Clinton 'surprised' by Hsu

Posted: Thursday, August 30, 2007 1:11 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
Clinton said today she was "surprised by the news" that Clinton fund-raiser Norman Hsu has an outstanding arrest warrant out for him, and added that after verifying the information, her campaign "returned his money."

“We will continue to analyze all contributions and take action if that's warranted,” Clinton said during a joint press conference with New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer to discuss the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, known as SCHIP. “And I wish Mr. Hsu well in dealing with the problems he's confronting.”

VIDEO: NBC's Deputy Political Director Mark Murray offers his first read on the Democrat's fugitive donor.

A reporter pressed on, asking Clinton about problems during her husband’s presidency with donors like Johnny Chung. "I don't think it's analogous at all," Clinton replied, "I think we take these one by one as they come up. When you have as many contributors as I'm fortunate enough to have, we do the very best job we can based on the information available to us to make appropriate vetting decisions and this one was a big surprise to everybody."

Spitzer, attempting to return to the planned topic, intervened. "I don't think we need any more questions on that issue," he said. "Every campaign vets donors as effectively and as efficiently as can be done. This is somebody who as the senator said, which was a surprise to everybody, had an open bench warrant from 17 years ago. I think it's a fair question to ask, was Senator Clinton's campaign, or any campaign, supposed to be doing better than the authorities in California -- who theoretically had an open warrant for this guy. They didn't do anything. Come on guys, let’s get real."

ON SCHIP
Spitzer chastised the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for denying his state's application to include families who make up to 400 percent of the federal poverty level, arguing that amount of money is not considered much in New York State. Clinton also attacked the Bush administration, repeating her statement that these children and families are "invisible" to them and calling the rising number of uninsured children during this administration "unforgivable."

"For the President to say he will veto an expansion to the Children's Health Insurance Program is bad enough," Clinton said. "For his administration, in the stealth of night, as the governor said, last Friday, to come out with proposed regulations that would truly turn the clock back is absolutely beyond anyone's imagination. So, there they were, last Friday, looking for a way to launch a sneak attack on the children of America and their hard working families. The President is deliberately trying to undermine what we have done in New York and what a number of states have done, to meet the moral, economic, and healthcare needs of our children. …

"I'm going to do everything I can to get our bill out of Congress, to get it sent to the President, to dare him to veto it, to say, here's a bipartisan bill that expands coverage. Let's see where you stand on that. For him to say everyone has access to healthcare in America because everyone can go to an emergency room is the height of irresponsibility."

Spitzer also pledged to keep fighting. "New York State will bring a litigation if we do not see movement on the part of the Bush administration," he said. "We are happy to go to court. What they are doing is, we believe, illegal."

"The Clinton have always been currupt"

Jim Schlesinger; Choutean, Montana.

Well now, i am sure you have the FBI, The CIA and maybe Fredo's / Karl Rove's(warrentless anybody?) Files on the Clinton's. You must do, considering you were affirmative of their corruptness.

I beg to differ with the "[d]oesn't matter what crimes the Clinton's(sic) commit..."

We will only accept nonviolent crimes, Rove and Bush bashing permitted, and no going into restrooms and soliciting sex.

Some of you here are delusional and not just Republicans.  Do you think the present Republican candidates and their minions, over whom they of course have no control, will play by the Marquis of Queensburry's  rules.

Yes, by God we need someone who can play just as tough and mean, and rough and tumble with the worst of them.
In my estimation Hillary can do this and maybe Edwards.  I'm not sure Obama has the stomach for it and maybe he's better as the VP guy.

That's just about the only way we Dems will get our power back and to hell with Goody Two Shoes.  You just about have it right, MK.  Take no prisoners.

This ain't going to be a tea party.

I've been involved in Democratic politics since I was about 8 years old, from putting up yard signs to campaign manager/fund raiser and contributor, to state level candidate/office holder. I've been at it for a good while (Hint: I served during the Vietnam fiasco) and I consider the upcoming campaign on all levels, fm Pres to Dog Catcher, to be the most critical of my lifetime.
What is it with you Hillaryites that every time something "shady" comes up relative to her, you guys/gals start experiencing bowel movement that drives you off the deep end?
Nobody's perfect. The last thing I'll do is blame someone for something they had no control over. Hsu's a roach that likes currying favor by raising money for candidates in major elections. The problem is the holier than tou statements that are made by candidates about other candidates when something like this comes up. Then when it happens to them they whine and cry for MOMMY.
Ain't that something?

Yes, let's destroy what's left of our political system in order to save it. Let's get down and dirty! Although I fail to see what questionable campaign contributions have to do with Saving the Republic, or just exactly how they contribute to a President we can all get behind and even (dare I say it?) admire, I leave you with the following bit of dialog from "A Man for All Seasons"; and sincerely request that you consider the fact that when you accept the rationale for adopting the enemy's mind-set, tactics, and ethos, you have for all practical purposes become the enemy yourself.

