Romney, Thompson’s shots at Giuliani

Posted: Tuesday, August 21, 2007 1:00 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

We mentioned earlier that Romney is running a radio ad hitting Giuliani on immigration. Well, it seems Romney isn’t the only one going after the former New York City mayor.

NBC’s Joel Seidman reports: In his latest "Fred file" blog today, candidate-in-waiting, Fred Thompson, takes aim at Giuliani and his war on gun makers, back when Giuliani was mayor.

Thompson laments, "Unfortunately, New York is trying, again, to force its ways on the rest of us.”

The former Tennessee senator tries to shoot down an "activist federal judge from Brooklyn," who he says, "provided Mayor Giuliani's administration with the legal ruling it sought to sue gun makers."

The judge, Thompson says, "created a bizarre justification to allow New York City to sue out-of-state gun stores that sold guns that somehow ended up in criminal hands in the Big Apple."

Thompson again harped on an old conservative theme -- runaway government. "The lawsuit has been a lesson in out-of-control government from the get-go,” Thompson writes. “Mayor Bloomberg sent private investigators to make ‘straw’ purchases -- illegally buying guns for somebody else. According to the ATF, NY's illegal ‘stings’ interfered with ongoing investigations of real gun traffickers."

**** UPDATE **** A Giuliani aide tells First Read in response: “Clearly they're attacking Mayor Giuliani because he's the front-runner. The news here is the first 527 attack is from Fred Thompson and not George Soros, and Governor Romney's ad conveniently forgets that his trooper plan that never took effect did absolutely nothing to cut down on the number of illegals working in his yard."

Jesus, Freddy: That's the ONLY THING RUDY'S EVER DONE RIGHT !!

and you want to criticize hm for it ?
Why don't you criticize Rudy for leaving his wife ??
For not living up to 'Republican family values' ?
(oh yeah, right)

I'm too sexy for my shirt
so sexy that it hurts
so, so,  so SEXY
Thompson is sounding more presidential all the time. He is on the mark with this one!
Hmm let me see, should I vote for the crossdresser or the Mormon? Transvestite or the guy in a cult who pretends to be Christian? Ahhhh, gee I can't make up my mind. Wheres that Thompson guy, ahh not on the ballot. Hmm maybe Hillary, I've heard of secret insider information that shes just like Bush... well I still like Bush sort of so I'll vote for Hillary. Hmm, Rove told me not to vote for her so that is secret code... which I think means vote for Hillary. Whew! that was tough!
If I were a repub, I would be so disappionted in the choices to vote for, I would probably just give up. Know wonder the misinformed repubs on here are so bitter and angry and scared. I can't wait for Hillary, Edwards, or Obama to be president. Some of these repubs will have to be put on medication, but at least the country will start fairing better.
I have heard talk that Thompson may be delaying his announcement because he doesn't want to undergo the scrutiny the other candidates are experiencing currently, at least not for as long.  This might be wise, given that he seems to be quite conservative.  That may serve him well in the primaries, but I can't see America electing someone who is really conservative to office.  A moderate Republican, perhaps, but not someone who is very right wing.

Of course, I don't know that much about his actual positions because I don't follow him - since he is not an official candidate yet...which I happen to think is pretty silly.  How many more months is he going to play this "will he or won't he?" game?
" The Guns of Navarone"-novel by Alistair Maclean, also movie, song, etc...
[[Thompson laments, "Unfortunately, New York is trying, again, to force its ways on the rest of us.”]]

Yeah, we've got to vote for Freddie so he can help the poor oppressed gun lobby make an honest living from gun sales to criminals.  Cretins like Thompson actually make Giulliani look halfway human.
Dumb, dumber, dumbest.Romney, Thompson, Guliani
Welcome all new legal immigrants!

Illegal immigrants-- I admire your courage, and if you learn English, keep all other laws and lay low you probably won't be shipped back home.  Problem is, citizens of the United States don't trust you as a group.  Some of you have given us reasons not to trust you, some but not most.  But ALL of you illegal immigrants have broken our laws by being here.

