Romney links Craig with Bill Clinton

From NBC's Mark Murray

In his interview on CNBC's Kudlow & Company (which will air later this afternoon), Mitt Romney had some sharp words for Sen. Larry Craig, who had endorsed the former Massachusetts governor's presidential campaign and was his Idaho chairman. "Once again, we've found people in Washington have not lived up to the level of respect and dignity that we would expect for somebody that gets elected to a position of high influence. Very disappointing. He's no longer associated with my campaign, as you can imagine... I'm sorry to see that he has fallen short."

And Romney also included this jab at Bill Clinton as he continued to talk about Craig: "I think it reminds us of Mark Foley and Bill Clinton. I think it reminds us of the fact that people who are elected to public office continue to disappoint, and they somehow think that if they vote the right way on issues of significance or they can speak a good game, that we'll just forgive and forget. And the truth of the matter is, the most important thing we expect from elected--an elected official is a level of dignity and character that we can point to for our kids and our grandkids, and say, `Hey, someday I hope you grow up and you're someone like that person.' And we've seen disappointment in the White House, we've seen it in the Senate, we've seen it in Congress. And frankly, it's disgusting."

***UPDATE*** Below is the conversation regarding Craig and Clinton....

LARRY KUDLOW, host:
Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, presidential candidate on the Republican side, who is surging in the polls, actually.

Governor, welcome back to KUDLOW & COMPANY.

Governor MITT ROMNEY: Thanks, Larry, good to be with you.

KUDLOW: All right, thank you, sir. I'm obliged to begin with what has become a front-page story. Senator Larry Craig of Ohio was caught in a police sting operation in the men's room of the Minneapolis Airport making sexual advances to another man. He's pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct at the moment. Mr. Craig's one of your Senate leaders. I believe he was your Idaho state chairman. What is your comment on the Craig problem, sir?

Gov. ROMNEY: Well, very disappointing. Once again, we've found people in Washington have not lived up to the level of respect and dignity that we would expect for somebody that gets elected to a position of high influence. Very disappointing. He's no longer associated with my campaign, as you can imagine. He resigned just today. And you know, he was one of those who was helping my effort, and I'm sorry to see that he has fallen short.

KUDLOW: One of your backers, radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt, he's a great friend of mine, has called for Mr. Craig to resign from the Senate. Are you going to ask him to resign from the Senate? Will you make a public call on that?

Gov. ROMNEY: You know, I haven't made a call on that at this stage. You know, I haven't seen the allegations yet, I just heard that there was a guilty plea and he submitted a resignation as my liaison in the Senate. And you know, I'm very disappointed that he has--he's disappointed the American people.

KUDLOW: You know, there's a whole flood of stories on this, which I think to some extent may be a test of leadership in this primary. The Idaho Statesman has a devastating article about Craig, so does The Washington Post, so does Roll Call. Apparently, a couple years ago, a professional man close to the Republican Party reported having oral sex with Craig at Union Station in Washington in 2004. Apparently, there are allegations and charges going back to 1982, where Mr. Craig was forced to deny having sex with pages. Isn't this the sort of thing that reminds us all of the Mark Foley episode last fall, before the elections, that was devastating to the Republicans?

Gov. ROMNEY: Yeah, I think it reminds us of Mark Foley and Bill Clinton. And frankly, it's disgusting.

KUDLOW: Governor, if there were a President Romney, and you heard this, and your staff briefed you on some of the past allegations and charges, and there seems to be something of a cover-up, a silence on this with regard to Craig, would you not call for him to resign from the Senate?

Gov. ROMNEY: If--you know, I don't know the circumstances right now of his setting, and so I really can't call--make that call without having reviewed it, Larry. I will review that, and we'll give you a call on that. I certainly felt that Bill Clinton shouldn't have stayed in office. But you know, with regards to this setting, why, we'll take a close look at it.

KUDLOW: Actually, on that Clinton point, you threw Clinton in with the Craig episode and the Mark Foley episode. Could you just expand a little bit on that for us, sir?

