Dem reactions to Bush's speech

From NBC's Mark Murray
A sampling of some of the reactions (so far) to Bush's VFW speech today...

John Kerry: "Invoking the tragedy of Vietnam to defend the failed policy in Iraq is as irresponsible as it is ignorant of the realities of both of those wars," Senator Kerry said. "Half of the soldiers whose names are on the Vietnam Memorial Wall died after the politicians knew our strategy would not work. The lesson is to change the strategy not just to change the rhetoric.

Clinton: "The surge was designed to give the Iraqi government time to take steps to ensure a political solution to the situation. It has failed to do so. The White House's report in September won’t change that... We need to stop refereeing the war, and start getting out now."

Obama: "The disastrous consequences described by President Bush are already in motion and are a direct result of a war that should never have been authorized. There is no military solution to Iraq's problems. The only way to reverse these consequences is to change course through a surge in our diplomatic and humanitarian efforts in Iraq and the region, and a phased withdrawal of our forces that puts real pressure on the Iraqi government to act."

Biden: "President Bush continues to cling to a fundamentally flawed premise –- that Iraqis will rally behind a strong central government. That will not happen... Bush today attempted to draw an analogy to Vietnam, but in fact it’s the president’s policies that are pushing us toward another Saigon moment –- with helicopters fleeing the roof of our embassy."

Carrie...she said the new Tactic is working.  What is the new tactic the "SURGE".

She is the one that said "words matter"
Yes, I was wondering if anyone else remembered just yesterday Senator Clinton telling us how the surge is working.....  she does seem to be having trouble deciding which way to have it.  Senator Obama on the other hand is absolutely realistic in his take on this:  We should have never been there in the first place, period.  However, now that we are we have to withdraw in a phased and intelligent way, all the while pushing hard for the Iraqis to  solve their own political problems.  I won't waste bandwidth on Bush.
The Bush bashers are at it again. They have their chicken clucking blogs of "get out now".  I'm so glad these idoits weren't around during WWII or we would all be speaking German because they would rather wave the white flag than fight terrorism but they'll be the first to complain and throw blame again at Bush when all the men are wearing tubans and all the women are wearing black sheets covering every inch of our bodies. We are not fighting The Iraqi government or the Iragi Army, we are fighting terrorist which part of this does the Damnocrats not understand? (I purposly spelled that word the way I did).
Obama takes anti-war stance to war veterans
KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday told U.S. military veterans who largely back the war in Iraq that he is committed to pulling the troops out -- something his Democratic presidential rival, Sen. Hillary Clinton, played down when she spoke to the group earlier.

She panders to who ever she is speaking to at the time.
Now she yelling get them out but she didn't have the courage to say it in front of the VFW group
Wonder who wrote that report for Bush.....he couldn't even say half the words....I doubt very much he understood it or is he really that idiotic to think that any of us would believe that or anything he had to say......Ride it out and get out cowboy
Obama = Hillary - baggage from her husband

Go Obama!
It seems that the Obama-nation can't say anything positive about their choice anywhere without also bashing the probable nominee. Why isn't the opposite also true?

Van
What a scoop!  The dem’s disagree with Bush who says we should stay the course in his illegitimate war no matter the cost.  You gotta hand it to Dubya for never shying away from beating a dead horse.  The dem’s should pull the funds and get us the hell out.  Sadly, all our brave troops are doing is delaying the inevitable.  Let the Iraqis find their own equilibrium. Sorry for the mess, but until the Iraqi leaders are ready to compromise and effectively govern their people, our soldiers should not be dying to keep them from kill each other.  Political courage, not military power is the only solution.  Oh, and the only thing the Vietnam and Iraq wars have in common is that no Bush fought in either.  Dubya is a coward and a liar who should be impeached.
You mindless drone Democrats just don't get Hillary do you?  You want her to be the next President so bad that you don't really pay much attention to the content of what she is saying.  When she says something you like, you're right there cheering her on.  When she says something you don't agree with, you're right there making excuses and dissecting what she said down to the point where it no longer has any meaning.

Hillary knows you all are thinking that way.  That's why she can get away with taking both sides of every issue.  She'll mush-mouth everything because she knows her rabid fans will glorify the stuff they agree with her on, and wave off the stuff they don't agree with her on.

