Clinton at the Armstrong forum

Posted: Monday, August 27, 2007 2:47 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
Clinton was the first presidential candidate to speak at the LIVESTRONG presidential cancer forum, moderated by Lance Armstrong and MSNBC's Chris Matthews. Clinton, Edwards, Richardson, and Kucinich were the only Democrats who attended the forum today -- and Brownback and Huckabee are the only two to attend the Republican forum tomorrow. As he did on Meet the Press yesterday, Armstrong expressed his disappointment that other candidates chose not to attend. "It is my belief, like a lot of other Americans, that the next occupant of the Oval Office must discuss this critical issue with voters," Armstrong said at the beginning of the forum.

VIDEO: Hillary Clinton tells the Livestrong forum the Bush administration has waged a war against science and research.

Matthews asked Clinton about this during her first question -- bringing up Giuliani, McCain, and Obama, all who have a close connection to cancer but didn't attend. Clinton did not attack either Obama or any of her potential GOP opponents, but instead promised to renew Nixon's "war on cancer," making it one of her "big goals." She  brought up her universal health-care plan (which she will reportedly unveil next month) several times, tying it in to her war on cancer answer. "The big goal of the war against cancer has to be fit into the absolute essential goal of quality affordable health care, universal health care for every single American," Clinton said. "You cannot do one without the other, and we need to do both, and I intend to."

Clinton earned her largest applause for calling an end to President Bush's "war against science." "The president of the United States has been leading an assault on science and research," she said. "The two priorities of this president have been the war in Iraq and tax cuts for the wealthy -- neither of which he's paid for, while he has cut the budget for the National Institute of Health and the National Cancer Institute. At the same time, he has prevented a very strong majority in the Congress and the country from proceeding in an ethical way with stem cell research, which I think holds out promise for certain forms of cancer, and has muzzled government scientists, closed down government websites, refused to allow this country to continue in our governmental capacity -- this inquiry, this freedom of thought, that has made this a great country for so many years."

When asked if she agrees with a national ban on smoking, Clinton said yes, but she did not call for federal regulation. Rather, she said localities, counties, and states should ban smoking in public places. Yet she did say that the Food and Drug Administration should regulate tobacco, calling it an "addictive deadly substance."

Of note, Clinton referred several times to her nine-point plan to win the war against cancer, but she never articulated the nine steps.

Is it possible to have "initiatives" or "programs" or just plain "goals"? Does everything have to be labeled a "war"?
Hillary Clinton will release her heath plan and she will be destroyed like she was in 1994 and brought the republicans to power.  Deja Vu all over again?  Could be!
I hope Barak has stopped smoking completely to set a good example for our youth.  I am appalled at how many young girls, especially mothers, I see smoking everywhere I go.
Hillary Rodham is an idealist.
I remember watching her and listening to her when as First Lady she took on the insurance companies over her plan for health care.  And I remember listening to her talk about how much she learned in the process.
I also remember the grace with which she managed the matter of Monica Lewinsky.
She's a strong woman.
And she's controversial.
But make no mistake about it.  She's no pushover.
She has principles, and in my opinion, she stands by them.
If she says she has a plan to fight cancer, I believe her until I learn otherwise.
Whether she becomes President or not, she impresses me with her strength and her integrity.
For my money, she'd make a good President.
Every voter should take note of any candidate that did not think it was important to show up for the cancer forum.  If they didn't think it was important enough to show up and answer questions they certainly will not do anything to change how cancer affects us or how we can deal with cancer.

I am a Democrate and will not vote for Obama, Bieden or Dodd because of this.  Cancer is just tooooo important.
Is there any initiative for Clinton that does not fall into the neat "x-point plan?" It gets tiresome.
Then Obama jumped in, and said he'd have a 'War on Wars'.

At which point Kucinich stood up (how anyone could tell is still a mystery) and said he'll have a 'War of the Worlds' so he could stop the pending Martain attack.

James W. Procopio, Pottsville, PA / sorry chief but no one should accuse hillary of having integrity, slurping at the lobbyist trough and continually flip-flopping on the issue of the day pretty much shows hillary's integrity, give me a break
One thing is for sure, Hillary is on the side of American people.

