Other Dems pile on Hillary's comment

From NBC's Mark Murray
-- "Senator Clinton’s remarks are deeply troubling," said Edwards communications director Chris Kofinis in a statement. "After nearly seven years of George Bush and the politics of fear, the American people deserve a President who will focus first on keeping America safe, rather than calculating the political consequences. Unfortunately, Senator Clinton is seemingly taking a page straight from the GOP playbook that got us into this mess -- using fear of another terror attack as a political tactic to bolster her candidacy, and that is just wrong.”

-- "We shouldn't be thinking about terrorism in terms of its domestic political consequences, we should be protecting the country from terrorists," said Richardson in a statement. "Senator Clinton seems to think that President Bush has made this country safer. I disagree with her. Our failed policy in Iraq is making us less safe."

Another big nothing. So what. She can't talk about terrorists now?
Dems are having one of their daily conniption fits. "She's not using the same playbook as the rest of us!!  She's, she's  . . different!!  We are all supposed to be the same!!"

Man these Democrats are a jumpy bunch.
why hasn't anyone in the media noticed that Hillary flip flopped again.
she said she does not engage in hypotheticals when she was trying to make Obama look bad and yet, her terror attack senario is a hypothetical.
Guess the media is covering for her again.
I also noticed no one on the tv news outlets could take the time to talk about Zbig endorsing Obama.
the biggest name in foreign policy endorsed obama and zip.
I suppose this stuff is only reserved for her highness.
We have nothing to fear but the fear mongerers themselves.

In all seriousness, I think this was another political mistake by the Clinton campaign. I'm sure her supporters will disagree. So in pre-emptive response, I'll just say - like every other argument here, we'll see.
Thi story has legs!  Hillary clearly just made a big gaffe.  I thought she did well in the debates, but now I see her using fear as a political tactic!  People should soon see Obama has the neccesary experience.  His judgement has been spot on.
<Patriotic music plays -  Fade to Hillary giving a speech>

"I oppose things I now see are working.  But even though they are working, I'm still opposed to them, even though I've always been sort of for them, and I did vote for them, before I voted against them. I will vote for them again though, even though I'm against them, but I'll deny saying so, unless they work.  Then I will be for them again, but I could then late vote against them."

<Increase music volumn - fade to black>

Voice over:

"Hillary Clinton - a straight talker."

This ad paid for by the Hillary Clinton campaign for President, unless it offends you, in which case, it wasn't.
Osama Bin Forgotten.
Apparantly, neither Gov. Richardson nor Sen. Edwards do nuance.
Their straw dog arguments are so Roveian.
"Senator Clinton seems to think that President Bush has made this country safer. I disagree with her. Our failed policy in Iraq is making us less safe."

Uh, Bill, is that what she said?  An old saying comes to mind.  Much Ado about nothing.
I think Hillary is smart. She is speaking to the more moderate faction of The Democratic, Republican and independent voters. She knows that the "cocoos" from the far left have no other choice than to vote for her, and she therefore very smartley , is playing the political game..Nevertheless, as moderate as I am, I won't vote for her because I do not trust her. She like her husband (voted for him the second time) do not stand by principles but do things based on polls .And as some what said " everybody lies but they lie with such ease... I need a President that I can trust that will tell us the truth..She is no better than Bush...
Their getting "desperate".  hillaryclinton.com
What a crock! Come on John and Team lets aim all the guns at shrub and the despicable job they are doing. Don't start with the back ass swipes at Senator Clinton. We need to go after the repukes who will keep us in Iraq forever with  pink, yellow, red, alert fear mongering they foster.
You can not even imagine the ire waiting for any Dem that tries to smear  with  heinous shrub actions.
Do not sink to that level of scum, taking words out of context and twisting them to your sad desperate level.
You can  pick up the repukes venom and bring yourselves down to the gutter where they clog the sewers. You can shame your family or make them proud.
John Edwards do not go there.
The Rabid Leftists' favorite tool?  A screwdriver, of course, as they twist, screw, stab, and perforate one another in the self-immolating quest toward oblivion. We offer an endless supply of these fine instruments to our quisling friends in their sacrificial spiral.
Hey Billy Bob lookie here...hillaryclinton.com
Clinton nailed it. the GOP will use a terror strike for more fear and panic.
What's wrong with the other canidates? Don't they know what the hell the GOP has been doing for almost 6 years?

