Clinton 'surprised' by Hsu

Posted: Thursday, August 30, 2007 1:11 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
Clinton said today she was "surprised by the news" that Clinton fund-raiser Norman Hsu has an outstanding arrest warrant out for him, and added that after verifying the information, her campaign "returned his money."

“We will continue to analyze all contributions and take action if that's warranted,” Clinton said during a joint press conference with New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer to discuss the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, known as SCHIP. “And I wish Mr. Hsu well in dealing with the problems he's confronting.”

VIDEO: NBC's Deputy Political Director Mark Murray offers his first read on the Democrat's fugitive donor.

A reporter pressed on, asking Clinton about problems during her husband’s presidency with donors like Johnny Chung. "I don't think it's analogous at all," Clinton replied, "I think we take these one by one as they come up. When you have as many contributors as I'm fortunate enough to have, we do the very best job we can based on the information available to us to make appropriate vetting decisions and this one was a big surprise to everybody."

Spitzer, attempting to return to the planned topic, intervened. "I don't think we need any more questions on that issue," he said. "Every campaign vets donors as effectively and as efficiently as can be done. This is somebody who as the senator said, which was a surprise to everybody, had an open bench warrant from 17 years ago. I think it's a fair question to ask, was Senator Clinton's campaign, or any campaign, supposed to be doing better than the authorities in California -- who theoretically had an open warrant for this guy. They didn't do anything. Come on guys, let’s get real."

ON SCHIP
Spitzer chastised the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for denying his state's application to include families who make up to 400 percent of the federal poverty level, arguing that amount of money is not considered much in New York State. Clinton also attacked the Bush administration, repeating her statement that these children and families are "invisible" to them and calling the rising number of uninsured children during this administration "unforgivable."

"For the President to say he will veto an expansion to the Children's Health Insurance Program is bad enough," Clinton said. "For his administration, in the stealth of night, as the governor said, last Friday, to come out with proposed regulations that would truly turn the clock back is absolutely beyond anyone's imagination. So, there they were, last Friday, looking for a way to launch a sneak attack on the children of America and their hard working families. The President is deliberately trying to undermine what we have done in New York and what a number of states have done, to meet the moral, economic, and healthcare needs of our children. …

"I'm going to do everything I can to get our bill out of Congress, to get it sent to the President, to dare him to veto it, to say, here's a bipartisan bill that expands coverage. Let's see where you stand on that. For him to say everyone has access to healthcare in America because everyone can go to an emergency room is the height of irresponsibility."

Spitzer also pledged to keep fighting. "New York State will bring a litigation if we do not see movement on the part of the Bush administration," he said. "We are happy to go to court. What they are doing is, we believe, illegal."

400 percent of poverty level? that's what, near 100k? So if I live in NY, I can drop my family coverage and put the kids on this stupid program, which will take money from Medicare?

Meanwhile, Senator Clinton doesn't see Hsu and Chung as analagous? She'll need a better defense than that; I'm not sure this will go away that quickly.
They always have an excuse!!! This is why these paper hanging S.O.B's get elected. Now the court should slam the door on this paper hanger and throw away the key!!! This is part of why the moral content of our nation has gone to hell!! we put up with eight years of deceptions and scandal from these paper hanging Clintons and the nation needs to understand this is BullSh!t ,, We need not yesterdays scandals , this is a scandal and she was caught ""Again""!!!!

America must draft a one who has shown real and moral leadership, not this self serving crap!!! I want to puke on my key board as enough is enough!!!!!
Hillary Clinton returned "his money" (Hsu's)....

she of course neglects to mention she's keeping all

the money from Hsu's fundraisers.

The Clinton's continue to be misleading.

Hillary Clinton cannot win the general.

NO MORE CLINTONS IN THE WHITEHOUSE!
400% is $82,600.00 for a family of 4. That is making too much money for that family to get welfare money. It's twice as bad when that money is taken from Medicare/Medicaid funds. Sure find a way to get decent healthcare to poor folks, but 83G's a year ain't poor.
But then the point of Hillery's socialist agenda is to make us all dependent on the federal government. NOT to make government dependent on us.
Okay.....so the guy had an arrest warrant for him. Big deal. I'm sure politicians don't do background checks on everyone who either donates money to their campaigns or raises contributions for them.
How else do you explain the 7.2 million dollars worth of campaign contributions that Republican candidates took from convicted criminals during the 2002 election cycle?
Hillary has offered to contribute the money to charity, which more than makes up for any oversight regarding this guy's background. It's "much to do, about nothing."
I'll be surprised if 75% the posts on this thread  aren't slanderous, hate-filled rants. What won't be surprising will be the tag lines of the ranters.

When you receive tens of millions of dollars in contributions, as at least 8-10 of the candidates from both parties have already, there will be instances of the, "bundler's", being less than savory characters.

