Oh-eight (R): Newt to endorse Fred?

Filed Under:

Iowa Christian Alliance president Steve Scheffler yesterday sent an email to the group's supporters reprimanding Giuliani and McCain for not participating in its events. The group held a candidate forum at the end of June that was attended by every GOP candidate except those two. And the group notes it’s hosting house parties throughout the state at various times in order to provide another venue for candidates to participate in their events.

More from the email: "While Rudy Giuliani admittedly is pro-choice and favors special rights for homosexuals he recently stated while in Iowa that he would only appoint strict-constructionist judges to the U.S. Supreme Court who are in the mold of Chief Justice John Roberts and Samuel Alito. However, most of Giuliani’s judicial appointments during his eight years as mayor of New York were hardly in the mold of Roberts and Alito… McCain has also left many Iowa Christian voters confused regarding his stances on various issues such as stem cell research, traditional marriage, and illegal immigration. While we are thankful for the pro-life votes he has cast in the past we cannot understand why he would support the use of federal tax dollars to advance the efforts of embryonic stem cell research."

BROWNBACK: The Kansas senator defended his push-call attacks in Iowa on Romney's -- and Romney's wife's -- stance on abortion. "If anything we're saying is untrue, I will issue an apology," the Des Moines Register notes.

MCCAIN: In another salt-in-the-wound development, McCain's camp was dealt another blow yesterday when two of his chief media consultants decided to resign. "Political ad-makers Russ Schriefer and Stuart Stevens, veterans of President Bush's 2000 and 2004 campaigns, on Monday emailed the new campaign manager -- lobbyist and longtime McCain adviser Rick Davis -- to say that they were quitting. The two men told friends they had considered leaving for days, as they hadn't been paid and the campaign's financial straits raised questions of when and how much they would be."

But let's not go overboard on this development. Many of the Bush-Cheney folks that were brought in by ex-manager Terry Nelson have been leaving. This may simply be a continuation of that exodus.

McCain brought his newly refined campaign to New Hampshire on Wednesday. "Yesterday, in a series of stops, McCain illustrated the new approach, speaking forcefully on issues dear to him and traveling with a slimmer crew of staffers - and a significantly smaller cadre of reporters and television cameras.  His message hasn't changed much, though he spoke little about immigration reform, an issue that figured prominently in previous visits and on which he differs from many Republican voters."

ROMNEY: In another attempt to appeal to conservative voters, Romney told a crowd in New Hampshire he wants to appoint conservative judges. “‘I will appoint justices like Roberts and Alito and Scalia . . . and Thomas,’ the New Hampshire Union-Leader reports.

F. THOMPSON: The Washington Post does an examination of Thompson's trial lawyer career (late '70s to early '90s). "His work representing white-collar criminals, drug defendants and lawsuit victims has given Thompson an affinity with one of the Republican Party's perennial targets, trial lawyers, and he carries that connection with him even today as he prepares to seek the GOP presidential nomination. It also helped shape a view on lawsuit reform that has frequently put him at odds with his own party."

Politico's Martin reports Newt Gingrich may end up endorsing Fred Thompson. Gingrich and his wife had dinner with the Thompsons early last week. Then there's the decision by one of Gingrich's longtime political aides, Rich Galen, to sign up with Thompson. "If a Gingrich endorsement of Thompson happens, it probably won't be until at least October. For one thing, Thompson isn't likely to formally announce his candidacy until after Labor Day. But Gingrich has also said repeatedly that he would hold off any decision until after he marks the 13th anniversary of the Contract With America -- the manifesto that spurred the GOP takeover of the House in 1994 -- by holding an online policy seminar in late September."

GOP analyst Quin Hillyer advises folks to take a deep breath regarding Thompson. The same folks, he notes, were criticizing Giuliani three months for not getting his campaign in gear soon enough and look where he still is. "Thompson isn't imploding. He has surrounded himself with smart people, and he is a very good communicator who is a proven mainstream conservative. He's gonna be very, very much in the mix, and he is well positioned to win the whole thing."

