Bush, Pentagon assert support for Maliki

At his speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, President Bush emphasized support for Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

“Prime Minister Maliki is a good man,” Bush said, “a good guy with a difficult job, and I support him. And it is not up to the politicians in Washington, D.C to say whether he will remain in his position. That is up to the Iraqi people, who now live in a democracy, not a dictatorship.”

Video: President Bush speaks to the Veterans of Foreign War annual meeting in Kansas City.

The Pentagon echoed sentiments out of Bush and the White House this morning, saying the Department continues to support Maliki.

Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell conceded that the pace of political progress in Iraq has “not been to anyone's liking,” but added that Maliki’s government is “the government we have been working with, and we will continue to be supportive of their efforts.”

“This is our guy right now,” Morrell said.

Also asked about reports that the U.S. will drawdown the U.S. troops in Iraq to about 110,000 be next September, Morrell said only, “It's premature to judge where we're going to be one year from now. Way premature.”

Apologies again to Still Crazy
Nice too bad he was in syria telling bush to kiss his a** and say he can find other friends with friends like that......hows the Iranian connection bush helped clear the way for. under sadamm the iranians were the enemy you know the people the right wing want to nuke man women and child sounds good to sadamm and sounds good to the neocons they could be one and the same.
Sorry cannot stomach anything Bush has to say---he is a prevaricator and an insult to this country.Read the protester manifesto today and it is strictly from the Hitler manifesto.
Maybe we could swap Maliki for shrub and get a good guy. I guess not, shrub has no idea what he is saying all the time.  The repuks that support the dumb ass can barely talk and chew gum at the same time.
Water seeks it's own level same for sewage.
"Also asked about reports that the U.S. will drawdown the U.S. troops in Iraq to about 110,000 be next September,"

Just wait two years from now, and ask any DeMyopicRat, and they'll be able to answer that question with perfect hindsight.
Waht was the point of the surge again? 14 Americans died today in Iraq.
**** 9 billion dollars a month to be in Iraq *****     9 billion dollars a month to be in Iraq  ***** 9 billion dollars a month to be in Iraq  ****  9 billion dollars a month to be in Iraq  ***** Thousands of U.S. soldiers dead or wounded. Maliki and Parlement on "vacation". No frighin end in sight.
"I looked Mr. Putin in the eyes and saw a good man."
Heckuva job Maliki, Brownie, Tenet, Gonzales, etc. ad nauseum.  Bush and the Repugnicants that support him are an embarrassment to this country.
Who gives a rat's butt if he is a "good man"?

The Iraqi Prime Minister has accomplished NOTHING that will enable our brave troops to come home and then fight the real war on terror elsewhere.

Our men and women are dying while this "good man" does NOTHING.

Bush is a fool and has no plan.
George, as long as your spinning parallels to Vietnam into some tortured double helix of convoluted logic, why don't you consider the 1963 US sanctioned coup against President Ngô Đình Diệm of south Vietnam. My friend Larry has it all figured and I told him I'd pass it on. Here ya go, no charge.

" Ya see, you can have the Iraqi generals  get-r-done and it'll look like a homegrown thing, see? Nobody will suspect a thing cuz they would have to read history to know about it, see? heh heh. The Iraqis, who prolly don't read Merican anyway will be fooled into thinkin they is just followin a popular uprising and we can just say hey, well it's your Democracy, we're just here to help out a neighbor. Heh Heh. Let me know what you think, Dub.

Larry the "Neo-Con Think Tank" Guy
Our president has absolutely NO credibiltiy. Every thing he says at this point is wrong. All hes thinking about is saving his own skin. He doesn't care about our soldiers or anyone else- except himself... the very sad hard truth.
Wow, living in a democracy?  Bet they want to spread that sh.. around, they're having such a glorious time.

Bush, keep you mouth shut....unless you start to turning blue, then breathe!
Maliki get's about as much done as Bush does, no wonder he likes him. He's a "non-performer". I say they both should be "impeached".
President Bush loves "Loser's" Putin let's see the eye of the beholder, Rumsfield's you go to war with what you have, Harriet you will be rewarded some day just not today, Gonzales, we will always be together, Cheney I'm the President & pay no attention to the rabble rousers.
Saving his own skin? If he wanted to save his own skin, he could've just pulled the troops out.. he's instead doing the exact opposite thing by fighting it out. Remember liberals, he did say many times before that if the generals told him that the conflict was not winnable that he will pull the troops out of the conflict.
He believes so do I that we still have a good chance at winning this thing.. stop beign so ignorant and closed minded you defeatists!

the american people do not support Bush, report. end of story.
Dear President Bush: No one and I mean no one is listing to you. Your a "lame duck" , quak..quak
JT kenshecy general to you ,mean anything ,500000 troops didnt listen then aint listening now.Patraus will tell him just what he wants to hear the surge is working, but how long ,till bush leaves thats how long then it will be someone else to blame fo the disaster he has sown Enjoy reaping the benifits. There is a light at the end of the tunnel westmorland said that ,58000 dead and we trade with vietnam worked out well for us
Forgetwhat bush said about Putin. How about this BS?

