Anatomy of a controversy

On his site now, Drudge has this provocative headline: "Obama Wife Slams Hillary?" It's taken from this Chicago Sun-Times story today. "At another stop, in Atlantic, Michelle said she travels with her husband in part 'to model what it means to have family values,' adding 'if you can't run your own house, you can't run the White House.' She didn't elaborate, but it could be interpreted as a swipe at the Clintons."

So, the story seems to have it all -- a reference to the Clinton's marital problems, more Obama vs. Clinton, etc. There's just one problem: This all seems to be a manufactured controversy. For one thing, what Michelle Obama said isn't anything new; in fact, it appears to be her stump speech. She said this on August 13, per the AP. And also on August 16, per the New York Times. In both instances, it appears she's talking about her own family and its values.

In a just-concluded conference call, Obama responded to the suggestion that his wife was slamming the Clintons. "She wasn't making any reference to that," he said. "If anybody who's been listening to Michelle on the stump, she's talked about the importance of family, and the need for our family to make sure that we're thinking about our kids during the process of this campaign. And she's repeated that in every stump speech. So, you know, there are no references beyond her point that we've had an administration that talks a lot about family values, but doesn't follow through on it, and part of the challenge for us in this campaign is making sure that we are talking the talk but also walking the walk. That's all it was referring to, and as I said, that's been a standard aspect of her speech for a long time.

In short, this appears to be a Drudge straw man; the challenge for news divisions (including our own) is whether they actually bite.

I am sure she probably didn't mean it that way...but it doesn't make it not true.

For the record where has Bush (the present admin )not "walked the walk" on family values? Maybe thats refering to not suporting entitlements?
Oh that evil Drudge. Kudos on not "biting" on this one. Save all that biting for stories from the NYT where the headlines doesn't really match the story, and then that ends up on the nightly news, Olberman, or Mathews. Of course all those stories are directed at Republicans.
well, you already bit. too bad for the rest of us that major news organization are reporting on what a conservative blog has to say about the democratic primary.
Political maneuvering: Drag down Michelle to blunt her passionate appeal and conviction about her and her family.
lets think Okc- possibly getting drunk and high on cocaine while you have young children and wife at home. Not really sure how that screams "family values"
Full context of Michelle Obama's statement.

It's a good to see First Read call out Drudge's lies.
Maybe rudy knows who she is referring to.
Jennie...once again YOU show your ignorance, like on the other post when you said he din't go to Iraq.

he admits to that when he was in his teens or early twentys.  He did not meet Micheele until much later.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.  Other than having "you" do you know what "your cousins" were doing in their youth.  LOL
Let's Think,

Make sure you don't use any social security or medicare if and when you ever need it.  Just send those checks back to the government because no one likes entitlement programs.  Better yet, I'll take them.
I'm always amazed that the term 'entilement programs'.  So after years of paying social security and medicare taxes, one should got get checks when due?
Thanks firstread for defending the obama campaign.. you're doing your job well!
typical lying republican smear machine. I can't wait til the Clintons go after the repubs-they will chew them to pieces.
Jenna bush is pregnant
Hey "let's think Okc"-- the only "values" George W. Bush has brought the nation's children are Greed, Entitlement, and Capitalism.  By holding no one accountable, Bush also teaches our children that competence and integrity are meaningless.  His failed Iraq War has also destroyed many brave American families for life.

I would be thrilled to have a President that actually taught our children to respect for one another and work hard.

Thanks for having the guts to call this one out, FirstRead.  Drudge is trying pretty hard on this one.

Thank you First Read....
Anything BUT ISSUES....
Just the horse race, just gossip
(has Paris Hilton endorsed anybody?)

It is a good point, anyway.
Do we need another 4 years of the dysfunctional Clinton family circus ?
Has Bill reformed ? Has he found Jesus ?
Where's Lorena Bobbit when you need her ?
It looks like all the neo-cons in the forum are alittle annoyed that Drudge's latest peice of yellow journalism didn't get repeated without being critically examined. And when neo-cons and kool aide drinkers are annoyed it probably is a sign that you're doing real journalism.  Good job First Read team on analyzing the story instead of just being an echo chamber for the right wing noise machine.
If I live to a hundred there is no way I will recieve what I have paid and what that money would earned in private investments. We as a country rely too much on government. Its our job to support ourselves and our families. There are no doubt times where the govt. could and should help, but there should be stringent regulations. I think that what was to be a saftey net turned out to be percieved as a way of life. That needs to change, people need to prepare for retirement. Our country cannot continue this way. We both know the shape that SS and medicare are in. Now we want socialized health care. If so many are uninsured and cant get med. care why do you hear how much money is lost by treating illegal aliens? There is an answer but throwing money at everything is not the answer. We can and should be able to do better than that.
Sierra is really Jerry, pretending to be a woman.
Sierra is a married male.
Sierra - Bush reformed and found Jesus.  Look where that got us.
MSNBC commenting about Drudge.  Gee, I wonder which way that message is going to go?  Also, you msnbc guys got guts calling yourself a "news division".
ONce again , the obama campaign says something nasty, then denies it. Is Rove working for obama now?

