Anatomy of a controversy

On his site now, Drudge has this provocative headline: "Obama Wife Slams Hillary?" It's taken from this Chicago Sun-Times story today. "At another stop, in Atlantic, Michelle said she travels with her husband in part 'to model what it means to have family values,' adding 'if you can't run your own house, you can't run the White House.' She didn't elaborate, but it could be interpreted as a swipe at the Clintons."

So, the story seems to have it all -- a reference to the Clinton's marital problems, more Obama vs. Clinton, etc. There's just one problem: This all seems to be a manufactured controversy. For one thing, what Michelle Obama said isn't anything new; in fact, it appears to be her stump speech. She said this on August 13, per the AP. And also on August 16, per the New York Times. In both instances, it appears she's talking about her own family and its values.

In a just-concluded conference call, Obama responded to the suggestion that his wife was slamming the Clintons. "She wasn't making any reference to that," he said. "If anybody who's been listening to Michelle on the stump, she's talked about the importance of family, and the need for our family to make sure that we're thinking about our kids during the process of this campaign. And she's repeated that in every stump speech. So, you know, there are no references beyond her point that we've had an administration that talks a lot about family values, but doesn't follow through on it, and part of the challenge for us in this campaign is making sure that we are talking the talk but also walking the walk. That's all it was referring to, and as I said, that's been a standard aspect of her speech for a long time.

In short, this appears to be a Drudge straw man; the challenge for news divisions (including our own) is whether they actually bite.

Amy --> "It just goes to show CNN is a rinky dink outfit compared to MSNBC."

And that's saying something.  To be behind MSNBC, CNN would have to have hampsters running in their exercise wheels to power the lights!
Republican Foreverclueless -- if A implies B that does not mean that B implies A.  It is called logic; I learned it in High School. Try it sometime.
CNN, Chicago Sun-Times, ABC -- please, please stop hurting America.
It was a slam at the Clintons.  Now, obama wants to back peddle once again and pretend she meant something else. Mr and Mrs obama know full well what they are saying.  Their handlers see to that.
Btw, Drudge is good reading.
nuanced - We've all seen your logic here, and I think we can all agree, it is at the high school level.
I have to say that I was surprised to see Chuck Todd on Hardball this evening talking about this story with much less candor and attention to facts than he put in writing. A little consistency would be nice.
Michelle Obama has used that line in several of her speeches, referring to family values and her philosophy on managing her family. Anyone who has seen her on CSPAN would know that. Why is the Chicago-Sun Times fabricating a controversy?
Talk about dishonest journalism. Sadly, many media outlets have just run with this story and are claiming she attacked Hillary. Why don't these media outlets take a few minutes to research whether Michelle did attack Hillary or whether she was talking about something else? Our media is just looking to create a fight where there is none...much to the detriment of the American public which deserves just the facts and not this BS.
You can bet that the Clinton slime machine is in full effect. They want to take the attention off their candidates' record. Cocopuffs fall in line everytime the clintons fabricate controversy. They fail to realize that this is the peoples movement and we will not yeild. We're going to take our government back from these crooks and cronies.

Obama 08!
Do we really want an angry women that speaks out because she thinks her husband is too weak to do it.  I wish we heard more from Barack and less from his wife.  Or did he not get permision from her to speak.

dito to Liz Edwards too.

Hillary speaks for herself - The guys need to grow some B--- and do thier own dirty work.
Gee, I wonder who First Read is pushing for the Democratic nomination?

Michelle says something which is susceptible to the interpretation The Drudge gave it, yet now Obama can claim innocence.  Maybe true , maybe not but still cuts too close to the bone.

At the same time, without any real critical review, First Read declares that Clinton says the surge is working, which is far from what she actually said.  Clearly her comments were selectively and deliberately taken out of context.  She actually said there was limited progress but overall clearly implied a military solution would not work.   Pretty much said what Obama and other  Dems said, even Edwards.

Then no apology, no retraction, just a muddled clarification, still without a full text explanation of what Clinton actually said.  That was the least First Read could have done.

Leave it to the brain dead to only read the headline or limited quotes and gleefully leap at the interpretation that is nearest and dearest to a Hillary Haters heart(less).