When another candidate's (and it could be yours.) contributions come into question, it will be interesting to see if the reactions and rhetoric are the same.

Van
They'll be justifying euthanasia of the elderly and sick "for the children" soon.

This is really curious...I thought people who were around Presidents, Ex-presidents etc. were all vetted by the secret service.  Considering how many fund raiser he has given and he is a Hillraiser, he was never screened by SS.  Somebody called the Treasury Dept these guys are lax on their job !!

Or maybe they did know and didn't care...after all it was MONEY  !!!

Give us a break are the MSM buying this excuse?
Has America got enough Problems?? Problems which the Washington Paper Hangers have invented! Our youth being exploited again in a senseless war, meager shame of voting to continue supporting a civil war. No solutions which are valid to address why we continue to elect a failed Paper hanger who is self serving to their agenda, we have watched America being stripped of moral and ethical cotent. The present paper hangers have not solutions which bring change, they present typical Washington dialogue which has two sides, self serving and useless waste of the tax dollar.

What was the amount of man power hours and tax dollars spent on the Clinton scandals?? What did America gain from all the scandal?? Like this war being now reflected as Vietnam , Today announced Clintons caught accepting monies from a wanted felon??
Are we going to see the Clintons again turn the White House into a sewer drain.

I need to puke!
83g's is rich where I'm from..but considering the cost of living in some areas you may have to revise your statement RH.
I need to puke!

Straight UP /AZ (Sent Thursday, August 30, 2007 2:27 PM)

You have.

Van
I think her statment was good enough. If the police didn't stop this guy, what do you expect a campaign to do as far as vetting? Just do what every politician has done and donate the money.
The Clintons have always been corrupt. Just when we thought we had the Repugnantcans on the ropes with their scandals-a-day politicos and officials, here comes our own sleazey Clintons to act as the Demos countervailing equivalent. NO MORE sleazy and corrupt Clintons.
J Merle. When you have come down off of your partisan Olympus, you will be reminded that the Clintons have a long history of accepting monies from criminals and other shady characters. In her husbands day it was people like cocaine kingpin Jorge Cabrenas, the Riadys, Charlie Trie and Johnny Chung, and the Gambino crime family. Hillary is getting ready to go to court[Sept. 7 in Los Angeles] as a portion of a lawsuit aimed at her for accepting illegal campaign monies from Tinseltown bigwigs. Apart from this, both of the Clintons refuse to make public, monies for speaking fees her husband made while in Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, including Dubai,Qatar, and Bahrain. Ground Zero for al Qaeda and the bin Ladens whose loot and influence can be demonstrably traced to members of the royal family[Saud],who have bankrolled the Clintons. Such seedy dealings are de rigure for the Clintons. Why a substantial portion of America demands an individual who will be as divisive to this nation as a Bush or a Bill, thus continuing the fracturing of this country, to the total advantage to its enemies, is beyond the ken of this poster.
Nope. No revision. If you make $83,000.00 a year, in America anywhere, you absolutly do not need to qualify for federal welfare. Be that healthcare, or food stamps. Period.
SLOW NEWS DAY ? OK, NOW GO FIND SOME "REAL" NEWS.
And if your pulling 83 grand a year, you will be in a job that offers at least basic healthcare.
Good point Lyn...where was the Secret Service?  What does she mean she didn't know?  She surrounds herself with felons and she doesn't know?  This wasn't some passing contributor on her website, this was a major fundraiser.
Ah, the Hillary mouthpieces are in full force spinning for the Old Bird.  For someone with "35 years of experience" she seems to lack good judgment.
Last week, Detroit attorney Geoffrey Fieger, best known for his high-profile defense of assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian, was charged with conspiring to channel $127,000 in illegal contributions to the 2004 presidential campaign of John Edwards.

Why is media elites harrasing Hillary for the sin of other while turning cheek when it happens to other candidates. Bunch of hypocrites.

Obama and others also receive donations from Mr. Hsu. Politicians have no control over the actions of those who donates money to their campaign. All these smear attempts will fail as usual. Thank you.
Abolish all contributions except federal campaign dollars, I don't care if it is Dem or Repuk.  The problem with our politcal system is freaking money (GREED).
Republicans are so desperate for any hint of scandal to shift the focus to democrats, they will grasp at straws, and that is just what they are doing as evidenced by some of these bloggers - grasping at straws.  Hey, why don't you go find a bathroom in Union Station and find some real problems?
John, I agree with you in part.  Candidates have no control of the actions of their contributors.  But to say a person that is this close to you for this long and not just your average contributor.  This gave has raised over 1million for her senate campaign and is now a Hillraiser pledging to raise 100k.  You know these people and at the very least they have Secret Service protection and people are routinely vetted that are that close to a President and his wife.

