Michelle Obama, all fired up

Posted: Thursday, August 16, 2007 4:11 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Carrie Dann
And you thought Elizabeth Edwards was all fired up.

At a rally in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Michelle Obama showed just how fiery we can expect her to be as her husband's battle for the Democratic nomination heats up.

"Think! Listen!" she implored during an impassioned introduction of her husband today, "The game of politics is to make you afraid, so that you don't think!"

Her introduction was a super-charged version of Barack Obama’s stump speech, which has increasingly vilified the bleak status quo of a rigid Washington establishment. But where he, highlights hope, his wife warned today of the consequences of fear. Jabbing a pointed finger in the air, she derided a political system in which "every decision that we've made over the past 10 years wasn't FOR something, but was because people told us we had to fear something."

She put a hard edge on her husband’s "war that never should have been waged" applause line, too, exclaiming, "We are in this war because for eight years; we were told to be afraid!"

In recent weeks, Elizabeth Edwards -- who's taken potshots at both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama -- has been the political spouse perceived as the one doing the dirty work for her candidate. But today, there was no mistaking Michelle Obama's subtle jabs at her husband's opponents, as she compared his U.S. Senate run to the current race for the White House. At the beginning of his Illinois run, she said, he ran against a "billionaire" and a "strong political family" believed to be unbeatable. She was referring to businessman Blair Hull and pedigreed Illinois politician Daniel Hynes, whom Obama defeated in the Democratic primary, but the parallels to the Clintons are clear.

As she completed her introduction of Barack Obama, she called him "the man I love, who I would rather have home with me ... but who I am willing to sacrifice, because we have this window of opportunity, a chance to make something real happen."

She  sounds like a strong, intelligent, and wonderful companion for a presidential candidate. In my opinion, she would make a great first lady.  Others may have those attribute, but Michelle would be really terrific.

THINK, LISTEN.

That's a total of two people in this entire country trying to get us to listen & think.

Michelle Obama and Keith Olbermann.

Well it's a start.
I think there are two elements to the question of candidates families.

One is the extent to which they are fair political game. I think this is up to them. Certainly Elizabeth Edwards, Jeri Thompson Kehn and Bill Clinton are political figures and open to criticism. On the other hand, Cindy McCain, Ann Romney and Barbara Richardson seem to keep lower profiles and deserve substantially more privacy.

The second element is the degree to which spouses and other family members are assets to the campaign. I don’t think Elizabeth Edwards has done her husband any favors this week, but he’s playing catch-up so I could be wrong. Giuliani’s continuing family soap opera is clearly a liability.
And the most famous candidate spouse, Bill Clinton brings a mixed blessing, combining more than a whiff of scandal with prodigious political and fund-raising skills. So far I’d have to say Michelle Obama has struck exactly the right note.

I do believe candidate’s children should be accepted as campaigners but exempted from attacks and media scrutiny. Giuliani’s daughter’s Facebook page, the Romney boys military status, and Chelsea’s boyfriend’s intentions are none of my business.
Go Michelle Obama.  You are a classy First Lady to be and can talk to issues rather than personal disagreements. Keep up the good words!
she speaks the truth, more than elizabeth, and it's not a desperate, frustrated cry. Impassionate reasoning is what I call it. Very appealing to me. Let's hope it also is to America.
Michelle and Elizabeth, now there's two women that ought to be running for president instead of Hillary. Only time you see fire coming from Hillary is when she catches......never mind.
Go Michelle!  What an amazing woman!  She's increasingly becoming an asset in this campaign.
She's right - Obama is the right man for the job!
I am neither Democrat nor Republican as I am so disillusioned by both parties. It is about time
our country has a leader who knows how to be a statesman and who has ventured outside this country before he is put in the Office of President.  How anyone could vote for a man who was so narrow minded as to never venture outside the US is beyond me. I would very much like to see either a woman or black man become our next President. At this juncture I have yet to make up my mind. I think most of the citizens in this country would fall over dead from the shock if we ever got an honest President in Office.
She is so right on. Fear is our enemy.
Great job Michelle, I think she can best sum up the 44th president since she is married to him. Elizabeth Edwards isn't the only one that can speak, Michelle is far more accomplished than her and I hope she proves it as she continues to campaign on behalf of her husband.
the link didn't work. it was an anti hillary video! i wanna see michelle!
Thanks for the link, Yiannis.  That video is GREAT!  OBAMA '08!!
Michelle Obama is a remarkable woman. Really she is a MAGOR asset in this race. She is what we call "real", she is like one of the family. You relate to her instantly. Go on you tube and check out some of her speeches. She will touch and inspire so many....she will be an incredible First lady !! She will have a huge influence on the people of the country. The Obama's are a powerful combination...And will serve the country well !
She's right, fear has been a central theme in every GOP candidates campaign since even before 9/11.  I don't think the permanent repulican majority would've lasted this many years without sept 11th.  Did anyone see the Daily Show last night?

