Edwards takes shots; Carter by side

Posted: Wednesday, August 29, 2007 3:39 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
With former President Jimmy Carter by his side, Edwards visited Georgia Southwestern State University to discuss his vision for America and his plans to build One America. Edwards began his speech with an attack on Bush's request for more money to fund the surge in Iraq. Using his fingers to make quote marks while saying the word "surge," Edwards dismissed the idea as a good plan.

"The Congress will be coming back next week, and I think the American people have seen enough excuses," Edwards said. "They don't want excuses anymore. They want to see this war come to an end. They want to see it brought to an end. What the Congress should do when they come back next week is make it absolutely clear, no timetable, no funding. And there should be no further excuses. The Congress needs to stand their ground. They had a mandate from the American people in the election in November in 2006 and they need to meet that mandate."

Invoking the second anniversary of Katrina, Edwards said another surge in Baghdad is not what America needs. "We need a surge in New Orleans."

Edwards also attacked Hillary Clinton once again on the lobbying issue. "That system has to change," Edwards said. "I don't think anybody should defend that system, whether it is Senator Clinton or anybody else. I think the system needs to be changed. There is nobody in this audience who thinks the way Washington works today is working for them. I am absolutely certain about that."

On poverty, Edwards lamented that the economic growth over the last five years has only benefited the richest Americans. In combating poverty, Edwards called for (1) truly universal health care; (2) a higher raise in the minimum wage; (3) an expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit and removal of its marriage penalty; (4) the strengthening of workers' rights to organize unions in work places; and (5) strong national predatory lending laws. All of these items clearly cost money, and Edwards proposed paying for health care specifically by cutting Bush's tax cuts. He did mention how he would pay for the other changes.

Edwards borrowed a line from his wife Elizabeth regarding his stance on healthcare. "If you are shopping for a presidential candidate and they come before you and they tell you they have a health care plan and you find out that health care plan is not universal, then you should make them explain to you what man, and what woman, and what child in America is not worthy of healthcare?" He furthered the sentiment, stating if a candidate isn't for truly universal health care, the voter "ought to be looking for another candidate."

On a different note, Edwards took an aggressive stance on nuclear weapons in Iran and Pakistan. "I want to be the President of the United States that initiates and leads an effort, over time, but an effort to actually rid the planet of nuclear weapons ... America will have to lead the way and I'm not short sighted about this. I don't think it can be done overnight. I know it will take time, it will take leadership, and it will take cooperation from other countries."

Carter, an alumnus of GSW, told the audience Edwards is a "candidate whom I really admire." While he did not officially endorse Edwards, he came pretty close with his bold prediction that the presidential hopeful "has a very good chance to do well."

"I can say without equivocation,” Carter said, “that no one who is running for president has presented anywhere near as comprehensive and accurate a prediction of what our country ought to do in the field of environmental quality, in the field of healthcare for those who are not presently insured, for those who suffer from poverty and with a special attention to a subject he knows quite well, and that is the rural areas of America.”

Time to give it up Mr Edwards.  Go Hillary !!
"Good thing that the economic growth he talked about benefited him." (kinda snarky that, eh, First Read?)

I think it IS a good thing John Edwards has personally benifited from the Bush tax cuts. It costs alot of money to run for the Presidency. If Edwards is elected he will make a real, positive, difference in millions of people's lives. Maybe something good will come out of Bush's cutting millionaires' taxes after all.

That's well and good, about the mandate, but get real, things change.  That's what gets me about people being so upset of candidates admitting, recently, that there has been some progress in Iraq when they said some time ago that there wasn't.  Things change every day.  As a strong Dem., I would love to see us win everything we want in that damn war but if we CAN'T, thank I say get out.  If we can, without loosing another 3500 people, then for God's sake, "get er done".
Carter was there you say?  Edwards must truly being getting desperate. Did the ex-prez have any anti-semitic words of encouragement?

Some people just belong in a home.
America get on the Edwards bandwagon.  He is the man with the best solutions for our country.
Labor Day is in 5 days. That means the campaign starts in earnest going forward. hang on folks. It's about to get even hotter than it already is.
Hell, even though I'm a Hillary supporter, I would go for any of the Dems.  I think Edwards would be great too, but I don't think he can win in the GE.

