Obama on the NIE

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
On the heels of the updated National Intelligence Report on Iraq, Obama proposed eight things the United States should do, including redeploying troops, issuing a “transparent timetable” and ramping up diplomatic efforts

“This National Intelligence Estimate underscores the fundamental truth that we cannot continue to substitute the bravery of our troops for a true commitment from the Iraqi government to resolve the grievances at the heart of their civil war, and a true commitment from the Administration to aggressive diplomacy,” Obama said.

Here’s what Obama proposes:
-Responsibly redeploy our troops from Iraq by issuing a transparent timetable for the planned withdrawal of our troops.
-Aggressively surge the diplomacy required to press for a political solution within Iraq, and to keep neighboring countries from fomenting instability in Iraq.
-Dramatically increase assistance to Iraq's two million displaced.
-Dramatically increase assistance for refugees, including the more than 2 million in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt.
-Fill the 7,000 asylum slots in the United States that the State Department pledged to fill earlier in the year. Political leadership will be required to expedite the department of homeland security's review of Iraqi asylum applicants. Thus far, this year, only 190 Iraqis have been allowed into the United States -- an embarrassing number given the scope of the problem, and the fact that many Iraqis have risked their lives working with American forces in Iraq.
-Appeal to those countries that were part of the Coalition in the Iraq war to expand their refugee quotas and to increase bilateral assistance to Iraq's neighbors who are carrying the refugee burden. Arab governments, especially US allies in the Gulf, such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, should also be enlisted.
-Ensure that our military and financial assistance to Iraq's government and security forces is not being diverted to sectarian militias.
-And make clear to the militia leaders and government officials in Iraq that the United States and the international community is going to catalogue and prepare to hold the perpetrators of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide accountable for their crimes.

**** UPDATE 1****
EDWARDS: "As today's new National Intelligence Estimate reveals, the violence in Iraq remains high, attempts to reconcile the political factions have failed, and the political leaders remain 'unable to govern effectively.'

"I am the only candidate to call for an immediate withdrawal of 40,000 to 50,000 troops, to jump-start all parties to let go of the crutch of the American military and start working on a real countrywide political solution.  Congress also must have complete information about a political solution well in advance of the end of October, when they will again have the opportunity to use their Constitutional funding power to force the president to change course.

"I am also calling today for an immediate diplomatic offensive from the Bush Administration.  This 'diplomatic surge' must begin with an 'Iraqi Stability Conference' that would include high-level meetings by American and allied diplomats with all leading Iraqi Parliamentarians, sectarian leaders, the governments of both Iran and Syria, and leaders in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Jordan, and Kuwait.  These meetings should be aimed at real commitments of how these parties will contribute to a long-term comprehensive plan to stabilize the country."

DODD: "The reported conclusions of the latest NIE are another sign that, even as American troops continue admirably to serve in Iraq, the Iraqi government has done virtually nothing to put its house in order. With no progress on political reconciliation between the various sects in Iraq, it is clear that President Bush's tactic of troop escalation has failed to achieve its goal of convincing Iraqi leaders that they must take bold steps to promote stability and reconciliation in Iraq. In fact the report confirms that Sunnis and Shia remain deeply suspicious of each other with no sign of reversing that belief anytime soon. Indeed, this report is further evidence that there is a disconnect between military operations to establish security in Iraq and elsewhere in the country and the willingness of an Iraqi political leadership to take advantage of improved security to promote political compromise and reconciliation on behalf of all Iraqis.

"I do not believe that Iraq's political leaders will have any incentive to demonstrate bold leadership and reach a political accord until we begin redeploying American troops and it is clear that finally they must fully assume responsibility for their country."

**** UPDATE 2****
CLINTON: "As I have said many times before, there is not a military solution in Iraq.  Progress will only come from political reconciliation and compromise from the Iraqis themselves.  In January, President Bush argued that the escalation of U.S. troops into Iraq would create the political space for reconciliation among the Iraqis.  At the time that the President announced the escalation, I opposed this new strategy because I did not believe the Iraqi government was committed to making the tough political decisions necessary for Iraq to resolve its sectarian divisions.  Indeed, the declassified key judgments from the most recent National Intelligence Estimate regarding "Prospects for Iraq's Stability" clearly demonstrate that progress toward political reconciliation in Iraq has not been achieved since the beginning of the President's decision to add additional troops into Iraq.  The NIE's key judgments provide additional evidence that the President's escalation strategy has failed.  We need to stop refereeing this civil war, and start getting out now."

I particularly like the last part about holding accountable perpetrators of crimes against hunanity. Start with George W. Bush, Dick Cheney & Karl Rove.