With 35 years of fighting for ordinary people, she has my vote. She understand the issues and have experience and determination to get things done.
Yeh James tommorrow when she speaks to the Tobacco Lobbyist she'll "sing a different song".  Just like she did when she spoke to the VFW

For HRC its all about who she is speaking to at the time.
Just go listen to the vidio above. hillaryclinton.com    "for real change"
Hillary says: "Vote for me before this Botox wears out and my face completely falls off".
In fairness to Hillary Lance pointed out that Nixon declared war on cancer in 1970 (or 72) so the use of war wasn't Hillary's term, but an adaptation of it.

Hillary is a strong women, and she would be a fine President, but her chances of winning the general are slim to none. But most importantly, she is not the best Democratic candidate. Why support Hillary over a more qualified candidate?
There is a reason the private sector spends 100s of billions on cancer research and the Federal Gov't only spends $6 billion.  The private sector has a huge payoff to solve problems.

The government just wants more power and hasn't solved any problem ever.

Cancer afects our nation, but it is not a national problem, it is a people problem that we really need to keep the government out of.

No government program saved Lance Armstrong--
My mother died of cancer.  There were treatments that might have given her more time, but there wasn't enough money.  The rich can buy time.

At least if Hillary is President, I know there will be something more to help - whether it me or someone else.

Hillary knows what she is doing.  I put my faith in her.  We will finally have a President who will leave us better off for having known her.
Ditto!

Don't understand why Obama didn't go, or maybe I do.  Instead he chose to go to New Orleans ahead of other candidates going there for the anniversary of the devastation by Katrina.

I guess he wanted questionable political cover by saying he had a prior commitment, even though he could have arrived later with everyone else. It might have been pretty hard for a smoker to be very convincing on his commitment towards cancer as a priority if it wasn't even a personal priority with him.  He was clever enough to know this issue would be raised.
Obama was busy remembering the worst natural disaster in American history. Perhaps a bit more important than a forum spewing more false promises?
Why is the federal government responsible for cancer? This is one of many things that can be done better by the private sector.
Cancer is not the major issues on this campaign, where does Iraq, Education, and Poverty rank? If candidate keeps pandering to all dick and harry forum then they might as well talk their way to the white house.

The most important thing is where they stand on issues, policies they will pursue if elected, and what their values are as a person.

Personally i think candidates don't need to speak in all forum and shouldn't pander to any special interest. If we invested $12 billion in cancer research, would other diseases get the same funding?

Cancer is one of the killer disease in America but it is not the number one killer. In my opinion, all killer disease funding should be subjected to TRIAGE.
Are all these Hillary supporters who hate and won't vote for the other Democrats really Democrats or is this a Republican dirty trick. Ditto for the rabid anti-Hillary people.
According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette Obama was spending the day home with his family. He did not claim he had a prior commitment.

Brilliant critique, and very appropriate to the seriousness of the topic. You should be proud of yourself. I am sure you have influenced many intelligent thoughtful people who are like you, concerned about the challenges facing our nation in the coming days.

War on Cancer is just meaningless rhetoric. It tells me that we will spend billions of dollars and accomplish nothing in the next decade (see War on Drugs, War on Poverty).
Nuanced: Hillary supporters, just like Dean supporters in 04 (in Iowa many Dean supporters are the one's supporting Hillary)will rally around the nominee. And if Hillary is the nominee most supporters of Obama, Biden Richardson, Edwards et al will support Hillary. The problem lies with the fact a large number of independents will not support her, and if she is the nominee it will bring out the largest recorded GOP turn out. Sadly the likely result is not merely another GOP President, but a realistic possibility of having both chambers go back to the GOP. Hillary supporter's refuse to believe it, and I wish like hell it wouldn't happen, but unfortunately the odds are overwhelmingly in favor that it will.
Hillary Clinton is only for Hillary Clinton.  She could care less about the American people.  SHe barely cares for her own team in Iowa....

www.hillaryproject.com/.../en/story-details/clinton_campaign_volunteer_treated_badly_and_switches_to_obama/ - 44k

She better get her team straightened out real quick.  news like this grows legs on it's own sooner or later.

This is what I gather from several of these posts:

1. Obama used to smoke, so he doesn't care about cancer.

2. The money from the federal government should not - in any way - be spent on trying to save lives if the private sector can do it. (Ever heard of a failed market?)

Why don't we just get rid of HIV/AIDS research funding? Diabetes research funding? Any medical research funding? Social Security? Medicare? Let's just get rid of all the government's responsibilites. Oh wait...I think that was called the Articles of Confederation, and we saw how well that worked out.

