Craig apologizes, says not gay

From NBC's Mark Murray
In a press conference from Idaho, embattled Sen. Larry Craig (R) apologized for bringing a cloud over his family and his state -- but not for what happened at that Minneapolis airport. "I did nothing wrong at the Minneapolis airport," he said, adding it was a "lapse in judgment" to plead guilty for committing a lewd act in a men's bathroom.

VIDEO: Sen. Larry Craig's Boise, Idaho statement.

He said pleading guilty was an overreaction to a monthslong investigation by the local Idaho Statesman into his sex life. "I am not gay. I have never been gay."

He went on to say, "I believe I can still be an effective leader for our state," and stated he would keep his plans to announce whether he will seek re-election next month.

Mitt Romney said:
"I think it reminds us of the fact that people who are elected to public office continue to disappoint, and they somehow think that if they vote the right way on issues of significance or they can speak a good game, that we'll just forgive and forget. ...  And we've seen disappointment in the White House, we've seen it in the Senate, we've seen it in Congress. And frankly, it's disgusting."

So true Mitt, but maybe not in the way you meant. I think Mitt is right about not forgiving and forgetting. We should make sure the voters do not forgive and forget.  I believe that a main reason George Bush was elected (OK appointed by the Supreme Court), was a send-a-message backlash because of the Monica Lewinsky scandal.  I heard from many people who said they were disgusted and would vote Republican in protest.

The Republicans have racked up more than enough scandal that the send-a-message theme will sway many voters to the Democratic side to restore the country's reputation. We should tell the voters to send a message and vote Democratic.
Craig chose his words carefully today.  Stating that he was "not gay" did not deny that he had had sexual encounters with men in the past be they in public restrooms or in a private location.  I have no idea if the signals that he used or things he did suggest he was soliciting sex.  What I am really trying to figure out is how would two people, regardless of their sex be able to have a sexual encounter in a stall.  Does one try to slide under to the other stall?  Having used a stall for appropriate purposes over the years, I cannot figure out the physical logistics of this at all.  Can anyone explain without being too graphic?
Come on Sen. Craig, only an idiot pleads guilty to a crime they never committed and god knows we don't need anymore idiots in government.
To quote someone smarter than this lot:

"The lady doth protest too much, methinks."

--From Hamlet (III, ii, 239)
A lot of men separate the "gay lifestyle" from man-to-man sexual activities. Many think that if they are married, and live a life approved by society, that if they have this little "quirk", then they are really straight. It's just this "little thing" that they do occassionally.  That's where Senator Craig is coming from. He doesn't identify with the gays we see in the media, or on Will and Grace.  He's a family man, who just happens to like a little, occassional man-to-man action. Very much like Rev. Ted Haggarty.
A whole secgment of our society operates this way.
Yeah right he isn't gay.Not that i care which ever way.My point is if you are not guilty why signed a document to admit guilt?..I am  no lawyer but i have better sense not to sign on the dotted line without making sure what i am signing.I think i would probably accept the i  didn't do anything wrong if you had said it wasn't you, (lmao) may be that would be more believable.A Senator didn't understand what he was admitting to?..Give me a break, sound like Mark Foley just got a running mate.Too often we heard all these people speaking against gays or fighting against them only to find out they are in the closet.Remember Mark Foley was one who back the bill to put pervert in jail yet he was one. Then we had that preacher dude who used the pulpit to speaks out about gays, only to found out that he was as gay as gay can be.Now you have a US Senator who speaks out against gay and yet he is perhaps one.Talk about calling the kettle black.Craig just admit the bloody thing and get over it already, action speaks louder than words.YOU ARE SO BUSTED.You signed the document because you are guilty as hell. You are a fake and i hope people will realize that you are also dishonest.I wouldn't vote for you,not because you are gay or what ever, but because you are a big joker and a liar.Sorry for the  state that you are Senator of.Being honest can only set you free even if others gives against you,but at least you are honest.I am not making any bet but i am sure few weeks or months from now you will be holding a press conference telling every one you are gay and the rest is history.
I'm gay and live in Idaho.  I am college educated in Agricultural Science and currently working on my Masters.  I am a Catholic and single and never lived a lie by participating in a "heterosexual marriage".  I have a hard time listening to the likes of Sen. Craig, who appartenly is living a lie and does everything in his warped way on craping on the state of Idaho.  In a way I feel sorry for him, but he shows no remorse and will years later "come out" cured like Ted Haggard.  Amazing.
For all those with their heads in the sand, let me remind you that the likely main reason Craig pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct is because he was originally  also charged with "interference with privacy".  This is a much more serious offense that is characterized as a crime involving sexual or attempted sexual misconduct such as being a Peeping Tom or engaging in lewd public behavior.

It is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $3000 fine.

Disorderly conduct is a catchall charge that might not have a sexual implication at all.  Im not really sure whether the first charge carries the stigma of being a sex offender or not, but definitely carries the connotation of sexual deviate behavior.

