Huckabee: ‘I’m not the best fund raiser’

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
After Huckabee finished a surprising second in the Ames straw poll, political analysts and strategists have asked this question: Can he raise the kind of money needed to be considered a first-tier candidate?

But in a meeting with reporters today, Huckabee cast some doubt on whether or not he has the ability to do that -- revealing, in fact, that he doesn’t particularly like fundraising, especially making cold calls on his own behalf. “I’m not the best fund raiser in the world,” he said, adding that there are some people who are “unabashed” about asking for money. “Will you give me $2,300?” Huckabee said mockingly.

He admitted he feels “a hesitancy” in “asking for money for me.” But as one reporter pointed out to him, shouldn't Huckabee, a former Baptist preacher, be comfortable passing around the basket to ask for spare change? He responded jokingly by clearing the place settings off two empty plates next to him and began to pass them around the room, asking if anyone would like to donate.

He said he has “no problem” asking for money when it’s for “missions” or other worthwhile charitable causes, but has a harder time when it comes to asking for himself. “I’m getting better about it,” Huckabee said. He later added that after his finish at Ames, there are “a couple [of Republican fundraisers] in particular that when their names come out, it’ll be significant.”

But when most of the reporters had left the room, Huckabee talked more about his fundraising tentativeness. “I don’t like to cold call people who don’t even know me,” he said. “It’s difficult calling someone, and you say, ‘Hi, this is Mike Huckabee. I’m calling for Mr. Smith.’ ‘How do you spell that?’ ‘H-U-C-K…’ ‘And who are you with?’ ‘I’m with myself.’ It’s like, man, I ain’t got time for this. Let me at least talk to someone who knows my name.”

Okay, okay, I get it already, Mike: You're a sweet unassuming southern gentleman who approaches everything with your trademark "aww-shucks, I ain't all that great" response. Hey, it's almost like you don't even want the presidency, you're just doing it because it's the right thing for America. (I can picture your focus group right now coming up with the idea around the boardroom table). I know Im supposed to be saying "Gee, what a real, down-to-earth, regular guy. He's got my vote!!". But I can see right through you, buddy. Knock it off already, and quit patronizing me. I'm not going to laugh at your jokes.
Here's what the Huck-ster wants me to think: "Gee, what a down to earth, regular, good ol' southern gentleman. He can really relate to my concerns and problems because he's so human. I think I'll vote for that guy because he's such a breath of chivalrous fresh air in dirty American politics. It won't be more of the same if this guy's in charge!"

Huckabee: I can see right through you. Your self-denigrating jokes are as patronizing as they are fake.
Hey Mike if you cannot ask for funds to help you win then you will not be able to ask any of our national enemys to stop doing things that will KILL us, so GET OFF THE STAGE and go HOME to your mommy.

Now I see how Clinton got elected in Arkansas, it must only take 6.50 to run a campaign, because that is what you must have gotten when you ran.

Please leave the building like Elvis.
My problem with Huckabee is his rejection of evolution. We already know how science and medical research take a hit in federal funding when a religious nut is in the Oval Office. I'm not willing to have another Bush Brain who consults Biblical ignorance before he decides for the country.
People, I'm from Arkansas.  Suffered 10 years under this creep.  He is the furthest thing from a humble guy who doesn't like asking for money.  While Guv, he accepted over $150,000 in suits from a wealthy business man in Little Rock.  He accepted uncounted gifts.  Had a "wedding shower" to fill his newly purchased large home after he stepped down as Guv.  Also by some miracle, received a premium price for his run down lake cabin from a supporter that allowed him to buy the new large home.  Also had no problem flying the state airplane to the point of breaking down, to get to his lake cabin.  Though he always said the trip was state biz.  The Huck has a lot of baggage I hope comes out if he starts rising in the ranks of candidates.  Ask more Arkansans about this guy before you support him.
Don't be a grouch, my friend. Anyone with any political experience will tell you that asking for money is the hardest part of campaigning, especially for the candidate. Huckabee has a clear track record of honesty and it shows here.

