Impeach Gonzales?

Posted: Monday, July 30, 2007 3:49 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
A group of House Democrats will introduce a resolution calling on the Judiciary Committee to begin impeachment proceedings against Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) will sponsor the measure. It will be dropped in the hopper tomorrow.

It's too early to say whether it will actually get anywhere.

Here's the text of resolution...

RESOLUTION
Directing the Committee on the Judiciary to investigate whether Alberto R. Gonzales, Attorney General of the United States, should be impeached for high crimes and
misdemeanors.
1 Resolved, That the Committee on the Judiciary shall
2 investigate fully whether sufficient grounds exist for the
3 House of Representatives to impeach Alberto R. Gonzales,
4 Attorney General of the United States, for high crimes
5 and misdemeanors.

This guy symbolizes everything that's wrong with this administration. Let him stay. How much better will his replacement be under Bush?
No wonder President Bush has higher ratings then this do nothing congress.
Gonzales is the highest law official we have in this country, and he's inept. Why doesn't President Bush see that? Possibly because he wants the Democrats to look bad.

Politics as usual. I hope the Democrats don't let this go. This guy should be impeached. It would be an eye opener for future administrations. President Bush hates this Congress and it shows.
Make it a 3-for-1 and add in Bush and Cheney.
they really need to lie down before they hurt themselves.

I think they should all put on their Che Guevara t-shirts and march on the white house. We don't have any proof, but we just FFFEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeelllllll
They cant impeach an AG. Bush is the only one that can fire him. All they are doing is making Bush dig in more against them.
This is a good start! He has obstructed justice and perjured himself many times. Congress has given him a chance to rethink his testimony, but he is sticking to his story. He should resign to save his boss any further embarassment.
They can impeach any public official.  D.D.Duh Dave
Gonzo isn't going anywhere..he's Bush's firewall and keeps the Dems from further proceeding onto Rove and Cheney themselves b/c at nearly all high levels the administration has wallowed in mud. It's all tactical for both sides.
It's about time! I hope the Republicans see this as necessity and stop their mind boggling obstructionist tactics.
Maybe we can get another "monica" to do to Gonzales what Gonzales has done to our Judicial system.  Republicans do not care about the "rule of law" unless there happens to be a stain on a blue dress involved.
Stop LIbEraling about me Greg. I didn't say that.
Jerry - the only ratings higher for shrub is when he is next to the repugnants in congress, look it up, the democrats rating is higher than the republicans - their number is what is making the overall rating for congress bad.  Yep, the majority of the people in this country think shrub is bad and the repugnant members of congress are worse.  Now that is a campaign fact I can live with.
Look, this guy is a liar, incompetent or both. Send him on his way, to defend him is pure folly and blind partisanship. the American people deserve more.
I want my country back, impeach AG first then Cheney and Bush
Inthe MIddleofTexas said, They cant impeach an AG. Bush is the only one that can fire him. All they are doing is making Bush dig in more against them.

"Article II of the Constitution grants Congress the power to impeach “the president, the vice president and all civil officers of the United States.”"

But...but Rush said they can't impeach him.........

For all you people who continue to call for impeachment proceedings, here are the rules.  Take the time to read them so that you will understand that in this case, it will never go anywhere and just tie up valuable time by our congressional leaders.

