More oh-eight: Nunn back in the news

Posted: Monday, August 20, 2007 9:03 AM by Domenico Montanaro

If they build it, the candidates will come, right? That was the claim by the founders of Unity '08, the group trying to recruit a bipartisan presidential ticket. Well, the first major elder statesman outside of New York City has acknowledged his interest: former Georgia Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn. But if he runs, he'll do so as an independent. "It's a possibility, not a probability," said Nunn, now the head of a nonprofit organization out to reduce the threat posed by nuclear, biological and chemical weaponry. "My own thinking is, it may be a time for the country to say, 'Timeout. The two-party system has served us well, historically, but it's not serving us now.'"

Nunn said he's not likely to make up his mind until next year, probably after the early rush of presidential primaries have produced de facto nominees for both parties. He said the decision will depend largely on what he hears from the current candidates. The only certainty, he said, is that he won't be anybody's candidate for vice president."

Nunn said he's tempted by running because it would be an opportunity to push his pet issue. "Ultimately, he said, if there's to be any chance of persuading smaller countries to give up nuclear weapons technology — and keep it out of the hands of increasingly sophisticated terrorists — world powers will have to put themselves on a gradual, verifiable path toward total nuclear disarmament. That includes the United States."

New Hampshire's Secretary of State Bill Gardner confirmed to the Union Leader that if Michigan does move its primary to Jan. 15 (as negotiated late last week), then New Hampshire’s primary has to be no later than Jan. 8 -- if the state abides by its law."

Nunn is a legend.  but, being away for so long I wonder if he will be able to capture an public that has clearly moved on from the days when Nunn was a major force.
I have good memories of the man as he was one of the most important voices, along with my old senator, Paul Simon, in the senate.
I remember a time when a Nunn and Simon ticket was the dream.
Sam Nunn---the Hillary Clinton of third party candidates.  No record to run on, went and looked up his senate record.  Gays won't like him, abortion people don't have anything to argue with.  Did nothing in his Senate record, almost as bad as Hillary.  Nope Sam, just stay in retirement.
Finally, an adult is thinking of running for the Democrats.  The current set of candidates will be punched out from all these goofy debates they've been having, and Nunn will swoop in and grab the nomination.  Nunn is a candidate the Rupublicans will fear, Rove won't be calling this guy a loser.  Nunn is a leader, and a centrist, someone who a lot of people in this country can rally around.  He's also a true southerner, unlike any of the current Democratic candidates, who will be able to capture one or two red states.
nunn is a has been, thats how many states he will get "nunn"
I predicted that the super early primaries would encourage third party candidates.

Jerry - Gettin' ready for Dean? I hope you and yours are safe. Be careful.
Independent---Wish I was in the lumber business, I would be a millionaire by now.  I'm waiting for the storm to get into the bay of Campeche and see which way it turns before I make a decision.  When Rita was heading to Corpus and everyone was flooding the freeway out to San Antonio, I stayed because I saw where the storm was going to turn to the right and head up into Houston and Beaumont and Louisiana.  Called that one right on the number.  Looks like this one will go into Mexico and we get another rain storm out of it.  Tropical Storm Erin gave me 1/2" of rain and a good day to BBQ here.  I can be packed and gone in three hours, so there is no panic on my part.  Thanks for asking.
Sam Nunn was a Senator in the old Richard Russell Georgia tradition.  Like Russell, he was for a strong, bipartisan defense policy and military.  He also was not a fan of big, liberal government while he held the Senate seat (in fact, on socioeconomic issues he often voted more with Republicans).

He has been out of government for quite a while, though, and it is unclear how much his views have evolved in that time.  If he maintains the same political views he held while in the Senate, he might indeed be a formidable candidate, but, until I know a lot more about where he is on today's issues, I can't commit to him as even a potential candidate.

I would like to hear more from the Senator, though, just as I'd like to hear more from Sen.Thompson and some of the second-tier candidates in both parties--Clinton, Obama, Edwards, Giuliani, Romney and McCain are sucking up too much of the air at this point.
I was a big Sam Nunn fan until that ludicrous scene of him trapsing around a submarine with a microphone interviewing soldiers about "don't ask don't tell". It was like an episode of Geraldo only this was a US Senator.

Hes a dinosaur. Let him fossilize in peace.
Senator Nunn would be a great choice compared to the current crop of candidates.  I think he would appeal to democrats, republicans and independents.  We need new ideas and someone who will get things done.  He was a very good senator.
Sam Nunn: the REAL Democrat, a REAL American, from the Truman/Stevenson/Humphrey/ wing of the party, where I used to reside.

Got my vote if he runs.
Sam Nunn is a crediable voice on defense issues.  He was the real force behind the Goldwaters Nichols Act that dictates how our military is organized and fights jointly today.  Too bad, he is indicating he won't run as a Democrat.  The Democrats (and the people who give money to them) need to pay attention to members of their party who are more moderate like Nunn or else they doom themselves to never winning any red states and the electorial votes needed for the White House.
Sam Nunn would not be as good a candidate as former Sen. George Mitchell, who has been much more active after his retirement from the Senate.  Just look at, for example, his work on the issue of Northern Ireland.  If nothing else, I'd much rather see George Mitchell working on Mideast peace than former British PM Tony Blair!
You guys are pretty much all underestimating the power of a "viable" third party candidacy. I think the Center would love a chance to bend over Dems and Repubs and make them both squeal.
Unity08 was made for someone like Sam Nunn to run for President.  All that's needed is a similarly centrist and reform minded Veep.
