The Iraq spin zone

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
A $25 million spin campaign is on to win the public relations battle ahead of the mid-September Iraq progress report. Two groups on opposite sides of the ideological debate on whether or not to withdraw troops from Iraq have launched a massive television campaign to frame the debate.

Freedom’s Watch, with whom former Bush White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer is working, today launched $15 million worth of ads with anecdotal accounts of injured veterans and families of those who have lost relatives who advocate for staying in Iraq.

The ads are largely in response to $10 million worth of ads already running, which are paid for by Americans Against Escalation in Iraq, a coalition of groups that want troops to begin to be withdrawn from Iraq.

Freedom’s Watch’s new ads will run in more than 20 congressional districts and urge viewers to call an 800-number to tell their representatives “not to surrender to terror,” according to a Freedom’s Watch press release.

“The mission of Freedom’s Watch is to ensure a strong national defense and a powerful effort to confront and defeat global terror, especially in Iraq,” Bradley A. Blakeman, President of Freedom’s Watch, said in a statement. “Those who want to quit while victory is possible have dominated the public debate about terror and Iraq since the 2004 election. Freedom’s Watch is going to change that.”

Here are links to four of Freedom’s Watch ads, “Veteran,” “Travis,” “Robinson” and “Jesse.” The last line from “Jesse,” spoken by a family member of a soldier who died in Iraq, is: “We already had one 9/11, we don’t need another.”

Stay in Iraq? For what? These folks that are dragging this out are doing this to save Bushs legacy-and thats the ONLY reason.God is watching all.Shame on them.
They could spend 25 BILLION and it wouldn't convince anyone that we should continue this debacle.

Why are we there?
What will it cost?
What will we gain?
Where is the perpetrator of 9/11?
Define Victory?
Why should we allow the architects of a failed policy to spend more lives and money to try and validate their failure of imagination and leadership?

is this the same ari that lied when he was the press secretary asnd told the press to shut up?He needs to take his own advice---traitor to the country
spinning like a top, whirling and whirling alwasy swirling ,say it again what next the surge worked what next lets call it a day and head home.....hmmmm is that what bush is thinking like nixon a secret plan for peace which I think involved an illegal excursion into cambodia could he be heading for Iran, southeast asia isnt what you compare to because if we didnt kill the people of vietnam we would have more to trade with 30 years later when we sailed a ship peacefully into the harbour that Johnson ,President to those who are historicly challenged, fabricated the beginning of the police action.
The word "Freedom" as invoked by the Bush regime for all their nasty, underhanded, cowardly tactics is such a contradiction in thought and meaning. Where is the freedom for our military that has been redeployed 2,3, and 4 times or more to a BS war? Where is the "freedom" for the families that have lost their loved ones or will have to support one who is horribly disfigured and/or disabled? Where is the "freedom" for any Iraqi that doesn't subscribe to the jihad of the insurgents or al-Queda? Where is the "freedom" in America where the justice department has been so fatally biased? Where are the "freedoms" granted by the Constitution to all the citizens of America that this regime has trampled on again and again. When I see the word "Freedom" labelled to anything anymore, I can almost bet it's another con being pushed by the most "un-American-pro-American" regime in the country - that of the Bush administration.
nothing good can come out of iraq, just more teenage  bodies
'Lie to me and tell me everything is all right'
JONNY LANG "Lie To Me"