At least Obama has a plan----the only thing Bush offers us is more deaths and coffins, mutilated vets and Bull sh--.and poverty at home----the same thing he has given to Iraq
It is so critical that we not forget about the humanitarian needs of the Iraqi's. It is critical to our reputatation, to our humanity, to our honor as the United States of America. It is critical to the lives of those we have displaced and injured.

Senator Obama is thinking along those lines. I'm glad.
Go Obama!
The truth of the matter is many of these plans the candidates are putting out are being done privately (except for actually withdrawing the troops.)
You just can't publically announce every little contingency plan, political deals with neighboring countries etc. Thats just common sense. Is obama suggesting that he won't keep anything confidential and just blurt out everything to the american public and the world. He has to be kidding. There hasn't been one single administration in this country or in the world who has been 100% "transparent" as he puts it. You just can't be. Thats just how the world works.
Why isn't he being transparent about his campaign tactics and future strategies of how to win the presidency? Because if he does reveal it then his opponents will know his strategy and will use it against him.
Democrats don't give me the argument that "how dare you compare Iraq with a presidential campaign." It is much more similar than you think.
I think this guy has his head on strait. He is demonstrating his good judgment. I find it IRONIC that that people think HRC will be the best choice to end the war when she voted to authorize it to begin with.

I think that the pole number that say he is behind are skewed by the sample that they are using. I have never been poled and Come Hillary or High Water I am voting for OBAMA!!!
Obama's list of 8 ToDo's:

1) Redeploy the troops with a timetable.
That's redeploy, not bring home. Redeploy.

2) Diplomacy & keep the neighbors happy.
He wants a surge too. Maybe the neighbors want a piece of real estate. Turkey gets the north, Iran gets the east. Kuwait could triple with a piece of the south.

3)Dramatically increase assistance to 2,000,000 Iraqi's.
   Welfare for 2 million Iraqi's.

4)Dramatically increase assistance to 2,000,000 misc. arabs.
Welfare for 2 million Syrian, Egyptions, Leboneese.

5) Expidite 7000 Iraqi asylum requests.
If they are friendly, and will die for their involvement with us(U.S.) then OK. But you know they don't have jobs so.. Welfare now 4,007,000.00

6) Appeal to coalition countries to open up for more refugees.
Welfare, but someone elses dollar. Same coalition countries we are telling to get out now, before we do...

7) Ensure the military & financial assistance is not being diverted.
How? Going to issue barcodes & RFID chips? But he wants to continue military & financial assistance.(BushLite?)

8) Make clear we are going to hold 'them' responsible.
Were not responsible, You are. Are not, You are. No, you are, and were taking you to Judge Judy, so there...

B.Obama says 'this foreign policy stuff ain't so hard'
So people used to complain about his lack of specifics in his statements...

Surely one of these will spark some headline of controversy somewhere.

Is the Obama campaign strategy to get all this stuff out and out of the way before the late fall?
It sounds like “darned if we do, and darned if we don’t” scenario for us in the U. S.!

http://OsiSpeaks.com or http://OsiSpeaks.org
Wow, compassion and true acceptance of fixing what we break even though he had nothing to do with it. What a man.

And all JB can say is welfare, welfare, welfare - pathetic. He probably supported creating the mess and now won't take responsibility for cleaning it up.
Obama demostrated that he's ready for the job. Where are the people that criticize him earlier on lack of substance?

Obama's statement shows that his judgement is impecable when it comes to foreign policy compare to HRC. The more i listen to him the more i think he's fit to be Commander in Chief.
Obama certainly offers a better plan than just advocating for cutting off funds.  It's one things to just complain about the conditions and what's not working it's another thing to actually articulate a reasonable plan in order to move a solution forward.