  http://youtube.com/watch?v=S9YuD9kYK9I

I think this video provides a good excuse to start up criminal proceedings for Dick Cheney.  He already got away with Treason when outed agent Plame.  He obviously knew exactly what would happen if we invaded Iraq and they still made all those mistakes!!!?   He used your fear to wage a war he knew full well he couldn't win.  And he did it for profits for Haliburtn and the Carlyle group.  Cheney is pure evil.
GO MICHELLE OBAMA!!!
I think Michelle might make a good first lady but she has the wrong name for me. In the USA I feel like we should keep people from here and with In God We Trust.  This race will be interesting.
Now, let's see in the 54 years I've been on this earth I have been told to fear the devil, godless Communists, socialism of any form, violent crime, and, now, al-Quaida and global terrorists.  In all of those 54 years I have never once been harmed by any of these entities.  However, I have been harassed by Jehovah's witnesses and Mormons in my home, been literally ripped off from part of my retirement by good old-fashioned American capitalists, been watching at least 30% of Americans go without basic necessities while more people become millionaires, seen non-violent white-collar criminals steal more money than any armed-robber ever dreamed of and I worry more about what is being done to this country by my leaders than I care about another terrorist attack.

Read the math!!!! The only fear does is make a person wish to feal safe.  To feel safe we become compliant to those who say they can do so. When you are compliant, you give up your brain and your backbone.  It's time to throw the burden off of our shoulders and begin to feel hope instead of the despair of fear.
Dems didn't have enough Ritalin for Liz.  Now they have to come up with some for Michelle too?

All three of the major Dem candidates can't blather enough by themselves, so they have to drag their spouses into it?
Excuse me, and who's running for President?  I would rather see a fear-less President not a fear-less First Lady.  Is Obama ready?
jerry/corpus christi texas: I'm surprised. I had long ago given up any hope that you were capable of any coherent thought and anything beyond mindless sloganeering and name calling. Congradulations.
Michelle Obama; "Listen! Think!"
Laura Bush; "War is peace!  Freedom is slavery!  Ignorance is strength!"
The funny thing is that almost all ( except one) these "Conservative" candidates have been divorced, or had multiple marriages. Guiliani even told the press he was seperating before he told his wife. The "liberal" Democratic canndidates are all in long, happy, supportive marriages. Well maybe family values is for everybody else ? The "Conservatives" are supporting a misguided conflict under a false premise that is resulting in the  killing hundreds of INNOCENT PEOPLE. More family values. We have wasted billions and billions of dollars and accomplished nothing. This money could have been spent on infrastructure and education, assisting our returning troops and real security measures for our country. I am confident that Barack Obama is the man for the job. Godspeed to Barack and Michelle Obama !
Robert Catalano - my guess is next year we'll be told over and over again how we should fear Mexican migrant workers. And it could work. I think the Democrats have two threats to winning the election they really ought to. One is Clinton and the other is immigration.
Thanks for the link, Yiannis !!
Too bad this couldn't be used as a TV ad !!

