Obama’s direct appeal

Obama varied slightly from his stump speech last night at a rally at Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina, making a direct appeal to the mostly African-American crowd. He talked about the need for a "sense of urgency" to help all people in need, even if you yourself are doing well.

“For those who think, ‘Well my child’s doing alright, I don't have to worry about all these black children and brown children,’” Obama said, “let me tell you something: Half of the U.S. workforce is going to be black and brown in a few years, so our economy is going to depend on how those children do. Our children, making sure that somebody's working to pay our social security, is going to depend on those children working.”

It is heartwarming for me to see Mr. Obama begin to hit his stride and to seem comfortable in this great battle which is before him. He is speaking to all people even though he was in a predominately black venue last night. I hope that he will continue to rise in the polls and will not become too distracted by the attacks, slurs, and misquotes/misrepresentations which the media seems to delight in piling on him.
doesn't look like obama intends to curb the flow of illegal aliens either
If Obama gets elected we might actually start to rebuild the middle class that the neo-cons have worked so hard to destroy.
Senator Obama - Start helping people by pointing out the percentage of minority children without a father has been growing for decades.  Will you acknowledge that the federal government welfare laws are responsible for that situation?  Will you acknowledge that welfare has been a failure?  Will you acknowledge that throwing more money at the problem is not the solution?
There goes his message of hope. Now he is doom and gloom and for the first time played the race card. If had any thought that he might have been a good president it was just drowned on the beach in South Carolina. Now I can see his lack of experience. Edwards might just be the winner with this blunder by Obama.
I like him but he can't win right now.
OK, what is the point?
An extremely interesting and accurate point.  The dude is sharp.
Obama is peaking.

Following his and Michelle's campaigning in Iowa and his superb debate performance and his 7% in the republican-only Ames straw poll, there are sold out events in Brooklyn and South Carolina.

People see he is speaking out of conviction and he is winning the argument on judgment vs years in washington. He is winning the foreign policy argument because he stands behind what he says and his ideas sound sensible.

Iowans like values, NH likes change. Obama is monopolizing the change argument by not going for an Edwards-like angry issue-only driven message.
I see Mr. Obaba is worried about poor children. Well make that poor black and brown children. Sounds like Mr. Obama can draw a line between poor brown children and poor yellow ones. Or maybe between the black ones and the white ones. He could not stick to just talking about people in need, but narrowed it down to what's important to him, the black & brown children.

WAKE UP, OBAMA. This is why you will not make a good president. Your an open racist.
yes !
Its an interesting comment - tying notions of educational opportunity to an ability to pay for our social security. Not an approach I would have taken, but again Obama has that way of his of putting things into a different perspective.
Obama will be a president of the people, wisely working for our better good.  If you don't believe me, just read "The Audacity of Hope"
So much of the momentum is gone form this campaign – the mediocre debate performances probably contributed to the stalled or falling poll numbers and the excitement he generated just a few months ago appears to be waning.
Barack, you sound better and better every day.
The people who are paying attention will vote for you.

You (and John Edwards) give the Democrats the best chance to win in 2008.

You (and John Edwards) give the Democrats the best chance to hold the House and Senate in 2008.

You (and John Edwards) give the Democrats the best chance to govern this nation, and to govern WISELY !!

Obama/Edwards 2008, opur last, best chance !!

csh - disagree with you.

I get the sense he's starting to move, but my perceptions aside, check out the Rasmussen tracking poll. Just today he pulled within 11 points nationally.

Its August and that means nothing to me. Those numbers may well fluctuate all over the place. I'm only interested in where they are in December, and then more interested in the state by state numbers.

But I simply mention it to counter your statement that he has falling poll numbers.
fed up , check your facts more white people are on welfair than any one minority . Think about what you say.
Some people don't read to well...how is Obama "playing the race card" or is a "racist"?  In fact he's doing the opposite by acknowledging that we're all in this together.