with apologies to Still Crazy
Bush says history will show that the war was worth it...yea...worth it for who? Halliburton execs.
this is so easy to participate in---I will stand with the families that have lost their loved ones to George Bushs illegal war. They are angry and justified for being so.Since when has ari been credited for being fair about anything ---just another Bush suckup
So Ari is going out to continue brainwashing the base about how we are "winning" in Iraq. The more we "win" the worse it gets.
Just more "Stay the Course", "We'll be greeted as liberators", "The insurgency is in it's last throes", "We're making great proogress" LIES!
Just more "Stay the Course", "We'll be greeted as liberators", "The insurgency is in it's last throes", "We're making great proogress" LIES!
Talk about increasing our deficit....NINE BILLION DOLLARS A MONTH TO BE IN IRAQ. an IRAQI GOVERMENT THAT WILL "NOT" WORK. RIGHT NOW ON VACATION. YES...VACATION ! 9 BILLION DOLLARS A MONTH.
Its just continuation of the lying right wing rhetoric, so republicans can save face. Its all about winning to them, nothing else matters. These are very sick, pathetic people.
Amen to the four ads
Bush and company will put on the biggest pro Iraq propaganda campaign before the progress reports come out in September in order to sway the American public opinion once again. Look at the facts, not the dishonest rhetoric put out by the white house!!!
I hope that someone does some reporting on where all of this money is coming from....Haliburton?
"Domestic use of spy satellites to widen"
8/16/07 Washington Post
"Law enforcement getting new access to secret imagery
The Bush administration has approved a plan to expand domestic access to some of the most powerful tools of 21st-century spycraft, giving law enforcement officials and others the ability to view data obtained from satellite and aircraft sensors that can see through cloud cover and even penetrate buildings and underground bunkers".

AND THEY CAN'T FIND OSAMA BIN-LADEN???????  LOOK OUT AMERICA!!!!
They can spin all they want. Since they (the White House) has no credibility, the american people aren't buying it ... nine billion dollars a month and more than 3700 dead americans ..its time to come home and let the Iraqi government come back from their month long vacation and deal with their own freakin problems.
if the NEWS media were doing its job, there would be no traction for competing spins--we would know what was going on in iraq, because we would know what the troops were doing, what the iraqis were doing, and how life is going for the residents of that wretched country.
VEERRY SICK PATHETIC MAN OUR PRESIDENT
History will show the war is/was worth it.  A change in political direction in the Middle East is what was required.  Signing treaties in the White House Rose Garden just wasn't getting the job done.
Hey Ricardo, Don't forget the month long United States Congress vacation as well? Lets not forget the midnight pay raises and special benefits Congress gives themselves. Hummm..Maybe these are just some of the reasons why Congress has such a high approval rating!  (LOL)
it's nice to know that democrats gave President Bush permission to go to war.
"No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."  Their millions will no doubt reap lots of support among the sheep in the Heartland and the proles in the cities.
But what does it say about how scared they are aobut what Petraeus might say, or Congress might ask, when the two meet next month?
so who's paying for this $15 million dollars woth of ads? does this $15 million get added into the total cost of the war?
Once again history repeats it's mistakes in a no win-situation... apparently Bush's observation on the Vietman War withdrawal and the rest of the world's is opposing to say the least. There are so many similarites between this War and the Vietnam's it's surreal. China is dependant today on Iran's oil deal of 70 billion dollars, Russia is against our foreign policy in the Middle East, in the beginning the Afganistan War involved Russia and the Afghanistan backed US fighters as opposing enemies like the South and North Vietnam's opposition to each other. We invaded Iran also as Bush explains to "free the people" as in Vietnam and secure a democractic-Vietnam or as today in Iraq for the same ideological reasons. North Vietnam and the communist party invaded South Vietnam (a regime) we supported much like today as in the 1990 feudal tribal wars of Afghanistan we created. Bush you really need to brush up on your history and get the facts quick before more American lives are lost.   http://americanhistory.about.com/od/vietnam/Vietnam_War.htm.
End this madness in the mid-east. Vote for Ron Paul in 2008. Freedom Peace Properity.

