it is.  Thank God!!! Hillary needs to be stopped from pandering.  She never means anything that comes out of her mouth.  She speaks for herself and not to the people.  We need more of this.  They thought that Obama will just cower to one corner and start weeping in defeat.  No, he will fight back regardless of his desire to change the tone of politics.  He did not start this fight and will not abandon it without drawing any blood.  This will serve as a caution for the future.  She likes decking her opponents, but this time around, she will kiss the canvas first and be decked.  Warning!!!!!!!!! Dangers ahead, Beware Hillary!!!!!!
I agree with the last post. Obama is just media hype. The media is trying to influence the election just like they always have. Clinton is light years ahead of the kid. Yes, Kennedy was new and fresh, but he had been in politics for years; not a state legislator. And take a look at his record. we almost had a nuclear war under his leadership. I loved him; but he wasn't this perfect human some want to make him out to be. Go Hilary!!!!
I'm sorry Ba - Rock Star, your inexperience shined through on Monday night.  The fact that Senator Obama is now coming back and trying to explain his position indicates that in situations involving international decisions he isn't ready. That was the problem in 2000 when the President was elected.  I remember watching a debate between President Bush and then Vice-President Al Gore, and thinking that if Bush was elected foreign policy would be his most difficult task.  As we have seen Bush has never done well in this area.

I make this comparsion to say that Senator Obama's lack of international experience will continue us down the wreckless path of tbe last 6 1/2 years.  Senators Biden, Clinton, Dodd and Gov. Richardson are prepared to lead.

Senator Obama maybe you should consider the 2016 election.  I really think you would be ready then, until then keep reading the books on the Oprah book list.
Just when I had thrown in the towel on ever seeing a change in this country, OBAMA has shown that he can and will make a positive change for this country!  Can anyone say, A Breath of Fresh Air?
Hilary was right. I think Obama has a very bright future but his youth and inexperience is showing in the debates. 2016 would be more his time. And for the republicans in this thread, you can hang it up. After Bush, there won't be a republican in the White House for a very long time, thank God.
The complete question during the debate asked if the candidate would meet with those leaders in the 1ST YEAR of their presidency.  Hillary Clinton is absolutely correct in saying that she would not.  We have enough problems mounting due to the Bush Fiasco that should keep any president occupied at home and in reassuring our long-time allies that sanity has returned to Pennsylvania Ave.  As she clearly pointed out, she would be willing to engage with them at the proper time, under the appropriate circumstances.  To rush to meet with them in the 1st year gives them a position of prominence that could only hurt our interests.
Screw both of them.  Defeatists.
I agree with all the above responders who feel that Obama is too inexperienced...and yes, he does oversimplify the political world. I see no problem with the Clinton's being back in office - to me, Bill wasn't perfect, but compared with the current administation, his era seems like the golden days to me.

oh yeah, and when clinton lied, NOBODY DIED!

Go Hillary! I'll do whatever it takes to get you in office!
Go Barack! point out the difference between you and Clinton. It is time America see what Hillary is made of - another Bush incarnate.

Enough of Bush-Clinton's policy. We need a new direction.