You'd think you guys would catch on at some point.
He is an idiot making such a stupid comparison to Vietnam.  Vietnam War was a failure for America.  NO WAR SHOULD BE PRAISED. I don't know how American would elect such a fool to be their president. Life are continue to lose without seeing a clear picture of success. On the other hand, never mind of success there is not any if there is one.  Yes, history will judge you idiot, Mr. Brush!
Sandra Brown (or is that jerry again),
so what part of the war in Iraq is going well?  even bush himself said back in June 2007 the military was the reason for the failure in Iraq (see Curt-NJ post today at 2:41 pm for source).  You seem to have woken up after a 6 year slumber...terrorists are in Iraq because we are there; al Queda was not in Iraq prior to our invasion of a sovereign nation, and the Dems do understand that part (obviously you do not). And historically, we would be speaking Japanese, not German, since Japan attacked us on 12/7/1941.  Typical of a bushie to mistake one country for another.  Also, it is "turban", not tuban.  My biggest complaint is that we did not get bin Laden when we had a chance because we went into Iraq.  Time and o3600 American casualties show bush was wrong.
It's arrogant of the Clinton campaign to claim the status of nominee.  The primaries are 5 months away- a lifetime in politics.
GEORGE BUSH...WHAT EVER ?
Go Hillary! You ma girl!
Sandra Brown- A new kool-aid drinker added to mix. You could send if you like your child/grandchild to to be killed in Iraq all in the name of lies for HEAD CHICKENHAWK who still has 17 months to destroy this once great country some more. Your idiotic comparison to Germany during WW2 is par for the course for the ignorant masses like yourself.....Get the facts straight before you spouse your nonsense.
Bush's trying to justify our present situation with what happened in Vietnam is to pardon a pun, so "Bush" league. What a joke!

A school mate of George Dubya's commented on George's single-mindedness and tenacity.  As an example, his friend noted that George would play a pin ball machine all night until he could win one game.  Doesn't sound like George has changed his methods at all.  Only now he is playing on the taxpayers quarter and the lives of other people's children.

Two wrongs don't make a right and neither does a third wrong.  Our reasons for going to war (in Iraq) were wrong, the execution of the war has been wrong and our reasons for staying are still wrong.  Wrong, wrong, wrong.  It is time to cut our losses, optimize diplomatic and humanitarian efforts and bring our troops home.
>>Larry MD - Obama = Hillary - baggage from her husband

Hillary smoked crack?
Gad! Remember Bush was once an alcoholic / addict (cocaine)in his college day and still to this day won't admit it openly and honestly which to me is he is still in denial. My definatin of denial is this,"it is the failure to recognizes that ther is a problem. He still demonstrate that in his policy, a failure. He is still not a recovering alcoholic / addict with what his character defects in his management styles. Too much secrets in his White House. My defination of powerlessness is that it is a loss of control over amount and episode. My defination of unmamageability is that it is a negative consequences as a result of loss of control. Basically Bush is not,in my view, a recovering alcoholic / addict in light of his bringing our country too much negative consequences as a result of his powerlessness over his power as a President of our country. He lacks honesty and transparency. He needs to start get honest w/ himself and with us that he is out of control. I have no respect for him, VP Cheney, Atty General Gonzales, and Rove. Thank Goodness Rove is leaving as he made a big mess for our country. I cannot wait for Bush to be done with his time. It is time for our country to be back in recovery and reclaim our creditibilty with the world for what we stand for
you want to know why we lost a police action in vietnam started by a demo ended by a repub read col hackworths book about face as he stated once he met the enemy and saw how determined they were to kick us out he knew it was a matter of time to bad it took 58000 deaths to get out now bush is saying we should have stayed longer but he didnt want to go just some poor kid defending rich kids and thier deferrments
vanreuter, NY NY -- The opposite is true. I have seen plenty of candidate bashing on both sides. Most of it following the talking points of the respective campaigns. For you to claim sainthood for the Clinton campaign in this area  is disingenuous, self serving and rather puzzling in that it is so easily disproved. But as we have learned from Mr. Rove, throw anything that you have or can make up, some of it will stick. What doesnt stick remains in the public subconscious as a useful meme to be nurtured and fed and activated when needed. Did you guys hire Karl? You both have a vested interest in getting Hillary nominated. Hmmmm.

