The Iraq spin zone

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
A $25 million spin campaign is on to win the public relations battle ahead of the mid-September Iraq progress report. Two groups on opposite sides of the ideological debate on whether or not to withdraw troops from Iraq have launched a massive television campaign to frame the debate.

Freedom’s Watch, with whom former Bush White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer is working, today launched $15 million worth of ads with anecdotal accounts of injured veterans and families of those who have lost relatives who advocate for staying in Iraq.

The ads are largely in response to $10 million worth of ads already running, which are paid for by Americans Against Escalation in Iraq, a coalition of groups that want troops to begin to be withdrawn from Iraq.

Freedom’s Watch’s new ads will run in more than 20 congressional districts and urge viewers to call an 800-number to tell their representatives “not to surrender to terror,” according to a Freedom’s Watch press release.

“The mission of Freedom’s Watch is to ensure a strong national defense and a powerful effort to confront and defeat global terror, especially in Iraq,” Bradley A. Blakeman, President of Freedom’s Watch, said in a statement. “Those who want to quit while victory is possible have dominated the public debate about terror and Iraq since the 2004 election. Freedom’s Watch is going to change that.”

Here are links to four of Freedom’s Watch ads, “Veteran,” “Travis,” “Robinson” and “Jesse.” The last line from “Jesse,” spoken by a family member of a soldier who died in Iraq, is: “We already had one 9/11, we don’t need another.”

SPIN.........SPIN.............SPIN.......LIE.....LIE................AMERICANS DIEING.............SPIN....LIE.....Sept 15th arrives.....THE SURGE IS WORKING...........VICTORY IS IN SIGHT....AMERICANS DIEING..........INNOCENT IRAQIS DIEING........SPIN....SPIN...LIE....NEED WE SAY MORE!
Someday, hiopefully in the not too far future, all the nay-sayers who criticize ANYTHING our government is doing to bring peace to the far places that do not know peace will find that most of what our government has done was good.  Costly in both lives and money, yes, but the results will be deemed good. Not just for the United States, but the whole civilized world. Pulling out of Iraq before peace is restored is like giving the terrorists a free hand to ravage as they please ALL freedom loving countries.  If we pull out, THEY will win and are again free to grow stonger and spread their hate-filled ideas to all humanity.  They do not put ANY value on human life as we civilized people know it and will work eagerly to spread their religion of hate, death and human suffering to ALL to satisfy their warped ideas.  This administration is trying to stop that very real possibilty. People who argue and fight against it are signing their and their children's death warrant. For God's sake, give it a chance to work!
Where are we going to get the troops to occupy Iraq for another five ot ten years. The U.S. Army (in which I proudly served) is stretched to the breaking point. President Bush is on "autopilot" and out of touch with reality. To use a sports analogy, hopefully we can "run out the clock" on President Bush's second term before he can do more damage to our country, our constitution and our military.
can you imagine democrats in congress talking about President Roosevelt or Truman the way the current group talks about our President?  They can think what they want, but that kind of speech undermines the war effort, thereby undermining our troops.
We are in trouble because ignorant people will believe everything they are told.  The Republican machine knows this, for they have studied human behavior better than the Democrats have.  They have invented a philosophy that divides people by playing to the racial, religious, financial, and emotional hot buttons for all segments of the US voter spectrum.  Please people, be willing to consider that perhapsyou could be wrong about the way you feel, or what you believe.
thank God for the 4 ads. all the left wing queers need to get the facts and stop watching John Stewart for your news and open your eyes. Iraq is not lost. we just need to get the government to stop whining and do something constructive and stop handicapping our military.
How can Americans get it through the heads of Republican Congressmen that it is time to stop this madness? Do we have to wait another whole year to vote them out of office? The War in Iraq is not only immoral but lost, and if it weren't for Republicans in Congress who won't see the handwriting on the wall, we could be getting our soldiers out of harm's way NOW!
This war is just to get rid of old aging war hardware and to try out the new. NOBODY but the MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX benefits from this war.
This shadowy group is the reason our National Cemetery is filled up with innocent kids of ours.
This group is willing to have our kids killed in a far away place that non of us cares about. This group finds it acceptable to see tens of thousands of our kids killed every 30 or 40 years to keep their industry going.
This group is reason we have no peace, and why most of the world dislikes us. Let's face it, we are what once a president of ours called the "evil empire" not the Russians.
Didn't Josef Goebels, the Propaganda Minister from Nazi Germany die in WWII??? Maybe Ari Fleisher likes the character so much he decided to play him for Hier Bush???????