Gov. ROMNEY: I'm not sure I need to. I think we've all heard the story about Bill Clinton and the fact that he let us down in his personal conduct with a--with a White House intern. And that strikes me as another one of these extraordinary acts of falling short of what America would expect of elected officials, particularly one who should be held to a higher standard.

KUDLOW: Do you think the Monica Lewinksy, impeachment and so forth, she was indicted--he, Mr. Clinton, was indicted in the House, he was not convicted in the Senate, Governor, does that become an issue again in this presidential campaign?

Gov. ROMNEY: I don't think so. I think the experience of the--of mine in the political world is that the things that we've heard about in the past, we tend to forget and not bring back up. But obviously, the continued parade of sexual misconduct in Washington, DC, is something which is very disturbing to America's families. And when you're trying to raise children, and you have stories like the ones we've seen over the last several years coming out of
Washington, that's very troubling. And I expect that people should be held to a higher standard, and that is something I'd expect to see in this particular case as well as in other cases that have proceeded it.

KUDLOW: You know, a friend of mine was on the phone this morning. A friend of mine was saying to me, you know, if you don't do these things, then you don't get into any trouble. Why do you think it is that we still get these kinds of news items coming out of Washington, DC? Elected officials, instead of just not doing them, they are insisting on doing them. What does it say about our culture? What does it say about the morality of public figures?

Gov. ROMNEY: Well, it does say, in my view, that some people in the public sphere expect that once they've been elected to something, they're prominent, that they're--that they're above the law, that they won't get caught, that people will give them a break, that they--that they somehow can live a different morality. And the truth of the matter is, if there's a different morality they should live, it should be a high--a higher level of morality. And if they've been involved in any discretion in their life, they should cease that discretion by the time they become elected, and should try and set an example in the way they live, which is consistent with the things they say. And you know, that's hard for everyone. But certainly, expecting people to live a life consistent with the dignity of the office to which they're elected is something which the American people should be able to count on.

Yeah, that's it. Bring up Bill. when everything else fails, just bring up Bill. Of course... it doesn't matter that Bill and Monica's tryst was CONSENSUAL whereas Craig was looking to pick up a john in the stall who turned out to be a cop. Nice comparison there, Willard!
Was/is Senator Craig a friend of Mitt Romney's?
It always makes me a litle uneasy when I hear a politician or talking head opining about morality. In the back of my head, I always wonder what skeletons lie in their closet.
Watch how, and how quickly, the Clinton campaign deals with this smear, equating marital infidelity with Child molestation and soliciting a POLICEMAN for gay prostitution, by the Romney campaign.
This is what you can expect from the republicans, who have NOTHING to run on, to do to the democratic nominee WHOEVER it is. Whoever you support in the current group of democratic candidates, don't fool yourself into thinking that your candidate will be immune to, or that the republicans won't dare to, use every lie, half-truth, smear, insinuation and guilt by association, to STEAL the election in November 2008.

This is why I, and others here have stated that anyone who says that if their candidate is NOT the nominee, they won't vote for the winner in the general election.

You can see what the last 6 years has done to our Country, whatdo you think another 6 to TEN YEARS would mean?

Van
Boy !!
Even I'll admit THAT'S A CHEAP SHOT !!
Trying to blame Republican sex fiends on Bill Clinton?
Consider the source...

