Leaving Las Vegas (and the rest of NV)

Edwards is moving a handful of staff out of Nevada to focus more on Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, the AP reports. This is a perhaps a reflection of the weakening of the Nevada caucuses -- once thought to play a significant role in this election cycle. The DNC placed Nevada between Iowa and New Hampshire, moving its date up to Jan. 19. But last week, South Carolina announced it will move up its Republican primary to Jan. 19 from Jan. 29. That will likely prompt New Hampshire to move its primary up from Jan. 22 to at least Jan. 12 because of a state law requiring it to be a week ahead of any “similar” contest.

It may also be a reflection of Edwards picking his battles. He was third in money raised after the first two quarters -- well behind Clinton and Obama. Edwards raised $23 million; Clinton raised $62 million and Obama $58 million in primary and general election funds. Edwards was in third place in Nevada, according to a June Mason-Dixon poll, with 12%, behind Clinton with 37% and Obama at 17%.

**** UPDATE **** Edwards' campaign tells the AP:
"Our strategy is unchanged -- four states and $40 million," Deputy Campaign Manager Jonathan Prince said. "As the calendar fluctuates, with Iowa and New Hampshire moving up significantly, we need to accelerate hiring there to hit our organizing targets, so we're shifting some trained staffers there, but we are as committed as ever to winning Nevada."

Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV):
"Candidates have to make the decisions they believe are in the best interests of their campaigns, but I have always said that for a Democrat to win the White House they have to win the West. Any candidate who chooses to ignore Nevada and its rich diversity does so at their own peril."

I think its Edwards picking his battles. And I'll bet he moves most of those Nevada resources to one battle - Iowa. He needs to win there.
I guess John didn't march in too many picket lines in Nevada.  Who's picking the fights here, John or Elizabeth?
The continual Hillary-Obama spats 100% assist Edwards in Iowa.  It's too bad he has to shift resources, but at least he can afford to keep going.  Iowa will be good to him.
Did Liz okay this pull out?  Someone needs to look into this asap!
Well, our former senator and current majority leader is right about one thing--Dems can't win without the west.
The only thing rich about nevada are the unions, Las vegas and Harry reid's sweetheart land deals
Why do you bother to mention General Election Funds...they are irrelevant.  Could it be that you want to try and show Hillary with having raised more money, when the only number that matters is primary funds and he has outraised her?

( these are the subtle games campaigns play and the MSM is contributing to the illusion?  If so shame on you)

keeping them honest.
Harry would say that.
I'm curious - how many of you married people would make a major career decision without consulting your spouse?  How many of you would not even discuss it with him or her but instead act unilaterally despite the fact that your futures are joined together, and what affects one of you will affect the other?

The fact that John and Elizabeth Edwards are in this together is not something to ridicule but to celebrate.  It's rare in this age of divorce to see a couple so committed to each other and their family.  Give them a break for behaving like a married couple should.
This is good news for Richardson.
I doubt Richardson will still be running when Nevada rolls around. And even if he is, I'd like to think the people of NV will base their selection on more than who has been there most.
Governor Richardson's campaign countered the notion of leaving Nevada and invoked Harry Reid's response in a press release:

LAS VEGAS -- Governor Richardson today issued the following statement:

"Senator Reid is right, the road to the White House runs through Nevada. Though other campaigns may waver, I remain committed to campaigning in Nevada," said Governor Richardson. "I hired the first staff, opened the first office, and made the first visit to Elko of any Democratic Presidential candidate because I know that Nevada matters. My growing staff in Nevada is there to reach out to voters one by one, and I will continue to visit the state more than any other candidate. To ignore Nevada is to ignore its diversity, its strength, and the tremendous value of the West to our party and to our country."

The Richardson for President campaign also announced today the hiring of seven new staff members in Nevada. Local Nevadans Maria Mendoza, Josh Krakow, Sarah Ridge, and DJ Premvaree join the campaign as field organizers. Nikita Pierce and Mara Brosy join as Volunteer Coordinators in Las Vegas and Reno, respectively. Meanwhile, Sean Kennedy from Indiana joins the campaign as an organizer with duties including press, scheduling and advance in Northern Nevada.

"Our growing team in Nevada represents the great momentum we're building in the West," said Governor Richardson. "We've brought in strong talent from around the country, while hiring the vast majority of our staff from within the state. These Nevadans have hands-on experience with the issues facing Nevada and close ties to their communities. They are uniquely positioned to help our campaign succeed, and I look forward to working with them on my next trip to Nevada on August 22 and 23."
