Oh-eight (R): No GOP YouTube debate?

Posted: Friday, July 27, 2007 9:05 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

The New York Daily News says it looks like there’s but a “snowman’s chance” of a CNN/YouTube Republican debate. Giuliani said “scheduling issues” would likely keep him away; McCain called questions from a snowman “frankly inappropriate”; and Romney said “the presidency ought to be held at a higher level than having to answer questions from a snowman.” The New York Post says Giuliani’s camp is concerned about the proximity of the Sept. 17th date to the close of the third quarter -- Sept. 30th.

GIULIANI: The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder also notes that Giuliani might skip the YouTube debate.

While in Texas yesterday, Giuliani said the red state could be competitive in a general election, notes NBC’s Shawna Thomas. “Texas will be a battleground,” he said, insisting that Republicans couldn’t take the state for granted.

MCCAIN:

McCain's stop yesterday in New Hampshire focused on immigration, but it was not his choosing.

Also, speaking to reporters in Boston yesterday, McCain talked about Monday’s CNN/YouTube debate, NBC’s Andrew Merten reports. “I only saw some excerpts. I just don’t think that questions from snowmen are appropriate in presidential campaigns,” McCain said, referring to a YouTube video in which a snowman asked the candidates about their views on global warming. “But I think that this is serious: We’re in a war,” he concluded.

He also answered questions about the shaky state of his campaign -- but only for a few minutes.  After repeating several times that he’s not nervous and has seen an “enthusiastic turnout” while campaigning in New Hampshire, he refused to answer any more “process” questions about fundraising or organization, and insisted that the group of reporters go back to asking questions about the issues.

ROMNEY: Tom Edsall, now writing for the Huffington Post, has an interesting examination of Romney's FEC reports. He combs through payments to certain folks that Edsall believes is an indication Romney's trying to buy grassroots support.

Per the AP, “Romney said Thursday he'll probably deliver a speech explaining the role his Mormon faith plays in his political life, but he argued he's made strong gains among evangelicals despite questions about his religion. ‘I have thought about that,’ Romney said in an interview with The Associated Press. ‘I haven't made a final decision, but it's probably more likely than not.’”

F. THOMPSON:

Without telling its readers, the Washington Post seems to be making this its unofficial Thompson biography week. Today, John Solomon examines the commentaries Thompson writes online and delivers on the radio and notes the sharp turn to the right he's taken over the last year.

Thompson was on Hannity last night, but wasn't asked about the chaotic staff day.

At least my guys know better then have a bunch of freaks asking stupid questions.  let's get to the meat of the issue and stop choking on the bone.  Hopefully when it goes to one on one, there will be serious questions instead of las Vegas style shows the democrats put on.  That youtube thing was cute, but it has no place in American politics.  Makes us look like we have truly lost our minds.  How can Hillary or Obama be president and the rest of the world take us seriously when you are asked questions by a snowball????
Frankly, the Presidency ought to be held in a higher regard, than to have either Gigolo Rudy 'G' or that great white Squirrel hunter "B'wana Romney" running for it.
Oh you have got to be kidding me! The republican cowards will refuse to take questions from the public, even if CNN filters them!!! And these bozos want to be president of the Unites States. I once heard: "You can't make tough decisions if you can't take tough questions." That tells you everything you need to know about how unworthy the republicans are from ever regaining the White House. Goodbye and good riddance.
Actually, they just realized that most of their base don't believe in the existence of "Internets".
Whew! I was afraid The Republicans participating in a You Tube Debate would humanize them and begin to repair the damage done to the Republican brand by the incompetent/corrupt Bush Cheney administration. But, nope, no worries, they are going to stick to their losing strategy, pretending to be better than the people they want to represent.
I can imagine Hillary going to talk to that nutjob in Iran and during their talk, he sends out a snowman to ask her a question LOL.  Amy, no worries on my side either.  That went to show what a bunch of total wackjobs the far left has become.  I cannot believe to the loony left would want Hillary Clinton to be their president after her Iraq vote.
I think the G.O.P candidates are taking their cue from Bush. He only speaks to military audiences. They (except for Tancredo), were not at the NAACP conference, thay will not be at the Urban League Conference and now no You-tube.Playing a game of hide and seek. Maybe they are afraid.
Texas as a blue state????  LOL, considering the local gains in the last election, kind of hard to imagine that.  We have a trial lawyer who is after John Cornyn, but he is about as loony as they come.
Of COURSE a youTube debate has a Tony Snowjob's chance in hell of happening.  The Repubs don't feel comfortable with questions that arent' canned, pre-examined and easy to answer.  Can you imagine BUSH in a youTube debate?@?
“the presidency ought to be held at a higher level than having to answer questions from a snow man or american citizens in general" I believe this is what romney meant to say, he will not be bothered with questions from commoners, how dare they!
man the repub's have a real line up of class candidates
Seems like the Republicans have taken on an elitist attitude lately. Shunning the 'common folk' or a few humorous individuals and instead catering to the well off and powerful within the social conservative base. No wonder the Democrats are out raising them b/c the Republicans limit their own opportunities.
A bunch of freaks, Jerry?  These "freaks" are not political pundits or professional journalists.  They are mainstream America.  More importantly, they are voters.
I read that only McCain and Ron Paul had agreed to the debates.  Paul, probably because he is not afraid of any question, and McCain because he is getting desperate.
Snowmen vote.
"At least my guys know better then have a bunch of freaks asking stupid questions."