How about Rudy, and Fred and Newt ?
Have THEY  fallen short, too ?
Talk about hypocrites !!
Surely Mr. Romney had heard the rumors about this guy.  They do belong to the same small, exclusive club known as the US Senate.  Goodness, I hope he wasn't cruising the bathrooms in the Capitol!!  How deliciously naughty!
You are right M. Boley...when everything else fails, blame Bill or Hillary.  I get great joy in hearing about this A Hole Senator.  Craig, you are a disgrace.  Do your THING in private.  Push your THING in your own bedroom...or isn't there enough room with wifey?
Mitt Romney needs to be very careful ... very shortly they will air his dirty laundry and that of his "not so picture perfect family" ... it's best to stay away from these issues ...we are all human and we all have skeltons in our closets ...
Mitt, your sad, trying to link a consensual act between a man and woman to slam a democrat while linking to a gay, pedophile republican act to that of Bill Clinton.  Talk about a stretch, your learning the ways of Washington quicker than you think ole boy.
Sure, consensual sex between adults is in every way the equivalent to soliciting minors.  Especially since Bill never pretended to be a choir boy while Foley was looking for one while representing the party of God himself.  Of course you don't have to look beyond Mitt's own life to find that he doesn't mind hypocracy
Ahh.. Bill Clinton and Mark Foley in the same sentence? This shows just how confused the republicans and Mr. Romney are about sex in general. It sounds like he doesn't get THAT sort of thing from his wife. Oh icky Mitt! I won't do THAT!
And frankly, YOU are disgusting mr. flaky flip flop!
Ludicrous rhetoric, this senator has an appalling voting record on gay rights , yet another closeted gay Republican who wants to deny gay people of their rights, while wishes to avail himself of gay sex! How in the name of all that's holy is this anything like Bill Clinton????  These mealy-mouthed holier than thou types that flock to this administration make me ill.
Sierra nailed it: Willard had better watch out with this one. He and the party are in no position to be spouting off on 'morality'. Not by a long shot. There's a lot of filth on the Repub side these days.
Speaking of dignity and respect has the church of latterday saints began accepting blacks into their church. I was once told by a mormon bishop that we don't have them in our church because they are descended from Ham. This particular bishop was raised in Georgia so my info could be incorrect. ps No I am no not black but a bleeding heart white liberal.
Not to excuse anyone breaking the law, but let's be real - "sexual misconduct" happens everywhere around this country.  Bill Clinton was not the first man to receive oral sex in his office, nor will he be the last.  Craig is not the first man to have covert sexual encounters with men of the same sex.  And cheating on your spouse is not unique to members of Congress or the White house.  If this is a problem, it is not a D.C. problem but a U.S. problem.  To label it as being a problem among politicians is just ridiculous.

Mitt said "the most important thing we expect from elected--an elected official is a level of dignity and character that we can point to for our kids and our grandkids, and say, `Hey, someday I hope you grow up and you're someone like that person."

This is not the MOST IMPORTANT THING!  I expect an elected official to be honest and ethical in public life, to uphold the constitution and laws of the United States, and to do the job he or she was elected to do.  If I want role models for my children, I will point to their father, their grandparents, their aunts and uncles -- not to athletes and certainly not to politicians!
What a pitiful little, small minded man is Mr. Romney. After all until today Larry Craig was very important to Romney's campaign, and now after an incident, which if you read the arresting officer's report, can be construed several ways, Romney is disavowing Craig and throwing him to the wolves. I firmly believe Craig guilty, but I also believe Romney to be a disloyal, self centered, its all about me, untrustworthy man who cannot possibly function well as President. Not that that's important anyway. Even the Republicans, as pitiful as their presidential list is, have several candidates far superior to Romney, so he doesn't have a chance to regal us with his "Holier than Thou" attitudes.
What a sleaze!  Romney could have just distanced himself from Craig, and condemned his actions, but he uses this incident to try to get a political benefit for himself.  I can smell the stench from here.
The smartest thing Sen. clinton could do here, and so I suspect she will, is ignore this desperate remark by a second tier Republican candidate who would love nothing more than to get in a tussel with the Democratic frontrunner to change the subject and make him look like more of a threat than he is.  The simple rule that applies here is "consider the source."
That's funny.  I always thought the most important thing to look for in a Presidential candidate was effective governance and sound policy decisions.  Frankly, I don't care what anyone does in their private life so long as it is legal and doesn't negatively impact the effecient running of the country.