For those of you who think that he was just playing footsie, here is a report from the Idaho Statesman as of today unexpurgated:

A 40-year-old professional man with close ties to Republican officials told the Idaho Statesman he had oral sex with Sen. Larry Craig at Washington's Union Station, probably in 2004.

The man spoke to the Statesman on the condition he not be named. He said he was sure it was Craig he had oral sex with but said he had no evidence other than his word.

Craig denied the allegations, and said, "I am not gay and I have never been in a restroom in Union Station having sex with anybody.

"There's a very clear bottom line here," Craig said. "I don't do that kind of thing. I am not gay, and I never have been."

Here is what the man told the Statesman, with some of the details of the men's room encounter edited out:

"Upon walking into Union Station one day, I made eye contact with a well-dressed older gentleman whom I recognized as Sen. Craig. We, after having made eye contact for 30 seconds or so, we began walking towards one of the restrooms in Union Station.

"I followed him in there. We went to the urinals, where we both unzipped ...

"The restroom became busy, too busy to do anything. So we zipped up and then followed each other to the second restroom in Union Station, where we began the same process. And had a -- I also performed fellatio for a very, very short amount of time, as that restroom became busy as well. At that point we both zipped up and left and went on our separate ways.

"Walking time included I would say maybe three minutes, four minutes. Not very long.

"It was unmistakable. I mean, I just recognized him, you know, as being Sen. Craig. I just didn’t have any doubt in my mind that that’s who it was. And when the encounter was over I proceeded to search on the internet and confirm that you know with a picture of him, and sure enough it was him.

"I contacted Mike Rogers via email after having read on his web site he was at that point outing staff members, which I am less comfortable as a gay person outing staff members than people like Sen. Craig who are actually voting on legislation negatively affecting gay people as they are themselves having gay sex.

"I’ve always been interested in politics and probably if you showed me pictures of the hundred senators I could probably name 75 or 80 of them. And that would be true over the last probably 20 years. So, I don’t think it’s unusual that I did recognize him. There’s no doubt in my mind that that’s who it was."

You will note that to put it delicately, the Senator
allegedly performed first and then the other gentleman reciprocated somewhat.

King'CRAIG' has no clothes.
You guys know me so you know that I do not typically lead with, ahem, "gut feelings". I see all the proof that Sen. Craig is a lying hypocrite. Intellectually, I know he is as guilty as the sin he has so adamantly opposed.

I certainly have been no proponent of the current band of Rs who have contributed so heavily to the fact that we have incompetence driving the WH.

However, there is still something about all this that is just not sitting right with me.

Anybody else feeling that sense of overreaction or something? I can't even put it into words.

This is so unlike me that the very fact that I'm posting about this level of unsubstantiated "feeling" is telling.

Don't yell at me, ok?

Just asking for your respectful opinions as to why I might be experiencing this. I didn't react this way to the Foley situation or the Allen fiasco. Hmmmm.
Holders of U.S. government security clearances are required to report ANY arrest. If Craig didn't do this he has yet more consequences to face. Any effectiveness he may have had as senator are cleary gone. He must step down NOW. And hopefully he will get past the denial stage and deal with his demons.
i don't care if he's gay. a hypocrite--now that matters.
Gee, what's the next revelation gonna be.....Laura Bush and Lynn Cheney having a saucy affair in the lincoln bedroom? Makes you wonder. The neocons are such self righteous hypocrites. Democrats are not any better. My eldest sister advised me many years ago "We are as sick as our secrets" Seems like Mr.Craig has some secrets that have come out of the closet.
He gets just what he deserve.  This type of behavior has been happenings for many years, and I think that his behavior is very much true.  HE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!He is not being fair to himself or his family.  I feel sorry for his wife because so many wives are caught up in their husband's secret ways, and so many of them are dying from AIDS................
What I'd really like to know are these things: Did Larry Craig vote FOR proposals, such as DOMA or anything against equal marriage rights? Did he vote AGAINST proposals, such as Hate crimes legislation & equal rights for ALL, including sexual orientation (real or perceived), either at the state of federal levels?  I haven't checked those things out just yet but the smart money bets that he voted just as you'd expect from a hypocritical closet case ...totally against himself!  Those of the big elephant party are stuck in such a bubble of denial. UGHHHH!!! For shame!!!
We understand Mr. Craig, you are not gay, your behavior is just a little queer.
Imagine this scene...

Sen. Craig (on the witness stand): I have a wide stance, I guess

Joe Pesci:  I'm sorry, I was way over there.  Did you say you have a "wide stance"?  That's it?  Are we to believe that your stance is wider than any other man's stance in an airport bathroom stall than in any other place on the face of the earth? Or perhaps the laws of physics cease to exist in your stall? Was this a magic stance?  Did you get it from the same guy that sold Wilt Chamberlin his stance?

Sorry...  Couldn't help it...  LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Them that make the 'we are better than you'  laws falls on his own sword...or perhaps on someone else's.  "Tis not the sin as much as the hypocrisy".
Independent TX You got me thinking and I too smell a
ploy to get the attention off the WH. Makes me think the sting was just waiting for the KNOWN senator to come in and take a peek.(leak) They don't care who they throw under the bus or who they destroy. He was as they say being "outed" anyway.
I think the guy who talked to the newspaper should stop living a lie and tell us who he is.
H P Boston (Sent Wednesday, August 29, 2007 10:13 AM)

HP, "You got me thinking" is the greatest compliment someone can pay me. Thank you.