Geesh!
Hillary seems like an attractant for "attacks."  Even when other candidates make innocuous comments, they're taken as potential digs on her.  And when there is a real criticism, it's a "pile-on."  If she's this much of a target in the primaries, wouldn't she be even more vulnerable in the general election?  How does she hope to get her message (whatever it is) out if everything is portrayed as an attack-counterattack?
this just shows my theory that the clintons and the bushs are in love with eachother and secretly support each others agenda.
Agree.  I guess it's okay for Hillary to speak to hypotheticals but no other presidential candidate should otherwise you'll come across as "naive" and "irresponsible".  Hillary is no different than Rudy who basically stated the same "fear" tactic of another terrorist attack.  I wonder if Keith Olberman (sp?) will come down on her ---NOT.
This is the first indication to me that Mrs Clinton is probably feeling that she might not be 'their girl'. Whenever a politician start using the 'fear card', it is a sign of desperation. Nat'l polls be damn( she is feeling the pressure internally). Reasons not to vote for HRC:
1) she will drag down other Dem candidates in various states.
2) no more dynasties, pls
3) no more DLC/RNC battling each other w/ either side receiving a mere 50+1 % of the vote.
In a climate such as this, we need for the Dems to win w/ at least 60-65% of the vote. Candidates who 'inspiring' ppl usually do this. Mrs Clinton is not inspiring. Prior to the 2004 primary, i called in on C-Span and begged Dems not to nominate Kerry because i saw the possible loss coming a mile away. There was a lot of stuff out there about Kerry that made me make that appeal. I see the same thing here w/ Mrs Clinton. Even ppl like myself who do not hate her or her husband remember how BClinton's last years in office distracted my state's Dem representratives from doing the job that we sent them to do in DC. Gridlock was an understatement. I do not want my congressman/woman spending their legislative time defending any President's conduct like that ever again. I know Mrs Clinton is not her husband (still i do not want to hear any more crap like what went on during the late 90's). The words Monica/Vince Foster/Travelgate/Whitewater/stained dress/ bimbo eruption/Ken Starr/triangulation/vast right-wing conspiracy/what is 'is'  are terms that i want deleted from the American discussion. I want Fox News to slowly wither on the vine. Do not want a do-over of the Clinton/right-wing battle. This country needs to move on already.
9-11 got spun into it being everyone elses fault but the real person responsible for making our nation safe from harm. The buck stops at only one place when it comes to National Security.
If we get attacked again- it will be his fault again. I mean lets see- 911 attack happens - how come if we are under attack and have to remail vigilant and we are at war etc etc ad nauseum- how come the border is wie open and the ports security is underfunded? If they are out to get us so bad?

Real question is- how come you yellow journalists keep letting them sidetrack you with bullshit and not get those basic, essential questions answered with no spin.
Ask the President to champion a law that forbids rubble containing forensic data from being shipped out of the USA to the deepest part of the Atlantic in the future. Ask the President to actually protect us from God knows who is coming across all of our borders.
Stop collecting a check for doing nothing. you journalists should look up footage of Walter Cronkite and Ed Murrow and stop being mealy mouthed spineless cowards and you might get a bit more recognition and people might read your columns etc..
As it is why bother? Its all the same as Entertainment Tonite or People Magazine caliber. Very few decent journalist today- all of you have degrees and great school credentials but you are basically useless cowards.
Only place to be able to say that I saw Chuck Todd on Russert tonight.
Nice performance.  You and Cilizza were great.
very insightful
Alberto Gonzalez del Valle--
"...Nevertheless, as moderate as I am, I won't vote for her..."

