A raucous caucus

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
You may have heard more than the usual amount of screaming and shouting last night from the House floor, as outraged Republicans staged a walk out after accusing Democrats of robbing them of a legislative victory.

At around 11:00 pm ET, the House was taking a very close vote on a GOP measure that would essentially bar any Agriculture Department monies from being spent to the benefit of illegal immigrants. The Democrat in the speaker's chair, Rep. Mike McNulty, gaveled the vote closed in favor of Democrats when the tally board in the chamber indicated that Republicans had won by one vote -- in which case the Ag spending bill would have been killed until after recess.

Republicans went absolutely bananas, hollering at the top of their lungs and chanting "SHAME!" Of course, the House itself controls the cameras and where they are pointed in the chamber, so all we see it a static shot of the dais. But still, all things considered it was a very raucous caucus. Very few of us have been noticing, but this week has been an especially contentious one and tempers were short to begin with.

So the whole thing has spilled over into today. Republicans claim hypocrisy on the part of Democrats, who had promised not to pull the same kind of procedural hijinks that Republicans themselves pulled during the 12 years they ran the place. As we write, the House is "blue screen" -- in recess -- while the Democratic and Republican leadership meets privately to try and find a way to play nice and get out of here by tonight, so they can start their recess.

Is Action Jackson offering to take anyone outside?
Everybody's an actor, huh?
The democrats were sure pretty guilty looking on CSPAN this morning.  I thought Stenny Hoyer was going to cry trying to tell the GOP he was sorry for last night.  The Democrats promised a lot of things to get elected, but just like Bill Clinton is 1992, they seem to have gone in the other direction.
I'm listening to c-span #1 right now. Make Marsha Blackburn Republican party leader in the house. I love it when she says "left" or "Liberal" with that accent.
So I suppose when the House approves impeachment articles against Gonzo, they will walk out too?  Nice waste of space Mr. Murray.  What are you trying to prove?  Have you been drinking the Rove koolaid again?
Jerry...for the last time, what does Bill Clinton have to do with the current sad state of GOP congressman?  Get over it.
Heated conversation heard between Pelosi and John Boehner regarding the vote in question:

Pelosi: You're it.
Boehner: You're it.
Pelosi: You're it, quitsies!
Boehner: Anti-quitsies, you're it, quitsies, no anti-quitsies, no startsies!
Pelosi: You can't do that!
Boehner: Can too!
Pelosi: Cannot, stamp it!
Boehner: Can too, double stamp it, no erasies!
Pelosi: Cannot, triple stamp, no erasies, Touch blue make it true.
Boehner: No, you can't do that... you can't triple stamp a double stamp, you can't triple stamp a double stamp! Nancy!
Pelosi: [hands over ears] LA LA LA LA LA LA!
Boehner: NANCY! NANCY! NANCY!
Congress is perfect when inaction. Seems our fore fathers knew we need a do nothing congress. Gridlock is good when you need to stall useless legislation.
Kenn: "Of course we will rub your face in it":O)
Good post Kenn, really enjoy your last volley!
What a bunch of loosers.  Do the politicians know what their job is? Who elected them?
Republicans act like children. The petulance is astounding. They are just fit to be tied because the bill increases taxes on foreign held business! They don't give a HOOT about anything else. Their supporters are gonna be peeved, that's all they care about. This " this is money for illegal immigrant welfare" is a strawman. They are all crooks and liars.
"......screaming and shouting last night from the House floor, as outraged Republicans staged a walk out after accusing...."  No political theater here! Move along, now. Keep moving, keep moving, no political theater to see here...
Wow !!
It sounds like a REAL TRAGEDY !!
Are the Republicans being frozen out ???
That's sooooo unfair !!
Remember how fair Cong. Boner and the Republicans were when they were in charge ??

Now, they can't even demagogue the Agricultural bill !!
Probably a majority of our crops are pick by illegal aliens....

Get a life, Johnny Boner !!
Is there any link to what is actually in this bill?

Listening to both *sides*, one would think they are discussing two completely different pieces of legislation...

Any help with the real language?
Amen Sierra!!!!!!!!!

I understand the latest Webster's dictionary has a picture of Boner under its listing for loser.
jerry, I guess your party never did anything huh?  How one forgets.  Clinton is a done deal get on with life.  The current investigations are only the tip of the iceberg for what the repuk party has failed to do, keep the dunce in chief in check.
Jerry----I am going to agree with you on something, its never happened before and probably will never happen again!  LOL
Here goes:  "they seem to have gone in the other direction"
I agree. What you put out you are going to get back.
The Democrats have just as bad an  attitude as the Republicans they just haven't been the ones in power that has screwed everything up for the last 12 years--but they will.  Neither of these parties gives a "tinkers damn" about you and me Jerry.  They are concerned about holding on to their own power and all the benefits that comes with that.  When your party is more important than your country then we are all screwed.  We either need to make it easier to have a multi-party system or abolish parties all together and let it be a free-for -all.
How can anyone really support actions like this from one side or the other. We need these jerks to do their job and if the Republicans had the votes to move the bill in their directions then that should have been what happened. If not, then not. How hypocritical you sound defending these actions.
The Democrats are willing to steal votes in order to insure that illegal aliens continue to receive American tax money, and liberals in general support their actions. WOW!!!
So, if I understand this correctly the Republicans are upset because the Democrats gaveled a vote closed on a poisin pill amendment that was solely designed to kill the Ag bill when they were ahead.  First off, I'm not sure that the Republicans should be upset that one of the more important spending bills wasn't skuttled.  Aren't midwestern farmers a big GOP voting block?