To the illegal immigrants who have decided to stay here, get in our face, demonstrate in the streets and demand we accept you as legal I have somehing to say: you have defined yourself as not just illegal, but an enemy.  You've got to be sent home ignominiously and immediatley.  Come here flaunt our laws and then tell us which laws you are and are not going to keep, and then demand that we accept you?  No way in hell. Shut up and go home.
if other states had decent laws, New Yorkers wouldnt feel burdened to protect the streets from the inflow of illegal guns sold.  Lets compare and contrast NY and any city in tennessee.  NY has lower crime, and higher income.  Its about time we got rid of backward thinkers in the white house and let a big city pragmatist run things.
Sierra,  Please do not use the Lord's name in vain. Especially when talking about politics
Thompson is correct Giuliani might have been good for New York, but not for the rest of the country.
To Carrie, Others...

Thompson is nowhere near conservative. He plays conservative sounding characters on TV, but that's just his shtik.

If you are a real conservative, avoid him.

If you're a neocon, he's right up your alley. Full fledged member of the CFR, as are Rudy and Hillary.

They'll all sell the country down the river.
Thompson, what a cheesy coward. He opens his mouth to speak but nothing comes out. Bush (Rove Cheney PNAC) has wrecked to GOP.
Well- To paraphrase, "Spinal Tap"'s manager,

"No big deal, New York isn't a big electoral vote state."

Freddie's (politically) dead, that's what I said...

Van
Get out the boxing gloves
republicans eating thier own ,PRICELESS.I think they see they have to win the nomination before they start attacking thier fellow countrymen and women, democrats.Repubs will see what the reap from Karlm Roves slash and burn politics,it hurts it hurts, that is no way for people to run a goverment for some people by some people leave out half the people
I'm no Rude-y supporter, but I agree with Lou that this country needs a NYr back in the white house and not another dixie-land bible beater.
Someone needs to ask Rudy when he was the head of the SEC , why did he let Mike Milken get off with less than two years of jail time and keep a billion dollars of stolen money . Milken got my childrens college money and his children got five hundred million dollars put in a trust . [source: the book Den of thieves] Does this sound like someone who is taking care of the public. Rudy , give it up . Milken owes you something go collect it , we don't need you taking care of the taxpayers .
keith ask the american Indian which laws your illigal immigrant ancestors broke when they showed up and stole the indians land,be grateful and genorous not hateful and stingy. This country is built on the bodies of illigals when did you think slavery became a legal way to help people come here, wrong, because the powers that be said so,wrong rejoice that people still love the idea this country is known for ,freedom ,still resonates around the world.I bet you dont mind war criminals like wernar whats his name the german father of our space program ,how was he able to immigrate here, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Yeah, Rudy got crime off the streets of New York and put him in as police commissioner.  Romney was an alien in Massachusetts from Utah.  I wonder if Fred is the only politician his lobbyist wife has been in bed with? SOS
Question where were you during the war daddy fred?anybody know his war record .
This is gonna get good. 3 godawful (sorry terry cc) candidates nipping at each other's heels. Soon to be at each other's throats. The GOP is toast at all levels next year.
Ken - you are so right.  Let all of the illegals in to the country.  We need the cheap, some would call it free, labor.  If some terrorists get in with the bunch, well, we'll just have to deal with it I guess.  How many buildings you think will fall over this time?  Two? Six? Ten?  Buildings are cheap, besides, got the cheap labor right here to rebuild them.  We'll just call it 'Urban Renewal' so the locals don't get too bent out of shape.

Ken, this country needs big picture thinkers like you.  We are happy you are one of us.  Wish I could slap you on the back and buy you a big ceeegar.
check your facts the terrorist didnt come from mexico ,ass. They had visas given out by your goverment to the saudi allies of bush, aahh maybe you thought they came from Iran.Go back to the country you came from and quit trying to close the door on the rest of the world.Did the first custom agent have a headress and ask the settlelers for thier papers, enjoy the country you  and your ancestors stole from the american indian and get of of the mexicans back or did you forget you stole thier land in texas too.
haliburton tried the cheap illigal help to rebuild NEW ORLEANS it worked great, how many terrorists did that take anyway the destruction of the city.Dont worry we pitched together and now look at it threw your rose colored glasses .A shinny city on the hill?
-"I wonder if Fred is the only politician his lobbyist wife has been in bed with? SOS"

That's real classy.