So HOW did they not KNOW????
John Rolands, Houston, TX / edwards refused to take money from Mr. Hsu., nuff said
RH - That's not necessarily true.  You can pull in twice that much as an attorney, and if you work for a small enough firm they are not required to offer health insurance or other benefits.  I have a friend who works for a small firm with 5 attorneys and a couple of paralegals.  They don't offer benefits.
"facts" are slippery little devils; one person's facts are another persons...
but, can we agree that the Clinton have known Hsu for quite a long time and that over this extended period Hsu has sent hundreds of thousands their way...does this strike anyone that Hsu is just one of the faceless donors that Hillary is honored to have...well, do y'a bub?
Lee Holmes,
Oh PLEASE come down off the soap-box, take a deep breath and slap some cold water on your face! It would seem you are rather deleriously trying to say that the Clintons alone represent all that is evil with campaign financing today.
I would remind you that our current "resident" at 1600 Pa. Avenue, George W. Bush, accepted close to $50,000.00 in illegal campaign contributions from financier Tom Noe, and Noe is currently serving a two years sentence in Federal Prison for his part in a money laundering sheme which sent that money to Bush.
This isn't the only case of "dirty money" that went to Bush/Cheney in either 2000 or 2004.
Jack Abramoff contributed more than $6,600.00 to Bush's re-election campaign which had to be given back. (But, not until it was publicly disclosed that the money came from Abramoff.)
Furthermore, almost a year after the eelction was over, the F.E.C. admonished Bush/Cheney 2004 for taking money from illegal sources, though the story was supressed in the media.
Then of course we have the whole Tom DeLay money laundering scheme and his upcoming trial on those charges, and the FEC investigation into A Beverly Hills Fund rasing scheme which netted "Ahhhhnald" more than 100K.
Oh yeah and while we're on the topic let's remember to mention the 7.2 million dollars that went to Republican candidates in 2002 from people with criminal records.
So.....PLEASE don't try to do the "lets' demonize the Clintons'" thing with me.
Cause it dont work here.
Of course it is impossible to check up on every donor. But you would think that she would check on the ones making the largest donations. The Hillraisers are those who pledge to raise $100,000 for Clinton, of which Hsu is one. There can't be so many of those that they can't make sure they are legit.

That goes for every candidate, not just Clinton.
....and one more thing Lee.........don't EVEN go ther about the House of Saud when the Bush family has it's collective head up Prince Bandar's rectum!
Well, duh  --  she told you flat out where she was at with that "Sopranos" campaign ad.

That is how one practices deception in this Best Of All Modern Ages: Just put the stark truth right out there and watch the yokels laugh it off as some kind of far-fetched gag.

And then later, when the populace complains, you find an artful way of saying (like The Snake in Al Wilson's memorable song): "'Oh shut up, silly woman,' said the reptile with a grin. 'You knew damn well I was a snake before you let me in ... '"

Eight more years of the same old shit? Angels and Ministers of Faith defend us ...
Here is a rant for all. I hear Clinton this ,and Bush that .Has anyone stopped to think they'er all polititians .I do not presume to base my morals or my personal beliefs on a politician reguardless of thier political reflection. Again a man or woman is seen by thier actions not words .Clinton the 1st overall did well for America as by what was seen by the overall global population has seen , Bush is doing piss poor by global population standards ,but what does it matter when they all change thier political party line as they change thier underwear. They all recieve campaign contributions from the same corrupt corporate entities ;eg. law firms ,real estate, big oil, prescription drug, and lobbyist all. Know knowing that who do you think owns thier loyalty?
Doesn't matter what crimes the Clinton's commit as long as we get our power back.
Security service? Even the whole of New York police department or any other law enforcement agency are not aware that Mr. Hsu is wanted for for his past. This is just a smear campaign. The same standard is not applied to other candidates.

Detroit attorney Geoffrey Fieger is facing a jail time for donations made to Edwards campaign, nobody is making noise about that. Other candidate also received contribution from Mr. Hsu including Obama.

Hiliary was surprised... you're joking, right?
Yes, this doesn't suprise me at all. Another Clinton in the White House would be a mess. Neither one of them are reputable and seem to always be up to something. VOTE NO FOR HILARY!!!
Gee Lee...how far back do you want to go.  George H Bush and Barbara's grandfathers who were buds sold Nazi war bonds in America.  Nothing is black and white.
George H Bush has long been great friends with the Saudi's.  Prince Bandar is considered a family member.  That is until he got so pissed off at junior he quit as Ambassor to the U.S.  Any idea how much money George H. made making speeches in the middle east?   Neither party gives a damn about you and me so stop acting like the Repubs do!
Watch out, the Pile On is in full force.  It will make the win all that much sweeter.( BTW, hope it's Hillary, but whoever the Dem is, that's the way it's going down.)