Governor Huckabee, go ask for money... Now. =D
Gee. It seems like Tom and Thomas think alike, write alike, and are coincedently from the same town.  Sometimes what appears to be stereotype are really a reflection of someones actual personality because they come from a culture where that is typical.  If there is some sinister Machavellian political demon under his not atypical Southern veneer it will eventually manifest itself. Give the man a chance.  He certainly appears the most appealing of the bunch from what I have seen. If you are looking for fake, look no further than Romney.
Demos from the left coast are FAKE,  Give us Nancy Pelosi.. we need a flat or fair tax.. fiscal responsibility..  Mike Huchabee is a good guy.. what's wrong w/ a sense of humor..Thomas from Sacramento ?? Ha!
Huckabee is not a huckster.  He is a sincere candidate who has worked his way from the bottom up.
Anyone who endorses the FairTax can't be that bad, after learning that about him, I'm goign to have to give Huckabee a second look.
Mike Huckabee is a great guy for a fair tax & fiscal resposibility, without alot of $$.. I can see right thru all the candidates, like Hillary !!
What if he's real?  I'd like to think Hillary, Barack or John are real, but, eh.  I'd like it if Elizabeth Edwards ran and asked them all what makes them tick.
I like Mike. I love his FAIR TAX ideas. The Homeschool Legal Defense Association has endorsed him, and as a Homeschool dad that means a lot to me. Nobody can claim the man isn't disciplined, just look at his health practices. He appears to have a solid relationship with the Creator of the Universe, and he's got my vote.
There's a strong probability that nobody that frequents or comments on MSNBC.com would vote Republican unless someone threatened the life of a family member, so practice what you preach, stop patronizing the rest of us by commenting like you care about Mike Huckabee.  Thanks.
Lol!  Gotta love how the rabid Ron Paul supporters try to twist to negative the intentions of every candidate other than Ron Paul.  The Ron Paul spam serves only one purpose:  It annoys people.
I personally think this guy is sincere and not looking for handouts without earning it. He is a christian and seems to be a good guy. I'm not gonna vote for a women or a non-christian for president .... could you imagine a women during conflict/war? Huckabee is the man for me, conservative, family oriented, and pro-life...You say good ol southern boy...I say thank GOD for him.
I'm not so cynical to believe that everybody running for office has some ulterior motive, so Huckabee's statements strike a chord with this voter. Given the chance, I'll cast my vote for him and his down-to-earth quality over the slick political image machine that seems to be driving many of the other candidates. I think Huck just may be the real deal - and I for one find that refreshing.
He has no chance. He came is second with 3000 votes. Big deal
Have you ever been asked to raise money from strangers?  It's not easy, and I think it is genuine on Mike Huckabee's part that he doesn't relish the task.  Whether you like him or not, that aversion to fundraising does not have to be contrived--it can be quite real, and I can relate to it.
What Mike Huckabee doesn't realize by making that comment is that it sounds like he doesn't feel like he's worth the money to become President. It's not about asking for money for yourself, it's about raising money to help get elected. Mitt Romney is the only candidate I feel deserves the money because he has the confidence that he is the leader this country needs. Even if I don't agree with everything he says I feel he is the kind of leader we need as our next President. He's worth the money he raises for his campaign!
Karl Rove is a "winnie". And I approve of this message.
The Huckster is just like the rest of the pols, he hates to ask for money face to face, would rather steal it behind your back.
I suppose it's possible that it's just an act, but having observed him for some time, long before this little surprise in Iowa, I think it's actually genuine.
Thomas, Thomas, why are you a doubting Thomas?  Huckabee is the guy who lived in a mobile home in Arkansas while the governor's quarters were being renovated (to save taxpayers money).  He's also the guy who lost > 100 lbs (to save his family's grief over a premature death).  He's the first person on his side of the family (from what I understand) to get a high school education  (yeah, a "HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION").  So, all I'm saying is you can't count him out, especially someone who got %18 of the IOWA straw poll with pretty much no money.  Apparently, someone found him genuine enough to vote for...
I think he is authentic.  I appreciate a candidate that doesn't take themselves so seriously.

If you want target fake people - look at the Democrats who decide what their position will be by sticking their finger up in the wind.
It's one thing to promote and campaign for a cause - and it is hard to campaign and fundraise for a relatively unknown candidate.  but how the heck do you think they become "known"? Get a grip Huckabee - if you can't campaign for yourself - why should we? Apparently you DON'T have what it takes which translates into NO VOTES.
Hes not a good fund raiser? Oh he'll make a REAL GOOD president.NOT!
Hes a Christian! OH wow, that MUST make him genuine and a good guy. Give me a break! So hes going to shove his phoney "christian" ideas down our throats is all that means. Pastor Ted, Jim Baker, Jimmy Swaggart were "christians" too. We don't even know this guy.
dont forget our wacko president bb. hes christian too and hes responsible for thousands of deaths and starting a war on lies..broke just about every commandment.huckabee wants to be just like him too.
Actually, fund raising has very little to do with the ability to be president.  Bush was a great fundraiser...enough said?  Romney will probably fall in the same trap.
The Huckster is running for president and hes afraid of raising and managing money?
bill clinton is a christian too
bb, might I suggest you research? ;-)
I-Heart-Huckabee.  I also think evolution, the idea the earth is round, the idea that the earth revolves around the sun, and global warming are just bad science.
I don't care the Huckabee is Christian or wears that as a badge of honor, little concerned about lack of science in his positions, but primarily I disagree with the Fair Tax. It sounds good and abolishing the IRS is correct, but the Fair Tax only replaces the income tax with a national sales tax. We need to cut spending, only pay for necessary federal services and departments like the military, and reduce the overall tax bill. Just replacing one wrong tax with another is not any smarter than the status quo.

I'm not a Ron Paul spammer but I do think he is more fiscally responsible and constitutional than Huckabee. Meanwhile Huckabee is probably better than the other candidates, Rep or Dem. Does he want to end the war, though? No.

My vote will be for Ron Paul because I think his policies are best, not because of his religion (same as Huckabee), or self-made down-to-earth character. Policies, what they will do, or not do, in DC is what matters.

Sam, you were the first person to mention Ron Paul, before any "spammers" disparaged Huckabee.
I am also an Arkansan who LOVES Huckabee. When he left office, he left us with over $800 million in revenue surplus, which he wanted to give back to the tax-payers. The only reason that didn't happen was the state legislature.

As for his views on evolution, it doesn't mean that he denies micro evolution... only macro-evolution. If the universe is finite... with a beginning (which the big-bang theory supposes), then there must have been an uncaused first cause... God.
I believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, a winnable war in Iraq, Bush as a truth-teller, and Mike Huckabee.  Amen.
Brian,

I just listened to Mike Huckabee answer a question on evolution on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-BFEhkIujA

From what I just heard Mr. Huckabee say, it appears he is very open to the possibility that God used the evolutionary "process" to do much, and possibly all, of his creating. He spoke of God being "active in the creation process." He said he believes "God created this process." He then added, "How did he do it, when did he do it, and how long did it take I don't know."

Though I believe his words were carefully chosen so as to not offend biblical litetralists, it does not appear to me that Huckabee rejects evolution, as you say he does. Rather it seems that he only rejects totally godless evolution, the belief that we were not, by some means, created by God.
How can anyone that does not believe in evolution ever think they can be elected?  What a dumbass.
