Kucinich refers to diet, younger wife

Posted: Monday, August 27, 2007 4:08 PM by Mark Murray

After hearing this, Armstrong interjected. “This has really deteriorated,” he said to crowd applause, adding, “I would just be hungry all the time, I think.”

From NBC's Andrew Merten
Despite the overall serious nature of today’s LIVESTRONG forum, Kucinich had several comedic moments during his turn with moderators Lance Armstrong and Chris Matthews.  After being asked if the Food and Drug Administration is always working in the best interest of the American people, the Ohio congressman lamented the amount of genetically modified food on the market -- using it is an opportunity to tout his own lifestyle choices. “This is why I happen to be a vegan, okay? I know a little bit about this.” Without missing a beat, he added, smiling, “People want a president who is healthy, because if you’re healthy, you can think right.”

The laughs didn’t stop there. Kucinich went on to explain the benefits of his diet, citing increased energy, clarity, and a better quality of life. Matthews went on to insinuate that Kucinich’s new lifestyle may have helped him match up with a younger wife, to which the presidential hopeful added, “I’m 60 years old, I have a -- my wife’s 29, you draw your own conclusions. Diet helps.”

After hearing this, Armstrong interjected. “This has really deteriorated,” he said to crowd applause, adding, “I would just be hungry all the time, I think.”

While Kucinich’s appearance was certainly the most heavy on the laughs, he did continue to bring it back to a serious note by telling of a woman he met in Maine who has accumulated $161,000 in debt while battling cancer. He tied this example into his call for a single-payer health-care system -- touting a bill he has written as “the only one Michael Moore says meets the requirements.”

I'm 62, single and do not need Viagra.
Dennis has given me some ideas!
Dennis is far and away the most, honest, articulate, intelligent and sincere candidate seeking the presidency.  Barak would make a fine VP.
I'm sorry but you Americans really don't like each other do you. How can any society not want the best for it's citizens. To ignore this mess that has been created by your big pharma and the insurance companies is a sin. They lie about our health care here in Canada and because Americans watch it on T.V. the average couch potato believes it. The truth is you folks are being manipulated. This Kucinich seems like a sincere fellow. Someone who could or would actually do something besides fill his own pockets.
Cancer is a human concern, therefore a presidential concern, as is the health of our nation. Bruce, comparing national health care to education, public libraries, roads, and other government projects is an analogy, and no one said you mentioned those issues. In fact, I do believe FloJo brought it up precisely because you did not make that comparison.

I saw Kucinich on George Stephanopolous a few weeks ago, and found him to be lucid, logical, passionate, and totally in keeping with my beliefs and goals for this country. And I also found it incredible that anyone would say he has no charisma, since he was riveting and highly charismatic.

I did, however, notice that his ears are slightly pointed and his face is somewhat elfin. Between his physical characteristics and his logical thinking, I finally figured out why the pundits keep saying he can't win. America is simply not ready for a Vulcan president. (This also explains why he was able to marry a woman so much younger; the longevity of Vulcans is widely known.)
He was funny, and he has some good ideas, but he apparently actually believes he has a chance. Sad!

Molly, Iowa City

What's sad is that most of the people who like what Kucinich says, who agree with his positions MORE than with those of other candidates, who would give their eye teeth for a good and decent president in the Whitehouse for a change apparently either lack the courage of their convictions or can't be bothered to participate in the primary elections.

How could he possibly win when so many are cowed by the "conventional wisdoms"? Back to your toils slaves, you will vote for the candidate your masters choose!
LE, Cedar Falls, & M.Boyle

Were you there? I was, and Lance was not being rude when he said "this has really deteriorated", the reason for the loud applause after Lance's comment was because frankly Chris and Dennis were taking the conversation down an improper route. Basically Kucinich said because of my diet I'm able to service my wife 31 years younger than me. When you have a 29 year old women behind me saying how grossed out that image was for her, and people present to hear about the candidates plans, ideas about health care and cancer how well he's able to keep up with his beautiful young wife is not appropriate. It wasn't seen as a slam on Kucinich any more than on Matthews who was more than willing to go down that path.