The Secret Service, yeah I'm sure they investigate every big donor. Besides he was wanted for a nonviolent crime, off the usual SS radar. An even better theory.  They knew, but didn't tell her. After all, they work for the President

Why am I even defending against such drivel?  At least it's refreshingly individualistic and somewhat quirky.  Not an RNC usual talking point that most slavishly regurgitate.

And just to carry this to the point of absurdity, why didn't the SS ferret him out when he gave big bucks to Kerry, or 5K to Obama?  I also heard that he gave 32K to Bush to hedge his bets and slept in the White House! Is that OK? It was rumored Bush's dog slept at the foot of the bed, he was so well liked. Do you think Bush would let his beloved dog consort with a fugitive criminal, even for a big donation.  OOPS, maybe so. Naw, not even Bush is that heartless, or is he?  Maybe only with a nonviolent criminal.

On second thought, maybe heads should roll at the SS.  After all the Prexy might have been in  dire danger from a conman and even more so, his dog was. But then, this dovetails nicely with the idea that they did know and he knew.

Go ahead and try to divert attention from Craig.  I hope the issue lingers on like stink on a skunk.  I pray the esteemed Senator is brave/brazen/dumb enough to try to run for reelection.  It will divert much need money from other more Democratic winnable races and maybe even give someone a shot at beating him.  After all, Idaho did once have a pretty darn good Democratic Senator by the name of Frank Church.
J Merle, Let me make sure i get your point ...because Bush and the republicans did it, then it's OK for Democrats to be just as corupt.

So everthing we have yelled and screamed about the last 8 years was just for show.

Then we should expect it to be OK if they do it for another 4-8 years.

Will it ever stop !!!
J. Merle Stanley, Westchester, NY / saying that hillary and bush have the same amount of integrity is an interesting way to bolster your claim that hillary should be the next president, but it does clarify that clinton is and has been part of the problem in washington for some time, as I have said before there is not much difference between hillary and the repub candidates when you closely examine her, thanks for proving my point
Clinton, surprised?  Probably true.  Surprised she got caught.  The money laundering scheme was thought to be fail-safe.

Time for "Our Gal" to put on the tap-shoes.  Worse comes to worst, bring in Bill, and say that the Rupublicans do it too.

HC: "If you need money laundered, I'm your gal!!"
your average democrat / "Doesn't matter what crimes the Clinton's commit as long as we get our power back."

yikes
notice how the republican machine hasn't made a peep about any of the negative little hiccups the clinton campaign has experienced lately? it is as obvious as the nose on your face that the repubs want her nominated so they can rip her to shreds before the general election, dead lady walking
MK, what are you smoking over there, hemp? You are obviously hallucinating.
I never said that Hillary and Bush have the "same amount of integrity," and I disagree with you concerning who's the problem in Wasghington.
Thank you for proving MY point that Hillary-Haters will bend other people's words, bend the truth, spin, and all out LIE just to demonize her.
MK....who do YOU support for the Presdidency in '08?"
yikes ,is right. I can not believe what I read in the blog rooms .Do any of you realize how polarized you all are? "We the people" ,this means AMERICANS .This is a phrase that 1st and foremost should resonate in every one of you.Do the lot of you not realize how the political elite have manipulated you into back biting ,nashing ,and over all hating the other side. Its so bad that you do not even realize you do not matter! The political elite care about money ,not your sons or daughters in IRAQ. money; not your house morgage ,or insurance rates. Money; not your likes or dislikes. They manipulate situations to create polarization so you will not see real issues . Those said issues are going to cost you in the long run. The elite do not plan for a day or month ,but in decades .You plan for tomorrows blog , or where you will buy the cheapest gas! Get a grip AMERICA "WE the people" united WE stand ,devided we are fleeced.
It would seem to me MK, that people who HATE Hillary don't care whether the allegations they make about her are true, or just plain made up.
As long as its' something that might sew doubt in someone else's mind about Hillary, you'll say it.
It doesn't matter whether it's a balls out LIE or not.
You'll say anything, spew any sort of virtiol you can come up with, and/or repeat any lie if there's even the slightest chance that it might cause someone else to hate Hillary as much as you hate her.
That's sad statement about the honesty, and the veracity of the people who oppose Senator Clinton.
MK, I'll ask you again....who do YOU support in 2008? For some reason you don't want to tell us.
Everyone is focusing on the arrest warrant.  That isn't the real problem.  The real problem is the low income family (and potentially how many others in a similar income level) among the contributors he bundled who donated many thousands of dollars.  It isn't realistically possible apparently for the money to have been theirs.  Where did the money really come from and who knows about using "substituted" donors to hide money coming in -- The real problem is the contributions and whether or not they were legal.
MK supports Edwards...I think.  Or maybe anyone who doesn't have mommy parts?