WILLIAM ROPER: So, now you give the Devil bebefit of law!

SIR THOMAS MORE: Yes! What would you do? Cut a greast road through the law to get after the Devil?

ROPER: Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that!

MORE: Oh? And when the last law was down. and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's! And if you cut them down, and you're just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!

We will not get out of this shit-heap, y'all, by burrowing deeper into it.
That's sad statement about the honesty, and the veracity of the people who oppose Senator Clinton.

Almost as sad as the honesty, and the veracity of the people who stand with Senator Clinton.
Merle: You are being disingenous. My consistantly hammered-upon point is that the Business As Usual in Washington must stop. Hillary is not the progenitor of change. She is merely another chapter in a long series of What Is Wrong With America.

GAB: A big mouth does not make a big man [or woman]. My post never mentions the ''Repubs''. In others, however, the viewer may be witness to my detailed chronicling of GOP misdeeds and blunders. Yet Hillary would merely continue this cycle. The Nazis are a dead race. Yet Mr.Hsu is still wanted in California. Mr.GHW Bush has indeed, given speeches to the Saudis. SO has algore, and Bill Clinton as recently as this summer. If America is to indeed ''go forward'',it must break with the damaging chaff of the past. Thus far,all we are seeing is 1993-redux with the usual shady characters. Terry McAullife, who should be in a fed lockup for what he pulled with the TEAMSTERS. John Podesta, Howard Wolfson, and a galaxy of old-guard fellow Clintonistas that headed up one of the Democrat parties most crooked periods in its recent history. As we speak, Democrat lobbyists by the hundreds are converging on K St. to continue their bought-and-paid-for influence of American government. Of the Party,By the Party, and For the Party, which will enrich them and their stooge legislators, and ruin the rest of us.

When it comes to getting some Chinese money......

Hillary did learn from the best........

Merle is just looking for any kind of democrat leadership, since the state of New York offers none..

No wonder Hillary went up there........

She saw the state was lacking leadership.........

Only problem was.......

Her idea of leadership is more like Tony Soprano.....
WHAT TYPE OF ARREST WARRANT IS OUT FOR MR. NORMAN HSU?
NO ONE HEREIN HAS MENTIONED THE FACT(S). IS IT FOR A
MOVING VIOLATION? WHAT?
AFTER ALL, IT COULD NOT BE ALL THAT SERIOUS CONSIDERING THE STATEMENT MADE BY SENATOR H. CLINTON..
"AND I WISH MR. HSU WELL IN DEALING WITH THE PROBLEMS
HE'S CONFRONTING."
IF THE ALLEGATIONS ARE TRUE, AND MR.HSU IS CONVICTED
OF WHATEVER CRIME - IT SEEMS FAIR TO SAY AND MEAN THAT
MR.HSU HAS CAST A TAINTED SHADOW UPON THE SIGNIFICANCE
REGARDING THE HISTORIC STATUE AND CHARACTER PRESUMED BY THE ONE AND/OR ONE'S ASPIRING TO BE PRESIDENT OF
THE UNITED STATES.
AFTER ALL IS SAID AND DONE, EXACTLY WHAT IS MR. HSU'S
MOTIVE - IF IN FACT HE IS PROVEN TO BE A CRIMINAL.
BECAUSE IT IS A KNOWN FACT IN MODERN DAY AMERICA - THAT ONE OR OTHERS WHO DONATE TO A CANDIDATE EXPECT
SOMETHING IN RETURN OF EQUAL OR GREATER VALUE - BE IT
THE WEALTH THAT MONEY BRINGS OR THE POWER OF POLITICS.
NOT THAT THIS IS NECESSARILY A BAD THING - BUT THAT
AMERICA CAN DO A WHOLE LOT BETTER THAN EMPLOYING THE
CRIMINAL(S) FOR ITS GAINS. GAINS OF THIS CALIBER ULTIMATELY LACK THE CHARATER OF OUR FOUNDING FATHERS -
INCLUDING LINCOLN,TEDDY AND FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT,AND
RONALD REGAN!
ANYTHING LESS AND/OR IF A CADIDATE CHOOSES NOT TO PAY
ATTENTION TO DETAIL, OR IS SWAYED BY THE DECEITFUL
SMILES,NICETIES,AND PRETEND POLITENESS OF THOSE WHO HAVE EITHER ERASED,IGNORE,AND OR COULD CARE LESS WHO
THE FATHER OF THIS COUNTRY IS - OR WHO HOP ABOARD THE
CRIMINAL BANDWAGON - DO NOT DESERVE TO MARCH ALONG SIDE THE NEXT PERSON WHO MAY OR BECOMES THE PRESIDENT
OF THE UNITED STATES. THE BOTTOM LINE IS...
THE PRESIDENCY IS A SACRED OFFICE OF DUTY TO HONOR AND
COUNTRY. ANYONE ENTERING MUST FIRST FILL THE SHOES OF
THOSE MENTIONED ABOVE - AT THE VERY LEAST! IF THEY
CANNOT THEN DO NOT - OTHERWISE AMERICA'S TIME AND
HERITAGE IS A WASTE. AND, IF THE ONE WHO ENTERS THE
OVAL OFFICE (NOT NECESSARILY FOR THE FIRST TIME) CAN-
NOT DEFEND WHAT THE "FALLEN" HAVE FELL FOR - THEY SHOULD NOT BOTHER TO ENTER FOR THE FIRST TIME OR EVER
AGAIN. THIS IS THE ISSUE AT HAND FOR THE NEXT PRESIDENT - RESTORE THE NAMES OF WASHINTON AND LINCOLN
TO OUR FAITHFUL CALENDER, AND THE PLEDGE OF ALLIGENCE TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN OUR CLASS ROOMS ONLY THEN WILL WE BE ABLE TO DISCOVER AND/OR IDENTIFY WHO THE "DOMESTIC ENEMIES" ARE.
Hal in DC.....
First off your question .....
("...because Bush and the republicans did it, then it's OK for Democrats to be just as corupt.
So everthing we have yelled and screamed about the last 8 years was just for show.
Then we should expect it to be OK if they do it for another 4-8 years.
Will it ever stop !!!")
.....is completely NULL and VOID.
Hillary hasn't been accused, indicted, arrested, or convicted of ANYTHING here. One of her donors had a warrant out for his arrest. There is no requirement that mandates background checks on people who donate to political campaigns.
Therefore, this is neither hear fault, nor her repsonsibility.
But, the "we hate Hillary club" has chosen to try and get as much mileage out of this as they possibly can.
I'd like to know when THAT sort of thing is going to stop.(?) That is the kind of politics the republiCANTS have engaged in for the last 27 years.
So, simply because someone within our own party supports another candidate for the nomination, they go along with the yacking and screaming about something that Hillary had no control over?
When, oh when, will we get to a plateau where we run political campaigns on the abilities of OUR candidates, instead of the shortcomings of others, and when will we try to win elections, without personally destroying our opponants. Thats why I'd like to know.

