Rumsfeld resigned before Election Day

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
Donald Rumsfeld resigned from his post as Secretary of Defense before Election Day 2006, but it was not announced by President Bush until afterwards. Reuters obtained a copy of Rumsfeld’s resignation letter, and it was dated Nov. 6, 2006 -- the day before the mid-term elections, which saw Democrats ride a wave of dissatisfaction with the Iraq war and Republican ethical scandals to take over the U.S. House and Senate.

VIDEO: President Bush announcing Donald Rumsfeld's resignation the day after Election Day.

A stamp on the letter indicates President Bush saw the letter on Election Day.

The news “infuriated some Republicans, who,” according to Reuters, “said their party might have kept more seats in Congress and perhaps kept control of the Senate if Rumsfeld had left before the election.”

We will update when we hear comment from the White House.

**** UPDATE **** In response, the White House said: "One of the things the president wanted to avoid was the appearance of trying to make this a  political decision. That was very important to him, and the American people can appreciate him not playing politics with such an important decision."

You Stupid bastards.
yeah I'm sure it angered a lot of neo cons, but they're only wasting their breathe.  Rumsfeld resigning would not have stopped what happened last november.  Nor will Rove resigning stop the people from wanting them all held accountable for what they've done.  On with the hearings, I want them all behind bars.
Lots of Republicans seem to think that Rumsfeld's resignation would have fixed the election, but there was so much going wrong it's hard for me to imagine how that's possible.
Dave-Yeah right you the typical defender of the Stupid bastards. What goes around comes around...kismet.....ying/yang or whatever people in Tenn calls it.

The crowded field of presidential hopefuls isn't crowded enough to suit Michigan voters, who prefer two unannounced candidates for the Republican and Democratic nominations, a new Detroit News/WXYZ-TV poll shows.

Former Tennessee Sen. and TV star Fred Thompson would lead the GOP pack and former Vice President Al Gore would top the Democratic slate should they decide to run, according to a statewide survey of 400 likely Republican and 400 likely Democratic primary voters in Michigan conducted last Wednesday through Monday by EPIC/MRA of Lansing.

thank bush for electing more dems and more dems will be elected not only to whitehouse but congress as well, thank you bush.
"You Stupid bastards."   Welcome to the "party." "Stupid" is best-case scenerio.
This is not news; Bush admitted this fact shortly after the elections.  He bluntly implied that he lied to the American people because of the election.  Another notch in his attempts for restoring dignity to the office.
"Dave-Yeah right you the typical defender of the Stupid bastards." Just because I don't want to see this country turned into a Socialist wasteland doesn't mean I support everything these clowns have done.
"......and the American people can appreciate him not playing politics with such an important decision."

When will those idiots realize the administration speaks for less than 30% of the American people, if that.  Every press release that implies this neo cons speak for anybody is ridiculous.

Besides, everyone knows whatever this whitehose did was with the dominant eye towards political B.S.
Yet another stupid mistake by lil georgie. What a surprise.
What a shame! All of the vemon and hateful remarks posted here make this site one that is extremely hard to take seriously. It would seem that you would be discussing ideas and thoughts about how your candidate will go about winning the next election. After all, President Bush isn't running again.
Thank God that Bush doesn't play politics with important decisions.
I think those Republicans are right. If Bush had fired Rumsfeld prior to the election many fence sitters would have seen hope that the president was finally going to change his Iraq policy and no party switch was necessary. With Bush's staunch support for Rumsfeld going into the election those same fence sitters felt that change would only come with a change in party.
Dave, Tn--They had most of seven years of complete control over all three branches of Government. Why weren't they able to legislate conservatives into paradise? How many years do you guys need to take care of all the bogey men? Or is a permanent bogey man kind of a good thing to have when you want a permanent majority? Islamic Bogey man, liberal bogey man, socialist bogeyman, secular humanist bogeyman, Gay/Lesbian bogeypeople. Geez, how do you sleep at night with all those monsters under your bed?
Anne, are you really Laura Bush? We know you're thrilled your husband isn't running again and that you're going to dump his ass as soon as he's out of office. Fess up Laura!
Speaking of "playing politics". Here a perfect end to a DEMOCRAT career of playing politics.

You are exactly right Anne! These Moonbats hate conservatives so bad they will stop at nothing to smear them! I come here to get a good laugh and get them fired up. They are quite histerical and even more irrelevant!

Dave, sounds like you are really sore to bring up Mike Nifong. Stretching things a bit, huh?

Lemme tell ya somethin'... Nifong is a Grade-A jackass regardless of his 'party label'. And let's not forget that Grade-A jackasses are found in BOTH parties so your point really has no relevance in the first place.
peace to the rhubarb fetus!
Good move Dave TN, change the subject, pathetic. Ever thought of being Bush's White House press secretary/
oh please...not look like a political decision? everything that is done in DC is a political decision.  just a cover for his incompetence in reading the American public.  where was rove's advice at the time?
Anne--There is the small matter of an illegitimate war and the drip drip drip of unnecessary blood that keeps some of us awake at night and hopping for justice for Administrative malpractice. Besides neither party has a very good record stopping war when it needs to be stopped. That has, in the past, required angry citizens shouting impolitely at elected morons.
“I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.”
Barry Goldwater
Rupert, DC--So you take time out of your busy day to come to an irrelevant site and fire up a bunch of "moonbats"???
And that makes you what? An intelligent "moonbat" harasser?
Thank you for your concern but there is no effort involved in smearing anybody. They handle that quite well themselves.
Even if that were the case Hysterical, Irrelevant Moonbats have very little credibility and their smears would probably not be taken seriously by the vast 29% majority that still support Bush.
So your good efforts are all for nothing which makes you, how should I put this, irrelevant.
But you have come to the right place!
I hear-by nominate, Rupert, DC, for full "Irrelevant Moonbathood". Can anybody second my emotion!!?
Dave-Tn,
why is it a democrat?  the word is not mentioned at all in the article.  and here I thought you were a few steps ahead of jerry.  to paraphrase ann coulter, "neo-cons should be shot on sight".
I second it Gary. What goes around comes around. This is such a typical republican smear tactic. It is the only way republicans can get any press now. They can not talk about how great there president is, how they have captured Osama, how they are to afraid to fight for our rights, how great the Iraq war is going, accept torture as standard practice in wartime, etc. etc. These repubs can only use fear an smear tactics like Rudy G. Instead of talking how great they are they have to go out and create fear and smear opponets to get elected.  Sad to see the Republican party go to such low depths. WAIT I forgot, they are the party of GOD. They can do no wrong, so these idiots actually feel justified. They can continue to use fear and smear anyone who does not agree with them. GOD JUSTIFIES IT.
"stupid bastards'??  Yeah, for sure..... But scroo'm.
bobf, they sing "With God On Our Side"-Bob Dylan
Gary Moonbat, quit picking on the poor, picked on republican... they are VERY sensitive folks that can dish it out but not take it. You hurt Ruperts feelings. I second that!
Rupert Irrelevant Moonbat, I'll second that! Send Mr. sensitive to Iraq for awhile, that will toughen him up.