Oh, and will someone please define "victory"
J.hamilton,

Have you read the posts?  I think you and I both know who the propagandists are and we both know who is following the spin and who is thinking for themselves.
As an independent I know that the message I send to cutthroat cowards that kill women and children is that I will support anyone who will kill them or help my country do it.  Secondly I will never leave until the job is done. (See Germany, Japan, Korea and would have been Vietnam except for the same blowhards that are still spewing today, Kerry and Kennedy).

I would like to know if we found the infamous"WMD" that were given as a reason to go into this abyss.
And, what about the other reasons given to go off to the presidents war.
Just think. Now that all of the reasons have been proven to be lies, won't someone from the Bush team come forth and admit it was just a hoax and an ill conceived attempt to grab the oil.
No WMD, no alcaeda connection [at the time], no 911 connection, no attempt to buy yellow cake, no nukes, no mobile chemical labs---Nothing but lies.
All of this and it has only cost us a little under a trillion dollars.
I feel very sorry for the families left behind, and have a huge amount of respect for the troops.
This quagmire surpasses the stupidity and arrogance of the Vietnam war by a mile.

If we were told that the main objective in Iraq was to get rid of Saddam Hussein, I wouldn't have had a problem.  Instead we were told that there was a possibility of WMD production and usage.  Bush was not only complicit he was also a tool of the CIA, Haliburton, and others who stood to gain from this war.  I do believe that if Iraq were to have a successful/model democratic government, one that functions, many in the middle east would make note of its success and implement changes of their own.  I don't want to see our troops in harms way, but I ask that we try to think of the multiple positive outcomes that this could bring.  Maybe then each families sacrifice would have meaning.
After glancing at the tv and seeing the NY twin towers and "they attacked us", when is this going to end. Maybe ignorant people still believe that Iraq had something to do with 9-11, but the people participating then were from Saudi Arbia and Yemen. They are suppose to be our "friends". I feel for the soliders who have lost their life or had crippling injuries, they fought for their country, but unfortunately they too were lied to.  Bush and Cheney (Satan) have duped this country and left America in chaos and at the bottom of the totem pole of respect around the world. I love my country, but we have to get rid of the virus of Republican attitudes of selfishness and being the police of the world.
Hey, have you heard???!  Bridges are collapsing, there is a housing crisis, many people are hurting badly from floods (with no insurance), the economy is going over the cliff?

Remember the popular book from the 1960s--A Nation of Sheep.  Baa.  Good Morning America--time to wake up.
I don't want to be in Iraq away from my family anymore than the rest of my fellow service members do. We followed Bush into this war and helped to destabilize Iraq and now the people who live here are in great need of assistance. Were we right to wage such a devastationg war on Iraq? No one will truly know but we do know is that without assistance a great many people of Iraq will suffer. Were we foolhardy to believe that the U.S. could create a democratic arab country where few others exist? Yes we were! Were we naive to believe we could rebuild Iraq without the overwhelming support of neighborinng arab nations? Yes we were!

The question american people need to answer is quite simple, "Do we want our military to spend the next three to eight years in Iraq strenghtening their forces and ebuildig their country? Do we want to see service members in harms way until Iraq can stand on its own?". Will service members die during this 3 to eight year time frame? Yes, they will die but as the years drag on the numbers will decrease.  Would rebuilding Iraq go faster with help from the many other countries from the United Nations or simply other arab nations? Yes most definitely, but we can't count on getting help from others. We can only depend on ourselves.

The American people must decide what price it is willing to pay to make Iraq whole again. Yes I sad it is the peoples decision because it is the governments job to carryout the will of the people.

Since President Bush likes making references to past conflicts lets discuss one more.

In the fleeting years of the 19th century the U.S. was at war with Spain. One of the less spectacular battles of that war occurred in the Phillipines where the occupying spanish forces were meager and easily dispatched by an overwhelming American military. With the spanish navy sunk and army defeated the American government decided the native Filipino people were not capable of running there own country so it emplaced a governing body of its own.  Needless to say such actions brought about much anger and resentment from the local people.  The very same freedom fighters that helped fight the spanish over the years and liberate their homeland turned into an insurgent force that wreaked terror throughout the islands.  The insurgency lasted for almost 15 years. Initially the insurgency was very effective because they fought for what most Filipinos wanted at the time, to run their own country, but as the years dragged on and the U.S. demonstrated that its intentions were to absorb the phillipines into its territories and not just reign over it like the spaniards did.  Resistance from the loca populace waned there by enraging the insurgents and causing them to turn on their own people. Without local support the insurgency eventually died out and the phillipines became part a U.S. territory until it was returned to the Filipino people many decades later.
"stay the course",isn't that what the captain of the Titanic said.
All those here speaking out against the war and against the Bush Administration will be labeled an enemy of freedom and a supporter of terrorism.  The President now has powers above and beyond the Constitution to deal with you as he sees fit.

