Huckabee plays up outsider role

From NBC’s Andrew Merten
Huckabee was also interviewed by NBC’s Matt Lauer on MSNBC, and touted himself as a “Washington Outsider,” striking a tone somewhat similar to Obama’s and Edwards.’

VIDEO: Mike Huckabee tells MSNBC he hopes to convince voters he is the outside-the-Beltway candidate who can change the way Washington works.

“One thing I do see is a separation between where I stand and where these other candidates stand,” Huckabee said. “Most of them are from Washington; people are beginning to be real clear -- they don’t want another Washington person because Washington has failed. They haven’t delivered real answers for the problems that Americans face.”

When asked about his plans for competing in the Ames Straw Poll this Saturday, Huckabee referenced his Arkansas hometown, saying, “We’re going to be there with Hope watermelons. If nothing else brings them our way -- 150-pound watermelon should do it.”

He also talked about not wanting to go negative on other opponents, using a basketball analogy to do so. The former Arkansas governor said in basketball, there are two strategies: play dirty, using elbows to “cripple” your opponents or be able to shoot well.

Huckabee said he’d like to think he can be the guy “who can hit the 3-pointers.”

Obama, whose basketball interest has been well documented, has also used basketball analogies on the trail, saying he’s “skinny, but tough” and that he has “sharp elbows.”

Put about three bottles of Vodka in that 150# watermelon and you'll have a lot of people out there, whether they vote or not LOL.
So he admits the repubs have failed America but who does he think he is fooling by saying he will change things, not me.
"Huckabee".....wasn't he a famous pantomime artist in the 1970's?
Hee Haw!!!!!Huckabee is going to bring watermelons from Hope Arkansas and everything going to be just peachy.Gee don't we feel better now. Gomer Pyle as president....Yeah we need that like a hold in the head....NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.BYE BYE!!!!
I really wonder if being "outside Washington" is really all that important. How many presidents over the last 50 Years was a washington insider? Bush the first and Nixon are the only ones that come to mind. So it seems the odds are are only slightly stacked against Washington insiders.
he wants to "change the way Washington works." Would that be for the better or would he just dig the hole deeper? What direction is that change arrow pointing? You can't fix a mistake until you admit there was a mistake. I don't hear him running down the list of the Bush administration failures.
I've heard him in Columbia, South Carolina at a FairTax training and he appears to be the real deal.  He's an underdog and I might just support him.  He's very charismatic and practical in his ideals.
Huckabee should be exactly what the religious republican right backs - but since they are not all as sincere as they pretend to be they won't.  Actually, for the most of them it is the money, they just use the religion as a smoke screen.  Not backing Huckabee confirms it as he does live and preach his religion and is not living in adultry like most of the top tier republicans.
Hey huck George "W" Bush was an outsider are you saying that is what we need.
The only kind of people who will vote for Huckabee for a belly full of watermelon would be the kind who voted for Bush the past two times.
Change the way Washington works? Well, at least he has a sense of humor! That or he's dangerously naive. Or he thinks we are. My money is on the third choice. Nope. Still no candidate out there on either side that inspires me to vote for them except for TOM TANCREDO...TOM TANCREDO...TOM TANCREDO. Unfortunately his campaign is going nowhere fast which will probably leave me once again trying to decide which is the lesser of two evils, or casting my vote for a third party candidate who has no chance to win. *SIGH* We all doomed.
Juan- i dont think huckabee is as "hick" as you think. He seemed to connect with various demographic groups, for example, he recieved 48% of the african american vote. His outreach to especially minorities during Katrina was very noble. He encouraged people that ran Christian camp sites and other facilities to open their doors to refugees from New Orleans.
Look up your facts before stereotyping people.

