Iraq

The New York Times op-ed by eight members of the 82nd Airborne division stationed in Iraq will be very difficult for the White House and other supporters of the surge to push back on.  "The claim that we are increasingly in control of the battlefields in Iraq is an assessment arrived at through a flawed, American-centered framework. Yes, we are militarily superior, but our successes are offset by failures elsewhere. What soldiers call the ‘battle space’ remains the same, with changes only at the margins. It is crowded with actors who do not fit neatly into boxes: Sunni extremists, Al Qaeda terrorists, Shiite militiamen, criminals and armed tribes. This situation is made more complex by the questionable loyalties and Janus-faced role of the Iraqi police and Iraqi Army, which have been trained and armed at United States taxpayers’ expense."

If you have a President who believes that God is on his side, if you have a President that believes that he and he alone knows what is right, then I believe you have a President who believes in the principles led which led to the Crusades.Might makes right.Short sighted tomfoolery.
Since so many seem to believe that followers of Islam want to kill all non-believers, why should our troops be in Iraq and Afghanistan?  If they are non-believers, then they are legitimate targets for Shiites, Sunnis, Kurds and all others who follow the tenets of Islam.

Democratic elections, a new government, new laws in Iraq mean nothing if the people of the country and in the government place their religious beliefs above all else.  Not being a scholar and knowing little about the religion, I wonder if all the sects have their own interpretation of the Koran.  Some may be more militant in their beliefs than others.  Our mainstream churches have their own interpretation of the Bible and what it means to be a Christian.
Ayep, I forgot. One of the names given to Christ was "Prince Of Peace."
Make no mistake, George W. Bush is responsible for the violence in Iraq, and elsewhere.  Bush chose violence in choosing to invade Iraq, rather than letting the UN weapons inspectors continue doing their jobs.  Bush chose violence towards Iraqis and muslims rather than diplomacy.  The US was not defending itself against a weak Iraq.  What a joke. and the 9/11 terrorists came from Saudi Arabia.  Don't talk about that crap that Saddam was worse.  Bush has killed and dispaced more Iraqis than Saddam or the Iraq-Iran war ever did.  Bush caused this war, and he is too much of a coward to end it.  Bush has brought shame to America as an agressor.
Tam: I disagree. Islam has a unique psychosis of its own that is not shared by any other major religion. It vests this in the incluculation of its youth into deliberate psychological patterns of hatred, again, which no other major world religion shares. Its religious madrassas are formed for one purpose and one purpose only. To forment hatred. Allegiance to the group is paramount. Any deviation from this pattern invites death. [which is why all Islamic contrarians, including Hirsi[Ali] and Rushdie, have or are placed under death decrees. No other major religion extant acts in such a manner]. Brainwashing youth in order to raise these up as violent ''martyrs''is a psychosis. Not a religion. No other major religion on the planet utilizes childrens programming or education for the specific purpose of instilling racial and religious hatred to be settled by violent acts. Islam alone, acts in such a manner.[Its exhibitions are vile to the point of insanity, which western human rights organizations have been too complicant or too cowardly to adress. One example, taken from a third grade math textbook in Gaza: ''You have eight apples and a Jew steals five of them. How many are left''? The usual lurid ''blood libel''tales wend through school textbooks at all grade levels throughout the Middle East. Cartoon characters, usually ripped off from Disney[''Farfour Mouse''] and even the older ''Romper Room''are used to instill violent, suicidal rage in children as young as three and four years of age]. These are blasphemies at any religious or secular level. A gross, universal form of rampant child abuse and no-one is doing anything about it. Not the EU,nor the UN,nor the aforementioned ''human rights''NGOs. Christianity and Judaism simply do not rise to such levels of degradation, universally applied,in todays world.
Gary: This is less a ''gloat''then it is a reality. You forget that for every ''Cheney Energy Meeting''there were Democrats beholden to the powerful UAW and TEAMSTERS unions scared to death of imposing rational fuel standards. The idea that this can be placed at the feet of Bush is ludicrous on its face when stacked against the American perpensity to drive vehicles and purchase homes and travel to destinations utilizing a total defficiency of energy conservation standards. It is these,as well as both parties of Congress that are patently at blame in this area. Then too, presidents as far back as Truman have recognized the strategic importance of protecting the oil lanes of the Middle East. This neither began, nor ends, with Bush.

Errata: The previous post adressed should read ''Mark Y'',not ''Gary''.