Impeachment
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the constitutions of several countries, impeachment is the first of two stages in a specific process for a legislative body to remove a government official without that official's agreement. The second stage is called conviction.
Impeachment is so rare that the term is often misunderstood. A typical misconception is to confuse it with involuntary removal from office; in fact, it is only the legal statement of charges, paralleling an indictment in criminal law. An official who is impeached faces a second legislative vote (whether by the same body or another), which determines conviction, or failure to convict, on the charges embodied by the impeachment. Most constitutions require a supermajority to convict.
In the United States, impeachment can occur both at the federal and state level. At the federal level, different standards apply when the impeachment involves a member of the executive branch or of the judiciary (and dispute currently exists over the use of impeachment against members of the legislative branch). For the executive branch, only those who have allegedly committed "treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors" may be impeached. Although treason and bribery are obvious, the Constitution is silent on what constitutes a "high crime or misdemeanor." Several commentators have suggested that Congress alone may decide for itself what constitutes an impeachable offense. In 1970, then-Representative Gerald R. Ford defined the criteria as he saw it: "An impeachable offense is whatever a majority of the House of Representatives considers it to be at a given moment in history." Four years later, Ford would assume the Presidency, following the resignation of President Richard Nixon. (Nixon resigned following a committee vote to approve impeachment proceedings, but before actual impeachment by the full House.)
The Constitution grants to the House the power to impeach "The President, the Vice President, and all civil Officers of the United States." Jefferson's Manual, which is integral to the House rules, states that impeachment is set in motion by: charges made on the floor; charges preferred by a memorial; a Member's resolution referred to a committee; a message from the President; charges transmitted from the legislature of a State or territory or from a grand jury; or from facts developed and reported by an investigating committee of the House. It further states that a proposition to impeach is a question of high privilege in the House and at once supersedes business otherwise in order under the rules governing the order of business.
The impeachment procedure is in two steps. The House of Representatives must first pass "articles of impeachment" by a simple majority. (All fifty state legislatures as well as the District of Columbia city council may also pass articles of impeachment against their own executives.) The articles of impeachment constitute the formal allegations. Upon their passage, the defendant has been "impeached."
Next, the Senate tries the accused. In the case of the impeachment of a President, the Chief Justice of the United States presides over the proceedings. Otherwise, the Vice President, in his capacity as President of the Senate, or the President pro tempore of the Senate presides. This may include the impeachment of the Vice President, although legal theories suggest that allowing a person to be the judge in the case where she or he was the defendant wouldn't be permitted. If the Vice President did not preside over an impeachment (of someone other than the President), the duties would fall to the President Pro Tempore.
In order to convict the accused, a two-thirds majority of the senators present is required. Conviction automatically removes the defendant from office. Following conviction, the Senate may vote to further punish the individual by barring them from holding future federal office (either elected or appointed). Despite a conviction by the Senate, the defendant remains liable to criminal prosecution. It is possible to impeach someone even after the accused has vacated their office in order to disqualify the person from future office or from certain emoluments of their prior office (such as a pension). If a two-thirds majority of the senators present does not vote "Guilty" on one or more of the charges, the defendant is acquitted and no punishment is imposed.
Congress regards impeachment as a power to be used only in extreme cases; the House has initiated impeachment proceedings only 62 times since 1789 (most recently President Clinton)
Two presidents:
o Andrew Johnson was impeached in 1868 after violating the then-newly created Tenure of Office Act. President Johnson was acquitted of all charges by a single vote in the Senate.
o Bill Clinton was impeached on December 19, 1998 by the House of Representatives on grounds of perjury to a grand jury (by a 228–206 vote) and obstruction of justice (by a 221–212 vote). Two other articles of impeachment failed—a second count of perjury in the Jones case (by a 205–229 vote), and one accusing President Clinton of abuse of power (by a 148–285 vote). He was acquitted by the Senate.
I love the guy who thinks Congress has a lower approval rating than Bush. He cracks me up. Bush is in the high 20's and Congress in the high 30's depending on which poll you use. But hey don't let the truth or facts get in the way of your attacks. Golly, that Bush is just such a popular figure. Why? because I say it so, that's why. If we keep saying it to other people maybe it will really come true. Keep believing, day dream believer.
On the ratings of Congress: you have to look at the figures. When you ask people "Do you support the Democrats in Congress," the numbers are more like 37% in favor. It's an old tactic, you know. Filibuster and delay, and then blame the inability of a bare Democratic majority to get above the 60-vote filibuster line on the Democrats, not the filibustering Republicans. The largest decrease in Congress's numbers come from antiwar people who are disappointed that the Democrats couldn't end the war.
Problem is they start impeachment against GonzoBonzo there and it will take the heat of the Texas idiot - who is the one that REALLY needs to be impeached.
Impeaching Gonzales will enable the Dems to expose massive illegal GOP activities beginning with voter caging attempts to disenfranchise thousands of legal voters based on race.
I don't really understand how anyone can actually think Gonzalez *shouldn't* be impeached.

At best, he is so fundamentally and completely incompetent that he can't even run his own department.

But the fact that every time he doesn't know something it just happens to get him off the hook, sure looks like playing dumb, to me.

It's like an old episode of the Simpsons. The Police Chief is questioning Mafia character Fat Tony.

Chief Wiggum : Theres a Hijacking of a truck planned on route 101. You wouldnt happen to know about it. Would you?

Fat Tony : Whats a truck?
Congress always has low approval ratings. Even when Clinton left office with like 67% approval rating, Congress had a much lower rating.
Nixon resigned before he got as low as Bush is now. But hey,Jerry, keep bashing Congress
So let me get this straight...exercising oversight over a lying, law-breaking Attorney General is the sign of a "do-nothing" Congress...but trying to impeach the President over an extra-marital affair was worth Congress' time and money.

Republican hypocrisy is truly astonishing!

hey, InTheMiddle, Texas...one problem with gonzalez is he ignores the constitution.  you seem to not KNOW the constitution.  it doesn't take long to read...check it out.

