Behind Gonzales' resignation

Posted: Monday, August 27, 2007 10:17 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Pete Williams and Domenico Montanaro
A senior administration official says Gonzales' resignation was entirely his own decision. The official says Gonzales sent a letter to the president on Friday stating his intention to step down by mid-September but that the president did not accept it and instead invited Gonzales to Texas to talk about it.

Gonzales and his wife went to Crawford. The president and Gonzales talked Sunday and the president accepted, reluctantly, the official said.

Solicitor General Paul Clement will become acting attorney general once Gonzales is gone.

Here are the reactions from presidential candidates we’ve heard so far:

BROWNBACK: Said on MSNBC that Gonzales’ resignation is “long overdue.” Easy to say now. Brownback never called for Gonzales’ resignation prior to today.

EDWARDS: “Better late than never.”

OBAMA: "I have long believed that Alberto Gonzales subverted justice to promote a political agenda, and so I am pleased that he has finally resigned today. The President needs to nominate an Attorney General who will be the people's lawyer, not the President's lawyer, and in an Obama Administration that person will first and foremost defend and promote the rights and liberties enshrined in our Constitution," said Obama.

RICHARDSON: "The resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is long overdue. The President must nominate an Attorney General who is a lawyer for the American people not a political arm of the White House."

VIDEO: Richardson is asked why he said he was delaying his decision on whether Alberto Gonzales should be fired.

Richardson, though, was the last major Democratic presidential candidate to call for Gonzales’ resignation. He said he it took him a while to make up his mind because Gonzales is a fellow Hispanic -- a response that drew criticism.

From the MSNBC Democratic debate earlier this year:
BRIAN WILLIAMS: Governor Richardson, you were one of the last people on this stage to call for the resignation of the attorney general, Attorney General Gonzales. When asked by a journalist why you were taking long to make up your mind about this, you replied, quote, "It's because he's Hispanic. I'm honest."
Is that the right way to make personnel decisions?

RICHARDSON: That's how I felt.
Now, what I said, too, Brian, was that I wanted to await Alberto Gonzales's testimony before the U.S. Senate, before the Senate Judiciary Committee. He hadn't had a chance to fully explain why, number one, he'd politicized the Justice Department; number two, why he indiscriminately fired U.S. attorneys, including one in New Mexico who was just doing his job and was being pushed to have some political indictments; and third, why is it that, as attorney general, he did not -- he did not act as the lawyer for the American people rather than as the lawyer and political adviser to the White House, staff and the president.

So, yeah, you know, he's -- came from nothing. I know the guy. Did it affect that he was Hispanic in what I said? Yeah, it did, and I said so. I think the American people want candor. They don't want blow- dried candidates with perfection. That was the reason I held back. I did call for his resignation. Maybe I was last, but I wanted to give him a chance to explain his position. He didn't do it, and I called for his resignation. (MSNBC debate, 4/26/07)

****UPDATE****DODD: "Mr. Gonzales' Justice Department became a political wing of the Bush Administration and his resignation is long overdue. I will only vote to confirm a nominee for Attorney General who is truly independent and who will guarantee reforms that restore and uphold the Constitution."

****UPDATE 2****BIDEN: "As I've said before, Attorney General Gonzales has lost the confidence of the vast majority of the American people and the Congress.  His resignation is long overdue. When I voted against Attorney General Gonzales' confirmation, I voiced concern about his ability to go from being the President's lawyer to the people's lawyer. I expressed doubts then about his judgment in light of his track record, and role as an architect of policies attempting to place the President above the law. My skepticism was confirmed by his conduct, and his failure to put protecting the American people over protecting the President.  The next Attorney General should not make the same mistake."

****UPDATE 3****CLINTON: The New York senator has not released a statement, but during the LIVESTRONG forum, MSNBC's Chris Matthews brought up the topic. She applauded with the audience when Matthews said Gonzales had resigned and added, "The next attorney general should care about rule of law more than he protects the president."

****UPDATE 4****CLINTON: Just in... Clinton's statement: "This resignation is long overdue, and so is the appointment of an Attorney General who will put the rule of law and our Constitution above partisan politics. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales took an oath to uphold our Constitution and respect the rule of law, but time and time again, he demonstrated that his loyalties lie with the President and his political agenda, not the American people or the evenhanded and impartial enforcement of our laws. In his actions and inaction, from warantless wiretaps to the firing of U.S. Attorneys, his loyalty was to the President, not the American people. The Department's hardworking lawyers, law enforcement officers, and staff are trusted to defend our Constitution, not one Administration or political party. That trust is central to the sanctity of the rule of law and the vitality of our democracy. Because he betrayed his obligations and the trust of the American people, I welcome today's announcement that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has resigned his post as Attorney General of the United States.

"My hope is that the President will select a new Attorney General who will respect the rule of law and abandon partisanship, who will serve the American people and not the President's political ideology, and who will answer to the Constitution and not political operatives. It is past time to clean up this mess and restore non-partisan accountability and competence to the Department of Justice."