Jerry they’re called Americans. And it's about time these elitist a****** talk to the American people instead of the lobbyists in Washington.
A man with three flags in glass boxes behind him, his grandfather, his father, and his eldest son (a casualty of the Iraq War) is a "freak", asking a "stupid" question?  It is that kind of disdain for the American public that has President Bush possibly the most disliked and unpopular President in our history...and goes a long way to explaining why most of the Bush clones, who want his job will not face the electorate.  Fortunately, it will also be why none of these men win the White House in November 2008.
Wow, Jerry, a bit cynical are we?
Yew-Toob?  Wha's tha-yet??  Does Gaw-awwd know about this here 'Yew-Toob?  We lahk the old ways.  Don't keep tryin' to bring us inta this here 'global' deal thingie!  Jerry sounds lahk mah kind er guy- y'all lissen t'im, heah?.
Typical repub attitude - too elite to answer to real Americans beneath their corporate cronies.
Spineless, pantywaist republicans. Scardy cat cowards. Maybe someone will ask a question they'll have to answer truthfully. Oh my God no! They're all a bunch of sissies.
Coy Reese, didn't you know we military parents are not supposed to voice our questions or opinions?  We're worse than freaks to the far right.  We're unpatriotic demons probably destined to inhabit our own special circle in Dante's Inferno.
Typical GOPer rhetoric. Snowjob the masses with gut issues; Shivo, stem cell, abortion. Many red states are lowest on school ranking.
Deliver rewards to the uber-wealthy; pay FICA on low percent of income, recieve large tax breaks on income, luxury vehicles, multiple properties.

Our 21st century communication and education  has allowed more of working class to see through the GOPer BS.
Looking at the big picture, what did the YouTube debate actually produce for the Dems? How did this debate classify the character of the candidates?  And how can any of the debate questions be considered "hard questions?"

1) The debate spurred a skirmish between Obama and Clinton, which has resulted in regurgitated political words.  Candidates simply refined their ability to answer questions without answering questions - all in the name of pleasing their audience.  There was no clear winner and no shining moment(s).

2) The debate would be old news by now had it not been for the next day scramble to attack, defend, or define the single particular question.  The only true colors that were revealed came out of the political arguement between Obama and HRC.  The Clinton campaign team showed that they are willing to go to whatever measures are necessary in order to secure a vote, while Obama stood strong through the waves of Clinton's attacks.  HRC picked a fight over nonsense and Obama has driven it down her throat.

3) Although the questions come from everyday people (with the exceptions of the snowman and gun nutjob), they are single minded and overlook how that particular issue fits into the giant puzzle of issues riddling Washington.  Not to undermind those who submitted questions, but even if you could ask the most profound "hard question" that would ACTUALLY bring about substancial change, do you really think 60 seconds of response time would produce that profound change?

I'm pretty sure that HRC and Edwards were caught on an open mic recently describing how they wanted a debate among a smaller group to avoid the 60 second substance lacking answers.