Like it or not, our soldiers will occupy Iraq until the Iraqi are "free" or until our economy collapses.  Congress does not listen to you.  Congress listens to the contractors.
Hey, you idiots that think this war in Iraq is accomplishing anything -  PAY ATTENTION!  THE INSURGENCY IS GROWING!  The idiot in the White House got us into this.  The percentage of American's that support the war is shrinking FAST.  The surge should consist of Bush supporters.  That way we can get rid of them, start saving billions of dollars each month, and get on to the business of developing a solution that works.

If the idiot Bush was in charge, we'd still be at war in Vietnam, trying to keep the communists out of California (domino theory).  How this jackass could use Vietnam to justify continued war in Iraq is beyond me.  It shows that he truly is insane.
Is there something in the water in Texas that saps people's intelligence?  I think you must live so far apart from each other in your 5 acre plots that you really are able to believe anything you want to believe is true.
To respond to Dennis Brewer of Azle Texas, you're right that Iraqis want to attack Americans - it's confirmed in national telephone polls there.  But Bush himself said Iraq had nothing to do with 911, and his spin doctors are still trying to convince people otherwise!  You are supporting liers!  Wake up!
viet vet shame shame the ghosts of 58000 friends and comrades implore you to send no more to the grave. fine young and in this war old men ,FATHERS BROTHERS AND SONS,women, MOM SIS AND DAUGHTERS in an ill thought out under staffed and without the correct equip ,just today the defence contractor was supposed to deliver 3000 plus mine sweepers instead 1500 delivered what would ww2 have been if contractors were in charge ,how many planes would rosie the riveter would have made not enough thats what so instead of rah rah bullcrap stand up for our brothers and sisters who cares if we want out its up to bush not us but the least we could do is give the equip to do the job,by the way if bush had been around in 75 youwould still be in nam from the sounds of it
It seems like if you are the President of the United States then you are wrong.  Some members of our Congress want to tear down  the USA.  All they are worried about is getting elected.  All Democrat candidates are always mentioning this "President"  he is OUR President (right, wrong or indifferent).  He is the only one we have contrary to some members of Congress who think they are.  If you are for America then America comes FIRST.  Stop the bickering and help with the solution.  If President Bush had done nothing he would have been wrong, he did something and he is still wrong.  Stand up for Americans first keep our country safe. Stop the game playing.  President Bush is not running for re-election, plain and simple.
steve barbarossa please allow me to get out of the way at the recruitment center and let you sign up,another bush chicken hawk the army are not paid mercenaries they are citizens like you so shut up or put up
When will the "Mainstream Medai" start talking about this oil-sharing law that we keep prodding the Iraqi's to pass, and tell the American Public EXACTLY what it is...Exxon Mobile, Shell,, & BP are basiclaly hoping to gain the majority control of oil rights, and the Iraqi's will have a minority claim....Why would they EVER sign this into law...?  Get a clue America, it's not about stability, it's about CONTINUING to line the pockets of these Oil Executives, and lining the pocket's of companies like GE, the largest Military Contractor IN THE WORLD!!!!
hey clay ask the jewish and the egyptian people who settled thier life long hatred with a rose garden signing camp david accords look em up,what the jewish people and arabs have never done is achieve peace through war land maybe but not peace. So because you forget or never learned history you will always find the same problems staring at you war is not the answer negotiations first defend yourself secound if that means the japanese attack us in pearl harbour before we first strike them then that is the way not to copy the enemy but to rise above what would your JESUS do.
I guess once we leave Iraq, all the terrorists and other factions will have a big group group hug and sing God Bless America or maybe Kumbaya. And of course, they won't kill every Iraqi that tried to help us.  Those of you who like nothing better that to repeat the "Bush Lied" line, should add in France Lied, Britian Lied, the UN Lied, et al... Because EVERYONE agreed that Saddam was working on chemical weapons, even his own generals.  And then we gave him a year to clean everything up and ship it to Syria before we invaded, so SURPRISE!!! we didn't find anything.  But I guess anything that takes more intellect than "I HATE BUSH" is more thought than you are willing or able to muster, so I'm just wasting my time.
"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"-Elton John
to John Doe, in Seattle, Washington:  We are in Canada, my good (?) man because my husband was called here to pastor a church.  And what we learned during the Vietnam conflict was that to have freedom, we must be willing to fight for it. Closing our eyes to people who want to control ANY human beings is NEVER an option. By the way, it matters not where you live if you love your country and want to support it -- as we did, as my dad did during WWII, and as my brave son (and many other equally brave sons and daughters) is doing.  Don't forget, these young men and woman WILLINGLY joined forces to defeat the enemy.  They are not stupid; they have not been duped.  They see real danger and have stepped up to ward it off. And they are not complaining about it, either.  Enough said.