It is so ridiculous to say that that I have to assume that the people saying these silly things must be grasping at straws and working for some desperate campaigns.
Fred - Obama has actually said what you're asking of him, he has gone to black churches and criticized the phenomena of black males not sticking with their children.  He has practically made a habit of telling every interest group he speaks to where he disagrees with them, which is just unheard of in politics.
Slight correction on the audience, there are photos out there of the rally. The audience at CCU was a mixed (many whites and others).
Many of the older generations have never thought about who will be paying into Social Security if the children are not educated enuf to find good jobs. They will not be able to support us later on. It is a smart argument. No country or democracy thrives for long w/o an educated electorate(no matter what the race is).
I'm all for the people to decide not the pundits or polls. I don't select a candidate based on debates. they have there place, the question I ask myself, do I really believe they can follow through when elected?
With respect to Hilliary the answer is no. She is a master sales person and nothing more. Everyone seems to be blinded by her so called experience which is zero except for a failed health care debacle. Obama
is the man. So all of you people who are punching wholes in what he says and coming up with all kind of bogus excuses why he can't become president won't vote for him no matter what he says and you know it.So stop trying to make it sound like you would vote for him only if he had performs better in the debates.Denial is not a river in Egypt
JB- i think Obama was attempting to highlight the fact that most failing schools in this country serve children of color- and no one gives a s****. It's terrible that so many of you are offended that in this speech Obama is addressing the minority population instead of consistantly pandering to rich white folk. Maybe you all should look into registering with the GOP...
Barak, you're so desperate you're claiming you're black now? so soon?
"Maybe you all should look into registering with the GOP... " -Jennie Denver,CO

We don't want them. They look down on me just like they look down on everyone else for what they are. Matter of fact if I were the racist I'm suppose to be just by virtue of geography, party, and race I'd be a democrat. If you wanted to destroy a people you couldn't do a better job than the DNC has for the last 40 years. Someone should carve "my baby daddy" in LBJ's tombstone.
Now if by some miracle the RNC could peel off 50% of the black population in this country that 50% could save this damn country from itself. Just think if these idiot Liberals couldn't end every debate with "you're a racist"
I think the principle that Obama laid out (to help others even though you are doing well) is a good one, but I don't think young voters will like how he said "somebody's got to pay for our social security" (even though it is true). I think he could have found better reasons why someone should help other people.
Dave Tn, with all due respect, having followed your posts for a few months, that is your punch line for everything.
Obama is a leader, as opposed to the followers we have been following. Instead of debating about what he 'should' have said, because it may not have been said in a way that is politically correct, he does put the issues out there that should matter. Everything is anaylized, to such a degree, by people, and picked apart, opinions are deemed fact. It is because of such politics that we all have to watch what we say, how we say it and why integrity, value, trust is gone in this country.  A leader, for a change, is what we need as oppossed to 'the good 'ole boys' who need to go. America politics needs to stop focusing on this cold-hearted mentality 'win at all costs'.  Local politics, judiciarys, state politics are all just going with the flow as well.  We, the people, need to use our voices to restore common sense, integrity, dignity, fairness and respect for one another back into America- The best index to the success or failure of a society is how it treats someone that cannot do him any good, personally, and how it treats children. We need to dare to have the audacity to hope. We need to have the audacity to stop blaming and change. Too many are really suffering because it is really hard these days to make it. The reality for children is they are left behind while we try to earn enough to just get by. Even the constitution is not upheld within the legal arena.  Ugh! It would be nice to wake up and not have a battle for once! How nice it would be if we could trust again! America , as great of a nation as we are, needs to get back to basics and we need to stop repeating our past. It is our actions, not words that we are judged by.
Not an approach I would have taken, but again Obama has that way of his of putting things into a different perspective.

Cocaine will do that for you.

don't allow the haters to control the conversation here.
I like him, if he's the nominee, I'd support him up against ANY republican.
Welfare huh.. Maybe we should PAY people NOT to have children.
Jennie..You are so right, no ones cares about another MANS child. Great country America if you have money!
Everyone  should have good schools, but only the well heeled can afford the best. We live in a class society and it is, top, mid bottom and bottom.
Ted Thompson - I'm just happy to have a candidate who does say stuff to make us think, regardless of what life experiences or - as you suggest - chemicals may have contributed to the ideas.

Most of the other candidates just throw out the same old worn lines. They're boring. I want to be inspired, or at least challenged to think... not bored.