This situation being used as a diversion may be true but that didn't strike the "AHA!" chord in me.

This is really strange. Normally, I would be posting my disgust about this but .......

Don't know what it is.
Yeah, that's it HP, you are right.  Bush is outing Craig to take attention away from himself.  Also, Rove has left the WH, but he left his weather machine behind, and Bush is still using it for his own maniacal deeds to conjure up all these storms we've been having, you know, to take attention away from the WH.  And that eclipse we had the other day - Bush did that too. He needed the cover of darkness to destroy the mid-west corn crop so the price of ethanol fuel would go up.

HP, they do have pills that treat paranoia.  You may want to look into getting some.  They can now be mixed with gin just so people like you will like them even more.
Andy where can I get some of that GIN and PILLS??
Do not be shy tell me where your drug contact is, do you recommend any color, and what brand of gin again?
Thanks for your kind words and helpful information.
Oh no I feel dizzy again...ANDY!
Craig is being shoved out and Rove is going to be the Senator from IDAHO! Thats it! I had pills no gin yet.
It was a nice touch to have his wife at the press conference humming stand by your man.

It would have been more believable if he were standing alone singing I enjoy being a girl.

If he is forced to resign he can always write a book called the best restrooms to look for love in.

I’m sure he knows them all.

Keep waging that wiener larry.

Independent, I too feel the same way and commented briefly on another thread that no matter what his proclivities, Craig has walked in Gay shoes in the sense that he now should know firsthand the unequal treatment gays get for what is essentially a pickup versus what happens to heteros. Actually sexual activity in a public place or restroom is another matter. There is a reason people yell "get a room" to over-amorous couples in public.
Now I remember where I saw this guy before!  It was ast the Crew Club [a men's only "bathhouse"] in DC!
Larry Craig: Stone Him!

Stoning Craig: the new Sport of Kings at Townhall and elsewhere.

I have heard or learned of a number of innocents who have pled guilty to an charge merely because they can't afford to fight it or because they want to want to get the matter past them. Many are those who have no confidence in the judicial branches particularly the criminal side.

My friend, Judge Ralph Adam Fine of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, has written a book on the corrupt system of plea bargaining, Escape of the Guilty. The title is in part misleading because the 'system' not only works to allow the guilty to go free, but, as Judge Fine says in an related article, operates also to make the innocent  suffer.  In the article, he concludes with this:

“The dual aim of our criminal justice system is ‘that guilt shall not escape or innocence suffer,“’ according to the US. Supreme Court in United States v. Nobles. Tragically, plea bargaining and all its fictions, poses, and expediencies permit both the guilty to escape and the innocent to suffer. As a result, none of us is truly safe. Just as we would not permit “grade bargaining” in our schools, we should not permit “plea bargaining” in our courts of “justice.”

Now I will say that I don't know whether Sen. Craig entered a guilty plea because of a fear of worse punishment or bad publicity or what. And I certainly don't know whether a plea bargain was involved. Or whether he was actually guilty or not. Moreover, as the alleged "victim" was a cop, one has to wonder whether the alleged crime was a "victimless" one.

In any case, it's about as unseemly as the conduct he was accused of to turn this into a contest to see who can spew the most coarse ridicule of the man. What he really needs, guilty or innocent, is a dose of Judeo-Christian charity and certainly not the pile-driving he has been getting here and elsewhere.

I must admit to being more than just slightly amused by this most recent sex scandal on the part of another oh-so-righteous "conservative" defender of faith and virtue. At the same time, I am not particulary perturbed by the private sexual behavior of our elected officials - as long as they keep out of MY bedroom, I would be more than happy to keep out of THEIRS. A bit less hypocrisy would nonetheless be apprciated.
It is important, of course, for the public to be aware of precisely who these officials are REALLY  screwing and I hope that the press can become even more vigilent as the public's watchdog.  For the most part, it is the middle and lower class that always gets screwed by these individuals and the corporations to which they are beholden.  THAT is the real scandal here -  Sex stories, endless coverage of Paris Hilton's escapades etc. keep us entertained but divert us from from far greater dangers.
IS  IT POSSIBLE FOR TUCKER TO GET OVER HIS HATRED FOR HILLARY?? HE SOUNDS LIKE HANNITY AND ITS GETTING BORING. GET OVER IT GUYS, ADD SOMETHING ELSE IN YOUR STUPID CONVERSATIONS BESIDE CRITIZING HILLARY. I FIND YOU JUST ANOTHER CHAUVANIST. PUNDITS LIKE YOU GUYS
CONTRIBUTE NOTHING TO INFORMING THE PUBLIC ABOUT WHAT IS REALLY HAPPENIG. TAKE SOME LESSONS FROM KEITH AND CHRIS, EVEN WOLF MAKES NEWS INTERESTING.