The other spin would be that obama is so henpecked, his wife sets his whole agenda
sierra, I dont think you are who you say you are. AND youre certainly not from California. bb is right, sierra is jerry.
lets think, before we all go sounding off about SS, we all need to remember it if first an INSURANCE program, not a retirement program.  That is insurance even for you "lets think." Second, like most insurances, you are buying protection against calamities that could occur now, not when you retire.  Does your term insurance policy return your paid premium if nothing happens to require you to exercise the policy?
Am I the only one who remembers Sierra, San Fransico, is a man?
Congrats on MSNBC for not talking Drudge at face value....but watch Foxnews run a report this evening.
Congrads MSNBC, we are finally getting the major news media to call out those who are placing manufactured issues into the news stream.  Too bad, the same was not being done with the swiftees.  Again, thank you for calling on Drudge to clean up his act.  Now let us do the same for Ann Coulter.
Oh! No!
It's the Clinton 'Army of Darkness' !!
They're here to enlighten !!

It gets tough, defending the Clintons, doesn't it ??
Give me a break! Neither Michelle Obama nor her handlers are that naive or stupid. She knew precisely what she was saying, what she meant to say, and how it would be taken. It shows that Obama is perfectly willing to take the low road when it suits him, AND, that he's willing to let his wife do his dirty work for him.
OKc how about covering up for the pedophile Foley?
Cd- I posted a link with a story that he DID go to Iraq, refuting someone else's claim that he hadn't. And that he didn't meet Michelle until much later, when he had already experimented with all of that is exactly my point. He didn't leave his wife and kids to get high, he got it out of his system before having any real responsibilities- George Bush chose the fast life over his family.
Sierra, I didn't know Jesus was lost. Why do you need Lorena Bobbit? I am very confused.
Drudge probably got a fundraising mailer from Clinton asking for money to combat the vast conspiracy of opponent spouses.
Tuck...no he is still working for Hillary.

BTW you would only think it is "nasty" if there was some truth to it !!!   To close to home?  Hmmm !!!
This is why Drudge is a Repub. Repubs are always deceitful, lying dissemblers. Their motivation is never to educate or find the truth. It’s always to muddle, confuse and manufacture lies. Drudge can’t even be honest with himself about who he is.
Unfortunately, some news divisions did bite.  I was over at ABC and found the disturbing headline. Are the journalist on the campaign trail so long that they lose the ability to reason.  I know it is a lot to ask, but please just use some common sense.  I put a lot of time and energy in seeking out the real news so I can make informed decisions.  Sen. and Mrs. Obama are adults with a great deal of courage and integrity.  Thus far their comments, opinions, positions and solutions for our country have been thoughtful and direct.  Further, they stand by everything they say even in the face of adversity.
Amy, I just said that Sierra was a man. At 2:01
Drudge Is Karl Rove's lover.  They are both still in the closet.  Well, I can't remember, maybe only Karl Rove is still in the closet
Thanks for the link Henry L.- you should all consider reading the full statement, it becomes very obvious that there this was not an attack on the Clintons, but simply an explanation of how Michelle balancing her family life. The fact that so many people jumped to that conclution should be thought of as evidence that the Clinton family scandals are still fresh in everyone's minds. A little hypersensitive.
Jennie...my apologies on reread you were correct I confused you with bionoicWoman.

My apologies, again.

Oh, you're right Ollie. Glad you and me are on top of this.
"If I live to a hundred there is no way I will recieve what I have paid and what that money would earned in private investments"

Lets think is obviously NOT THINKING HERE. Investing is NOT A GUARANTEE. Exactly how much would you have now if you had invested 100,000 dollars in Enron and another 100K in WolrdComm???
CC in Philly "This is why Drudge is a Repub. Repubs are always deceitful, lying dissemblers."

Bill Clinton is a Republican?
MSNBC is way out ahead on this issue. I was just on CNN, and the headline changed in front of my eyes, from "Obama's Wife takes Swipe at Hillary" to "Obama Denies his Wife took a Swipe at Hillary." Because I visit First Read I knew the back story. It just goes to show CNN is a rinky dink outfit compared to MSNBC.
Leon Miller you are exactly the type of person who drinks whatever koolaid phoney news feeds you...this is why it is important to call out "news" that isn't news. Just because it is in print doesn't mean it's real. And Sierra...yea you are Jerry..or a close approximation.
ABC news actually reported on the Obama's response to the Drudge report false claim so they did not lift it directly from that site. Still it's a shame that website has become a GOP rumor mill that has the ablility to drop such false items.
Jeannie - Perhaps because everyone is used to people jumping to conclusions when it is Hillary or Edwards or another candidate who is speaking?

And Sierra - it's not difficult to defend Hillary at all.  In the infamous words of our president, bring it on.
Jerry and Sierra are one in the same.
Didn't Chicago Sun-Time report it first?  Sun-Times is a Clinton supporter and usually bash Obama.  I think they did it first then Drudge ran with it. Tut tut.  I wouldn't be surprised if it's not a Clinton's doing to set up the Obamas.
