STRONG>From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
In a pre-forum questionnaire on whether or not the candidates are in favor of same-sex marriage, Kucinich and Gravel were the only candidates to respond, “yes.” As a result, they were received warmly. Kucinich was called "so evolved for a member of Congress" and an "outspoken hero." Melissa Etheridge continued the love fest, telling Kucinich, "I hope you always run for president until you are elected. I do, I do."

Kucinich talked a lot about love, saying it "has the power to transform" and concluding his address by telling the audience, "I send you great love." He successfully connected with the audience by talking about his relationship with his wife. "I can't imagine what it would be like meet the love of my life ... and be told we can't be married,” he said. “That would be devastating. Because I understand that, I am ready to be your president."

Gravel, who spoke immediately after Kucinich, continued the love theme, saying, "Anything we need in this world is more love." He said marriage is "a commitment between two human beings in love" and highlighted that the phrase human beings can mean a heterosexual, lesbian, transgender or gay couple.

He also attacked Clinton, Obama and Edwards, saying they are "playing it safe" and admitted his stance on same-sex marriage may be unpopular.

"This is costing votes for us.” Gravel said. “I don't care; I don't want those votes."

Dennis Kucinich Short Biography on PBS 2004 Election Website:

The 57-year-old Ohio congressman has recovered from several near-death political setbacks, but has continued to pursue his goals.

Born in Cleveland in 1946, Kucinich is the oldest of Frank and Virginia Kucinich's seven children, and endured a difficult childhood.

"I come from the streets of Cleveland, from a family that lived in 21 different places by the time I was 17, including a couple of cars. And I'm telling you, it'll be from the streets of Cleveland to Pennsylvania Avenue for a worker's White House and a people's president," Kucinich said in a speech to the Urban League National Convention in Pittsburgh on July 28, 2003.

Kucinich left home when he was 17 years old, renting a $50-a-month walk-up apartment, enrolling at Cleveland State University and working at the copy desk at The Plain Dealer. He attended Cleveland State from 1967-70, but earned his bachelor's degree in speech communications from Case Western Reserve University in 1973. The following year he earned a master's degree in speech communications from Case Western.

At the age of 31, Kucinich became the youngest mayor of a major American city. But two years into his tenure, Cleveland became the first city to go into default since the Great Depression, prompting some members of the media to dub him "Dennis the Menace."

Dennis Kucinich, when speaking of his background, rolled up his shirt sleeve and said: I will not be sold a fake watch, and I will not be sold a fake war.

He VOTED AGAINST the war.

Dennis Kucinich, Peacekeeper.

Very interesting man.
"I hope you always run for president". Maybe some day you may actually win, sometime, somewhen, somewhere over the rainbow, in a more reasonable universe about twelve trillion big bangs from now. Why is there air? Does hell have flush toilets?
What the world needs now is love...sweet love.  This little item made me laugh, which is a good thing.  When you can get presidential candidates waxing poetic about love, it's a good time in my book.

I know these are serious issues but for the life of me, I don't see how you are ready for president because you understand it would be devastating to not be able to marry the person you love.  I understand that.  I guess I should form an exploratory committee too!  Move over, Fred!
Kucinich and Gravel do not have a snowball in hell's chance of being president simply because of their convictions and the fact that they stick by them regardless of what the 'sheeple' say. They are men of principal and decency. The same thing can be said for Ron Paul.
Kucinich is lunatic lefty whack job who isn't able to work anywhere except government.
I'm devastated I can't marry Kucinich's wife too!  Hey-O!
Politics is the art of the possible.
SF's mayor Newsome (an opportunist to the core) may have given the GOP the winning edge when he allowed gay marriage in SF in 2004. In all honesty, I supported the decision at the time. It was fairness.

Give civil unions all the rights of marriage and call it a civil union. In time (10, 15 years?), gay marriage will become reality.

But, for now, why give the holy rollers a rallying issue ??
Hey, Bush Republican, care to expand on that post? I know there's more there than just that... c'mon, lemme have a peek.
Even Tucker Carlson says that he believes in marriage and feels that everyone should be allowed to marry.
Well, I have to agree with M. Boley that Gravel and Kucinich as well as Ron Paul are men of principles.  There is something to be said for knowing when to compromise and standing your ground as well as the proper balance.  I don't know if the above named candidates really know how to do that.  To bad no one candidate could say, "My position is this on X subject and I understand the opposite point of view.  Let us work together to meet in the middle for the good of the contry."
Sierra - Because for the people wanting to get married, it is not a political issue. It is not a means of gaining an advantage or losing an advantage.  It is their life.
M. Boley-That is all the Bush lover's got is arachic juvenile name calling. 70% of the population are in full agreement that the Shrub is an abomination that hopefully we can survive.
Dennis Kucinich is only unelectable because the corporate press says so. The real problem with this country is our culpability in turning our democracy over to Faux TV! Why can't the people vote for the BEST person running? Don't be so hard on Congress for not standing up. They're following our lead.
Why can't people bring themselves to vote for the best person for this country? That is clearly Dennis Kucinich. Don't follow the propoganda of the corporate press!
"70% of the population are in full agreement that the Shrub is an abomination that hopefully we can survive."

