Huckabee camp to Brownback: 'Stop whining'

THE FIGHT FOR AMES
From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro

The Huckabee campaign is hitting back at Brownback, telling him to “stop whining,” start showing some “Christian character” and questions whether or not he’s “tough enough to be President.” Yesterday, Brownback’s campaign complained that Huckabee did not explicitly apologize for what they called an “anti-Catholic” e-mail sent out by a Huckabee supporter. What the Huckabee campaign had said was they were “glad” the supporter “issued an apology” and his comments “were not authorized by, disseminated by, approved by, or condoned by the campaign.”

Now, the Huckabee people are taking off the reins, saying Brownback’s “silly” call for an apology "is nonsense," and they wonder why after Huckabee’s statement yesterday, Brownback “continued to cry about it.”

“As a lifelong Catholic, I was taught that when a person apologized, we were to forgive him and go forward," Huckabee Campaign Manager Chip Saltsman writes, "not shop for other apologies from people not even involved in the original sin.”

Here’s the full Huckabee statement:
"It's time for Sam Brownback to stop whining and start showing some of the Christian character he seems to always find lacking in others. He has attacked Governor Huckabee for something that a Huckabee supporter said in an email sent to two individuals. The person who originated the email has apologized and is not a member of the Huckabee staff.

"For Brownback to claim that the Governor 'owes him an apology' is nonsense and indicates that if Brownback is going to fall to pieces every time a supporter of the Governor says something he doesn't like, he clearly isn't tough enough to be President. The Governor strongly disavowed the statement by the supporter, but that wasn't enough for Brownback. He continued to cry about it. The irony is that unlike Senator Brownback, I have been a Catholic my entire life, as have several of the senior staff members in the Huckabee campaign. Governor Huckabee enjoys strong support from Catholics and for good cause. If Senator Brownback wants to start apologizing for inappropriate things said, perhaps he could pull the 'beam out of his own eye before taking the speck out of someone else's' by apologizing for the website 'Baptists for Brownback' that states that Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Fred Thompson and others are 'Hell bound.'

"We don't condone or support attacks on people for their faith--whether it comes from our supporters or from his. Senator Brownback surely has better things to do than police the private emails of a single supporter who said things for which he later apologized and which should have been sufficient for most Christians to accept. As a lifelong Catholic, I was taught that when a person apologized, we were to forgive him and go forward, not shop for other apologies from people not even involved in the original sin. It's time for these silly accusations to stop and for all of us to focus on leading the country and solving problems that the American people care about."

**** UPDATE **** The Brownback campaign released a statement this afternoon in response, calling Saltsman's statement "hysterical" and said they had contacted the Huckabee campaign privately to stop what they called an "anti-Catholic whisper campaign." But after two days, Brownback Iowa Communications Director John Rankin said the Huckabee campaign did not respond.

And the Brownback camp maintains that Huckabee's apologetic original response "lacked a clear denunciation" of the e-mail.

"We are saddened that the Huckabee campaign has criticized Senator Brownback for calling out an anti-Catholic whisper campaign for what it was," Rankin writes.

The Brownback campaign called the Baptists for Brownback Web site "a spoof site with no ties to the Brownback campaign."

Rankin added that "In the final week before the Ames straw poll, Senator Brownback wants to focus on the issues that Iowa Republicans care about" -- listing the war in Iraq, abortion, gay marriage and appointing "strict contructionist judges." But he didn't miss a chance to follow with another attack -- on Huckabee's tax record.

Go Huckabee.
I wouldn't call that news.
Saltsman is right - Rude WAS rude. He was wrong. But if Brownback can't deal with an insult from someone who supports a different candidate, how in the heck is he going to stand up to Al-Queda? This is nothing more than Brownback's (failing) attempt to latch onto a little of Huckabee's momentum - Huckabee won a county straw poll in Iowa the other day, coming in with 22% of the vote in what is, obviously, a packed field. The Brownback camp is shameless in their bid to seize a little of that spotlight.
Both are a non story
If a tree falls in the woods, and nobody is there to hear it, does it still make a sound? If Brokeback or Huckleberry say something, and nobody cares, is it still important? Thoughts to ponder.
both of them should apoligize to the american people for pretending to be presidential candidates
Pretty impressive response.. Sounds like Huckabee is a lot tougher than I thought he was.  Too bad he didnt believe in evalution; I refuse to vote for someone who believes that 99% of the population is misguided.
I'm not a fan of these 2 guys but I will say Browback is annoying and seems to be a 12 year old girl (at least mentally)
Shameful behavior...Huck and BrownBack..goodbye Someone call Tommy Thompson.
As a moderate Republican (or at least less conservative than most), I have to ask: who the hell are these guys, again?
Huckabee's campaign had nothing to do with the e-mail sent by Rev.Rude so why should they apologize. Is every candidate now responsible for what a supporter might say? If thats the case then every candidate in this Presidential election needs to apologize..daily.
Someone needs to tell Brownback that America doesn't need a crybaby for President
Huckabee must be gaining more momentum than is being reported, if Brownback and the Club for Growth are attacking him.  Right on!
These guys makre Ron Paul And Gavel look like winners.
AL, KS- I thought the saying was 'if a man in the woods makes a comment, and there's not a woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?"
(jus' kidding, ladies....)
I'm just learning about Mike Huckabee. I like what I read and see.
First Romney's "I'm such a swell Dad and Hubby" radio spot and now this backbiting between the two of the Republican right-wing candidates. How many times do we have to witness all this Republican religious and evangelical crap before we finally agree that spirituality has absolutely no place in politics, especially when it is used to attempt to gain an advantage over the other competitors. Are all Democrats hell-bound? Is Huckabee's God better than Brownback's God? Has Bush's God been on vacation for the last 6 years? For once, can we have a campaign involved in issues facing our coutry, and free of this moralistic posturing?
Pete:
Huckabee never said his God was better, if you knew Mike  Huckabee you would know that he isn't that kind of person. Huckabee embraces everyone, he has even reached out to Michael Moore asking him if the two of them can get together and talk about health care. Huckabee doesn't care about someones party connections or their religion, he just cares about people. This is the type of man we need for President, one that can work with everyone to get the job done.
Huckabee is a uniter!!
If your A Kansan and you don't support brownback than
you really should move.
Since Karl and George brought religion into AAll elections we can expect to hear more and more of who has the bestest GOD.That is how they have won elections along with voter fraud.I have family and fiends that are eagerly awaiting armaggedon that George Bush swore he would bring to them.
Huckabee doesn't seem all that bad (as far as the Republican field goes); altho, he doesn't stand much of a chance. Samantha Brownback? What a LOSER. Would somebody PLEASE explain to him that he doesn't have a prayer to win the nomination?!!!
If Jesus popped down to earth in time for the 2008 election, he'd vote for Ron Paul or the Democrat (unless it was Hillary).

He would tell her "get behind thee, Satan!"
Bailey, thats not very Christian now is it.
Just bein' honest, G.
"If your A Kansan and you don't support brownback than you really should move."

Wow, that's rich. Straight from the Right-Winger's Handbook on debating. Hey, might wanna give your brain a well-deserved vacation - seems like it worked real hard on that one.
Lesson to be learned -- keep religion out of politics