Hillary Clinton,
15 years of dishonesty, scandal and shamelessness
Hard Right, please. Michelle was speaking passionately about change and why her husband is the person to bring about that change. She wasn't out attacking other candidates like Mrs. Edwards. The woman is a powerful speaker, just as eloquent as her husband. He's lucky to have her.
America was attacked - are we not supposed to have some fear? - I mean afterall isn't it unwise to become complacent and ignore the fact that there are terroists groups, religious fanatics, and other countries in this world who want to do us harm, who would love nothing more than to see America fall.  I agree that a fear campaign is not a way to run a campaign, but to run on a campaign that would disregard the dangers doesn't seem wise to me either.  To quote Mrs. Obama, "Listen, think" - Well...I'm "listening" and I "think" I would rather keep my head out of the sand and err on the side of caution, thank you very much.
Whip out the jello and let the two even add Hillary and her thighs and let them go at it. I would pay big money to watch Mrs Obama kick butts
go michelle.
Watching the fear and its exploitation post 9/11 it's clear that Michelle Obama is correct and batting on the right wicket.  To deny the thrust of her central point is to be in denial.  Keep on keeping on MO, hit those sixes and fours!
The post makes it sound like she was a little out of control this morning, but that really wasn't the case.  She was very thoughtful, yet sharp with her comments.  Just wanted to clarify that.

I didn't know she would be there to introduce, but I came away from the event very impressed with both of the Obamas.  I'm still undecided, but Obama got me more fired up than any of the other leading Dems I've seen recently.
I don't know why first read didn't include a link to the video...

Michelle Obama seem a great and intelligent person
Well, she sure is right about the fear stuff.  And, it's true, we tend to be reduced to voting for the "lesser of two evils".  It's a sad state.  I like Obama so much, but I still fear he is too green for this "point" in history.  Dub is going to leave a horrendous mess, and sadly, I think we might need a washington insider to properly use the channels to clean it up.  As nice as his rhedoric sounds, not sure yet.  He's got time to work on me, though.
AC, pardon me, but what the freak are you talking about?  Her NAME?  Are you referring to Michelle, or Obama?  Lordy, if we are voting for people based on their skin color, gender, or NAME... rather than substance, man oh man, are we in deep doo doo.
Michelle is trying out to be the new Oprah.
David - How is Elizabeth Edwards a political figure?  Has she ever run for office?  Has she ever been a political pundit?  A lobbyist?  Anything of that nature?  No, she is married to a man who is a political figure, and she supports him in his efforts to become president.  That makes her a good wife, not a political figure.

Go Michelle08
FL, we were attacked once with a coordinated effort by a band of well-prepared radicals who were willing to die for what they believed in.  In turn, we attacked the country, Afghanistan, who was harboring them.  We defeated the Taliban and we would have defeated al-Quaida at that point if we hadn't mucked around and become involved in Iraq.  The fear would have subsided, al-Quaida would hav been reduced to a lunatic fringe with little or no support and Osama b-n-Laden would have been caught and put on trial.  Instead, we've created a terrorist breeding ground, a militray quagmire and an unstable government in Iraq.  To tell you the truth, I fear the incompetence and arrogance of this Administration more than I feae another terrorist attack.  Besides, you have a better chance of being hit by lighting than you do being killed in a terrorist attack on American soil.  I haven't seen this Administration trying to attack God for throwing lightning bolts down LOL.
What fear? We live in the best country on the face of the earth. Our government always tries to do the best it can to protect us. Whether it was the Clintons or Bushes in the White House. The only fear that seems to be there is the fear that the government cannot protect us. The economy is good, food is plentiful, unemployment is less than 5%. Try living in Eastern Europe or the Middle East. Try any country in Africa also. Most Americans would have trouble with the living conditions in most of the rest of the world. I can tell you there is nothing like going to Malaysia to make the good old US of A seem so sweet. Americans, in general, have no perspective of how lucky they are. Only 27% of Americans have passports. less than 1 in 3 have ever left the country. I'll bet that most that do go to tourist locations, stay in comfortable hotels, and ride around air-conditioned coaches with a tour guide. If you really get a chance to see the real population, you will realize how lucky you are to be an American citizen. I wondering who exactly lives in fear?
Obama is too ahead of his time. This country will not be ready for a leader like him for atleast another 10-15 yrs.
Fred Thompson 08!
Amazed: 'I like Obama so much, but I still fear he is too green for this "point" in history.'
Do you think that only Washington 'insiders' can save us ? Aren't they the ones that got us into this mess ??
Biden, Dodd and Clinton were the 'experienced' insiders who all helped get us into Iraq. Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, Rice and that who gang were 'experienced' Look where they took us.