Alberto's statement perfectly illustrates the problem with a Clinton Candidacy in the General election.
It can't be won without the center.
The other campaigns are getting desparate - Hillary is far ahead and is strong enough to beat the GOP in 08!
Hilary’s political mantra is “ready to lead”, and by implication, her indisputable wealth of experience. But that indisputable wealth of experience is being called to question. Professor Brzezinski has driven stake through the heart and soul of such argument. Besides such pretensions, what else is there in Hilary campaign’s armory? Hence, Hilary is now taking the obvious route; which is fear mongering campaign.

When Professor Brzezinski speaks on foreign policy, political establishments listen. Since the 60’s to date, Professor Brzezinski has played principal roles in laying US foreign policies. In hide-sight, to have questioned Obama’s experience in foreign policies was a huge mistake. If Hilary knew better, she would have remained mentioning as subtexts rather than being very direct. Now that she is contradicted by a super-powerful force in the Democrat political power base, what next can she throw up except to descend to level of human base political instincts of fear? Hence, the sobriquet “Bush-Cheney lite” sticks like glue and pregnant with indeterminate outcome.
Hillary has it all ocked up, she is the most qualified running for President. She says what she thinks and I applaud her for that. Forget the wishy washy we get from Bush-Cheney and his just retired monkey Rove. Bush is surrounded with losers, Cheney, Rice, Gonzales etc. Give them HELL Hillary, give Bill an occassional blo job and we'll see Washington and the United States Of America shine and have friends throughout the world rather than this mess we now have in the White House.
cant everyone see that hilary is just another neocon....only she is a dem neocon...same as levin and feinstein.
If the world only knew their corruption in Arkansas when he was in office...Yet not a word...I wonder why...
Its all a conspiracy.
The difference between the Us and Europe, is that Europe isnt affraid of their governments. Their governments are afraid of the people.
her wrong assumption is that the center is toward bush and to the right. that's not where the center is. that's what john warner finally figured out. the center is to hillary's left. left of her repeated votes endorsing this war that she refuses to acknowledge as such. her attitude about her war votes is like someone who hides something with everyone watching and still thinks no one can find it. i know the center is not over with kucinich for immediate exit; but it is somewhere between hilary and kucinich. especially after big hil  and the auto industry senator levin were lectured like children by maliki.
## Do not sink to that level of scum

For the Democrats to get to that level of scum, they'll need to move up a few notches on the food chain.
If as Hilary Clinton states "So I think I'm the best of the Democrats to deal with that as well" then America truly is in serious trouble. To vote for Hilary Clinton would be the worst mistake any reasonably conscious individual could ever perpetuate upon him/her self while bring America to further demise. Only a fool would believe as Hilary says, "It's a horrible prospect to ask yourself 'What if? What if?' But if certain things happen between now and the election, particularly with respect to terrorism, that will automatically give the Republicans an advantage again, no matter how badly they have mishandled it, no matter how much more dangerous they have made the world," when Hilary as did so many other Democrats, she voted for the war in Iraq and against taking a stance against illegal immigrants as well as other domestic issues that would have benefited American. To place sole blame on the Republicans is merely a demonstration of the democrats’ lack of an agenda and Hilary Clinton’s arrogances and lack of respect for the America people.
Obama’s campaign is getter worse the further along it get using God in the manner Obama has. Hypocrisy to get votes is the lowest any candidate can get and Obama is there! However, he is right quoting and yet he does not demonstrate the love of Christ accompanying those words: "He said, whoever hears these sayings of mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on a rock." "The rains descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house. But it did not fall, because it was founded on the rock," However, is Obama mindful of the totality of the teachings of Jesus as Paul reminds all of and found in 2 Timothy 3 when he openly supports homosexuality wherein Jesus does love the sinner but in no uncertain terms hates the sin that Obama and the church he attends has openly supported? Obama needs to with prayer and fasting truly study the Sermon on the Mount before attempting to use God ever again for his only agenda; only a hypocrite would do such a thing.
Wow, so   its the Republicans that are behind the terrorists? - This is why I hate politics and those who make it their own fanatical religion... Get a life. Who cares what Hillary says - what she does speaks for itself - watche her voting record - thats all that matters.
Hillary is right but for the wrong reasoning. There will be another serious terrorist attack but only if a Democrat is elected President and the Dems continue to control both houses of congress. Our mortal enemies know that to defeat the U.S. they only need to cower the Democrats, particularly the leftist wing of the party. Terrorists are diligent historians and remember Vietnam, the Carter Iran debacle and Clinton pulling out of Mogadishu after our Army killed or wounded an estimated 5500 warlord troops the same day we lost 18 precious americans . Ben Laden knows that there is a substantial and very vocal portion of the Democrat party that will not raise a finger to defend their country under any circumsatnces. Ben Laden is banking on an Obama or Edwards to be elected before he plays his trump card.
Make no mistake, Hillary's first assault will not be on terrorism, but rather upon the American People, the Constituion, and the Bill of Rights.