Hillary is great. she wants to end the war. also she admitted that surge is working in siome areas of Iraq as Obam did admitt. Hillary also said infront of people " lets end this war" she is my hero.
people attacked Hillary just because she mentioned that surge is working some areas of Iraq and Obama per se said that too." . give me a break. Obama's ears does not hear his speech-
Obam's wife attack Hillary about Bill's action. you Obamas. leave Clinton alone. you better tell the voters some thing exciting instead of attacking Hillary.
Same old line at an earlier time -- April 20, 2007 -- http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/19/AR2007041902719.html -- “I want to remind you that after Vietnam, after we left, millions of people lost their life,” Bush said -- http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/US_ThirdWorld/US_PolPot.html -- 1990 -- On the Side of Pol Pot: U.S. Supports Khmer Rouge: For the last eleven years the United States government, in a covert operation born of cynicism and hypocrisy, has collaborated with the genocidal Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. More specifically, Washington has covertly aided and abetted the Pol Potists' guerrilla war to overthrow the Vietnamese backed government of Prime Minister Hun Sen, which replaced the Khmer Rouge regime.
Leaving Vietnam was such a mistake -- now they are competing with the United States in the all-important catfish market.   If we had stayed and continued to bomb the heck out of them, this sad tragedy for the catfish farmers of America would never have happened.  I know a lot of lives would have been lost if we had continued to fight a hopeless battle for 30 years, but think of the catfish!

Vietnam today is a prosperous and functional state despite all the gloomy predictions.   Asia did not fall to Communism, which is what the press told us over and over again would happen in a heartbeat once the US withdrew.   Hmmm, sound familiar?
You can't win a war against an idea (in this case, radical islam)  using guns and bombs, period.  Just as you cant destroy america by blowing up buildings and bridges.  Problem is that Al Qaida knows this, and king georgie does not.  how do you destroy america?  well, try stretching its military thin, isolating it diplomatically from the rest of the world, strain its economy, and turn its people against one another.  Of course, none of this is possible without an imbicile in the white house.  Enter little georgie.  This knucklehead couldnt fight his way out of a paper bag, so he has no right to draw any comparisons to another tragic war to help accomodate his own blunder.  You cant stick a gun in someones face and say 'stop hating me or ill kill you'.  Georgies war has more than quadrupled the amount of america hating terrorists, destabilized the entire region, and accomplished NOTHING towards anyones goal of fighting terrorism.  And people who still support him are just as clueless about how the world works and the little man himself.
When a big lie catches up with you then just come up with a BIGGER LIE...worked for Hitler, worked for Stalin and it has been working for bush due to the low level of education in our Land. Orwell was so correct as to the ability of a corrupt government to manipulate history and to twist it to their own evil designs. This fool and his minions have got to go....disgraceful as if a continuing butchery will sanctify the past horrors. Bush just wants this war to go on till he leaves then he can blame some one else for the coming mess and say : "I was doing a good job but this current President just screwed it up!"  Will no one rid us of this pox upon the land???
I get the feeling all Bush, Cheney and Rove do is sit around and try to figure out ways to talk their way out of the Iraq mess they created.  Do they ever try and come up with viable solutions? I think not. That would take work and brains.
Let's take away George Bush's  $ 9 "BILLION" DOLLAR A MONTH CREDIT CARD FOR IRAQ. THERE GOES YOUR "SOCIAL SECURITY" DOWN THE DRAIN.
How ironic, that the privileged draft dodger from the Vietnam era should invoke that tragic war started also with lies! He says our troops must stay and die for those idiots who hide in the Green zone that we call a government. Bush's removal from office is the only way to bring our troops home and out of that mess.
Van says - "It seems that the Obama-nation can't say anything positive about their choice anywhere without also bashing the probable nominee."

Huh, Obama supporters are bashing Obama?
Bush's little parade before his speech?  Let's see...oh yes, Triumph comes to mind:

Roman History. the ceremonial entrance into Rome of a victorious commander with his army, spoils of war, and captives, authorized by the senate in honor of an important military or naval victory.  (From Dictionary.com)

Usually then the Senate would meet and the returning General, often a high ranking senator, would make speeches for his own cause.

Hmmmm, I don't know, can you see any similarities here?
Bring the Troops home NOW!

Fight this war on American streets where it belongs!

Better 3000 American civilians dead than 3000 of our brave troops!
Bill: You are wrong. I totally get Hillary. She is one smart cookie and a shrewd politician and thats one of the things I admire about her. Shes tough enough to lead the country and actually knows a thing or two about diplomacy....and boy could we use a healthy dose of that about now!
Where are Gravel comments. He is in the race too.  Why the censorship?  Are we now the Soviet Union where the politicans control MSNBC.

Next time publish comments from all the candidates.