And for the record, Bill Clinton never once tried to tell America what they can and can not do in their personal lives.  The same thing can not be said of Foley, Craig, Bill O'Reilly, and every other far right gas bag that has been caught not practicing what they preach.
What do you expect from a Queenie looking guy in a cult who can not even spell Obama. He likes to play dirty and spell it Osama, he is beyond contempt M.R.=  mean and rotten.
The campaign he and Healy ran in Ma was the most despicable ever, they lost.
Mitt you still suck.
Bravo Romney!  Many Americans are sick of the filth that's coming out of Washington.  Regardless of what some of you may say, there are many of us that do not have these skeletons in our closets.  Some of these people have crossed lines that many of us have not.  And no, we are not holier than thou, and we are not unusual.  The media seems to point to the liberal and loose mentality and lifestyle, when many of us believe in morals, families, ethics, manners, integrity, and GOD.
People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.  The hypocristy of the Republican Party just keeps growing.

Milt could have mentioned Newt dumping his wife while she was in the hospital or Rudy dumping his wife during a press conference.  How many marriages have they had?  And Milt could have mentioned David Vitter.  Or Ted Stevens (although I guess flat-out bribes and graft don't have the same appeal as engaging prostitutes or soliciting strangers in public restrooms).

Talk about family values.  I don't want these guys anywhere near my family.  I swear they're contagious.

And Milt's a real stand-up guy.  He dumped Craig like a hot potato.  I'm not defending Craig, but with friends like Milt he doesn't need any enemies.
Susan quit talking nasty on here!
Carrie can you run that by us again?  A U S Senator arrested in a men's room...ridiculous, not scandalous?
HUH!
Romney is right.  There's a wave of degenerate leaders who do not have moral fiber.  Certainly not examples to children.  Clinton did a terrible thing which he confessed to.  To all those previous comments, please screw your heads back on.  How can the country trust a man whose wife can't?
Be careful, Debrar. You may end up eating those words.
Mitt Romney is truly representative of all the Republican hypocrites who ceaselessly cry out, "Family values, family values," while at the same time chasing after congressional pages, cheating on their spouses, walking around in drag, soliciting homosexual sex in public restrooms...almost makes one swoon from the disgusting stench.
Carrie, I can honestly say I've never gotten oral sex in the office. But then I work mostly with men, and simply not interested in becoming Republican, so...
Clinton wasnt he the guy behind the linburgh baby kidnapping and the hindenburgh, and dont forget mi lia,and he was son of sams dogs handler and he masterminded the airport hiest with henry hill man oh man please allow me to introduce myself why he might be the devil himself or at least married to the devil at least they teach my kids responsebility
I think Mr Rommney is trying to walk were angels fear to tread! I am Mormon  and he is not what i would want my kids to look up to. As for what he is saying about Clinton...man leave it at rest bcause your party has had some very interesting people pop out of the wood work lately...
vanreuter, NY NY states /  "This is why I, and others here have stated that anyone who says that if their candidate is NOT the nominee, they won't vote for the winner in the general election." what they have been saying van is "they won't vote for hillary if she is nominated" no other dem candidate has had that statement made about them so quit twisting it around to make it look otherwise, by the way van what does this word from the same post mean "whatdo"? if you acquired a secondary education maybe you can get your money back, good news for hillary though, I hear the chinese cats illegally laundering money over here are behind her 110%, she is a real piece of work
I am glad someone like Mitt Romney will say that we should ask more from our government leaders. I do put Sen. Craigs conduct in the same catagory as Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton did his act with a White House Intern, while in the Oval Office! Clinton's is worse because who he was and where he was! He totaly dis-respected the Office of President literaly.

I think it is correct to lump all of these people into the same group for what they did while in public office. Splitting hairs on the difference of their acts is as useful as defining what "Is is" if your remember how Bill Clinton took responsibility for his actions.

We all are focused on what Larry Craig did and what Mitt Romney said....