As I stated before, Fred T. ain't the second coming of Ronald Reagan. Reagan inspired hope in people that tomorrow would be better. Fred couldn't inspire a pack of hungry dogs to a piece of meat.
"NEWT TO ENDORSE FRED?" Good News liberals, the most right wing nut job and hypocrite is backing Fred Flintstone Thompson. Drag the women by their hair Stone Age stone brained gofers always flock together. Newt was getting in on the action at the same time he was hounding Bill for his after hour’s activities. The new republican norm is having one spouse, one future spouse in waiting and one on the side just in case. These Guys should never be consider conserative.
'hungry dog - piece of meat'? Would that be Hillery going after Obama.
Fred Thompson is not Ron Reagan, but I still get more inspiration from him or Rudy G. than I do from the whole of the democaratic party. Their entire elitist platform of tearing down the traditional American identity, socialist ideology of non-responsiblity for yourself, and big government to fix everything is a puppet show. Hillery is a bitter empty shell. Obama is now a newbie who owes million in favors and counting. And Edwards is just slimy. If the Dems brought out Biden or Dodd I would give them some credit, but my God there is no reason to place either Hillery of Obama on the highest seat in our nation. We definately don't need another 4 years of Clinton economics to drive us into another recession. Which is where Bill left us. I won't bother to mention WhiteWater...
Rudy's politics don't match the Rebublican party to a tee either, but at least we know he is a leader.
Fred Thompson may be the candidate that matches the majority of American values the best. Pro-Family, Pro-State rights, Pro-Gun rights.
I would like to hear more about Ron Paul, but he appearently is under a media blackout. Maybe he worries them.
As a last note, the Presidential elections have become so vile that I propose we change the election cycle to:
House - 4 years
Senate - 6 years
President - 8 years
Let's cut down the Bull....!

Be proud of our Nation is the best that God and man has created. Think Nationally, not golobally. America can not become the world, and the world can not become America.
The truth of the matter is that NOT every GOP candidate participated. Ron Paul was not even invited the the forum. Please get your story straight.
I think Newt might want to consider bringing Tom DeLay on board to add a touch of class to their operation.
I'm sorry but Romney is pandering so hard..he doesn't have an original stance on anything. He'll give the nomination up to Gulliani at this pace. It is now a Republican requirement to say you'll nominate judges like Scalia, Roberts, Alito...I guess Thomas gets no respect.
JIrby...don't forget Mark Foley, he has "the right stuff" to help Newt and DeLay...
Gosh, RH, everyone I know prospered while Clinton was in office.  I'm making more money now, but have much less to spend than in the 90's.  So if we could duplicate that economic success, I would be happy, no matter who the president happens to be.

I haven't decided who would make the best presidential candidate, but Ron Paul fits your description of "American values" much better than Rudy ever could.  Let's just hope we all make a good decision on election day.
If Ron Paul were president in 1941, we'd all be speaking German and under the 3rd Reich.

Food for thought.
RH--regarding your savior Rudy G:

a leader doesn't put a counter-terrorism center inside of a building that has already been bombed by terrorists.
"While Rudy Giuliani admittedly is pro-choice and favors special rights for homosexuals" man I bet the repub base is going to love that statment, so much for rudy getting the moral majority vote
RH, our country sucks right now because of your Bush boy, so why would anyone listen to a republican now? Hillary Clinton will be our next president and anybody would be better than who we have now. The PHONEY flag waving is over.
jerry... where are you?
According to a Capital News story I saw on friday, Newt thinks the current GOP candidates lack a "mission". He also said if Thompson was running he probably would not. Also McConnell says he doubts if the GOP can take over the Senate in'08.
Last time I checked, bb(cupsize?), President Bush isn't running next year, so nobody will be voting for him. Nice dodge trying to lump all Republicans into the same mold as the President, but they aren't. Just like all Democrats aren't the same as bad as Hillery. The flag waving isn't phoney, its just not the rainbow flag I assume you are waving. By the way why can't Obama be next? Or are you a racist as well as a socialist?
hey rh  ...Family values with that young lady he is with now I would trade my family for that ,now thats a value that fred just cant pass up,hippocritcal a bit dont you say ,gay issues at the law firm what family value is that from in the conservitive party, dont ansewr it would just hurt your head snapping back and forth with your principles between attacks on the democratic party and shout outs for men who turn thier wive in to get new ones
Slowly, slowly, you can see Hillary getting her claw like hands around the Democratic nomination.  The same claw hands that wrung Bills neck.  And, if you are reaaally, reaaaaalllyy, quiet, you can hear the main-stream Democrats crying out because they know she doesn't have a chance in 2008.  Can you hear it?  It's getting louder.  They are trying warn everyone, but they know, they know no one is listening, and it is way tooooo late to do anything about it.

And the GOP rejoices.
I know the dems are scared of Fred Thompson from their mean-spirited attacks. Fred left the Congress due to the corruption of both democrats and republicans.

I'm so sick of the politics in this nation. Politicians from both parties just tell the voters what they want to hear with no intention of following through.

Fred Thompson might be the fresh air we need. The country is still split right down the middle liberal verses conservative but the liberals act as though they have the mandate. Get real! Interest rates are increasing quickly and wait until the new minimum wage hits the economy. The democrats energy policy is to grow more corn and to exchange cars for horses.Meanwhile they fly around in private jets and burn more energy in their pricey homes. The Rebplicans do the same but they don't go around making movies about man's distruction of the earth. Gore has to be the biggest hypicrite on the earth. The democrates could not lead themselves out of a wet paper bag. Remember the first hundred days promise. Now all they do is issue supoenas that will have no results.