M. Boyle: The guys I have heard discuss the age difference have responded in a more way to go basis, kit has been mostly females that have been grossed out by the images of Kucinich with a women almost young enough to be his grand daughter. Although the young women behind me did admit that it isn't the 31 years alone that creeps her out, that the image of sleeping with Harrison Ford, or some hunk actor who is 31 years older than her would not gross her out. She thought for a 1/2 minute, smiled and said "You're right"
Zazzle: Mr. Edwards' health care system still will leave millions uninsured or in debt as long as corporations still have a hand in determining care based on a corporate profit & loss statement rather than the insured's continued health. So far, only Kucinich's bill is the only one that actually cures the nation's problem rather than putting a band-aid on an avulsion by taking the corporations out of the equation. We can pay for it by reducing ear mark spending and corporate welfare.
Here's a question for the candidates to see where they stand on true health care reform: How much money has your campaign committees recieved from Health Care and Big Pharma corporations? Then we will see who is paid off royally and who lies about it.
Yes, Kucinich does have a smokin' wife and he's a vegan.  He also saved Cleveland 200 million dollars by not privatizing the utilities when he was gov'. Not to mention, (not that anyone in the media would) he sponsored HR333; the Articles of IMPEACHMENT for Dick Cheney.
Dennis impressed Elizabeth with his plan to build a Department of Peace and his overall humanitarianism since she spent most of her life working to help others all over the world.

So I guess it's not that surprising most in the closed-minded superficial war-mongering media can't quite grasp such a concept.

Hey, I know it's a little off topic but if the media can drive us into a war built on lies, why can't it lead us towards Impeachment based on truth?
Dennis Kucinich, a man of extraordinary intelligence, clear, unlimited vision, and human compassion is our one best and last hope for the America and the world we all long for! To pass up this unique opportunity to put such a rare man at the helm of our ship of state would be an incalculable loss to us all.  He has the courage of his convictions, which include:  STRENGTH THROUGH PEACE via diplomacy and international peacekeeping and cooperation; UNIVERSAL SINGLE-PAYER NOT-FOR-PROFIT HEALTHCARE which we're already paying for but we're just not getting; JOBS via restoring INFRASTRUCTURE, axing NAFTA and WTO, and implementing alternative ENERGY; increasing EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY; AND--HE CAN'T BE BOUGHT!  IF THIS IS THE MAN YOU BELIEVE IN, PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR HEART IS. ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTE!  SUPPORT DENNIS KUCINICH!  REGISTER!  VOTE!
In heard Kusinich on Ed SChultz show on Wednesday 9/12. Like most people in this country, did not know much about him besides that he has a lovely young wife, (so what is the big deal? the political media is so skin deep!) and that he is the only one who voted against the war from day one (it speaks volumes about this guy's integrity)
I found out that he is the one who introduced legislation to impeach Bush.
When he says that he wants to end the war and bring our troops home in six month, I know he really means it.
He is getting the message from the people: enough is enough with this administration, and this war.
Frankly, any idiot can now, after the fact criticize these guys and the bloody situation. But Dennis does not stop here. He actually has solutions that make sense, that are realistic, and that address our main national issues. We, the people do expect to have a government for the people by the people, not one bought and sponsored by big money corporate interests. We expect to live in a civilized society, with decent paying jobs, assured retirement, universal access to education, and to health care. The Europeans are already doing it (Sweden, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Holland, France, etc.). They all rank better than we do in terms of quality of life for their middle-class. We can do it too, and do it better, if we have the right leadership, one that ACTUALLY CARES ABOUT THE PEOPLE.
Note to my republican friends: we are not asking for a wellfare state. We want to put an end to corporate wellfare, and replace an administration serving special interests with a government for the people. We are the people, it is our country, it is our work, and our money. We need to make smarter choices about how we spend it: hmmm... war? or education, health care, and social security?
Dennis has spoken on that show, and I found myself agreeing with him on all issues, 100%.
DENNIS KUCINICH... Too bad he does not have a sexy name or a sexy look.
Will America vote for real guy who is smart, articulate, and makes sense?
Last two time I checked, it voted for stupid.
Wake up America, forget the hype, listen to this guy, and you will see that he is real, that he is right, and that his solutions will benefit the people and the country.
I understand that Kucinich was in Syria with President Assad last week hosting a fund raiser sponsored by Hamas and Hezbollah.