...but did anyone notice that President Bush told the American Legion today that he has authorized American commanders to take action against Iran?
I doubt that I'll eat my words.  That's such a typical thing for people to say when they prepare for the worst case scenario.  Many people try to live decent lives, and the "skeletons" they have are normal mistakes that they wish they could go back and fix -- UNLIKE other people who intentionally are bad people, doing bad things, hoping to not get caught, etc.  I have no words to eat.  I am what I say I am, and I try to be a decent person.  Try to work your mind games on someone who is more wishy-washy, naive, and PC then me.
Latest talking point: "Bill Clinton made me do it!"
Carrie soliciting or having sex in a public restroom is shameful and also illegal, regardless of the gender of the ones involved. One of the congressmen who was arrested in ABSCAM later said that he and his wife had sex on the steps of the capitol building one dark midnite.
Let us not lose sight of the fact that Sen. Craig was Romney's Idaho state chairman. The issue is not that Craig was busted in a men's room. The issue, yet again, is that another republican paragon of virtue was exposed to be a fraud and a liar. Anyone out there still think Mitt is as pure as the driven snow? No way in hell this episode was a surprise to him. I hope it costs him dearly.
Bill at least gave us a new action verb in a lewinsky.

Craig just makes me have to bathe. Nothing like the cleanliness of an airport bathroom to excite one.

Duncan Hunter in 08!!!
When all else fails when you are a Republican anc can't explain your party's corruption....mention Clinton. Child sex predators..Clinton! Log Cabin republican caught in the act...Clinton! Premptive wars with no clear way out...Clinton!. Terrorist attacks on U.S. soil...Clinton! And if you really are fumbling for words throw in Ted Kennedy or for the older set..Carter.
"I'm not sure I need to. I think we've all heard the story about Bill Clinton and the fact that he let us down in his personal conduct with a--with a White House intern. And that strikes me as another one of these extraordinary acts of falling short of what America would expect of elected officials, particularly one who should be held to a higher standard."

Wait, I thought it wasn't about sex....

Can't flip-flop Mitt even keep his party's taling points straight?
Romney Lives in a mens restroom. Craig and him have been in there many times together. Romneys hiding the truth.
It will be interesting to find out if Mr Craig will resign.  As a gay man, confortable with myself, I find great pleasure in the exposure of hypocrites. If  he is gay, so what. That is his business. I particularly find it disgusting that he needs to go into a public bathroom and solicit sex.
I agree with Mr. Romney.  Mr. Clinton was President of the United States. He should have shown more respect for his wife and the citizens of the United States.  I am sure these individuals know what they are doing is wrong but do it anyway no matter who it hurts.  They are lacking integrity.  I admire individuals who live this value of integrity.  I heard someone define a value as something that means more to you than what you want. So many times people just focus on what makes them happy for the moment and don't think past that.
Please remember, Clinton's sex was not consensual, since "she had sex with me but I didn't have sex with her" was his pitifully weak defense.
Kenn you are too much, I am enjoying a great laugh. Thanks
Cast not the first stone, Romney.  No, you aren't accused of the same behavior but you flaunt your religous rightous beliefs while not recognizing the past history of sexual abuse here in Idaho by the mormons,  Too numerous cases to list but most current the Seattle boy scouts.  You have been a staunch supporter of Bush's war but you and the rest of the mormons here in Idaho have been careful to send your sons on missions not in the army.
You and Craig are birds of a feather, both hypocrits.
Bones
The problem is the hypocrisy, Mitt.  Voting to prevent civil unions and, therefore, the right to inherit property, make life and death decisions or  adopt children for millions of American citizens while he hides behind a wife and three adopted children in his heterosexual *marriage*.  He had to defend himself in the '80's against allegations of sex and drug parties with Congressional aides and he's been defending himself on a regular basis ever since.  Gosh, I bet you're shocked.   Yeah, this is like Clinton.  This is like the Republican party, making laws for the rest of us while they ignore them, sending other men's children to war while they hit the hard campaign trail, trying to impeach a President by holding hearings to ask him about his sexual activities while running around on your second wife after abandoning the first in the hospital with cancer.  The Democrats couldn't even begin to compete in the sleazeball marathon the "new conservative Republicans" started when Clinton was President.