3. There are those that will believe that Clinton will do what she can to cure cancer, regardless of whether she tell them her plan. (Sound familiar? Iraq? Mission Accomplished? Last throes? I learned my lesson from Bush)
Irrespective of this meaningless forum, Obama still have my vote
Tom Carrington: 'I am a Democrate and will not vote for Obama, Bieden or Dodd because of this.  Cancer is just tooooo important.'

Hey! Tom Carrington, werern't you voting FOR HILLARY, ANYWAY ??
What if she hadn't attended ?
Would youy have said, I won't vote for anyone who attends ? (pandering to the cancer community ?)
Get real !! If Hillary does it, you're for it .....

John Henry: 'One thing is for sure, Hillary is on the side of American people.'  ??

John Henry, do you mean the 'American people who are lobbyists ? (they're people too) ......

From Fortune magazine: '(Fortune Magazine) -- One of Hillary Clinton's most important courtships began early last year, around a formal dinner table at Georgetown's Four Seasons Hotel. Her targets were Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack and his wife, Christy. Mack was already active politically - but on behalf of Clinton's political opponents. A Bush "Ranger," he had raised at least $200,000 for the President's reelection bid and was one of the most prominent business names on GOP donor lists.'

John Henry: Is THIS one of the American 'people' that Hillary Clinton is on the side of ??
She's courting Bush's biggest supporters !!
Why would Bush's supporters support Hillary ?
Is she gonna sell out Social Security to Wall Street ? Is she gonna bail out predatory lenders ?

THROW THE BUMS OUTS !!
DON'T BRING THE BUMS BACK !!

Obama/Edwards '08
No more dishonest DC insiders !!
What is the plan?  Is the plan workable? How long will it take to implement?  What does the plan require of us besides money?  What does it cost?  What has to be cut in order to provide that amount?  What doesn't get done in order to provide that amount?  What does that amount get us?
Hey Nuanced, I'm pretty much with you.  But it seems to me that Hillary proponents are more prone to be good Democrats and bow to the will of the majority.  I will if need be and not grudgingly.

In defense of Edwards die hards and Obama zealots,  I do believe a good number are actually Repub agents of chaos and dissension since the hate level towards Clinton is the most intense and shrill.  At least I hope they are, as any Democrat is far better than any Repub, any of whom would only extend the blight that is the present evil Kingdom.

The only one who seems to have a shred of integrity, however much I may disagree with many of his views, is Ron Paul in my estimation.  At least he has plausible views on Iraq.

I cannot fathom how anyone who calls themselves a Democrat would not vote in the next election and for a Democrat.  This is probably the most important election of my lifetime and I've been around for a pretty good while.  Hint- I served in the military during the Vietnam fiasco.
"Are all these Hillary supporters who hate and won't vote for the other Democrats really Democrats or is this a Republican dirty trick. Ditto for the rabid anti-Hillary people.

nuanced (Sent Monday, August 27, 2007 5:23 PM)"

Could you direct me to some (one?) of the posts from those, "... Hillary supporters who hate and won't vote for the other Democrats...", as I have never seen one, but as you have, I'd sure like to see who they are so I could set them straight. Any democrat who won't support their party's nominee in the general election, might as well BE from another party.

Van
Van...of course walk in lock step...This is why we view the Hillary campaign as no different from Republicans.

People have free will and should feel free to vote for who they think is the best candidate and if they don't think that is Hillary regardless of whether she is the democratic choice and they are a democrat.

Just as I assume they would hope some Republicans would cross party lines if they found the democrat best represented their feelings and beliefs.

I think is horrible the way you always demean and attack people simply because they don't like Hillary or her policies.  Calling them a "non-democrat" because they would rather vote for someone else seems more like the Republicans to me.

The Hillary supporters seem to think they can bully people into supporting her.  maybe instead of bullying people you should consider getting behind someone more unifying if you really cared about the"PARTY"
Van, I had Tom Carrington and others in mind, not you. I know that real democrats will support the nominee whoever she is. I was referring to those who stated they would not vote for the other democratic candidates.
obama fans... you slam Clinton. Are you all republicans?
Joyce,

Do you consider yourself to be a Democrat?  I don't understand the bullying comment. I don't mind saying I am strongly pro Hillary, as I am strongly pro Democrat.

I think the main point is that in my and many others estimation, any person considering themselves a Democrat should vote for the consensus Democratic nominee in the general election, whoever they might be.