"Question where were you during the war daddy fred?anybody know his war record"

-Thompson was already out of school with three children to support by that time.
Van Man! We need your help! What is Thompsons record concerning the war. He shoulda been there. And whats the story on his current wife?
Thompson was born in 42'. The only war he could have participated in was Vietnam, but he was a student during the war and probably had a deferment. So we should cut him a break on this one.
you bet all these questions and answers are very, very important. repubs running for office better stop whining like Mr. "keep my family out of it" Guliani.they better be ready for intense scrutiny. I want to know about thompsons war record and his slutty wife too.maybe thats why this farty old man hasn't jumped in the race yet.
Kenn - "a shinny city on the hill"?  New Orleans?  Eh, Kenn, the place is kind of in a valley (actually a big old hole), but I guess we need not quibble over details.  Yes sir, lets get more of the illegals in their to rebuild good old New Orleans!  Problem is, $150 billion just doesn't buy as much as you would think.  Looks like we'll come up a little short on all the rebuilding, so we'll have to prioritize a tad.  Kenn, what do you think, skimp a little on the levees?  I mean, how often is a blow like Katrina going to show up?  20-30 years or so, probably more?  Be someones elses problem by the time it happens, right?

You'd be a grat operations guy there Kenn!  Sure would get those illegals working hard!
Max Zell read all of KENN'S post with tongue in cheek, I dare not say sarcasm.  He is not what he seems at first read:)
Go ahead, go back and read all post by Kenn, you will be informed and amused.
Fred is dead, dead, dead.
thank you for understanding humor .we could use a little with all the hate thats goiung on.I choose to look at life as if it is not in my control. I find it f=unny that people like bush think they can control world events .They like to feel more important than the little people they need to show the way.Us little people have no defense agaist the powers that be so take it with a grain of sand because life is like holding sand it slowly slips through our fingers .Enjoy the debate have fun dont worry about what you cant control, but never stop pointing out lifes oppisites and love that fact we aredifferent with differing ideas ,not everyone takes it as serious as you.SORRY for the confusion.PS the shiney city reference was reagan quote.
Fred's going to end up a total fad.  Fad Thompson, in fact has a nice ring to it.  Look, he's waited way too long to be a man and throw his hat into the ring.  Instead of making a committment and subjecting himself to being scrutinized and dissected like all the other candidates, he's continually straddling the fence between which of Sean Hannity's shows he's going to "test the waters" at this week.  This prolonged tease of his non-candidate candidacy makes him look not only as lazy as he's described, but an indecisive procrastinator also, which is not a good trait to have ever, especially when you're non-seeking seeking the highest office in the land.

While Fred will end up a fad, Rudy's potential pitfall is that he could fade.  His support is arguably just sort of maintaining itself, directionless, while Fred's had peaked and pulled back several percentage points.  Meanwhile Mitt Romney's support looks slow and steady.  I think Romney has the most potential to collect genuine support that will continue to grow as people get to know him.  Critics have tried to liken him to John Kerry for flipflopping, namely on abortion, but simple due diligence into this shows that's simply not the case, moreover the issues stated are all ones of social conservatism, an entire topic he's easily to the right of the other Republicans on anyway.   Couple this with his private and public record of improved efficiency, he seems easily like the best guy for the job of fixing all the problems in Washington, regardless of Party, because he has, in my opinion, improvement as the fuel behind his ambition, rather than power, which I think is the sole driving force behind people like Rudy and Hillary.

So my prediction will be Romney taking the Republican nomination, Hillary the Democrat nom...obviously.  And we'll see Mitt be able to out-triangulate the Clintons by employing similar tactics as Sarkozy just did in France (as a Partymate of Chirac who won the election as the candidate for change) partly b/c as 2008 gets here we will have had 20 years of the same 2 families running the country, and will people want to re-up to make that 24 & 28?  Besides, be it Romney or Rudy, either one of them would own Hillary in the head to head debates.
oops----Romney coming in third in MI---Hillary beats all other candidates-------Romney getting all the neo cash
To carry the mid-west and the west, Giuliani cannot be pro-gun control.
In many areas we use guns to protect our property and as everyday tools in the outdoors. Lots of city folk have no idea how to live 1,2 or even 10 miles from the nearest neighbor. There is also the growing culture of women owning guns. Today one in every three women own a gun for personal protection. Yeah. go ahead and tell them the law will protect them when you take their guns away. LOL Giuliani hasn't got a prayer in winning the general and I believe that Fred is on the right track in opposing gun control both from a political stance and as a constitutional right. Oh and since guns were outlawed in NYC, crime rates usung guns have quadrupled. Sane thing happened in Australia and Great Britian  in recent years.
Go Fred Go!