As was said, it's about to start getting hotter. When that happens, I hope we see a campaign from Hillary like this country has never seen before.  She's not perfect, but I think it would be great to see someone in there that can play as mean and as hard as the Repubs have gotten to.  I'm sure living with Mr. Hillary, she's learned how to say NO.
Edwards gets it.  JRE beats all the repug candidates with bigger margins than all the other democratic candidates.  On a side note isn't time america moves away from the Clinton v reput wars.  It is time to reach out to the future and make this country even greater.  JRE is optimistic and is working for americans.
GREAT.  A WOMAN WHO WANTS TO BE AS MEAN AS A MAN AND A MAN WHO WANTS TO BE AS PRETTY AS A WOMAN.
Edwards is lost in the haze of a far left fantasy land.  If he had revealed  his socialist leanings much earlier, he never would have been elected to the Senate from NC. I don't think he could win ANY office in NC now.  Bill Mack
Hillary will bring out every Republican wannabe to not necessarily vote for the Republican candidate but to vote against HER! Edwards is the only one that will bring moderate independents out to vote democratic! Go Edwards!!!!
John Edwards said, "The Congress needs to stand their ground. They had a mandate from the American people in the election in November in 2006 and they need to meet that mandate."

To that I say, "Amen, Brother!"
John Edwards is our guy! He is the BEST we have...
Hilary Clinton is a dangerous woman.  I believe she ould kill her own child if it meant getting what she wants.

CARTER DOES NOT ECOMONICS HE ALMOST RUINED THIS COUNTRY
thanks mr. bush for keeping the war in there place.i think if al gore or the johnny boys would have been prez. we would be bowing to the united nations right now and the usa would have been wishing bush would have been prez. but you'll get hillary or obama yall be at each other necks yall can't even get along with each other.it'll be fun watching yall dems
Glad to see you edited out the snarky line. Also, I think you meant to say, " He did (NOT) mention how he would pay for the other changes." Just trying to be helpful. I make mistakes too.
Congress has failed miserably to meet the high hopes of the people like me who voted them in.
I am a yellow dog Democrat, but I will make my decision when I see who votes nay on Bush's recent suggestion that he wants 50 billion more for a "war" in Iraq. He or she who equivocates on furhter funding for the on going death and disabling of US personnel and continued death and destruction of Iranians and Iran itself has lost my trust. Bring the 50 Billion request to a vote and we can all see the group from whom to select as our candidate. Ms Pelosi cannot do it herself with the over 40% Republican sychophants and the over 40% Republican sychphantic Senators. We must override Presidential vetoesand focus on the real apparant stagnation in current Congressional action.
Boy, what a reccomendation! A floundering left wing ambulance chasing hypocrite being embraced by the most colassal White House failure of the the twentieth century, and one of the five worst in American History! GOP strategists better get smart and not onlt tie the Carter albatross around "Breck Girl" Edwards' neck, but play up the Hillary-Obama "endorsement" by Fidel Castro. Dosen't this sound like one nice, left wing, anti-American happy family? Liberals, don't feed me this bilge about "your patriotism being impugned." You impugne it yourself every time you open your mouths.
How refreshing...  If Jimmy Carter is standing up for Edwards, so am I.  Carter was and is the most intelligent and honest person to hold the office of President we have seen in the last few decades.  With a sincere endorsement from Carter, it is now time to support John Edwards.
gn lars, Denver / everyone knows edwards is the only dem that can win the general election, you hillary paid supporters are pathetic, you fool no one
Its time for America to understand that we can't win a war in Iraq with our conventional thinking. We fight by rules our enemy fights with no regards for anything or anyone and especially no rules. We either need to fight them on their level or get out. We can not win no other way.
gn lars, Denver / "I'm sure living with Mr. Hillary, she's learned how to say NO."

it is truely a shame that she has not learned to say no to corrupt pac and lobbyist money, you imposters need to dig deeper
Some people should awaken from their dogmatic slumbers and think for themselves, starting with Mr. Allby.  President Carter wrote a book about Israel that doesn't flatter the Israeli government, and he suddenly is susceptible to the charge of being anti-semitic.  Perhaps Mr. Allby could explain why being critical of the Israeli government for (1) systematically driving Palestinians out of Israel and (2)annexing through placement of Jewish settlements the land it conquered in 1967, which Israel has refused to surrender for over 40 years despite numerous UN sanctions demanding it do so, and (3)for carving up the land it has yet to annex completely to create an apartheid state separating Palestinians not only from Israeli Jews but also from other Palestinians living in Israel means Carter is anti-semitic.

I'm sure AIPAC, the American-Israeli Political Action Committee, the most powerful lobbyists in Washington who spread America's aid to Israel around to members of the House and the Senate, believes that even a single word critical of Israel means the utterer is anti-semitic, but that's not what more rational people who have examined Israel's history, like Carter, have concluded.