Congratulations, Z !!
Gonzo is gone !!
Now, let's have some honest testimony, Gonzo !!
Just watched the "official" statement from Gonzales re his resignation. Very good statement. Wish I could feel that it was true. I thought he might break into tears at any moment.

He grabbed his notes and left the lectern almost before the last echo of his words faded.

There was no one there with him. Contrast this with Rove's resignation where Bush was the one almost in tears and was virtually hanging onto Rove.

In addition, I posted earlier today that I think we have the attornies in the Dept of Just Us to thank for this. I'd been hearing rumours that a rash of threatened resignations along with threats to go public about the chaos in the department was barreling down on Mr. Gonzalez.

I don't think that political pressure was the final push.

Have to wonder who will be put in this position now. My stomach clenches when I think of the candidates that are being floated as replacements.
FAREWELL TO GONZO. ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST.BUY, BUY
why is there no response from presidential candidate Ron Paul...I would like to know what he has to say about this decision
I cant help but think Gonzales is being used as a 'patsy'.  "once upon a time" I thought the BUSH adm. was the answer to our Middle East woes.  OH, was I wrong!  And they (people) thought it was a scandel what Clinton did.  Something is very wrong with this picture!  Anything that comes out of Bush's mouth is to be thourghly questioned.
So he FINALLY, though BELATEDLY, does the "Gonzo shuffle"? View my choice for successor:

I finally like Gonzales.
He finally got it right.
"If he thinks this will keep him out of a war crimes tribunal, he's in for a big surprise..."     -anon
Attorney Generals job is a hard one.Everyone tries to play politics with it. You have congressmen who are not lawyers who try to second guess his decisions. It does not matter what side of the party he's on, the other side plays games. Its needs to be an elected position than we would know for sure its all politics. Our system is going down hill all the time, you never know what is right or wrong. Congress have no right or wrongs any more. Its all politics. Congress changes their minds like a coin flip. You have to listen to them each day to know where they stand. You really wonder what kind of government we will have in 100 years from now.

Just another on of his cronies that was loyal to Bush and not the country. Justice has seen the worst in his tenure. When will these PUBLIC official get it that they are to work for the PEOPLE and not just one person (Bush). Another one of Karl Rowe's legacy issues.
Will the Department of Justice have a tearful farewell party for him same as DOD had for Rumsfeld?
Thanks Sierra ! I think they all will be heading to the clinker, but it's going to take alot of time. More likely into the next administration.
Yes--it is far past time for the administration to be working for the AMERICAN PEOPLE. And not just because they are Hispanic either, feel that is to obtain their voting power.
This administraation has been so corupt that all Americans are feeling the effect. Send Bush back to Crawford.
It's too bad that he resigned. I wish he could remain- pretty much powerless and like a permanent visible stain, a scarlet letter, a stigmata reminding the country constantly of the travesty that is the Bush administration.
Maybe now Cheneys evil black heart will burst and then we can impeach Bush. Then, Condi can run off with Lynn Cheney, and Laura Bush can dump George, and dems will take over the oval office, and everyone will live happily ever after.
ROVE'S GONE, GONZO'S GONE,........WHO IS GOING TO PROP UP THAT PUPPET UP THERE?
Gonz left? Probably cuz John Ashcroft threatened to whoop his ass for lying about his bedside visit.
It sure did take a long time; a period of time during which many illegal and destructive things were done by this administration.  Mr. bush sure is finding things a bit lonely lately.

More evidence that voting is critically important.  Criminals.
I remember coming to work the day after the last election and my GOP buddies saying to me well nick it looks like your side did it. I said back to him and everyone who was in ear shot that " the president has to fire RUMMIE before the day is out". I know all of those guys thought i don't know what i'm talking about. I went to lunch and turned on my radio and i laughed out loud because there was the president firing rummie. when i returned to my desk at work my doughter called me from temple u. to say dad you were right. i told her before we left for school and work the same thing i told the guys at work. one of the guys asked me how i knew. i didn't but i knew it was the right thing to do. the rats are jumping ship big time. Rove was next, now Gonzo, next will be rice and then d.c. will follow with some kind of medical excuse.
to be honest i am not so happy today to hear gonzo quit because it means our whole goverment is going down and it's a very uneasy feeling. everything this president has done has gone to hell. we are in deep trouble because as much as i did not like all the president's men, the pres has no one now!!!!!
good luck america
Now that there is BLOOD IN THE WATER don't expect the sharks to chomp kindly.  I sure hope they nominate Chertoff 4 the job;  perhaps we will be able to learn more about FBI operation  Diamondback that he torpedoed and his links with 911 and more particularly---the financing of 911.  We still do not know all Nixon crimes, mostly his crimes in which Democrats were the victims.
IT'S ABOUT TIME HE REALIZED ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
Let's play "What's Next?"
(a) Gonzo will be given a big award by George of Arabia,
(b) We will then hear a "great job Al"
(c) George of Arabia will pardon Gonzo just before the "end of an error" in January 2009
The President has not been playing with a full deck, and even now his house of cards has almost entirely collapsed.  The next big thing is for Speaker Pelosi to put impeachment back on the table.
But how will we undo all of the destruction to this country and the world that has been a result of this Administration's arrogance and foolishness?
my comment has to do with our miners'in Utah/why can't there be a tracking device attached to miners who go deep beneath the earth? We track spaceships,we track cars and criminals...why are we not tracking our workers who rish their lives?C
http://bvwatson.com/GoodGov/2007/08/on_alberto_gonzales_resignatio.html