I am proud to be a part of that 70%. Let's hope that W doesn't yank the rug out from under our feet and declare martial law and cancel the election. We all know about Bush's fondness for 'signing statements' and his wish to have a dictatorship. The righties cannot deny it as Bush was caught on camera saying it.
Holy Batman M. Boley, don't scare me!!!
M.BOLEY- I concur!  I do not put it past this administration to cook up a bogus terrorists ala Gulf of Tonkin to impose martial law just before the election. Gigolo Rudy tried but thankfully failed to remain on as mayor.
As long as we're throwing around conspiracy theories. I think the left will end up losing in 08, and turn into a bunch of Banana Republic loons thinking anything they do is justified just like the good little communist they are. Don't worry though all those filthy rich propagandist you call leaders will be safe behind their gated communities.
Dave, are you a Levinite by any chance?
M Boley and Juan- thank heavens that I am not the only one having nightmares of Bush signing something, or declaring marital law in order to keep his Presidency going longer than 8 years.

I thought I was being paranoid....
Anne, Juan, and Maureen:

Hey, I wouldn't put it past that crew to pull that stunt. Remember, they were the ones who sent Colin Powell to the UN with a load of steaming BS about Iraq and everybody - well, almost everybody - scarfed it up. So nothing surprises me these days.

I read Stu Bykofsky's piece in the Philly Daily News about how we need another 9/11 to save this country. Astounding... the ignorance is just stupefying! That's all it would take to push this country into a police state.
Bush rep: and GWB couldn't get any jobs except for what daddy set him up with--and still failed at all of them...and ironically enough, GWB ended up in government...hhhmmm maybe they are more alike than you figured.

Sierra, if you were the one waiting to marry the love of your life, waiting to be able to legally protect and provide for that person, and waiting for your relationship to be validated, you would not think that it was ok to wait 10 or 15 years for it to happen.

Remember...separare is NOT equal.
Carrie - Yes, but if gay marriage takes that many more years to pass because we're trying to do it all in one fell swoop, then those people whose life it affects suffer than much longer.  I have to agree with Sierra on this one; incremental change has always been a necessary part of the civil rights movement, and although that is a sad commentary on the slow evolution of people's tolerance, we should not deny reality, and thereby impede our own ability to achieve the final goal because we're too busy looking at the top of the ladder to climb the rungs.  As Obama put it, many rights for African Americans needed to be addressed before miscegenation laws were scrapped, and had they tried it all in one fell swoop, it would have taken that much longer to get any of it done; him  saying this is particularly notable considering miscegenation laws would have made his own parents' union illegal, and his very existence an affront to the law.
To at least 96 per cent of readers — the heterosexuals — the idea that we can be persuaded to change something as fundamental as sexual orientation seems ridiculous. So it is to homosexuals, who make up the remaining 4 per cent and who are often told that their “deviant” behavior is a lifestyle choice. Make it known http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=313
Kucinich is unelectable only because too many people say I love him but he's unelectable so I'm going to vote for . . . . We will always get exactly what we deserve.
Cleveland went into default because the banks punished Kucinich for not selling the public power company to a private corporation, but that is why Dennis is now Cleveland's 6th term Congressman, winning 67% of the vote in '06.  America deserves the real thing for all those who have given their lives for freedom.  Dennis For Peace.
Dennis and Gravel cannot win because the liberal media do not want honest peope to be president.  How can they sell newspapers if the american people vote for honest people.  You have to have people that have some skelatons in the closet and make news by doing stupid things.  That's why Hillary Clinton is leading in the democratic race.  The media would rather see a dishonest person win.
Gravel kucinich paul nader perot carter [conyers?rangel?] united for truth elicit fear smear blacklist.

The people know too much,
democracy rising democracy now.
Rage against the machine.

Honesty compassion intelligence guts.

No more extortion blackmail bribery division.
Divided we fall.