"As chief executive, he showed a deep and far-ranging knowledge of public policy, a great compassion for people in need, and the forward-looking spirit that Americans like in a president," Bush said as the Clintons sat in front of him in the first row of chairs. "Bill Clinton could always see a better day ahead -- and Americans knew he was working hard to bring that day closer."
riiiiiiiiiiight....and how many generals has Shrub gone through until he found the ones to say what he wanted to hear?!  gimme a break.
$9 billion...$9 billion...$9 billion...$9 billion...$9 billion...$9 billion... $9 billion... $9 billion...$9 billion... $ 9 BILLION DOLLARS EACH MONTH TO BE IN IRAQ. Let's send the bill to George Bush.
OK jt, here we go again.  Define winning!  You neo-nuts never will define what that looks like, cause you have NO idea.  What will we win?  We have accomplished everything Bush said we needed to do.

WMDS
Oust Saddam
Create a constitution
Have democratic votes by the people
Elect a government

So why are we still there again?

$ 9 BILLION EACH MONTH TO BE IN IRAQ.
$ 9 BILLION EACH MONTH TO BE IN IRAQ.
$ 9 BILLION DOLLARS TO BE IN IRAQ, EACH MONTH.
jt, oh brainless one. Win what? For what? Why aren't you there if you feel so strongly about this never ending, phoney war?
bb: I believe you are as wrong as two left shoes. I am a card carrying member. President Bush by far gave the best assessment of Iraq. We will listen to him before we listen to any "peanut gallery" on the outside looking in. This man is the COC no matter what you think of him, he sticks to his guns. He is damn if he does and damned if he dont with the people that dislike him. Why should he care what you and all his non-supporters think? You dont like him anyway and he will never sway you and your bunch so WTH. He is not running for anything again so he should go for what he knows.
Win this war? You gotta be kidding jt. There is no winning or losing. Thats what makes it so idiotic in the first place. For what? Oh yea, except all those friends of Bush AND Mr.Cheney became very wealthy because of this war. VERY stupid argument jt.
justinok - Just out of curiosity, just exactly how will we know when we have 'won'?
jt, I beg to differ. If it wasn't for the bullet-headed rally round the commander-in-chief types Bush would have never been re-elected. He counted on peope buying the "don't change horses in midstream" argument on the war. Check the latest news on Rove about how every decision about the country was made to achieve a political outcome. He knows it and he decided that it was worth your sons and daughters dying for. Why do you think he keeps emphasizing that he is the "war president"?  Rove and Bush have also decided that the only chance of keeping the White House is to run the clock out on Iraq, damn the deaths. He knows that if he pulls out now that he and his party will be the focus of a lot of anger and recrimination.
The Iraq war will be President Bush's legacy. Must it be our fate?
"Deja Vu (All Over Again)"-fogerty
Obviously you guys will discredit any general that doesn't prescribe to your views and call him bush's puppet. Democrats voted for Petreaus unanimously and everyone knows hes a straight shooter.
It's sad to what extent those who hate Bush go towards.

Gen. Shinseki (sp) did say it will take a couple of hundred thousand troops.. He turned out to be right.
It's a false claim however that he was kicked out and fired for saying that. That just makes no sense. Thats just democratic talking points.
I'm no neo-nut, I'm just a regular american who is proud of this nation and yes, who is idealistic.
I hear this crappy question all the time.. define victory, define victory..

Victory in the "battle of Iraq" is having a nation that can sustain and defend itself successfully against the terrorists. In the long run, Iraqi success will project an ideology of freedom (religion, press, speech etc) and prosperity to the greater middle east. When people look to Iraq, they will desire freedom and democracy in their own nations.