I wonder how much money he raised.
To Bruce who wrote:
"Please, can some one tell me why cancer is a presidential concern? Please refer me to the place in the Constitution (you know, that thing the Dems claim Bush has disregarded?)where it's mentioned."
Thanks in advance.
No Thanks needed Bruce.  It's probably been awhile sense your Jr. High School Civic's classes but for itsy bitsy Republican/Bush adeled brain here goes.
First the President (That be the current idot) in the White House had to take an Oath when he (became)sic president.  It said "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
Once again Bruce "Promote the General Welfare" So there you have it along with "Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" that just about anwsers all of your questions does'nt it? Good day

Ditto to what R. Moon says.  You are right On.
I wonder if all this is really necessary, a vegan diet, a young wife, etc.. When we have real problems that need to be fixed, and other issues "Obama uses the Kuran (sic)for swearing into office!"  Yikes!  I wonder, a young wife, or an islamic candidate in hiding?
accumulated $161,000 in debt while battling cancer"

RH Oregon, what goes around comes around.  When you lack this much compassion, you better watch out.  When tragedy hits you or your family, I hope there are people around you who have more empathy than you show.

I'm not sure why this is an example of a bad thing. That she is alive and battling? That she has debt? That the debt is $161,000? If she is only that far in debt battling a life ending disease, then she's doing pretty good. What is the total cost? I'm betting it's way, way, more than $161,000. Why do people think this life should be a free ride?
Hell, if Barack Obama ever becomes President of the United States, then there really is nothing stopping me from attempting that climb someday on my own, and that gives me quite a chuckle. I, for instance, have never used cocaine, and I don’t smoke, but I do drink. A nice juxtaposition to Barack.

Perhaps I’m aiming too low though? In today’s America, my lack of the usual vices of our politicians might even make me a candidate for Sainthood.

I think I’ll stick to blogging the truth for now.

Good luck, Senator Obama. I know that the Democratic Party is grooming you for the Vice Presidential seat next to President Hillary with all this publicity, this article now included, and the idea of that ticket gives me and thousands of others like me chills and nightmares, but if it does come to pass, perhaps this will be exactly what the USA needs to wake her up to just how crazy and dangerous the world has become. I can almost see the Islamists sharpening their axes at the mere prospect of such a pair entering the White House. They will proclaim the intent to lead us to victory over the “radical” Muslims and the “evil terrorists”, while all-the-while giving handouts to all the “moderate” Muslims who want to find more seats in the U.S. Congress and also be sworn in on a Quran (preferably one owned by a Founding Father) and begin to tell the rest of us how to live under Sharia Law like they do so successfully in places like Saudi Arabia.

Hey, I’m just being honest. I’m sure someone as open as Barack can respect that.