     Article II, Section 4

The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.
I'm afraid it's obvious what's going to happen here. Gonzo is holding out until the Congress goes into recess. Then he'll step down and Bush will make a recess appointment (which doesn't require Senate approval). This allows the white house to avoid the two things they fear most, an impartial independent AG and his appointment dependant on him setting up an independent investigation into the Justice dept. A recess appointee stays in office until the current cogress expires, which (surprise surprise) is the same time Bush leaves office.
Does anyone else think that Gonzo has something on Bush?   The guy has been his personal attorney for years.  It just seems strange that they are taking such a tough stance on someone they could just throw under the bus and make it go away.
All misses. Gonzo is the firewall to the real crimes. Let Sibel Edmonds speak and get Gonzo out of the way, and you will see a march on the White House - of Federal Marshals. But don't worry, 28%'ers, your War President isn't going anywhere until he hightails it for Paraguay in 2009.
I love that the right-wing nut jobs are trying to convince people that no one can impeach the attorney general because only the president can.  WRONG!  The Constitution provides that the AG be approved by consent of Congress and any officer that is approved through this process may also be impeached by the Congress!  We do not, as of yet, live in a dictatorship where one man controls who is and who is not part of our government.  Au contraire!  What, "IntheMiddle," Constitution have you been reading? Or have you ever bothered.
Nothing will be done period. The dems are just as bad as the repugs.
Once again Jerry you have your facts wrong.  W's ratings are lower than Congress'.  You cannot blame this on anybody but the AG.
hey duhduhduhdave.  they don't "have any proof" because scumbag and his shills have done everything to keep documents secret, they've lied under oath and they've refused to show up when they are subpoenaed.  your blindness is staggering.
It is time for the Republican Party to pressure President Bush to replace Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. This man has clearly been disingenuous with the country. It completely baffles me that our President is still hanging on to him.

Share your opinions and thoughts. Does the congress any have special powers to force him out? Let us know if Gonzales is an honest man? http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=227

Make your voice heard.
Certainly, impeaching Fredo is the right thing to do.  Anybody that has seen any of his testimony to Congress knows that he is lying, deceiving and twisting facts beyond reality. Unfortunately, I expect that the House will continue to fail the American people.

EIGHTY (80) US towns and cities now have resolutions calling for the impeachment of the DickNBush criminals. Pelosi provides the lame excuse that the Dems are focusing on ending the senseless neocon wars and can't handle impeachment as well - in other words, Congressional Democrats can't walk and chew gum at the same time. Impeachment proceeding must begin in the House. House Resolution 333 already defines the articles of impeachment for Cheney - the necessary first step. Somebody with a backbone needs to proceed on that. Once the House does its Constitutionally mandated job, Sen Feingold and other patriots will carry the ball in the Senate.  Let the Repugs in Congress defend the indefensible high crimes and misdemeanors of DickNBush and their staff - the American people need to know exactly who these co-conspirators and accomplices are before the 2008 election.  CONGRESS/PELOSI: STOP STALLING AND DO YOUR JOB!
I cannot express how proud I am that this resolution is being introduced by my Congressman, Jay Inslee.
IT'S WAY PAST TIME, BUT LET'S GET IT DONE NOW !
Birds of the same feather flock together.  If Gonzo were smart and an independent thinker, he won't be working for the idiot.  He fits the perfect mold for Bush, you have to be an obedient dog, wags you tail on command and have no opinion to belong to the exclusive club of neocons who have lied to us to start the war and is continuously lying to us to keep the war machine going.
The only reason Al is still here is that it is his job to keep a lid on the justice dept doing there job and investigating the administration.

If Al was gone a plethora of needed investigations would be initiated and ol George would be in even more trouble than he already is.
THROW HIM IN JAIL.
Good!  Impeach his sleazy ass.  Maybe THEN we can a. find out what they're hiding and b. open the impeachment floodgates so that the rest of the Bu$h crime family can be FORCIBLY REMOVED.
Let us pray this flies!
siri@legitgov.org
Gonzales is only the first official of this administration who should be impeached! Cheney should be impeached. Bush should be impeached. Rice should be impeached. They are an absolute embarrassment to this country and the rest of the world. They've done immeasurable long-term damage to our reputation and neglected the hunt for the most important criminal of our generation: Osama bin Laden!
How can you find evidence against him when they are blocking all the investigations.  Thousands of Emails lost (hmmm). Miers not showing up for her testimony, claiming executive priviledge on things that the everyone has said the president had nothing to do with..Hmm..

The reason the congress' ratings are so low is because they haven't gotten us out of this war, and Bush hasn't been impeached yet.
This is garbage that they wouldn't impeach him.  He needs to be gone and the further away the better.  Bush will never get rid of him because he has pandered for Bush for way too long even in Texas.  (The whole Texas mafia should be done away with.)  That includes not just Gonzales, but Hughes, Rove, Bush and the whole bunch of his cronies.  Top on down.  This man thinks he works for Bush, not the people.
I watched his testimony last week and it further increased my confidence in him. Alberto is so dam articulate!
Re: "Yiannis from Baltimore": This is just the kind of "innocent blood will be spilled" cynicism that got us into this mess in the first place.
It's ok to impeach Gonzales and tie him up with a trial in the Senate but the real prize is Cheney.  He must be impeached before he gets us involved in a war with Iran and before we lose our constitutional form of government without putting up some sort of historical protest.  Cheney is Dr. Evil, Gonzales is simply an enabler and a fall guy for Bush.
No pain, no gain.  Go for it Dems.
Whatever happened to the Law and Order mantra that used to come from the Republicans. Don't hear that too much any more. Maybe a little sensitive on the subject?
you have sworn testimony from others within the DOJ whose statements on the stand are in direct conflict with gonzo.  He (or his atty) claims the differences can be "nuanced" away, but 1) we haven't heard the explanation, and 2) didn't the repugs in the 2004 presidential campaign scoff at "nuanced" answers?  road goes both ways and both sides need to re-learn this.
