'08 candidate scores on the issues

Posted: Tuesday, July 31, 2007 1:31 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray and Chuck Todd
A new Gallup survey shows how Americans view the top Democratic and Republican presidential candidates on some key issues (the economy, Iraq, terrorism, and health care). Interestingly, McCain and Giuliani tie for the top score on Iraq, while Obama leads on the economy and Clinton leads on health care.

Maybe Clinton doesn't have to release a comprehensive health-care plan after all... Of course, these scores are somewhat impacted by name identification (a sizable number responded with "no opinion" for Romney and Fred Thompson).

Below are the results:

A great deal/fair amount of confidence to do the right thing when it comes to the economy:
Obama 62%
Clinton 61%
Giuliani 60%
McCain 53%
Edwards 51%
Romney 40%
Thompson 39%

The war in Iraq:
McCain 55%
Giuliani 55%
Obama 54%
Clinton 51%
Edwards 50%
Thompson 39%
Romney 37%

Terrorism:
Giuliani 69%
McCain 66%
Clinton 55%
Obama 53%
Edwards 48%
Thompson 42%
Romney 38%

Health Care:
Clinton 65%
Obama 61%
Edwards 54%
Giuliani 52%
McCain 45%
Romney 36%
Thompson 35%

So this shows that when the war ends and you end up with Clinton and Obama. So its Clinton/Obama-unbeatable.
GONZO-GATE IT JUST WILL NOT GO AWAY.HI ALL !
How can you have more than one person with a percentage over 60%?
TEC, respondents were asked if they had confidence in these people on the issues (either a great deal, fair amount, only a little, almost none, and no opinion). Each candidate was scored invidually, so it's easy to have scores in the 60s. The scores you see are a combined amount for great deal/fair amount...
er, are these likely voters or just people who happened to be home during the day watching QVC?
Amy -- just adults, not likely voters.
'08 scores on gonzo-gate. gonzo 0% usa 99.9999999%
For all the talk about clinton and her EXPERIENCE, gosh I wonder who makes these polls.
Clinton's experience:

How can you even give her above 40% after watching this and how can you not go with Obama after watching this.

Come and join  the new change. Goodbye to old ridicule and old school. Time to move on. The world ha changed and we have to keep pace.
What the hell is the "right thing'?  This is one of the most inane, ambiguous, useless surveys I have ever witnessed.  The questions are fluff.  Nothing scientific about this at all.  Conjecture run rampant.  Move on.
Interesting that Rudy and McCain top this survey among Republican candidates...but the polls show something else. Romney and Thompson are off the bottom of the charts on every question.
Ok Ok, so its Obama/Clinton. Just as long as its a democrat, life will improve considerably.
This country is so stupid it deserves a trip back down memory lane and the Carter economy. Not to mention his piss poor foreign policies.
gonzo-gate
For those who have no opinion on Giuliani and Thompson, I would be glad to let you have mine. They are a couple of corporate flunkeis. Glad to be of help.
The American people have MORE CONFIDENCE IN OBAMA !!
To run the economy and to lead us out of Iraq !!

Obama beats Hillary in BOTH CATEGORIES !!

So, the WINNING TICKET IN '08:

OBAMA/EDWARDS '08

Hillary can be the Sec. of Health and Human Services

OBAMA/EDWARDS '08
People you can trust !!

Spare the stupid Clinton-Obama ticket. The old school knows thats he has any chance of winning only with Obama's charism and dynamic profile. The Right wing knows that they can galvanize all anti0hillary sentiment and no wonder they are all rooting for her now. So funny. They cant take down Obama. The adage, enemy of an enemy makes a friend. Isn't that a surprise that Romney, Newt are all now wanting HRC. What a joke.

I rather have Obama-Richardson with Biden as Sec of state.
Of course she doesn't.  MSM has done a good job of covering up the fact that she doesn't have one.  Obama was hounded from the day he got in as to where his plan was and almost six months later hardly a word has been said about the lack of a plan.

Since she has so much experience one would have thought producing a plan would have been a no brainer.  She could of whipped it up and at the same time baked a batch of cookies for Chelesa.

Maybe she will spend more time on a plan and less now shooting off her big mouth on the radio.  Better yet give her a mike "PLEASE"
clinton nominated = giuliani elected
obama nominated = giuliani elected
edwards nominated = edwards elected
don't throw your vote away, the media knows clinton nor obama can win the general election, which is precisely why they want them nominated, clinton is no different than the repub candidates anyway, look at who big business despises the most, that would be the best candidate for you and the population at large, don't let the wealthy elite fool you
I'm assuming these are mostly uninformed impressions of a general population.

That said, I'm a little surprised that Obama has a favorable impression enough to get this result; I figured he would still be too unknown.  His campaign would probably be pleased they have this recognition.

And look at McCain.  While many watching the campaigns see his campaign as comatose, the general public seem to hold him up in the top 2 Republicicans.

Can't wait to see how these default impressions move when the fireworks start.
Take a look see...hillaryclinton.com
Hillary's house of cards is starting to fall apart.

If she's the front runner, why do people have more confidence in Obama on leading us out of the War in Iraq ?

If Hillary's the media appointed 'front runner', why do people have more confidence in Obama to run America's economy ?