The name Clinton sounded weird till we got used to it. I think the name of a person has nothing to do with how well they will perform.
Justin- I could care less about his name. Anyone who questions Darwin's theory of evolution should NEVER BE PRESIDENT. We have already had enough damage from the right wing religious fanatics to last us a century. I was just having alittle fun and was not stereotyping him. It is called separation of church and state.....You know it is in the constitution that Huckabee is trying to subvert it.
Juan, your comments only show your complete ignorance about Gov. Huckabee and this campaign. Have you ever even listened to anything he has said? First of all, regarding evolution, Gov. Huckabee made it clear he thinks evolution should be taught in schools whether he personally believes in it or not. But most importantly, he said that neither he nor any other candidate or the President should have a direct say in what is taught in 8th grade science class.

Secondly, you assume Gov. Huckabee is a religious fanatic because he is a Christian and a former pastor. But I think if you would, I don't know, listen to him, you would actually find him to be a truly compassionate conservative. But, I guess anyone who professes any faith is a religious fanatic and that's about where you stop listening.

Lastly you seem to think that the First Amendment says something about a President not having a personal faith. Ummm, actually the First Amendment guarantees that a President can have whatever faith he wants. The First Amendment says, "CONGRESS shall MAKE NO LAW respecting an establishment of religion or PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE thereof." That means that Gov. Huckabee can believe, speak about, and preach any religion he wants from any location he wants. But so can you. So can I. So can anyone else. And we can all do so without "subverting" the First Amendment because it doesn't address that issue.

Being a candidate from outside Washington does not assure success, and being a candidate from within Washington (serving in House or Senate) does not assure failure. Whoever the Republicans choose, I hope it is someone committed to tax reform, entitlement reform (reducing entitlment spending), and strengthening America's manufacturing base. We voters should demand specificity on issues from whoever is chosen as the Democrat and Republican candidates for president.
Darren, MB, SC -- good to see you back; where have you been. I see you are still with Tancredo. I suppose he is as good as any of the other Republicans (except Rudy, McCain and Mitt). Really we are not doomed unless Bush stays in office. Will you join me at the End the War and Impeach Bush rally in DC on the Sept. 15th? I have a feeling not.
HUCK IS THE ONLY REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE WHO CAN BEAT HILLARY.IF ANY OF THE OTHER CANDIDATES GET THE NOMINATION THE REPUBLICAN PARTY CAN BEND OVER AND KISS ITS BUTT GOODBYE. HUCKABEE;SOLID,MORAL AND MAN OF VISION AND COURAGE.THE FIRST TRUE CONSERVATIVE SINCE THE 80'S
From the looks of the comments, this site is either swarming with Democrats or Children.

I think Huckabee is the only sincier candidate out there.
People who have never read the Constitution should not try to tell other people what is in it.Andrew from Dallas is absolutely right. To judge Mike Huckabee from a Democratic perspective is asinine. I have known Mike very well since his first days as Lt.Gov. I lived in AR for 25 years. I made a campaign bus tour with his wife Janet. They are the real thing, not impostors like the Clintons and most of the others. They are exactly what you see. Mike will be one our truly great Presidents.
Huckabee is the true winner regardless of the result of the Straw Poll.  His comments on how to deal with other candidates are truly remarkable and show him as man of character.  He knows how to edify others without compromising his own conviction.

I will vote for Mike Huckabee...future President of the United States of America.  God bless you, Sir!!  I will pray for you and your future Cabinet.

I hope the mainstream media will focus more on Mr. Huckabee rather than Rudy, Mitt or John.  I usually tune in more if the media talks about or features Mike Huckabee.  He may not have all the campaign fundraising money but I know that a lot of people are doing their part in supporting Mike Huckabee as their presidential candidate. He is the type of "conservative" that I can trust and vote for.