Does Sean in Iraq, Iraq have a crystal ball?  How does he know another 3-8 years will bring success?  How does he know it won't take another 20 years?  How does he know American deaths will decrease in the interim?  How does he know we will ever be successful?

Apparently he knows something the rest of us don't.  Perhaps he can share that with bush (capitalization intentionally omitted) and General Petreaus.  Short of his magic but secret solution, there is greater  evidence that MORE Soldiers and Marines will die each year and that we will in fact be forced out by the Al Maliki government and the lack of support by those that matter most - young men and women no longer willing to risk death and dismemberment for Haliburton or the phony dream of bringing democracy to Iraq.

The only way we were able to decrease loss of life in Vietnam was by ending the search and destroy missions that, in fact, were costly to the US but also to the NVA.  Now we propose doing the same in Iraq by reducing our mission to training Iraqis and guarding US infrastructure.  Like Vietnam, we will become isolated in a few major bases and in the end. after more Americans have died, Haliburton has made more profit, and the world is done laughing at us, we will come home.  In the end, Iraq will be what Iraq has always been - a country embroiled in turmoil and violence.  Only Americans won't be coming home in bags anymore and Bush will on the cover of Mad magazine.

Anyone want to be on the cover of Mad magazine with GW?
How dumb does Bush Think the Americans are not Homeland Hitler-Fatherland Stalin-Mmotherland-Bush-homeland ME-AMERICA,The closer Bush  gets to end of term the more dangerous he will be keep eye on IRAN.
WE CAN ALL DO SOMETHING  TELL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES TO BRING OUR SOLDIERS HOME WHY KILL ANY MORE
This administration could care less of what the majority of the citizens of this country want.  Read about the "Unitary Executive" and "The Project for the New American Century" if you like to know more about imperialistic facism. On the latter, read who signed the "statement of principles."  Kind of scary folks.
This is ridiculous for the United States to have someone so stupid running this country and it's even more ridiculous for the Democratic Congress to let it continue for even one more death or billion dollars. As a citizen and tax payer of this great nation we have a absolute duty to demand from our congressmen to do what is necessary and put a stop to this and do it now. Cut off funding or suffer the consequences in 2008.
"Patriotism is the last refuge
unto which a scoundrel clings.
Steal a little and they throw you in jail,
steal a lot and they make you king."
                   Bob Dylan
The article says two groups on opposing sides are funding commercial ads. That is the American way. I know some of you far left wingnuts would like to see that change.  Why not let citizens make up their own minds?
I seriously do not know what Bush wants to accomplish. I was over there, watched friends and my soldiers die while I was wounded. I think he IS just trying to make the biggest diaster of his presidency accomplish somthing to save his namesake. Unecessary deaths and Taxpayer money are being wasted, while a Veteran of War can't afford gas to get to work and support his family!
Freedoms Watch - What a joke when you consider the chickenhawks funding & running it while hiding behind actual soldiers. I'm not surprised they have some seriously wounded people, and heart-wounded families in favor of continuing the war - who wants to discover the terrible sacrifices were not only in vain, but the result of a thoughtless & cowardly WH?
We stand to gain nothing by standing in the middle of a civil war, and we've hammered our soldiers & hardware into the sand while flushing billions of $$$ we could have used to improve our own country.
Bush and his administration are the source of, or a primary contributor to, most of the current array of our problems. They have lied and intentionally manipulated all they could to grab and hold power and imposed a destructive and naive world-view on at least half of the voting public of this country.  Add to this that they also have been completely incompetent in most of their (ab)use of this power, and most clearly in the execution of this divisive and futile war, and it becomes obvious that the first way to make things better is to get rid of Bush and his cabal. Alas, rather than Bush being made irrelevant by our election, it seems that the Congress, the Senate, and the American People are irrelevant. What a pitiful bunch of cowards, liars and criminals we have running this country. They dishonor all sapience, including themselves.