Your post has me guessing.  I really would like to know which Republican candidate is better that any one of the Democrats and why?
John Henry, Houston, TX /"With 35 years of fighting for ordinary people, she has my vote." give me a break, an ordinary person to hillary is someone who clears several million bucks a year, she's never been anything but part of the wealthy elete, not even van can concoct any poll numbers to change that, has anyone else noticed the amount of scripted hillary blather getting posted here lately by one time posters? I suspect you have
Dee,Melissa,Ne / "obama fans... you slam Clinton. Are you all republicans?" do you know how lame that statement is? did van compose that for you? how about this dee, hillary fans... you slam obama. are you republicans, actually dee stated like that it does have some validly since hillary has sold out to the same lobbyists the repub candidates have, back a decent dem candidate, hillary does not deserve your support, look past the mommy parts and pick a candidate for change in america
vanreuter, NY NY --- Brilliant critique, and very appropriate to the seriousness of the topic. You should be proud of yourself. I am sure you have influenced many intelligent thoughtful people who are like you, concerned about the challenges facing our nation in the coming days. ---

Well, thank you van for your heart felt compliments.
I too believe my critique of Ms. Clinton brought the level of discussion up a few notches around the forum.  By looking through your writings, it really isn't much of a chore to do.  You appear to be just another rabid, foaming at the mouth leftist that hates anyone that is different then you.  This is probably why a small attempt at humor is lost on you, as most leftists have been proven time and time again to not have a sense of humor.  You seem more like a reactionary rather then anyone that would be able to hold anything resembling an intelligent conversation.  That is why you fit in so well here, and not so much in the real world.

Also, did Ms. Clinton include Botox treatments in her health care plan?  Just wondering.

and it came down from the mountain, vanreuter, NY NY/ "Brilliant critique, and very appropriate to the seriousness of the topic. You should be proud of yourself. I am sure you have influenced many intelligent thoughtful people who are like you, concerned about the challenges facing our nation in the coming days." van at least it was an honest statement, not pompous condescending blather or prostituted polls numbers, you should try making an honest statement one time, it would be a cleansing experience for you, by the way vanster explain to all us commoner's why hillary is a better candidate than say, john edwards? we await your answer on bent knee o conceited one
obama fans... you slam Clinton. Are you all republicans?

Before I knew that Barack Obama existed, I hated Hillary and I voted for Bill Clinton .... BOTH times ! I know the differnce between the two unlike some.

Next Question
The haters must choke every time they see yet another poll that shows Hillary in the lead.  She is leading in the primary and general election polls.

She will make an excellent president.
Hillary Clinton is the "anti-bush". Smart savvy and articulate. A through planner with a positive message. All you Bush lovers can slam her all you want...she's ten times better than the "Bush-lite" candidates on the GOP side. Hell, Hillary as senator has accomplished more than Bush as president!
Well seirra are you voting??? Are you a Dem or a republican or a jerry(we do not know what sex he/she is)do tell.
My family will vote for any Democrat that wins the primary or caucus----We will not vote for the republican party where it seems everyday another sexual predator, molestor, crooks and liars,NO family values, and corrupt creatures fall off the religous right wagon.
Brainiac what doesnt get done is nine billion a month in Iraq.
Sierra in the general election I will support and contribute to the democratic nominee whether it be hillary, Obama, Edwards or Kucinich.
The cancer message of the forum was to see where the candidates stand on the issue of increasing cancer research. No one can understand that committment unless you have been personally touched by cancer. 1-3 women and 1-2 men will be affected in their lifetime. A National Cancer policy(war) would benefit all.
Sara in Iowa go hug a butter cow. Take the GOP with you so they will be greased for the election. They will be on a slippery slope. I am happy you have it all figured out just how every one will vote a year from now. You is one smart cookie.
Obama is getting attacked for not attending this cancer forum? Are you people this obtuse? All these candidates can't attend every frigging forum.

Get real people.
Obama is getting attacked for not attending this cancer forum? Are you people this obtuse? All these candidates can't attend every frigging forum.

Get real people.
Dee , yes they are all republicans or conservative independents, pretending to be dems. The hatred spewed is quite different from all my dem friends and family, who might want another dem candidate or don't think Hillary can win, but will certainly be voting for her if she gets the nomination. In fact, I have not talked to a dem yet who will not vote or will vote repub if Hillary gets in. Not one, and I am very involved in politics. These folks that hate Hillary are not true dems, believe me.