I spent years in the health care field. Worked long difficult hours, accepted some serious responsibiity and provided for my family in return for a fair salary. Unfortunately, over a fourty year span, came to hate the way I earned my living.
When the goverment started trowing money at the system, the lawyers and the MBA's steped in to catch it; everything went to heck. The system is now spoiled and broken. Murder is now seen as nothing more than collateral damage. Inert products that are offered as potent new medications are dumped on a trusting public. Down with doctors who lack a social consciounce and the heck with the MBA's and lawyers who have driven the cost of quality care to unbe liveable heights.
Every day I watch this conspiracy grow.  Have you all forgotten Big Brother? Socialized medicine is just another step toward Global government. It doesn't matter who is running, it is all about who is financing them, and their agenda. Republican or Democrat...Media and so on, they are all owned by the filty rich, and I mean filty.  We are so moved by propoganda, we are a most miserable race.  Do yourself a favor all of you, go back a little in time and read, "None Dare to Call it Conspiracy". Then go from there start learning who is pulling our strings, putting the strangle hold on us.  We are such fools, it is so easy to get our eyes off the real story.
Maybe DK's wife is only interesed in the free health care she gets that us stupid taxpayers pay for--or is she looking forward to that fat pension he will get that us stupid taxpayers pay for.
Sarah, I have been vegan for almost 2 years and I'm healthier now than I've ever been.  Tell your friends they need to learn how to balance their diet properly.  And the argument about "what do with the all the farm animals" is absurd.  We'll never live in a completely vegan world because there will always be greedy & selfish people, so those animals will never be extinct.  If you want to look at causes of extinction, take a look at the mass extinctions meat consumption is causing today (wiki "Holocene Extinction Event").  We are today in the middle of a mass global extinction, mainly due to over-fishing and deforestation (which is necessary to raise animals for food at the current scale).  Please try to put some thought into your arguments.  Do some research, read a book, don't just spout your beliefs, it just makes you sound ignorant.
Ron Paul is the only one who has a 20+ record of voting in favor of the people according to the constitution, has no tainted marks for receiving lobyy money or being influenced, voted against the war, the patrioct act, and unconstitutional government spending

The question I want asked of ALL the candidates is will they keep and continue the Imperial Unitary Presidency or not? The power usurped bu Cheney/Bush is unprecedented and has changed the checks and balances so what if anything will ANY of these candidates do?
We've taken GOD out of everything and now we want to know how things got so bad. I think we should get back to the BIBLE.  America's morals and beliefs have gotten so messed up, if we don't like how it affects us we alter it to fit us. Which is wrong! Gay is wrong that's why we have AIDS. Health care has gotten so bad where we can't afford it because we are aloud to sue at the drop of a hat. You want to blame somebody or something, go looking for all the ones involved in suing. Then we have the ones that manipulate the systems. Ex. H.Clinton bought a house, rented out the quest house for the amount of her house payment to the secret service men guarding her. Guess who is paying the rent (taxpayers)and you wonder why taxes are going higher and we get to keep less. If you really want our country is a mess vote for her, look how well we turned out with her husband as president. Most don't realize the amount of money politicians get paid after  their in office they could take a real big pay cut and still make a living, we take care of them until death. Do you think that's fair. NO
If I vote democratic (not likely, thanks to a jaw dropping show of spineless-ness from Speakers Pelosi and Reid) I would vote for Kucinichi.

If I vote republican, Ron Paul is it.

These two will definately inject a fundamental paradigm shift which is badly needed in Washington, while voting for others only results in the same, ineffective government we've had since Bush was selected by the supreme court in 2000.
Show me a man who complains that caring for his fellow man is too much of a burden, and I will show you a person who has not learned yet that there is always smeone bigger or stronger or smarter - who is capable of taking from you what you have.  Those who work only for or cling only to money many times find themselves morally if not financially bankrupt.

The anticdote is to find something else to put at the center of life.  We're just tenants here, anyway.  Find something that adds the kind of richness to life that a person can keep, that sticks to you, that brings the richest reward.  Something simple, like caring for other people.
The government considers me middle class. In 2006 i spent my whole years income on doctors visits and medication. i have Rheumatoid Arthritis, have hormone replacement pellets(which my insurance pays only for the 40.00 office visit)the cost is over 300.00 a visit.I don't agree with kucinich and i'm tired of hearing what all politicians are going to do for the mexicans and the colored. What about me I work hard for what I make and I am tired of giving it all to the government for them to support somebody elses needs. Get a job and support yourselves that's what the American dream is about. It's not always easy but if i can continue to do it than so can everyone else regardless of your sickness. WE as Americans need to do away with WELFARE and put the PEOPLE back to work. YOU don't WORK, YOU don't EAT, that should be the American way. At the end of the 2006 Year I still had to pay more than my fair share of taxes and I AM TIRED OF IT. Don't like it tough, you can move to another country. I could go on and on about how sorry American people have become waiting on a handout.

