Bush admin’s surge P.R. push

From NBC’s Libby Leist
As part of an administration-wide public relations effort to show progress in Iraq since the surge of U.S. troops in January, the State Department today organized a briefing for reporters to highlight what they believe is a success story in Anbar province.

State and DOD Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) leaders working in Ramadi, Anbar described many improvements in a city they found devastated when a new group of 6,000 U.S. soldiers and Marines arrived in March, but they also admit that the Al Qaeda threat is "always a worry" and that there is no planning for what might happen if U.S. troops are scaled back.

In March, 80 percent of the people did not have water and power, the leaders said, buildings were destroyed and al Qaeda was still a force.

Major Lee Suttee, the lead DOD official for the Ramadi PRT, said everything began to change in April. He credits the combination of local Iraqi police, the Iraqi Army and coalition forces working together as the key to stabilizing the city. Suttee believes the local sheikhs were crucial in the effort to bring the Iraqi police into the mix and turn back support for al Qaeda.

"The fighting stopped. And when it came to a stop, it literally stopped, about April 22nd," Suttee said.

Since then, the PRT's have worked to help the local officials build their government and to bring back essential services to the people there. Suttee noted that there have been 102 days without attacks (though that is not consecutive days). The military is finding weapons caches at a greater rate, he said, and PRT officials are able to travel in two-vehicle convoys down from four vehicles several months ago.

State Department official Kristin Hagerstrom reported that she is now able to walk on the streets and, for example, "you can buy an ice cream cone."

Despite the successes, the officials did admit that the return of al Qaeda remains a serious concern. Hagerstrom said, "It's always a worry. It's something ... everyone's alert about at all times."

Their hope is that that local leaders and police will continue to fight back. "...The tribal leaders and the people of Ramadi, by joining with coalition forces, have basically signed a death warrant, all of them. If al Qaeda comes back, they will kill them all, and they know that. So they're all in it together," she said.

When Suttee was asked whether he was worried troop withdrawals would threaten to erase the progress that has been made, he said he can't worry about that.

"We're trying to strike while the iron's hot," he said. "We feel that if you build enough of this feeling that there's positive hope for the future in the population, that regardless of whether there's five battalions or one battalion here, that the city, with their well-trained Iraqi police, will be able to do the job."

Where's the post highlighting Hillary Clinton's defeatist talk about the GOP benefiting from another terrorist attack?

Sure sounds like whiny, defeatist bunk to me!  If Mrs. Clinton believes she can Win, why be so insecure about her own abilities to sell herself and her Party, no matter the terrorism that does or doesn't occur?

It would help the GOP if the Democratic nominee let it help, just like Kerry (another whiny, hesitant loser) let the Bin Laden video slow his momentum.  The American people deserve a Democrat who will fight for all of us, not make excuses.

If Obama said this, you guys would be on it in 2 seconds flat!!!
If we leave al Qaeda will leave, and we can fight them in Afghanistan unless of course we deem that Bush has messed that one up so bad we need to leave there too. Then we'll leave some other places, and when we've run out of places to leave..............
we have charlie on the run ,there is a light at the end of the tunnel peace with honor its a pretty good comparison, just keep saying as you ckick your boots together theres no place like home all those chickenhawks cheerleading you into battle must make a mans sacrifice all worth the money the pundits are making, god bless the common man
BIG DEAL!!! With enough troops and police, hell can become a paradise. So are we supposed to stay there forever to keep the place from going back to hell again? And what town on the outskirts went to hell when the troops moved in here from there? And don't think that if the locals ever feel secure from al Qaeda they won't turn their guns on our troops. Until the Iraqi government gets their sh@# together, it's all just a game of whack-a-mole and our soldiers are dying for nothing.
Maybe we could use a surge in my upscale DC neighborhood.  You can buy an ice cream cone, but before you get home with it a local gangbanger will take it away from you.  We do have water and electricity most of the time though.
Well Betty sounds can be deceiving,  Sounds like we will wait and hear ALL she said and not snippets.
Pardon us if we will not go for your take on the topic.
"Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up words and phrases and clauses.
Conjunction Junction, how's that function?
I got three favorite cars
That get most of my job done.
Conjunction Junction, what's their function?
I got "and", "but", and "or",
They'll get you pretty far.

[spoken} "And "
That's the additive, like "this and that",
"But";
That's sort of the opposite.
"Not this but that",
And then there's "or";
O-R, when you have a choice like
"This or that".
"And", "but" and "or" get you pretty far.

Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up two cars to one

"Either now or later"
Or no choice
"Neither now or never"

Eat this or that, grow thin or fat,
Never mind, I wouldn't do that,
I'm fat enough now!

Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up phrases and clauses that balance, like;
Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

But the balloon wouldn't go any higher.
Let's go up to the mountains,
Or down to the seas.
You should always say "thank you"
Or at least say "please"

Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up words and phrases and clauses
In complex sentences like
[spoken] In the mornings, when I'm usually wide awake, I love to take a walk
through the gardens and down by the lake, where I often see a duck and a drake,
and I wonder, as I walk by, just what they would say if they could speak, although I
Know that's an absurd thought.

Kristin Haagen-Dazs bought ice cream! Woohoo we're winning!