Eric Von Baranov
Hillary versus Rudy -- two unprincipled triangulators.  Obama's the man.
Going Nuclear

The only thing scarier than Bush’s insinuation that he is willing to sacrifice the lives of at least another 50,000 soldiers in Iraq is the implication that he is prepared to go nuclear in Iraq. After all if he is saying that we should not have lost Vietnam, he must be listening to the Vietnam revisionists that say that the only reason we lost Vietnam was because we had one hand tied behind our back, in that we were unwilling to use nuclear weapons.

According to these same people the other reason we lost was because soldiers were rotated out of the conflict. Apparently if they had known that they were there until either they died or the war was won they would have fought harder.
Let's end this stupid war now!!!! To envoke the name of Vietnam for political purposes is a slap in the face to the men and women who died and served in that war. Albeit--a disaster militarily and politically, to even compare the two wars are beyond me. CLinton and Obama are correct in their assessments and should be appaulded.
President Bush needs to be impeached, tried, and sentenced to death for his acts genocide and war crimes against humanity.  As Hitler murdered the Poles to  start WWII so hath George Bush done the same with the Iraqi people.  Our civilization is doomed to failure if we hold to the same moral and legal principle those who are terrorist.
I am very weary of this President and his Administration saying the problem is that the Iraqi government is not making sufficient progress. History has recorded that the U.S. government, under their watch, launched the attack that destroyed a nation and propelled it into turmoil. This President and his Administration bears full responsibility for this course of action. One day all the truth will hold them accountable.
Do You Remember 1975 The Fall of Saigon ???
America run away from Vietnam..
5 millions south VietNamse die in jail 1 million die on sea or on the way to escape the Red Communist (viet-cong)
Is history repeat its self ...? 2009 The fall off Iraq..???
What happen to the Iraq people ....
how many more is going to be kill to be lelf behind in hell ??

My heart is go out for all Iraq people ....As much as the American familly loss love one in the war ....

ps-
send mr Bush to spend one day at war ..I do really like him to see how he feel

Notwithstanding Bush's lies, there was no excuse for voting for the war.

Our representatives should have had the knowledge to understand that there was no basis for this war. Who could have bought into the stupid dog and pony show that Colin Powell put on at the UN to "demonstrate" that Iraq had weapons of mass distruction? What kind of people are we voting into office?

Talk, talk, talk, and no action. Does anyone have the courage to stand up and end the war? Or impeach Bush? Or do we have the leaders we deserve?
The only plan "W" has is to keep our brave troops on Iraq's "killing Fields" until he is out of office.  He should be impeached now because he in incapable of moving off his stubbon position.  Not another American should be killed for this "fatally flawed" President and his war.  He can take Cheney along to the impeachment too!
Keith Olbermann's November 6th Special Comment says all that needs to be said about Bush's continuing lies about Iraq and the lying way he compares it to Vietnam.  For the sake of America, let's hope the public and Congress have the intelligence and guts to resoundingly reject his lies and proceed with his necessary impeachment.  It would be nice if the management of NBC could muster up the integrity and guts to run this special comment this Sunday prior to the football game.  I have long felt that Olbermanns's best Special Comments should be on prime time NBC -- i.e., the Bryan Williams news.
Maybe if Bush or any in his inner circle actually served in Vietnam they'd appreciate what a quagmire it was. Johnson was obsessed with not losing, and the same psychology in play today explains why it took so long to get out. Bush also made reference to Cambodia, which the U.S. bombed but didn't occupy. Ditto Laos. Genocide? Already happening in Iraq, and the sectarian divide was wholly unanticipated by a president who only talked in terms of us vs. the terrorists for the first years of the war.

The scary thing is that many Americans are as ignorant as Bush and actually believe statements like we would have won in Vietnam is we had stayed long enough (never mind it lasted far longer than any successful war, and the Iraq war has gone longer than WWII did for the U.S.). The people he's playing to are the same ones who didn't know or didn't care that Saddam wasn't connected to 9/11 and are likely to think all Muslims are jihadists who hate the U.S.
How can this President have the gaul to even speak of Vietnam, when his family bought his way out of that war so he could snort coke and party hearty, ABSENT FROM DUTY.  If he was sooo concerned over the Vietnamese left behind, why wasn't he there? Where was Cheney?  How many deferrments did he have, FIVE? Or, was it more? How DARE they even whisper Vietnam, how dare they.  And, where is his concern over the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, the innocents, butchered by his present policies? He failed to make an analogy to the similarities of the beginnings of both wars, both wars manufactured.  Does the Gulf Of Tonkin ring a bell?  How stupid does this guy think we are?