Go Obama!
let us refine our focus to the us casualities, some of whom weren't old enough to vote when this fiasco started. how is it that a 19 yr. old from states can die in a war 5 yr on and we still haven't got enough iraqi troops to quell their own internal war? if we can train our own to die that quick why can't iraq and in the beginning wasn't the focus to train iraq to defend themselves? also why do we have 170,000 troops there with the supposedly trained 250,000 iraqi police and troops? when did any general say i need 420,000 troops to finish this? is it because we failed our training under bush watch or they don't want to fight? personally i have advocated an "exchange and extract our troops from iraq" policy to set a cieling for combined troops at 300,000 and withdraw our troops over that amount immediately and exchange the remaining on a one to one ratio for new iraqi troops as clear basic. easy to do and as a vet i could run this war better than these bozoos, but i could have run nam better than the fools who screwed us then too. only person with a real plan is biden but he suffers from foot and mouth disease.and for hillary the surge isn't working if casualities within the country are basically the same, pacifying one province with a overwhelming insertion of troops and them shifting to another location isn't working. let bush do what he did to us job, outsource the the defense to the iraqi's just like we've outsourced us jobs.
Barack Obama displays the judgement needed for president.
He has always shown good judgement and leadership on many fronts and good common sense.  that is his radical new ideas the entrenched establishment like Hillary are so afraid of and don't want to change.  They fear common sense.
Why.  Because it works and but, is also transparent and you can't be as corrupt as hillary is when you use common sense.
Gobama!
I've been seeing a recent trend here among my navy buddies.  Obama is making excellent progress, you know the polls are wrong when military personnel talk of voting for Obama.  The same is true of my civilian friends, Hillary's boat is sinking and Obama's boat appears unsinkable.  He wisely started this race at a comfortable pace and now his momentum is building.  I've been a non-affiliate for 7 years, but thats going to change.  Obama now has my vote.
Obama.  Does the man come up with anything original himself? Or does he just read what's handed to him?
Bee, Obama has been substantive all summer.
What strikes me as most interesting about Obama's approach to foreign policy issues, including Iraq, is that it appears to be driven by pragmatism, not ideology.  However, it is a "policy" which means that it contains American values to back it up.  This is what a "policy" is as opposed to a strategy.  I'm convinced that if the 8 points outlined above by Obama failed to bring results, he would have no problem switching to points that did...
Obama will make a good president in 16 to 20 years.
Right now he's so inexperienced and such a climber, he reeks just like bush.

so far we've learned he has mob connections, he belongs to anti-white church, he's never kept a job for more than a few years.
and NOW he wants to be president?
based on what? What the hell has he ever done in the Illinios congress or the US senate?
NOTHING.
He's never run a business, raised a child, served in the military, had a career.
He's a blank slate and some foolish people are pinning all their hopes on him.
Foolish.
He can't even come up with a single reason to vote for him other than he didn't vote for the iraq invasion...
whoopie, one right in two years.

"Obama.  Does the man come up with anything original himself? Or does he just read what's handed to him?" Posted by Rove Kurl (Sent Thursday, August 23, 2007 10:54 PM)

I don't really understand the basis for this. Nor do I understand what you are really attacking. Is any idea really "original" in a political campaign? Maybe if you are Dennis Kucinich.

JB, Florida,

Thank you for clarifying what Obama really meant. You must be a bitter Republican, based on your obvious, fervent disdain for Welfare. Shall we categorize ALL aid as Welfare? Ok, here goes:

The Bush tax cut for the wealthiest Americans: Welfare

ALL foreign aid to ANY country: Welfare

Our Most Favored Nation Status with China: Welfare for billions!!!

NAFTA, CAFTA and all others: Again, Welfare

Here's an idea: let's tax you at 100%, not give you any tax refunds, and take away any government service that you (probably unknowingly) take advantage of. That way you can claim that you are not on Welfare.

If I have made a mistake in my classifying you as a bitter Republican, then my only other choice is a hypocritical Clinton supporter. If you think that she would not provide aid of ANY kind to ANY country, then you need to remove the wool from your eyes. Doubtless, she would attack Obama before stating she would do the same thing, but that is to be expected at this point.

Pull the troops out of this "Civil War".

Let them run their country they way they want to.
Saddam Hussiem was a tyrant and he gone now.
There was a vote for whom they wanted to replace Hussiem, let the man and his party do their job that works for their country and not what works for the Bush/Cheney administartion.

If the Denocrats can`t get Bush/Cheney to pull the troops out than the Democrats need to not fund this war any longer, that what got the troops out of Vietnam. No Money - No War!!

No one wants to say it, but Bush ran from the Vietnam war, he went AWOL, and now he`s running our contry into the ground.
Take care of the messes that we have here.

Obama/Edwards!!!!
I don't know if you have noticed that HRC fans just type the address of her website - as if that covers her policies or stand - why can't they talk about what she's done or is going to do instead of a stupid address!

Go Obama!
Tuck,

May I ask you where you get your "facts" about Obama's life? It seems to me that you know absolutely nothing about him. Please provide a link to where I can find this information. If you can't provide one, then please stop posting.
Tuck,

You are not very educated on Barack Obama.  He was the first African-American head of the Harvard Law Review. Plus, he has two daughters, so he is raising children.

Fourteen Presidents have never served in the military, so what is your point?

OUR NATION'S SECOND PRESIDENT- JOHN ADAMS- NEVER SERVED IN THE MILITARY....and if we are afraid of losing America to the terrorists now because September 11th is still fresh in our memories, imagine how it felt to fear losing the country to the British THEN!
Rove Kurl = Karl Rove

Rove Kurl: "Obama.  Does the man come up with anything original himself? Or does he just read what's handed to him?"

Doesn't everyone know he's a best-selling author?  People should read the audacity of hope.  The man is brilliant!
Tuck those are much the SAME things they say about Senator Clinton!  Amazing!!
And, just who is John Adams supporting in this election?