Sorry, Clintonistas, sometimes being a self-serviing political opportunist just isn't enough !!

Maybe she can get a job as a lobbyist for the NRA

Obama/Edwards '08

Ummm- Where do ANY of them score on ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION and border security?  Oops - guess they just FORGOT to ask AGAIN?  WHY is this issue not one of the questions asked so America can see how EACH of them stands.  We know Hillary and Obama have been at La Raza rallies - meaning "The Race" and it ain't black or Caucasian, folks.  If whites or blacks did what that group does we would be jailed for racism.  But then, La Raza gets by with screaming the loudest that we who want lawbreaking illegal aliens to go home are racist.  Where do each of Democratic candidates stand on this issue.  It wasn't even broached on the debate last week.  WHY?  America WANTS and NEEDS to know where they stand.  Is the Hispanic vote they are pandering for more important to them than enforcing the laws of our land that have been in place before any of them could begin to think of being president.  What nation do these candidates REALLY represent - America or like George Bush - Mexico first and America somewhere only when it is time to collect the tax dollars to support the illegal alien subsidy to big business. Ask the Dems to give us their positions in a way all Americans will know what they are voting for if they cast a vote for either of them. This issue is important enough that grass roots stopped the amnesty from passing the last time it came up.  It should be OBVIOUS to pollsters that it is important to AMERICAN voters!!!
The thought that anyone wants Edwards as VP in 08 makes me laugh.  He did nothign for Kerry and he woudl do nothing for either Obama or Hillary.
Sierra, the Clinton house of cards cannot easily be knocked down. The repubs tried it on Bill and he refused defeat. I will vote for any democrat for president whether it be Obama, Edwards or Clinton. Repubs are TERRIFIED of Hillary. I believe she is the best candidate so far. Obama or Edwards would be strong presidents as well.
No More Bush, or Bush clones. No more Clintons.
Sierra...love your style.  All of this posturing right now is in direct proportion to our W fatigue factor.  The more W goes down in the polls, the faster we want his replacement in office.  I would rather be in Senator Obama's shoes right now than just about anyone else; including HRC.  I just wish the primaries would kick off already.  Let's put all of this to the real test.
I am still trying to understand why Giuliani's performance after 9/11 qualifies him to be an expert on terrorism? Somebody, anybody, please explain this to me?

This is an interesting series of poll results. I'm not sure what can be read into it as it seems to portray the Republicans as stronger on the war and terrorism issues than the other polls of public sentiment that seriously lean towards a pull-out to begin ASAP and we all know the Republican candidates are not necessarily in favor of that action.

As for who will win the Dem primaries and the nomination, the lean towards the reformist attitude by Obama and Edwards is definitely appealing to many Dems. However, I would not count out the political machinations of the Clinton campaign. I am also not convinced of an Obama-Edwards ticket being a winning one as a mandate-setting decision. If you flip it around, it could be more of a mandate to action as Edwards is more atuned to the national political scene than is Obama (although Obama is an incredibly quick study). Either way, we'd have an incredible White House with a very intelligent leader, akin to Clinton and Carter in that regard. (Talk about total and complete opposites... wow!)

Clinton would also be one of the most intelligent leaders we've ever had in the White House. I have some reservations on her thoughts as to the war, terrorism and other issues of that ilk, as she could very well be "Bush-lite", which may be stretching it but she doesn't appear warm and friendly enough to remove herself from that moniker. She also needs to take more of a liberal stand on the war and terrorism.

The end results if any one of these 3 people get into the White House, as far as the war and terrorism go, may be close to the same. Be open and willing and objective then support and vote for the candidate that fits your ideals and thoughts the best.
Repubs started that message about Clinton being a repub clone. Not even remotely close-in politics, ideas, issues, religious beliefs. Clinton is the only person who can crush the republicans.CRUSH!!
"Clinton is the only person who can crush the republicans.CRUSH!!"

Good enthusiasm, but Republicans are Americans too!

Actually though if you want a candidate to crush the Republicans I think Obama is the right candidate.  Hillary gives republicans something clear to fight against.

And in a general election she isn't as likely to disrupt the republican base as Obama.  Obama has some conservative appeal; his perceived religiousness is one mentioned here on first read.  He has used, and will almost surely use in a general election, language evoking the reduction of executive power, and the separation of church and state.

Obama has the potential to appeal to some of the Republican base in ways Hillary can't.  The weakness of the Republican candidates and the catastrophic Bush administration really gives the Democratic party an opportunity to cripple the GOP for years and years to come.

In 2016, today's 18-35 year olds are going to be 27-44 year olds, and so on.

I believe that if Obama is the Democratic nominee, the Republican base will shrink and fragment significantly, possibly irreparably, so long as the GOP does not have a platform and a face for the party that can lift them up.
Susan - Clinton's negatives are at 48 and have been for years. She can't win the general election.
As usual the media guys only concentrate on the top tier candidates (by virtue of the money they've raised).  Any thoughtful person knows that Joe Biden has the best plan for Iraq and others are coming around to his view of a federated Iraq.  I read that even the President has been considering it.  But, naturally, if one of his opponents does adopt Joe's plan they'll take the credit for it.