Republicans should refrain from lowering themselves to this level.  It is merely a show to put on for viewers.  I don't want to see what kind of a front a politician can put on, I want to hear a solution that is POSSIBLE.  If the only thing this would produce is the ability to pick a political fight with another candidate, I say leave it to the Dems.  Even with America seeking change, they are unable to pull themselves together for the good of the country and would rather pick eachother apart.  Only one of them will move on to the next round and the weaknesses that their arguements exposed will surely be used against them in later rounds.
Whatsa matter, are the Republican candidates afraid to answer questions not submitted in advance by their protective pundit class or carefully prescreened questions from a carefully prescreened audience?  These are the guys that will supposedly tear the eventual Democratic nominee to shreds in the general election.  If they won't get out of the playpen to mix with the kids in the schoolyard they don't stand a chance.  You only need to know 2 things about the eventual GOP cadidate.  The base won't tolerate any change in how the insane "Global War on Terror" is manged.  The base won't tolerate any deviation from our steady march toward an authoritarian police state with zero accountability to the unwashed electorate.  The GOP ticket will be a Bush/Cheney continuation because the primary voters support what they're doing.  The public is finally starting to wake up and discover they've been deceived by the entire Republican party.  That ought to finish them off in the '08 election.
At least I know my candidate has such a clean record he isn't afraid to be asked anything. Go Ron go! Rudy and Mitt are frauds...McCain is out of the running, and Fred is so boring more of the same.
PS - My redstate is #3 on school ranking, due to 80 years of Republican rule...
Which one of your guys is your guy. sooner or later the republicans will have to pick one wife cheaterover another as opposed to the wife who was cheated on and then worked it out and stayed married .What do the republicans think of the defense of marriage act, with thier GUYS marring multiple times what can marriage do to defend itself. So pick a GUY who made a vow and took an oath in front of god and then broke it  if thats who you want may the good people who have stayed with one woman one man theory should vote for HILLIARY,YOU GO  GUYS try and pick one jerry
When I watched the YouTube debate I tried to picture the republicans answering questions in that kind of a setting, where the questions were not fed to the candidates ahead of time.Knew in my heart the republicans would never go for it.They prefer a Gannon(gay non reporter)Hannity or they run to be on Rushs show. The same way the Bush regime answers to nobody but their cronies is the way these guys are running their campaigns. They make their disqualifications easier and easier to recognize. Is this why all these campaign people are leaving in droves?Who wants to work for a loser?
JK I have not heard a single answer from the GOP candidates that wasn't in a prepared speach, or wasn't a patented answer. Anything outside of that was within the company of pundits...delivering the same lines Bush has repeated over the years. Even their debates have been various degress of Bush policy repeated. The Hillary, Obama debate actually served me well b/c I got to see the difference btw them further...a real debate of divergent ideas. On the GOP side there seems to be a p*ssing match over who is and isn't a conservative, a christian, or abortion. They can't get outside of their box for one second. And I dare say that niether party has been unified (unless it's self preservation) for the good of the country for quite awhile.
In these parts, calling someone Republican is fightin' words.

It implies a person who doesn;t think the rules and norms apply to them.  Someone who has not experienced much outside their sheltered little world, someone who requires a crutch, a scapegoat - the church - to attempt justifying and blaming their sad shortcomings and failings on.

A person who drives in the passing lane is a republican.  A person who parks in the fire lane in front of the grocery store is a republican.  The list is endless.
NH - "Republican Rule"? Do we already have a totalitarian theocracy? I thought in a Democracy a government is elected by the people to serve the people... how naive of me...
It is fun having jerry as a foil. I believe the "freak" "whackjob" questioner with the automatic weapon was one of his friends.

W -- sign of the American Chickenhawk. Pawk, pawk, pawk!
jerry - still waiting....  Even on the (R) section, you cannot resist the negative (and intellectually-crude) comments toward Dems.  Still no positive comments on Repubs, I guess.  And, by the way, your response yesterday further proved my point.  Maybe next week, huh, jerry?
Woow...this is "incroyable!"!!! they are truly losers. We are talking about the common man here!!!
Maybe FOX can arrange a format for them, where they would all know in advance what they would be asked. But they'd still need their hidden wireless receivers to be reminded how they are supposed to answer.
Democratic landslide in '08
Jerry/Maybe some of the questions that were sent in would be considered odd(some were even funny), but they would not be put on for the debate. The questions that were presented were honest questions from Americans(you remember who they are, don't you?). Some of these questions could have come from someone who has not made up there mind as to who they are going to vote for, or even if they are going to go with a Democratic or Republican candidate, so calling them all "Freaks" is in very poor taste, even for you.
CJ I think we are on common ground here.  I never said I've heard substance from GOP's.  My point is that the YouTube debate is not the place to find it, and it has served only as opportunity to further divide a party.  What would motivate the GOP's to jump through the same loops and ring the same bells the Dem's did - just to put on a show for an audience?  I pay people for that kind of entertainment, not elect them.