Go Fred Thompson and if the Republicans in Congress had any sense they would go back to the conservative values that made the Reagan years so great!

It should be crystal clear at this point in time who the ONLY true conservative in this race, and man of integrity, someone who is honest, has never flip-flopped, and has a consistent voting record to prove it. Someone who isn't afraid to go to Iowa, speak before RTL, or answer question on YouTube (Romney, I thought we could ask you anything?) As the Iowa Christian Alliance should now be painfully aware, the man they attempted to exclude from their forum got twice as good a reception (1,200 people) than the other candidates combined. The truth shall set you free, my friends.

RON PAUL, third place in fundraising, second if you consider Romney took $9M from his own funds.
Saying Dr Paul is a fraud is like saying Mother Theresa was not humble... LOL what a weak attempt.
Ron Paul is a true conservatives.  The others claim they support conservative values while eliciting the services of the "DC Madam".  Dr. Paul on the other hand has 5 kids (with one 1 wife), 17 grandchildren, and I believe a grandchild.  He never takes corporate money for his campaign and has spent decades advancing the ideas of government non-intervention in people's personal lives, and the power of freedom and the free market.
RH OREGON,

Ron Paul's presidential campaign website has short hand renditions of his positions on the issues.  Ron Paul's congressional website has many of his speeches in the House of Representatives verbatim.

Here's a summary:

1. He believes the US should have strong defense of America but get of Iraq, stop policing the world, and stop trying to force our values on other nations (I think of this as a Star Trek Prime Directive foreign policy).  To assist strong defense, he believes in enforcing our immigration laws;

2. He believes in SMALL government, much smaller than any other candidate.  He is called "Dr. No" by other members of Congress because he consistently votes "No" on all new programs, special-interest spending, and taxes.  The Taxpayer's Union rates him higher than any other member of Congress.

3. I think he is the only Republican to vote against the Patriot Act.  He opposes government domestic spying, holding prisoners for years without trial, and other Bush Administration violations the Constitution; and

4. He is personally pro-life, but he believes that social issues, such abortion, gay marriage, etc. are not the business of the Federal government.  Instead, the 10th Amendment reserves such things to the States.

I agree with him on many, but not all, of these issues, but I am strongly supporting him anyway.  He is what Diogenes sought in vain: an honest man.
I doubt I would consider voting for any other republican besides Ron Paul because the others are pro-war.
My vote will be going to the man who cares more about "We the People..." than to all the others who care more about their political careers.  That man is of course Ron Paul.
"If Ron Paul were president in 1941, we'd all be speaking German and under the 3rd Reich."

Actually we wouldn't because in WWII the congress voted to declare the war and transitioned the US into a war time economy with the intention of winning the war as quickly as possible.   This isn't something Ron Paul would actually object to, or at least it would be something he would be able to veto (since the vote back then was almost unanimous after Pearl Harbor was bombed).

Congress hasn't bothered to declare a war since then and that is one of Ron Paul's major protests against our current foreign policy.

He proposed an actual declaration of war against Iraq and the congress wouldn't do it.   Why do you think that is?
"If Ron Paul were president in 1941, we'd all be speaking German and under the 3rd Reich." "Food for thought."

It is these sort of statements that really lower the level of the debate and exhibit intentional ignorance on the part of the poster. Disagree with Dr. Paul on one or more issues? Fine, I know I do too, but please stick to the substance of those issues.

I will be supporting Dr. Paul because for the first time since Reagan, I see someone I know who will do the right thing no matter how easy it would be to do something less.

Process of elimination also is on the side of Dr. Paul.  Liberal-in-drag Rudy? Flip floppy Romney? Over-compromiser "friend of Ted K" McCain?  How about one of the evolution deniers like Brownback or Hucksterbee? (Seriously, do they even understand the scientific method? I got that in eight grade.) What about those VIOLENTLY (literally) opposed to illegal immigration like Tancredo and Hunter?  Everyone of these have their faults.
Who is Ron Paul?

The real conservative.

I'll vote Cthulhu before I vote for Rudy. Between Rudy and Hillary, who cares?
"If Ron Paul were president in 1941, we'd all be speaking German and under the 3rd Reich." "Food for thought."

Congress declared war against Germany the day after they declared war on us. This is the exact Constitutional process Dr. Paul articulates in his message. He sumitted a bill to congress for them to do their Constitutional duty and declare war on Iraq. Instead, just like they did in Korea and Viet Nam they passed a "resolution" transferring their Constitutional responsibility (against their oath of office) to the President and the UN. Wake up man, and quit spouting slander. Read the Constitution and open up your little brain to whats going on around you.