The significant question is not who will replace him, but how the Senate decides. See this blog (above) for a first run at the minimal criteria for accepting the next AG nominee.
and so another bites the dust, falls on the sword, bites the bullet etc on behalf of georgie porgie's administration ...glad to see gonzales was dogged until his pen to paper was forced; however, this DOES NOT alleviate my frustration with this white house ..so many men, so little time ..arrgggghhhhh!!
I, too, wonder what prompted Gonzo to quit.  It couldn't have been that he didn't have cover from the Prez, he even invited him to Texas to assure him he'd never do time, so stay the course, Al.  I tend to agree that it was probably a soon-to-hit-the-fan revolt by most of the personel at DoJ and the terrible things that would reveal about Gonzo's incompetence that made him quit---no one likes to appear a fool in public, and it may have been this that got to him, rather than the non-existent threat of jail time.
For whatever reason, the country is well-served by his leaving.
Good Riddance, but this shouldn't end the investigation into the White House's role
Susan, Miami, If Condi and Lynn Cheney get together, do you think they might have a kid together? We would have another Dick running around!
Maybe he wants to spend more time with his family before he goes to jail for lying under oath to Congress.
Gonzo is GoneZO! The gang is leaving because it would look bad for Bush to pardon his people while they are still working for him.
The sad part about this whole fiasco is it was so avoidable with a bit of common sense.  Just 'fess up that the firings were political, do a mea culpa and move on.  Instead, Gonzalez and all of his people look like idiots for apparently having no knowledge at all of what was going on inside their own agency.

No doubt, the administration will now use this resignation as a reason to try and sweep the rest of the hearings all under the rug.  If they had two brain cells between the lot of them, they'd offer the AG position to James Comey.  He had more honesty and common sense in his testimony to the Senate over this whole thing than anyone else I'd seen.
Finally, Gonzales goes home, on his own accord ? yeah right, it's about time he got the message.
Does "rats" and "sinking ship" come to mind?

Good Q raised elsewhere is whether The Shrub can make a quickie "interim appointment" and name some idiot like Chertoff.
Another one bites the dust, and another one's gone, and another one's gone...
What's next?  Shrub gives him the Presidential Medal fo Freedom or something.  He always rewards the screw-ups in his operation.  He could learn a lesson from China, maybe...instead of encouraging screw-ups, they shoot them.  No such luck here, though...
Bush is probably desperately looking around to find someone Congress will accept who, at the same time, won't be honest enough to blow the whistle on the evil oozing from the White House and poisoning the body politic.
I WONDER WHY SHRUB THREW GONZO UNDER THE BUS?  JUST MAYBE CHENEY HAS THE GOODS ON SHRUB AND HE IS NEXT UNDER THE BUS. NOW WHAT DOES THE CHEN HAVE ON SHRUB??
REMEMBER HOW THEY KEPT REAGANS ALZHEIMERS A SECRET...MAYBE??
The firing of federal attorneys was not just an act of political indiscretion.  It was an attempt to influence the prosecution of cases in order to alter the outcome of elections.  This may be considered a fine point by some but others acknowledge it as an act of politicization of the DOJ (I think I smell a Rove).  I am not familiar enough with Constitutional law to say whether or not it was illegal but the malfeasance certainly goes beyond the concept of a cover-up.  The ethical considerations (or lack thereof) have demoralized the DOJ and should have been grounds enough for the dismissal of Gonzalez.  To turn the DOJ into a political arm of the White House reeks of a subversion of democracy that is suggestive of the Soviet Politboro or Nazi Germany.  This is a frightening thought and all of us (Republicans and Democrats) should be outraged.  This presidency has been such a disaster and not only because of the direct result of its actions (or inactions, as the case may be) but in the way that it has tried to establish an imperial presidency, an effort that makes Richard Nixon's attempt pale by comparison.
I think that we, the people, may finally be winning in the quest to take the country back.  Somehow, though, it ain't over till it's over and I worry that the power elite and their ministry of truth (Minitruth) may yet pull some tricks out of their hat.  Citizens be alert to the colors.
I normally don't care for Mondays(Who Does?), but yesterday was FANTASTIC because of Gonzo. I just hope that the congress keeps up the pressure to find out just what this administration(including Gonzo, Rove, Miers, Rumsy)has done that is cause for prosecution.