It's not about winning, people. That is just a cover. It's about $money$. If the US is spending $9 Billion a month, how much is flowing to the corrupt contractors building collapsible infrastructure in Iraq?
So do all of you who OPPOSE the U.S. being in Iraq really think that when we leave, those who are causing all the problems will just say something like, "Oh, good.  We got them out. We will call all of our Muslim supporters home, from all over the globe, and we will no longer bomb anyone."  You are deceiving yourselves!  WE are the reason the U.S. is not over-run with militants!  What's wrong with you people, anyway?  And by the way, my husband and I are Vietnam vets, and our 20-year-old son is currently serving in Iraq.  God bless Freedom and those who have the GUTS to fight for it!
Who are all of the members of this organization and WHERE is the 15 million coming from.  WHO is funding this crap?
I knew there was a reason I gave up watching TV.

I don't need to see ads to tell me what to think, I've seen enough.

What if they spent $25 BILLION to help the wounded and their families? Instead, Cheney and fellow neocons like Ari advocated slashing and cutting of VA funding through all the years of the war.  It is POLICY of these neocons to kick the veterans to the curb and blame them for the war's outcome should it not be an absolute victory.  Nixon's dirty tricks team's smearing of Vietnam Veterans serves as their blueprint.
Impeach President Bush and all his cronies NOW!!!! What they have done to this great nation is horrific! Oh yes his legacy is set alright...." One of the worst Presidents in the history of this nation" People, it is time to call you state Rep. and tell him or her that enough is enough, end this WAR now, bring our troops home, they have finished the mission!

You and your husband are Viet Vets and your son is serving in Iraq?

First of all, WHY are you living in Canada if you support the US so strongly, and didn't you and your husband learn ANYTHING from the stupidity of the Viet Nam years?  Ever hear of the Pentagon Papers?  Ever read anything other than cartoons or PROPAGANDA?

Geez, one would think that you MIGHT have gained some smarts after the debacle of the Viet Nam years, but NOOOOOO, you even let your son follow in your footsteps, in another BUSH-it war.
Wear it live it,Country First, Not diper time,
forget all this  talk about money..who cares about money ..its all about me and my fellow soldiers and when we will be able to come  home.....and if we will come home
It's nice to know Jerry forgot the Repugs held the majority in Congress when this fiasco was authorized.  Oh wait... all he does is conduct Rovian/Limbaugh attacks and he cannot defend his repugs.

That takes the award for the most insensitive post I have seen here.

Has Bush lost his last marble? Vietnam? Is that why he joined the Texas Air National Guard? If he really belived in that cause why didn't he join a force that would have guarantee that he get in the fight?
It's amazing if you take a minute to watch the ads - 2 of the 3 actually say "They attacked us" How many ignorant people still don't understand that Iraq did not do the attacking on 9-11??  Geesh, it's embarassing to think they are still using this line in their 15 million dollar ads.. but some stupid people will never get it...

We lost the war in Viet Nam and the current improving economic relations with the country only prove we did not have to go to war in the first place.  We stopped the elections in the 1950's because we knew Ho Chi Minh would win in a landslide.  Is this administration rewriting history again using an ad campaign?
Would some "believer" please tell me exactly how many American lives need to be lost before the Iraqis get their act together? I would also like to hear why anyone outside of this administration believes the various Iraqi factions will EVER be able to agree. If our military leaders now concede that military victory is not a realistic possibility, and political agreement is not in the cards, exactly why are we staying? We need a draft to get the outrage that it will take to stop this insanity. Fat chance since that might mean that those other than the poor would be fighting and dieing
bush spoke recently to a vfw group about the similarities of iraq to vietnam. what gives that draft dodger the right to talk about vietnam? i'm surprised the vietnam vets in that crowd didn't get up and confront bush about his hypocrisy! it really amazes me how much the public is accepting this clowns lies. it sickens me.
I hope that all who posted messages are doing something more than writing - we need to jump on our Congresspeople to vote against funding for the war so we can have a majority in Congress- Bush cannot veto.
What truly is amazing is that people really believe there is a line somewhere in the sand where Arabs that want to commit another 9/11 are on one side and Iraq is on the other side.  How idiotic!  If Bush and Cheney are stupid or conniving, whichever "mindless spin" side you're on, what does believing that make you?  And I love the really smart guy, John Doe.  What a c0ward!