Seriously though, it is very telling that they admit that if the locals co-operate with us it is a death sentence for them. We need to leave so they can go about the business of fixing their country without incurring a death sentence. No wonder all political progress is paralyzed. It is probably a death sentence to co-operate with the Maliki government since it is associated with us.
I am a poor Iraqi child living here in Bagdad.  Please send more troops to protect me and my family and our goat that gives us milk.  Please send all of your troops.  Actually, please send every gun, missle, and piece of amo here.  We want every single american troop here patrolling our streets.  Also, please thank Bush and Cheney for messing up my country.  Praise be Allah!
Agendas.... Even other US soldiers who are already in Anbar, unlike the moderators of First Read, are agreeing with the administrations estimate.[ We will point out here that when an equal number of seven Iraq veterans took their letter in support of the Surge to the New York Times yesterday, they refused to publish it as is their right....in pursuing....an Agenda.

Agendas... No mention by the MSM outside of  his hometown newspaper [including MSNBC],of how a committed antiwar Democrat congressman [ Brian Baird] can come away changing his mind about the Surge after a visit to Iraq and now support it.

Agendas....First Read didn't bother to add that the NIEs assessment that combat support teams redefined into  counterinsurgency operations  which is a hallmark proposal of the Democrats, as a portion of ''redeployment'',and would result in failure in its bid to fight al Qaeda, was also a ''Key Finding''.

Agendas....Everyone by now has been bashing the new Ari-Fleisher-backed ad campaign run at a cost of over 10 million dollars that support the Surge, with its usual millionare, former GOP administration and thinktank supporters.
But no-one is talking about the new George Soros-backed ad campaign run at a cost of over 10 million dollars that opposes the Surge, with its usual billionare, former Democrat administration and thinktank supporters, with Tinseltown nabobs tossed in for good measure. PS: George Soros'HALLIBURTON stocks, according to Aug. 1  DOW averages, earned him over two million dollars in the month of July.
If we leave al Qaeda will leave,

And where do you think they might go?  Vacation on the Riviera perhaps?
Mark T: Maybe we could use a surge in my upscale DC neighborhood.

Can't.  Guns aren't legally allowed in DC.  The military would have to use their pen-knives (those are legal, right?) to go after the gangbangers.  They wouldn't stand a chance.
Bette, another GOPer for Obama.
The bottom line is that the Iraqi government is unable to either secure or govern itself without the presence of american troops ....which means that if the GOP wins the White House in '08 .. we will be there forever ...at which point Iraq will become another Vietnam ...
Well gangbangers have their own culture and way of doing things. Who are we to impose our will on them? Why should we waste our good and honorable police trying to sort them out? We should just pull out of DC and let the warring parties sort things out.
First it was Iraq has WMD, that was a lie.

Then it was Iraq attacked us on 911, that was a lie.

Then it was we'll be greeted as liberators, that was a lie.

Then it was Stay the Course, we're making progress, that was a lie.

Then it was, the surge is succeeding, that was a lie.

Now it's "I can buy ice cream in Ramadi"

Does anyone believe these liars?

Personally, I carry an AK-47 with me to Baskin-Robbins.  Sure, there has been some collateral damage, but I get my ice cream.  And that's all that matters to me.

Dave, Tn

-No Dave, We should bomb DC with cruise missles. Then we should send National Guard troops from Alabama to occupy DC. Then we should prop up a puppet goverenment. Then we should accuse Virginia of helping the locals and bomb and invade Virginia. The we should arm everybody with AKs, then we should just close our eyes and keep saying, "Stay the course, stay the course, stay the course, stay the course."
American Citizen said "Does anyone believe these liars?" Unfortunately, yes. For example, Dave and jerry do. On the other hand, they may not believe the lies but just consider them part of the political war they are playing.

Next time a Pro-War Hack is interviewed someone needs to ask what the IMPACT is if we stay for another decade. Oor TOP GENERAL ON THE GROUND Petraeus has said it will probably take at least a decade to "WIN".
How many more US Troops killed? 10,000?
How many more US Troops wounded? 50,000?
How many more ISF  killed?  30,0000
How any more ISF Wounded? 150,000?
How many more Iraqi Civilians killed?  250,000?
How many more Iraqi Civilians wounded? 1.5 Million?
How many more Iraqi's will be displayed from their homes? 50,000/month? 6 Million?
Will there be any Iraqi's left to GOVERN or be GOVERNED when we "WIN" and establish a DEMOCRATIC IRAQ?
Dear Nuanced,
I don't buy it. If they believe the lies, well they're just really slow.

If they don't, then they consider mass murder a political game.

It's sad either way.

So, tellme. Have we found bin Laden al Zwahiri and Mullah Omar? Have we found the person(s) behind the anthrax mailings? Inquiring minds want to know.
Or should I say, ask me no qestions and I'll tell you no lies?
What tangled webs we weave
George- We should hire 'no bid' companies in, say, Texas to provide the goodies for the invasion of DC, right?

I would like to remind everyone that most countries were born out of civil war.  To a large degree thats what is happening in Iraq now.  Though there is no dought that in the past 2 months there has been a major sea change on the groud in Iraq. Mostly due to local iraquis standing up to insurgency.  The political will is allways going to be behind the curve.  Maybe we can stimulate some think tanks to come up with a withdrawal that is timely, measured and logistical.  It is politically irresponsible to give Iran a free hand, especailly since they don't deserve it and probablly don't know what to do with it.