It's about time that AIPAC's propaganda is finally being challenged.
Isn't a former president even appearing with a candidate sort of an endorsement?

I really don't agree with Edwards on ridding the planet of nuclear weapons. Its a bit of an understatement to say it would take cooperation from other countries. The technology is out there. Just don't see any way for that to work.

And politically I don't think it would be a good position for the general election, if he were to win the nomination.
Keep Clinton, Obama, and Biden in the senate as they would be more polarizing in the G.E.. If not Gore, I think Edwards would have a good shot at winning with Richardson as a running mate. An easterner and westerner. A good looking smart married man with an intelligent experience hispanic catholic elder statesman. An endorsement from a true christian like Jimmy Carter might even get a few WWJD christians to swing back to the party that actually cares about the average American.
Edwards is an intellegent guy, thats what im looking for.Universal healthcare,im all for it.If you have a right to a free lawyer if you cant afford one,why dont we have a right to national healthcare? Im very ashamed that bush is suppose to be our leader, more ashamed the the american people voted twice for him.We need intelegent leadership,Edwards i beleive will be the next president.
When you start a general election with a 47% unfavorable (Hilary's CONSISTENT number), you have basically no shot to win, let alone govern.

Take a look at the GE numbers for both this race and previous.  Edwards was, is, and will be the best match-up for Dems against all of the Republican front runners.

Do some more research on how candidates tend to fare when they have high negatives.  It isn't pretty.

Want another four years of Republican rule?  Vote Clinton
for those of you who think Edwards can't win in the general elections... check out the head to head polls... Hillary either ties or wins in the GE... and Obama doesn't do much better against the top Republicans... Edwards on the other hand, comes close to double digit percentages against the top GOP candidates... he is by far the most electable Dem... now we just need to get over all the hype of Hillary... and realize she will lose us the election... and we cannot have 4 more years of another republican... Karl Rove as much as i despise him, is right about Clinton... if she wins the primary she will NEVER win the general election.
While not a Democrat, I do believe that only Edwards or Gore could win in the general election.  Unfortunately, the Hillary and Obama folks are living a pipe dream.  If the Dems really want to win, they will nominate Edwards or Gore.
Bush said in some of his speeches that as long as he is President he will not pull out of Iraq - word of law? A former president of the USA cannot be elected for more than 2 terms, but it does not say that a former president cannot be appointed to office (like, our new-president can appoint a former president to the office of vice-president - agree? H. Clinton and the next person behind her do not see eye-to-eye, not mentioning any names - that would be a disaster if this were to happen (that is if H.C., wins for the Democrats).
It's good to see that at least one of the candidates hasn't sold out.  The other candidates all have big money people running them, meaning they're not pulling out of any wars any time soon.  It's too profitable.

Hil even has the current healthcare establishment giving her money - so we're not gonna see a good change in that department with her.

If you want healthcare when you're company stops offering it, and you want to avoid perpetual war, you should think about getting behind Edwards.

Oh, and duh, of course 9/11 was a conspiracy.
so edwards is on stage with the biggest clown we ever had in the white house. i agree, he is desperate, besides being the biggest phony ever to run for president.
Bush has got to be the worst in histroy. He spends our money on wars and the rich. While we the people
slave to pay for they'er luxury and wars.
If you look at the near future you may make a differance. In the long term, the only thing that matters is your soul and where it's going when you die. Believe me the end is coming. Just look around.
Flooding,earthquakesand hurricanes.
There is a contract that expires between Israel and the U.N. The protection will be gone. The year is 2014. Less than 7yrs. Whats coming? I myself don't want to be here. I pray that the BIBLE is true. That when Jesus returns we'll be gone in a heart beat.
A handsome man will be running the earth. Beware!
In the meantime, I like Edwards and Obama hope they win.
John Edwards has many good notions, but as we've sadly and tragically learned from the experience of GW, we need true executive leadership--not another puppet figure.
Amy B - you think Edwards is spending his own money to run for President?  That is so cute.