And for crying out loud people stop defending Hillary, Ashe of SF is correct. We'll see about Anbar, won't we? Anbar could very well be a trap, another Custer's last stand. And you that are believing and buying into the so-called surge success
reports are simply naive.

One more thing MSNBC, why didn't you get a reaction to Bush's selective and false analogy from Dennis Kucinich? Afterall, he did win the ABC poll, and they tried to bury that. My, the cabal is far reaching, isn't it ?

Goodnight, from Baja California.
Mr. Olbermann's July 19th (Go to Iraq and fight your war yourself, Mr. Bush) is also right on the money.
I agree with the general crappiness, but we can't just pull out of the region now... our illegal war has completely destabilized the entire region, and the 100,000 dead Iraqi civilians will be nothing compared to what the slaughter will be once we're no longer there to referee the tribes and keep foreign intruders at bay.  Like Obama said, more humanitarian aid... but also, for those that signed up for the military, and those who've supported this bullshit, it's time to stick it out and make out country look like assholes, not assholes who destroyed a country and left it to rot in the chaos that is the middle east.
Excuse me, Sandra from Cali, but you are perhaps the most ignorant person that's posted thus far.  There can be NO comparison to the current conflict to that of WWII because NOTHING compares between the two.  Nothing.  WWII was country vs. country, allies vs. axis, etc....Al Qaeda has no country for us to invade, they have no country that they are defending, and they do not fight in any conventional way as WWII was fought.  The war on terror will NEVER be won the way Bush is fighting it, but if he would listen to people that know he would learn that it is possible to achieve victory.  Instead of listening to people that have never spent one day in uniform and know enough about warfare to write it down on the back of a pack of matches (Cheney, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Rice).
Hillary Clinton says "we need to stop referring the war"!!! We started the war!! Did someone forget that? We need to finish it. Kick the media out, keep the politicians out of the Generals work, let the soldiers do their job and we would have them home sooner than you think. War is brutal, you can't be PC in a war. The insurgents aren't politically correct. If we leave here its only going to follow us to our own home. Then what will all of you say that want us out now? We would have lost WW II with the thought process shown here and what the politicians are showing during their run.

Cut off the funding!!! And watch more of our soldiers die. You people don't have a clue. Everyone one of you sits at home, nice and comfy sitting behind the computer arm chair quarter backing the war. Why don't you all come over here and join us?
Why are these debates always so mean and uncivil?  Do people have to exaggerate and tell half truths to win an argument?  If arguments are based on true facts, they don't need the unecessary emblishments

The name calling and distorting of facts makes it looks like you're all a bunch of ingnorant liars who will say anything to support your version of the truth.  How many of YOU served in Viet Nam?  How many of YOU served in Iraq?  How many of YOU know the historical accuracies of Viet Nam versus what is really happening in Iraq?  Many of you spout venomous attacks against the other side that are, at best, half truths and at worst calculated lies.  You fail to realize we are all Americans, and Americans are all members of a world community.  If you want peace, be peaceful, not hateful.  As Gandhi said (I paraphrase) you must be the change you want to see in the world.  You won't end this conflict (in Iraq or at home) through conflict.  Only through honest, rational discussion.

Have a little perspective too.  While every violent death is tragic -- especial those of innocents -- not even 4,000 US troops have died in Iraq during the whole time US troops have been there.  Every year 6,000+ teens die in traffic accidents in the US and another 300,000 are injured. Now there's a cause to rally behind -- a domestic issue that robs America of the potential of our rising generation. (Source: National Safety Council, Injury Facts, 2007 Edition, and Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of the Census, Federal Highway Administration, National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).)

There are some very deep and troubling issues with this war, with leaders on both sides of the aisle, and with their blind-faith minions who spout political talking points and the party line instead of thinking for themselves.  Not the least of these disturbing issues is using the loss of faceless, nameless soldiers for politial gain.  What do you know?  To paraphrase Douglas McArthur: It is the soldier, above all, who prays for peace because it is the soldier, above all, who must suffer the pains of war.

I hope the war in Iraq ends soon.  I hope it ends well for America and for Iraq.  Whether it ends well for the Iraqis is up to the Iraqis.  Whether it ends well for Americans is up to Americans.  Can any of you who bring up the lessons of history remember the dark and divided sixties?  Let's not have another Viet Nam in Iraq or a Viet Nam debate at home.  It divided us deeply.  It was bad for America.  And what made it bad?  Exactly the kinds of unfeeling, toxic rhetoric in these postings.