It takes wisdom, integrity and insight at this point in history. Obama has all these qualities !!
FL - you've given the makings of a strawman argument, by suggesting that without fear we have complacency.

The opposite of fear isn't complacency. Those lacking fear might be complacent, but its illogical to assume they are.

I'm not afraid of my electrical outlets, but with a child in the house I'm also not complacent - we have those little plastic covers into the ones we're not using.
David, I disagree.  Romney's sons are not "boys", but are grown men who are out campaigning for their dad and have their own website stating their views on issues that affect all of us, so I don't believe they should fall into the same catagory as the minor children of the other candidates.  Further, Mitt Romney supports the Iraq war, as does his sons.  They (all of his sons) should be willing to put their lives where there mouth is - serving their country by helping fight this ugly war.  And not by just traveling around the country supporting their dad for president.
Michelle Obama is correct - we have been told to "be afraid" continually for the past six years by the Bush administration.  That is exerting control over the people to get us support their positions and serioulsy flawed plans.  She is, without a doubt, an outstanding woman - strong and honest.  She has so much more character than Laura Bush ever hoped to have.  She would actually make a differenc in the White House.  She would not be a stepford wife!
ac Warren - you are an idiot!

And fl states "America was attacked - are we not supposed to have some fear? - I mean afterall isn't it unwise to become complacent and ignore the fact that there are terroists groups, religious fanatics, and other countries in this world who want to do us harm, who would love nothing more than to see America fall. "
So, you want to live in fear?  Great - the terrorist won.  No one is asking that we be complacent, but lets not let fear control us and how we live our lives.  Because so much fear has been instilled in so many Americans, what you fear is indeed happening - America is falling.  We are loosing constitutional freedoms everyday, thanks to this Administration.  We are loosing our middle class, our freedon to speak out (having our patriotism questioned if we do not agree with the Bush administration) and the most divided nation we have ever had.  Have you ever hear the saying: Divide and conquer?  That is what has happened to our wonderful country.  So, go ahead and be afraid - be very afraid.  But I believe it is your own government you need to be afraid of.  I refuse to live in fear.
Oh, some of the worst "religious fanatics" live right here in the US.   And they are not muslims.
Yiannis, Baltimore, MD

Yes- thanks for the link.
A badly edited, misleading piece of crap that does more to damage Obama, by association, than to Senator  Clinton.
I would venture that when the Obama campaign (and I emailed the link to them.) sees this dreck with their name on it, that they immediately call for their logo and campaign info to be removed.

Thanks for the link, Yiannis !!
Too bad this couldn't be used as a TV ad !!

Hillary Clinton,
15 years of dishonesty, scandal and shamelessness

Sierra, San Francisco

Sierra-

Hillary-haters Myth#1

"She'll do/say anything to win/get elected."

Yet she won't say she made a mistake and repudiate her vote on Iraq in 2002, when other candidates have, this despite the fact that it has caused her lots of criticism from the left-wing of her party. If she'll say/do anything, why not this?

Where are the stories to back up this lie/myth? Tales of the terrible things she did and the lies she's told in her election campaigns should be the stuff of legend by now, if there was any basis in FACT.

You will see the usual suspects repeat this accusation/slander over and over and not ONCE do you ever see an example. Where are the examples?

Van
FL you may want to think about your statement...the opposite of fear is courage. Something the Washington insiders have lacked as of late.