JACK ABROMOFF JACK ABROMOFF JACK RIPMEOFF JACK JERKUOFF TALK ABOUT YOUR  TWO FACES JUST REMEMBER WHATS GOOD FOR THE GOOSE IS GOOD FOR THE GANDERKARL ROVE TAUGHT ME THAT"YOU CAN GO F YOURSELF<DONT WORRY CRAIG WILL DO IT OR VITTER OR FOELY HASSERT WHO ELSE KNEW AND KEPT IT QUIET.
Same old story, different candidate.  She took a play out of the republican play book.  I didn't know he was a crook.  Well, if we elect her we know things won't change.
Use of Bundlers Raises New Risks for Campaigns
By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
Published: August 31, 2007

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 — In amassing $52 million in campaign contributions in the first half of this year, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton relied on a platinum pyramid of 233 “Hillraisers,” including the movie director Steven Spielberg, the party powerbroker Vernon E. Jordan Jr., and the real estate mogul William C. Rudin.
Another, less famous name on the list, however, has proven a liability to Mrs. Clinton: Norman Hsu, a business executive who turned out to be wanted in connection with a fraud case in California.

Mr. Hsu came into the picture with the advent of bundlers, wealthy and well-connected surrogates who can collect stacks of campaign checks from friends, family members and associates.

The system is a byproduct of the $2,300 cap on individual contributions, which has led campaigns to ask their biggest supporters to go beyond simply making donations and to pass the hat. Pioneered in an organized way by George W. Bush in 2000, it has become increasingly important because of the 2002 campaign finance laws that closed the spigot of unrestricted “soft money” from corporations and other big donors through the political party campaign committees.

The six leading primary campaigns have listed a total of nearly 2,000 bundlers.

The reliance on bundlers has exploded this year because, for the first time in three decades, the major candidates are planning to turn down public financing in favor of raising and spending money without being subject to any limit.

But the proliferation of bundlers, and the ambitious fund-raising goals set out for them by cash-hungry campaigns, has opened the door to a host of embarrassing entanglements, including Mrs. Clinton’s ties to Mr. Hsu and President Bush’s connections to the jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Although Mr. Hsu is wanted for arrest because he failed to appear in court for a fraud case 15 years ago, he has not been accused of other wrongdoing. His lawyer has denied any campaign finance violations.

Still, by outsourcing the solicitation of individual donors to an ad hoc assemblage of the self-interested and the idealistic, the system has exposed campaigns to new risks.