But my question to the First Read team is this: Did they gavel the vote closed before the alotted time had expired?  If they did, that is poor form.  However, if the GOP has their panties in a knot because they weren't able to muster the votes necessary to pass the ammendment in the alotted time that's not anyone's concern but the House GOP leadership.  Mike, Chuck, or Mark: can you please let us know if that gavel fell early?
Clinton isn't a done deal. He's running again in 08. Besides that's the last time you people were in charge, and just like Nixon it's fair game. Unless of course you have the Liberal Rule book.
Wait.  Hang on.  I read that wrong.  If the vote was in favor of the measure by one vote how can the ruling be that the motion didn't pass?
Here’s what happened: The House (Republicans and some Democrats) voted against Medicaid to ILLEGAL aliens. The Demo leadership didn’t like that vote so after it was closed they re-opened it, found some “profiles in lack of courage” to change their vote and poof! passed the measure.  Apparently, this is a new low which is usually found in those republics which were famous for exporting bananas.
Just like the election, the Dems just can't accept defeat.  They will do anything - even count incorrectly - to win.  Wonder how much we'll hear about this incorrect vote on the news.
Gonzo-Gate ?
Hey, the Dems are in charge, they can do anything they want.

And next year, they can run on their accomplishments for all their goals which include 1) A minimum wage increase 2) Reams of paper documenting endless and pointless investigations.

Oh, and providing funding for Iraq, whenever President Bush tells them to do it.

Sit Nancy, sit.  Roll over.  Play dead!  Gooood Nancy.
To House Minority Bonehead, ain't payback a bitch.
America wishes to extend its graditude for all the cooperation between the two parties. They have acccompished so much.  What a bunch of nothings we have elected. One side lies and the other can't tell the truth.
Voting or sitting out elections has consequences.  I'd blame all this on those Republicans that sat out the last election in order to "punish" their Republican lawmakers.  Good job.  Thanks for the loons we have now.
Definition of the Bush Administration: Infrastructure failure.
And all this because of one, "Macaca". Ouch!
The Dems will rue this. If the RNC has any sense, all recess long they will be running ads touting how the dems cheated to give benefits to the illegals.
Tell the CRIMINALS THEY CAN GO F THEMSELVES!
PASS NO BILLS FOR THEIR SPY CRAP! THEY BROKE THE LAW AND NOW ARE TRYING TO COVER THEIR ASSES!!
Shut the bums down..no money, no bill for their illegal spy progams. No money for Iraq, we need bridges and roads here in America.
Tell the crooks the house has pulled the purse strings SHUT.
THE FAILED BUSH/CHENEY terror years are almost over.
These lying, terrorist are our home grown scum!
AWW poor republicans! They made fun of dems for years for being too nice and passive. Now we are fighting back and they don't like that either. AWWW what a shame, shame, shame. I'd cry but can't because I'm laughing too hard.
repubs bithch that the dems are in control well thank your architect karl rove or the head of your majoritiy I forget his name not livingston he left because of an affair it was hassert he left for protecting a would be child molester or foley or santorumon shiavo I mean thank Bush and co.for purposely mishandling the war .if all the democrats do is sit back the republicans will finish destroying themselves
Anyone who thinks the next President R or D will be anything but the same politics is deluding themselves.
Not sure what the hell they stand for but I'm about to go join the Libertarian Party.

hey dave az, payback ain't but hillery is.
For all you republicans that sit your butt at home the last election to punish the party, well this is what you get. The reason they won the last election was because they got more voters out. I bet you will vote next time.
Will the last person to leave Washington, please turn the lights out.
Plant a cherry tree and help the goverment.
I've heard the circumstances and the explanation from the Democrat who was running the vote.  He seems sincere and I accept his explanation. I also dont' blame Republicans for being irate at this incident of incomptence. Counting votes is a sensitive issue after all.

But why is it that three times now in recent history (Florida in 2000, Washington state in 2004 and now right on the floors of congress)there are issues with Democrat competence in conducting voting where they are in charge?

They ran the voting in the controversial Florida Democrat counties in 2000.  Those were their voting machines and their chads. They designed the butterfly ballot.

They also "found" lost votes in King County in the 2004 governor's race in the state of Washington after two recounts went against them.  Certainly losing those votes was the result of incompetence and ended up costing the people a considerable amount of money and stress.

Now they prematurely gavel a vote on the floors of congress.  But it's probably honest incompetence because it's Democrat incompetence.
That whole Congress if full of it..I tried to tell you idiots that it would not be any better with Democrats in charge. They are all PROFESSIONAL politicians.
So they want to keep Congress in session till they pass THE bill?  Well do not blink Dems...give 'em a veto bill and move on.  Shrub is in his VETO years. Have a go old shrub, this is about your illegal wiretaps, you are in the eye of the storm.
Shrub your lemmings will be angry if they can not go on vacation again!
Hi folks.

I should clarify: There was a great deal of confusion in the well of the House as members from both sides were changing their votes as time was expiring. McNulty brought down the gavel when the count he had was 214-214, even though the tally board in the chamber still read 215-213, according to eyewitnesses. A tie means that the motion fails.
Hey, HP! No intel, no trying to kill terrorists and a lot more bridges will come down. And it won't be because of "infrastructure failure". It'll be because of "democratic backbone failure".
Quoteth Darth Cheney, "go f@#k yourself," repubs.