I agree that both parties have some serious issues to overcome before America can be United again.  The left is nuts, the right is nuts, and the rest fall in the corrupt profit turning middle.

Politicians are liars that spin and twist everything until the root problem is cleverly hidden.  Our prospect of CHANGE is like a liar telling you that they never lie.
Greg- don't tell me- let me guess: the person in the passing lane is driving a minivan with a 'Jesus fish' on the back door with a Bush/Cheney bumpersticker stuck right below it (OR the alternative 'Abortion Stops A Beating Heart' sticker right below it).
And around here, Idaho plates.  They even use a hand signal that looks like the capital letter I sticking up from their hand.
Buzz - don't tell me, let me guess.  You're mom drives you around.

Getting a little big for that car seat aren't you?
Slightly off the subject. but not much; I hear face-shooter is going to have his pacemaker tinkered with tomorrow.  Now the chimp will REALLY know what it's like to be a heartbeat away from the presidency!
I don't  now that anything enlightening came out of the YouTube debate. However, anyway to get youger people and Americans in general to feel more connected to what's going on politically in our country is great. Those of us that sit on our computer and write these little comments are obviously committed, but maybe the YouTube debates will reach some people that aren't. I'm not sure what is so scary about taking a questions from a snowman, but the GOP doesn't seem to want to answer the questions that the American people are asking. So what else is new?
And Jerry I've seen you on enough of these boards to know that YOU know that most of us on "the looney left" DON'T want HRC as president.
Yeah, I'm sure the guy with the "baby" he was holding is just the kind of voter the democrats need.  LOL!
I think this is a good move for the republican candidates. They must know that the 3 republican voters left out there don't have internet access, much less know what a YouTube is. Maybe they should have a old timey telegraph debate. That seems a little more their speed. Or maybe a good old fashioned "9/11, 9/11, 9/11, Osama, "They Hate Our Freedoms", Constitution Who?, hatin' on the gays and minorities" debate. I mean, c'mon there's more important issues out there like fear mongering, "supportin' our military contractors" and driving our country back to 1930's Nazi Germany.
I love listening to all of left leaners whining about Republican candidates not debating on YouTube and CNN. This is typical of left leaners who possess very selective, if not short memories out of either convenience, or lack of mental capacity.  You are complaining about Republicans not appearing on YOUR forum when Democratic left wingers whimped out of doing debates on Fox News.  When are all of you left leaners going to figure out that you can't have it both ways?  When are you going to become intelligent enough to know that you can't live off of negative garbage and attacks all of the time.  Get a real life and suck it up.  I keep pointing out to all of my Democrat friends that if there is another attack on American soil exceeding 9/11 the Democrat Party will collapse into oblivion and obscurity.  You will not possess a shred of credibility with an overwhelming majority of Americans.  I hope liberals aka: left leaners, keep spewing all of the hate and venom because it is the biggest voter turnoff in the world.  Most reasonable and intelligent Americans want candidates who have "real" plans and ideas as to how to fix our nation's problems.
Ron Paul is so dominant on YouTube that Giuliani and Romney are scared of the home court advantage Ron Paul would have. In short, they are cowards. Glad to see McCain has some courage.

Of the Republican candidates, Ron Paul is 1st in YouTube, Meetup, MySpace, Technorati, Alexa, Google, etc. The old media is just too slow to realize what is happening.

Ron Paul places 1st or 2nd in every straw poll, debate, and active participation survey.

Dr. Ron Paul has the most contributions from U.S. military personnel & veterans above all other candidates. So support the troops and vote Ron Paul!

We are making history – Vote Ron Paul!

Ron Paul gets a walkover.