It is harder for campaigns to be sure bundlers do not bring in money from illegal contributors.

And, campaign lawyers say it is virtually impossible for campaigns to ensure that wealthy bundlers are not, in effect, underwriting contributions from employees, friends or family.
Lawrence E. Bathgate II, a New Jersey lawyer who is a former Republican National Committee chairman and a bundler for Senator John McCain of Arizona, said campaigns were forced to rely on the judgments of surrogates.

“No candidates can know everybody who is out there raising funds for them,” Mr. Bathgate said. “They have to rely on the person who is part of their team, to make sure that person is being very judicious.”

Mrs. Clinton, of New York, is hardly the only current presidential candidate with a bundler who has had trouble with the law. Of the more than 500 bundlers recognized by Mr. Bush’s presidential campaigns, about a dozen have come under investigation for legal violations related to their business dealings. One was Mr. Abramoff, who is serving a prison sentence for bribery.

Another was Thomas Noe, an Ohio bundler, who pleaded guilty to embezzling state money and illegally laundering contributions through his employees.

Mitt Romney’s campaign for the Republican presidential nomination primary recently returned a $2,300 contribution from Alan B. Fabian, a Maryland bundler indicted on fraud and money laundering charges. The campaign has retained contributions Mr. Fabian solicited on its behalf.

Last week, Geoffrey Fieger, a lawyer best known for representing Dr. Jack Kevorkian in his trial for assisting suicides, was indicted on charges of illegally funneling more than $125,000 to the 2004 Democratic presidential campaign of John Edwards through straw donors.

Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, another Democratic contender, has given to charity more than $32,000 raised for his Senate campaigns and political action committee by Antoin Rezko, a bundler who was indicted last fall on charges of influence peddling at the Illinois Statehouse and fraud in business.

What is more, although it is illegal for a bundler to reimburse a contributor, bundlers often ask for contributions from people on their payroll. All the campaigns have reported concentrations of contributions from employees of companies where a top executive is a bundler. And it is standard practice for bundlers to encourage their lawyers, accountants, business partners and family members to make contributions.

They are all doing the same thing, so they are all guilty of the same thing. When it's obvious that this isn't something that the Hillary-haters can tar and feather her with, without their own choice, republican and democrat, getting dirty too, it will cease to be an issue.
Public financing is the only real answer. Let this be the LAST Presidential campaign where the specter of the moneymen and shady operators looms over the process.
If your candidate ISN'T for public financing of campaigns, ask why.

Van
J. Merle Stanley, Westchester NY / so I guess hillary taking money from criminals is OK? I suspect most people would think hillary getting caught taking money from criminals is not exactly a feather in her hat, best get used to trying to defend clinton on her less than honest activities because this is just the tip of the iceberg, in the coming days more and more details of her criminal activities will be released, if I were her I fade off into the sunset now and avoid the exposure of more dirty little hillary facts, maybe even prosecution, I hate to see another so-called high profile politician put behind bars
Liar!
...And Bathroom Stalker Craig was a big surprise to Romney, and Foley was a big surprise to the REpublicans, and Bil Clinton's affair was a big surprise to the Dems...Hillary, too, no doubt.  If you can't see what's right in front of you, you probably shouldn't have the power of the purse OR the Bomb.
Finally, someone I can agree with. Thanks "Z" for asking the real question, "Isn't there any real news to talk about?"

However, since the Repugs do not have anything else to do but "cry wolf," by talking about morality and integrity, then let's talk about Sen. Craig, Sen. Vittor, Carl Rove, Alberto Gonzales, Sec of Bumsfeld, General Pace, etc...

Oh yeah, that's right, if you do someting "in the name of supporting the USA," then all is forgiven, just ask Scooter, or Ollie, or Richard, or for that matter, ask Alberto - he is next...
American Voter

"Liar!"

Tell me, do you feel this way about the war in Iraq, the warrantless wiretaps, Abu Ghraib, the torturing of human beings, or the outing of Valeri Plame? No? I did not think so. Hypocrite!

It must be a really difficult cross for you to bear. Of course, i mean this "I know everything," persona must be a real bitch. Except, i am sure, when you get together with all of your rich "Christian" friends, and sit around the fireplace to kick around a few "libs." During these times, it must be a real joy. You must be a very happy person. Not!

God bless you. Ya think?

Her [Hillary's] idea of leadership is more like Tony Soprano.....

Fact!!

Just ask Vince Foster.

Spitzer appears with Hillary in order to put a sheen of respectability on the Hsu deal until we find out that Hsu gave over 60 grand to Spitzers gubenatorial campaign. Hillary is a rather artless liar,at the end of the day.
If you need to give to charity, give it to me as I require charity for a decent average  life. can send you my bank details.
Hillary Hsu = dirty money = Bill