He's actually using his tax cut money to pay for cheap and affordable landscapers at his estate in Tennessee.
When a candidate needs a bozo like Jemmy Carter to back him up, he's in deep trouble. I guess Lil Johnie Reid won't be getting the nomination...
Listen up AMERICA this great country sure as hell can not afford to have Hillary Clinton as our president, one clinton was enough. Need I say more with out bashing, America needs a great communicator who will not bend to political or media pressure and lead this great nation back to glory days. Neither party right now can convince me of what's in store for our nation. GOD HELP US!
I'm glad I like what Edwards is saying, because it is evident with recent elections where the RNC ran Elizabeth Dole out of town and nude white women motioned "Call Me" to the black gongressional candidate in TN, that America has not progressed enough to elect a black or female president. If the Democrats have any chance at all of winning the majority of independants and some moderate Republicans (required by the math), it will be with Edwards.
On the War In Iraq: Many ask, what happened to the country that led the world to victory in erope and the Pacific in WWI and WWII. Aside from the fact that there was world wide support for both WWI and II, we see now that it is far easier to drive an occupying force out of someone elses country thatn to occupy a country. Also evidenced in Korea, Vietnam, Afganastan (Russians) and even France in WWII. If we had never shown up, Germany would have continued to suffer losses from the French Resistance and the English until they finally gave up just like russia did in Afganastan an we did in Vietnam and Korea. The war, defeating the Iraqi army was easy. We had the bigger force and technologically surperior weapons. Occupation requires a relative small number of "good guys" limited in action by the "good guy code" to control an insurgency hiding amongst millions of innocents who don't like you ery much since you killed their father, husband, brother, cousin, etc.. the next question is, how do you resolve thousands of years of religious differences, tribal fudes and gang land power struggles. Sadam did it by throwing out the "good guy code", killing and terrorizing anyone who deposed him, heavily arming his followers (ever wonder where all those guns and explosives came from)and keeping the masses just content enough to tolerate him ( there were not a lot of starving Iraqis inthe pre war videos). The insurgents know this and will do anything to prevent resolution of religious differences, fuel tribal fudes and destroy what little infrastructure we try to build back to maintain an angry and hungry populous.
One loser standing next to another BIG loser.
Usually when Republicans attack Democratic candidates it raises my ire and I feel protective towards them. I don't get defensive when people criticize Edwards, which I think might be why he's my choice. My feeling is he can protect himself, he's a very sharp guy, he's a fighter, he's dogged in pursuing his goals, and ultimately, that means he can beat the Republicans. And once elected, he would be an aggressive, savvy and hands on President, promoting One America. That's what I want.
C Mayer, I agree.  I think a lot of us are waiting to see how the vote goes down on the additional $50 billion request for shrub's failed war.  Anyone voting against withdrawal, against aid for disabled vets, or for additional funding of this war loses my vote.  Many pundits suggest that since it's August, no one is paying attention.  I would disagree.  We're paying attention, we're mad as hell, now do something, Congress - both Democrats and obstructionist Republicans!  This is not about party loyalty, it's about our brave men and women in uniform who you continue to play as pawns in your own political ambitions.

No - any person named or elected to the VP position must meet the same requirements as those of the President position. As Mr. Bush has already served 1 and 1/2 years as president, he is not allowed to ever hold the office again. Since the VP has to be able to take the office of the presidency, Bush could never be eligible for the VP position. (As if that were ever a consideration for him to begin with.)
"Sweaters"---"Malaise"----"long gas lines"----an economy in the tank---Just what we need: another Carter. AND, pretty boy Edwards wants to eliminate our "big stick."  FRED, please, rescue us BEFORE we have to go through a repetition of that one term fiasco
jan, amarillo, you are one sick demented person when you make a comment that Hillary would kill her own child to get what she wants, that's the most vile comment that's been posted yet.
The U.S. is not a socialist state (see http://tinyurl.com/2znnvl). No one is entitled to be given a house, car, food or health care, etc. If we want these things, we have to earn them.  The government does not earn money. Perhaps some of us should take a civics class and learn about America.  We all have to labor for what we want.  For those who need help there are the charities and state programs.  We need to fix the health care issue but we cannot fix it unless we know how it is broken.  For the answer, please see http://www.InteliOrg.com/
Again, I continue to see the same people who attack the very idea of polling, point to Senator Clinton's negative POLL numbers to denigrate her electibility, and former Senator Edwards' head-to-head POLL numbers to validate his chances.

Call it tunnel-vision, call it statistical schizophrenia, or whatever you choose, but if you accept the validity of one poll, it is difficult to argue against the validity of all of those other polls.

Van
with her husband in tow and Carville on speed dial I am confident in Hillary's ability to be mean and divert people form realizing what she is really about.

Also, do you really want the worst president in US history standing next to you at a campaign stop?  Please throw in Mondale, Ted Kennedy and a life sized cut-out of Tip O'neal during those stops so the country can be reminded of what happens when democrats have complete control.....double digit inflation, double digit un-employment and a foriegn policy that truly has people around the world laughing at us.         BTW..didn't we reach some wonderful "agreements" with  middle east thugs back then?