He makes sense... and that's what America needs the most right now!
I have known Mike Huckabee for many years and I assure you he is the Real Deal. As far back as college, Mike showed a capacity to absorb knowledge quickly and accurately.  Mike's executive experience as Arkansas Governor for 10 years has given him contact with foreign governments on the job market level, as well as practical knowledge in successfully leading a Democratic state as a Republican governor.  Mike is from humble beginnings which allows him to easily relate to Americans from all walks of life.  He is not rich with an abundance of funds to finance his way into the White House.  America needs to look at this man closely and see that here is a man who will relate to Republicans and Democrats, as well as Independents.  The reason for that is Mike will do the right thing for the good of the United States of America.  I encourage people to get to know this other Presidential Candidate from Hope, AR.  He and his wife are real quality people who would serve our nation well.
I am, for the first time ever, really excited about the presidential election.  I am praying for and supporting Mike Huckabee in every way I can.  He is the answer to our prayers to bring some kind of sanity back to our country.  He has thought through and shows that he has the knowledge and capacity to make the right decisions for the welfare of the United States.  If our country would elect and truly support Mike Huckabee, it could be the turning point.  We NEED his positive leadership.  He is fair and practical and most importantly, a man of faith who will be working for us.  He would be the most wonderful breath of fresh air.  I was really offended by the comment about the watermelons and not needing a "Gomer Pyle" in office.  I would venture to say that person has personal issues and cannot see a gift when it is right in front of his face.  Maybe Mike could coach him on feeling better about himself and being more positive.  I have never felt better about a presidential candidate than I do about Mike Huckabee.  I will sleep better at night if we can get him elected as President of the United States.
I found Mikes' name and what he stands for on vote smart.com, What he has said so far has compeled me to try to get others interested in the politics of America. I think the FairTax is the best solution by far. Leave evolution alone, the chance of something like a human evolving is 1 followed by 39,000 zeros to 1, that is what science has to say about it.
I LIKE MIKE
Juan -- Im sorry you havent read the Constitution.  No where in the constitution does it state "Seperation between Chruch and State."  That phrase was taken from a personal letter written by Thomas Jefferson by the 1947 secular Supreme Court.  The founding fathers wanted to protect religion in this country, yet not force it down anyone's throat like King George.  It's called Freedom OF Religion, not Freedom FROM Religion.  I think you should move to Europe.
my wife and i heard him speak in Washington DC last year and, immediately, sensed that he was
"presidental material".  We confirmed this with Kelly Ann Conway and others .  That's good enough for us.  He will be the "real deal" and, for the sake of America, he must prevail over HRC
amen, Andrew, in Texas. We listened to Huckabee yesterday. Extremely sincere, educated, level-headed, but maybe that is what some people can't seem to deal with...honesty and integrity!!! He has my vote on Saturday!!! Go Huckabee.
Juan "Hee Haw"

Unlike candidates who say Check My Record and you find where they have contributed filthy sums of money for positive response from those who critiicized them months before, With Huckabee you find a LONG List of satisfied citizens whom he has served with his long list of public service.

Huckabee is very inteligent to hold all the positions he's held for foundations and for promoting education and civic concerns, the way he promoted and served Arkansas as Gov.

Mike Huckabee and his wive are devoted to public service. The highest praises from Katrina victims, for any public official, has been for President Huckabee and First Lady. He and his wive are more than qualified he to lead this country...even citizens who drop useless words with no merit.

you really should give www.explorehuckabee.com a peek, if only for curiosity's sake. At least check it out before slinging more uninformed insults. They discredit yourself, not Huckabee.

HUCKABEE'S GONNA BE PRESIDENT!!!
HUCKABEE'S GONNA BE PRESIDENT!!!

HUCKABEE'S GONNA BE PRESIDENT!!!

LOUD AND CLEAR!!!

HUCKABEE'S GONNA BE PRESIDENT!!!
I prefer Tancredo or Hunter to Mike Huckabee. There is just sompthing so slimy about Huckabee. He makes my skin crawl. I watched the debate last night and was disgusted by how biased Anderson Cooper, host of the CNN/YouTube debate, is against Ron Paul and Tancredo. Paul’s ideas are very mainstream. He stands by the Constitution, and is for America and American citizens. The mass media just keeps trying to shove Huckabee, Romney and the other Republican neocons down the throat of the American people. The new stategy of corporate run media appears to be slandering Paul supporters as fringe dwellers and conspiracy theorists.
