The Washington Post: "Agents from the FBI and the Internal Revenue Service raided the Alaska home of Sen. Ted Stevens (R) yesterday as part of a broad federal investigation of political corruption in the state that has also swept up his son and one of his closest financial backers, officials said. Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator in history, is under scrutiny from the Justice Department for his ties to an Alaska energy services company, Veco, whose chief executive pleaded guilty in early May to a bribery scheme involving state lawmakers… Stevens said in a statement that his attorneys were advised of the impending search yesterday morning. He said he would not comment on details of the inquiry to avoid ‘any appearance that I have attempted to influence its outcome.’”

The New York Times adds that the investigation centers on Stevens’ relationship to a businessman who oversaw a remodeling project that almost doubled the size of the senator’s house… The decision to raid the home suggests that the corruption investigation focused on Mr. Stevens … has taken on new urgency.”

"Neighbors said agents showed up between 11 a.m. and noon, and a commercial locksmith was called to open the front door. The agents were still there at 8:30 p.m… Throughout the afternoon Monday, agents could be seen coming and going from the house, on a dirt street below the Alyeska Ski Resort. Curtains were drawn much of the day, so it was impossible to know what was happening inside. Outside, agents could be seen taking extensive still and video images of the house and surrounding property.”

"Another one bites the Dust, Hey, Hey" Queen
How much would you bet that--unlike that of Louisiana Rep. William Jefferson who'd been caught with 90 grand in his freezer--Sen. Steven's office won't be searched by the FBI?
It's nice Stevens was tipped off in advance...it gave him enough time to stash the evidence elsewhere. If he weren't a Repug, would he have known about the 'raid' in advance??? Inquiring minds want to know:-)
Ted better put in a big earmark for a bridge to his new prison cell.
The Party of law, order and values.
If this is a picture of his "double sized" house and he is the longest-serving senator, it tells me he doesn't know much about the corrupt Washingtom graft machine or he's a very slow learner.
the bridge may well have a destination, after all ,JAIL to the traitors who steal the peoples money and ruin our good name .FOR THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE,WE THE PEOPLE HAVE HAD IT.
If we have learned one thing Olivia, when checking out refrigerators in Louisiana, always check the freezers out as well.
"North To Alaska"-Johnny Horton
Johnny Edwards is looking at Steven's house and going, "Is that where the help stays?".

Steven's is really in the wrong line of business if this is the best he can steal.  He should have been a trial lawyer.
It is about freaking time! The crook of the north is dead. Stick the pork king in a barrel and add ice!
I, for one, don't believe for one minute that Senator Stevens was involved in this "bribery scandal."  He simply isn't smart enough...  If he were to do something stupid like accept bribes, he would get caug...  Oh, wait, nevermind.

I, for one, strongly believe that that Senator Stevens was up to his elbows in this bribery scandal.  Because he is such a moron, I must believe, however, that this is his first attempt given that he's never been caught before.

I think I'll send an e-mail to him via one of my internet tubes.  I hope the tube on his end isn't too full of crap for my message to get through.
John Reese....You would then say Stevens is ah......
LIKE A VIRGIN....his very first time?
Like an unfertilizied insect?
I m sure the tears are flowing "Forgive me I have sinned"how much is that going to cost me ,i still get into heaven dont I? GOD?GOD its me ted can you help me out.
I don't think Stevens was directly involved.  I think his crooked son, the repub president of the state senate did all the planning.  They had the bills go to the oil company, so they could figure out how much cash to give to Stevens so he could pay the contractor.  It must have looked fool-proof on paper.  But, gee, the company couldn't trust Stevens to tell them the correct amount of the bribe so they had to look at the bills first.  Can't trust a crook....

All the pundants have been saying, for the last year, that Stevens was a shoo-in for reelection next year, being so popular in repub Alaska.  I think this may just about put the nail in his coffin.  Watch for "retirement" in exchange for a drop in the investigation.  Then watch for crazy Gravel to announce his bid for senate.  Hopefully Alaska can find a middle ground and actually elect someone who isn't a crook (i.e. a republican) and also sane (a democrat not named Gravel).
Of course, in Alaska during the winter, you don't have to keep your money in the freezer--just hide it somewhere outside.
Ted's just an old dinosaur of the old Republican culture of corruption.  This is just a mop-up effort against the worst elements of the last Congress.  He's corrupt, so what---he's a Republican!
If they knew in advance about the "raid" why couldn't someone have been there to open the door?