Oh Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11? well Germany had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor.
Shut your lying mouth shrub. Smirk all you want, but please shut up and go away. Nobody trust you to lead this country anymore, except a few blinded individuals.
$ 9 BILLION DOLLARS TO BE IN IRAQ, EACH MONTH. :)

Can I have more please?
"Dear President Bush: No one and I mean no one is listing to you"

Correct.  Everyone is listing away from you.
Maliki has lost control of Iraq, just as Bush has.  They're in the same boat, so of course they've got to pretend not to hate each other.
And, that's right, he thought Putin was some kind of saint or something, too.  If he met satan, he'd think he was "a good guy"---oh, wait, satan's his veep.
That would buy a lort of good liquor.
"DeJaVu (ALL OVER AGAIN)"-Fogerty
DID SOME ONE SAY IT COSTS " $9 BILLION DOLLARS " TO BE IN IRAQ EACH MONTH ?
Iraq is President Bush's legacy. Must it alos be our fate?
The U.S. supreme court picked bush and now they are are stuck with him and so are we!
Someone need to tell the ignorant cowboy that there is no government in Iraq!
No George you can not have a loan of $50,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.00 to help pay for the Iraq" war.
JT< you have very warped logic.  First of all, the Iraqis are not fighting the terrorists.  They ARE the terrorists.  We have 23,000 prisoners in Iraq and only 125 are not Iraqi.
Go to the Brookings Institute website
http://www.brookings.edu/fp/saban/iraq/index.pdf
It shows there are 70,000 Iraqi insurgents and between 800-2,000 non Iraqi insurgents.
Do you think 800-2,000 non Iraqi insurgents are going to take over a country of 25,000,0000 people?
To most of the Iraqi's WE are the terorists.  Thats why 70% of the Iraqi people want the Americnas to leave their country.

As far as the Germany analogy goes, Germany was a declared ally of Japan. Pretty weak analogy.

Malaki, he's our guy.  Remember what Franklin Roosevelt said after being told that his main man had a terrible human rights record,  he may be a son-of-a-bitch but he is our son of a bitch.  Stick with Malaki as long as he can be of use.  BTW, JT, any relatives serving in Iraq?
"Gen. Shinseki (sp) did say it will take a couple of hundred thousand troops.. He turned out to be right.
It's a false claim however that he was kicked out and fired for saying that."
You are correct...he was forced to retire.

Please read something before you say things that make you look foolish;

Read "Fiasco", by Thomas Ricks, or "Hubris", by by Michael Isikoff and David Corn

or, "State of Denial", by Bob Woodward, or, "Cobra II" by Michael R. Gordon

Here, I'll help you;

from Sourcewatch;

   * On August 1, 2003, Donald Rumsfeld replaced General Shinseki as Army Chief of Staff with General Peter J. Schoomaker after Shineski "questioned the cakewalk scenario, and told Congress (that February) that we would need several hundred thousand soldiers in Iraq to put an end to the violence against our troops and against each other." [2]

Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz called his estimate "wildly off the mark" and said, "I am reasonably certain that they will greet us as liberators, and that will help us to keep requirements down." By July 2003, "many experts say that the worst of the chaos in Iraq could have been contained if there had been enough troops on the ground from the beginning. There's a growing consensus that something close to what Shinseki suggested might be necessary to turn the situation around." [3]

GAB: But not right away. The non-partisan ANNENBURG PROJECTS ''FactCheck''asked ''Polls Of Iraqis: Who Is Right''? While it critiqued Bush for his ''things getting better''speech in Dec.2005,which turned out to be uniformly incorrect,it saved especial criticism for the liberal MOVEON.ORG which it flatly stated was being ''deliberately misleading'' in the wake of three Iraq polls conducted by the BBC,TIME,and ABC NEWS.
While we find that just over 69% of Iraqis want the US to leave, this number drops to under 45% when ''return of security'' and ''stable government''are factored in as indicators that would allow the US to commence withdrawl of which nearly 70% do not demand this withdrawl to be ''immediate''.
MOVEON and other liberal-left sources craftily inserted ''leave'' period, without mentioning these other quite important factors. It is a tribute to their misrepresentation that so many people blithely bought in without getting the truth surrounding the average Iraqi. Indeed,we find that more Iraqis are against a Kucinich/Gravel/Paul/Pelosi/Reid formula than they are against the current Bush policy, unsteady though this is.

"DeMyopicRat". You're such a special little fella! Just so very, very precious! And you're right - who the hell cares what GWB is doing/ saying when there is still so much panty-twisting shrillness available in the form of Bill Clinton? Re-cycle and re-use! That's today's right-winger!