If Hillary thinks this is just a stumble, wait until 2008.  People will soon realize that she is not the best candidate for president.
I have to admit that I'm SO tired of all this parsing.

I am not a Clinton supporter but I do agree with what she said. We, as a nation, do not like to change horses in battle. If an "event" does occur, the public will have this tendency to want to "stay the course". If Mr. Bush was running for another term, this would be even more apparent. However, since we have to change presidents anyway, the importatnt consideration will be do we change parties? That is all Ms. Clinton was saying along with selling herself as strong enough to handle such and "event".

I did not see or hear any fear mongering in her talk at all. I heard pragmatic politics. I don't particularly like her. I've said many times on this blog that I think the general election will prove tough for her to win.

However, the more "news" reporting on this kind of drivel isn't helping at all. I also think Mr. Edwards did what he could when asked the question.

We, as the public, should be asking the HARD questions for each candidate regardless of party: 1) What is the "real" plan for reducing our presence in Iraq. 2) What is the "real" plan for dealing with Iran. 3) Did you agree with Libby's sentence commutation? 4) How will you use "signing statements"? 5) How will you deal with China's hold over our trade deficit? 6) How will you ensure that we actually have the money to pay for the abyss that is Iraq?

Come on, MSM, do the work!!
Hey, Hillary, over there sits your "target" - leadership of the free world.  Here's the thing: that 'schmedrick' with the trunk keeps lookin' this way; and those guys with the long ears? They've got political 'guns'. But you gotta do what you gotta do.
Go for it, baby!
"Make no mistake, Hillary's first assault will not be on terrorism, but rather upon the American People, the Constituion, and the Bill of Rights.

Where have YOU been the past 61/2 years?

Van
R. H. Goetz, Sr. Chicago, Illinois (Sent Monday, August 27"

Any Democrat elected will have to devote a substantial part of their time in office to repairing the damage done by this Administration. Someone left the fox in charge of the hen house.
Senator Clinton is just saying what other people are thinking.  This White House is so corrupt and evil, I can see them letting that happen just like they raise the terrorist alert level when congress gets to close to their shaddy dealings.
Independent -

I completely agree with you.  In fact, I said something similar on Friday.  Whoever is in charge during a disaster, be it natural or man-made, gets a bump in the polls.  It's what happened to Bush right after 9-11 - his approval ratings went through the roof after 9-11.  And what did he really do that any other president wouldn't have done as well?  I don't think anything, personally.

Anyway, as I said, I agree with your assessment.  Nice post.  :)
Boy the desperate repukes are really reaching.  Grasping at straws, every day they think they have snaged a great new swiftboating item.  They get so excited and mean and whiney! Never any true garbage,
so they twist and rephrase.
WE are only afraid of the terror from the WH.
paul whelton,  thats pretty funny!  Is that like Reagan pulling out of Lebanon because of a suicide bomber?  Is that like George Herbert Bush pulling out of Iraq without getting rid of Saddam?  You have a selective memory!