If we wanted to truly be good and responsible citizens of our planet, we would hold them accountable. We should be talking about impeachment and prosecution for war crimes and treason against our constitution. What right do we (did we ever) have to kill people to spread our ideology?  And even if this were just through some natural law, when did our culture decide that ill-means are justified by good ends?  Let's start doing the right thing, and show the world we are not of this ilk. Let's hold these criminals accountable for their crimes. Impeach and prosecute now!
If you're not mad as hell - you're not paying attention!!
The life of every soldier lost in Iraq-nam has been a life wasted. And those of you/ewe who support George W. Bush, our mobster president, are traitors to American ideals and American constitutional precepts.
Listen to all the latte liberals who feel bashing our Commander-in-Chief will somehow end our missions in Iraq.

I like to print out their responses and put it up in the barracks so the soldiers can see the pathetic idiots that we have to defend.

Move to Canada already, we won't miss you.
Dogman --If you're not mad as hell - you're not paying attention!!

I am mad as hell, but it's not clear at what.  I hope someone here will tell me so I can direct my anger in the correct direction.
Let them spend all of the money they want, it is useless for them. As they say, you can't fix stupid.
This war was lost when the first soldier stepped on Iraqi soil, no amount of spin can ever change the facts.
from reading these blogs I'm starting to believe that America is not the reflection of its government.
I just hope the thinking people of America make a stand against the religious evangelical zealots that put this administration in for another term.
They are pro life but also pro imperialist aggression.
who's life are they pro for...their own, and screw the rest of the world if it doesnt jump on the imperialist/capitalist/ christian bandwagon. Now that's freedom and democracy!!!
Left or Right wing views aside, if you look at al-Qaeda's manifesto it's clear they have regional and global ambitions. If we think withdrawing will end this we are mistaken - it's a question of how do we continue the fight if we decide to come  out.
Our esteemed president has made the case that without the US's efforts in Vietnam the whole area would have gone Communist and we would be facing a much worse situation there now. He forgot to say AFTER we left the VIets and the Chinese almost went to war over a northern border dispute------apparently they didn't like each other too much and probably still don't----kind of makes one wonder just how much the region would have "declined" without our horrible efforts there.
As for re-education camps-----ever hear of Guantanimo Bay? NO charges, no trial, no release even for those who have been proven innocent----maybe a little non-torturous but "vigorous" interrogation once in a while just to show them we care.
All that AND Mr Bush has made potluck stew out of the constitution under the umbrella of "national security"------he has been a very busy president, one whose name will surly be a heated topic of discussion for many decades to come.
Sure hope we as a country can survive after this debacle.
I read in the news that we are paying British security guards to protect contractors in Irag $180,000.00 dollars a year. Does are military people know about this? If not someone needs to wise them up so they can catch the first flight back to the states. Let Bush send his kids over there to fight.
Enough spinning - What are the facts?  This spin is costing us our precious lifes, squandering our money and costing America's future.  Tell the truth - What is the History.  They have been fightening one another sine 621AD, so why don't the conservative Bush supporters just learn from history?  Are they incabable of learning?  Sometimes I think these conservatives are so anti-American, that they want us to be terrorized.  They certainily are not dedicating their resources to get Bin-Laden.  I'm convinced these conservatives want power so much that they will and are needlessly sacraficing American lives and our resources.  Look at History-  they want us to be sacared just like the Nazi regime scared their citizens.  How lame and gullible do they think America is?
bush and his administration are one big lie. he cheats to get into office twice n screws up the country. all he wants is that iraqi oil. thats what he in this war for. he needs to be impeached.
O.K. Lets have a war.
Lets lie to sell the war.
Lets forget that Cheney once said that to remove the Iraqi govt would lead to a horific quagmire.
Lets forget that Iraq did not launch, or support, the attacks on 9/11.
Lets forget that 80% of those that did came from Saudi.
Lets forget about the Billions of dollars spent to give a failing Iraqi govt a vacation.
(Because "it is 130 deg in August", How about our troops in 130 deg heat in August?)
Lets forget that we started all of this mess years ago by arming Iraq in the first place.
Lets forget what really happened in Viet Nam.
(As well as who fought and who dodged that war)
Lets forget ourfailing schools, Teansportation infrastructure, destroyed citys that will never get rebuilt in this country.
Lets just spend more money to sell the lies of this administrations world-wide debacle.
Bankrupt the middle class, and create a two class system (which it seems those in power truely want to see) in this country.
Allow the fleecing of the American public by Bush pals in Business (Haliburton,Big and Little Oil,ect..)

Lets have a war.