Isn't Bush a BIBLE thumper?... Look what a dumbass he is.  Aids because of Gays???  Hillary's rent is raising taxes????  Are you wearing blinders.  I pray for the return of the Clinton years.  I'll take brains, prosperity and the Blowjob over this downward spiral any day..... Is there anything this asshole has accomplished in his 7 years in office?????  All I can think of is runaway gas prices, uncontrolled illegal immigration, declining economy, and an unjustifiable TRILLION DOLLAR war that has no end.
@ RH in Oregon - Obviously you are not your brother's keeper. It's this mentality that proves we have really lost our hearts and compassion in this country and the leaders we have are reflective of the people they "serve".  If you ever get down ridden with a life threatening disease - the last thing you need to worry about is leaving your family destitude and struggling to survive your debt created by trying to survive.  We have a right to good medical treatment - and it should not be reserved for only those who can afford it.  We socialize a lot of things in this country and medicine, unfortunately is not about our health - it's about profit - and if we were to step back for a minute a listen to ourselves - or you listen to yourself, maybe then you would see what you sound like to those of us reading.

I find it rather disgraceful that these Senators, Congresspeople and our administration officials find that our tax dollars are good enough to support their health care but not good enough to support the health care of the poorest children in this country.

Not only do they receive health care and the best of the best thanks to America's hard working citizens whose tax dollars fund their health care, their families health care and not just for their time as a civil servant (yeah right) but also for the rest of their life from the moment they step into office until they die - but God forbid they use our tax dollars to provide decent health care for those paying for theirs - instead they use it for paying those inflated invoices submitted by their spouses companies who won no-bid government contracts in a war we shouldn't be fighting;  they spend it on bigger office space;  their own salary increases;  their gold medal hand outs to their elite wealthy collegues and party functions;  their travel expenses and new furniture for their offices;  legislating important stuff like dedicating post offices and honoring some state sports team - (obviously a bill sponsored by a representative of that state, soon up for re-election) and passing bills that help their own financial endeavors florish.  American people need to wake up and smell the dirty rotten rat bastards in Washington - and Dennis Kuccinich happens to be one of the few decent politicians (and trust me their aren't many of them) there are up there on the hill.

The dems and the republicans may have different agendas and different party platforms but NONE of them are meant to benefit us, the American people.  They all drink from the same well up there on the hill so neither side of the fence will be pissing in it.  Those that are on our side, like Denniss and Ron Paul and Mike Gavel and even Cynthia McKinney (who as you can see, no longer is in a position where she can contaminate their drinking well with the truth) never get the attention or the support they need.  Are the American people really that blinded by the propaganda and the thought control the press is mainly responsible or are we just dark souls and missing our hearts and minds?  I wonder sometimes.
Dennis Kucinich got the sense of humor and the intelligence. Unfortuanately, media hasn't be covering him as much as they should. I hope they start to cover his campaign more; he by far the most impressive presidential candidate. You got my vote, mr kucinich.
The billions per year wasted on the war on drugs would feed, house and provide medical care for every american man, woman and child.
Sorry Sarah in Plano TX, but try a new approach: your anecdotal "evidence" of knowing "a few" vegans is weak, and quite unscientific compared to the ADA's (largest group of nutritionists in America) 2003 Position Paper on Vegetarian Diets commentary on vegan health.  ...and it doesn't take long to read.

Your arguments about farm animals may be a sign that you suffer from one of the illnesses of eating meat: It's proven that vegans have 19 extra IQ points on average (JADA 1980; 76:142-7), not to mention they suffer from less Alzheimer's.
