From NBC's Mark Murray
A new ONE campaign poll of likely GOP Iowa caucus-goers, conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates (D) and McLaughlin & Associates (R), has Romney leading at 35%, Giuliani at 12%, and Fred Thompson and Mike Huckabee tied at 11%.

Quick takes here: Romney has a comfortable lead, and Huckabee has a nice little bounce coming after his second-place finish in the Ames straw poll.

I have this funny feeling Mitt Romney is going to be the nominee. He looks good on camera and considering all the problems the GOP has had to contend with lately, he might be their choice.

There appears to be too much baggage with Giuliani and McCain. Thompson may be too little, too late.

I never thought Romney had a realistic shot at this thing but now I wonder. He's not my choice but I think he's looking better and better to the republicans.

The Republicans will like him. He's not too crazy about Democrats. He didn't much like us when he was here, which wasn't too often.
My mother the Republican says Romney should be called Slick Mitch because he is every bit as slippery as Bill Clinton.

But then, consider your options.  There is McCain who is (sadly) too committed to his Iraq war stance to really make a good choice right now.  His time was 2000, and it's unfortunate he didn't get the nomination then.  Then you have Rudy who is a Republican in the loosest sense of the word, at least from what I can tell.  Now there is Fred who, as Pat said, may be too little too late.  The other candidates are not serious threats, as far as I can tell...although you never know what can happen between now and then.

Romney looks good and he speaks well.  He's already got one up on George (maybe two depending on your preferences) and we elected George twice.
Romney just comes off viscerally as a phony, and that will catch up to him before he gets anywhere near the Presidency.
There's only one problem. Romney is a Mormon.  And that can't be ignored.  It's a cult and they call all non-mormon's "gentiles", I lived there long enough to know - this would not be a good president.  They see it as key to taking over the world I am sure.  THIS WOULD NOT BE GOOD FOR ANY ONE BUT THE MORMONS.
Mike Huckabee can be the toughest opponents for the Democrats, should the Repubs. nominate him.  He seems genuine, amicable, has executive experience as a former governor...and hails from the South.
Yea, like a flakey MORMON is gonna be our president. Don't think so.
Mrs Clinton gonna win in a landslide.
First of all the mormon religon is not a cult. It is a Christian religon! It believes in GOD, & Jesus, And just like any other religons it has its quirks.

I don't know about Romney being president,  I don't know much about him. But anything is better then HIllary in office.
@ Mr. Burger:

This is the same type of thing that was said about JFK when he was elected into office. "OH NO!! He'll take over the world for the pope!!" Same thing. Any religin can be called a cult, especially christianity so be careful where you place the label.

And Members of the LDS church (or, Mormons) don't call people of other faiths "gentiles". Next time you think about slinging mud ask a member of the church what they really believe.

Ignorant fool.
Jim Burger,
Get you facts straight...Mormons are not a cult and they don't call nonmembers of their church "gentiles".  People said the same things about Kennedy when he ran for the presidency "He's catholic, so we can't vote for him" and what happened then?  The same thing will happen in '08.  Americans will do as they have always done; they will pick the person they feel is best suited for the job. In this case (from recent polls) Mitt Romney will probably win. And that won't be a bad thing.  Put his faith aside, and Romney is clearly the best candidate. Now add back in his faith and he looks even more appealing to the public. Oh, by the way, wasn't this country founded on religious freedom?  That goes for the leader of our nation too. If we don't descriminate against someone because of their race, color, religion, or sex when it comes to employment, shouldn't those sames standards apply here?
JeanneGA,
Unfortunately, that's the only thing the Republican party has going for them.  There's no way Americans will vote for another Clinton.  Maybe the Dems can come up with a real threat by 2012? Good luck!
@ F:

Mr. Romney has what most "christians" profess to have but refuse to show: Actual faith. Whatever the faith is in, he's determined to live according to it. That doesn't sound like a "Flakey" person to me.

If you're so concerned about what faith a person lives according to, how come nobody has said anything about Barak Obama? He's Muslim. Aren't they the enemy?

(That was sarcasm, by the way)
I worked on the Salt Lake City Olympics and have met Mitt. I always found him to be an honorable and personable man with sound ethics and a keen intellect. This is one democrat that will vote for him if he wins the nomination.
One other thing, I am not a Mormon but I have lived with them for quite some time. For the most part, they are exceptionally good people that deserve respect for the courage of their convictions. Shame on you bigots out there for condemning him for his faith. You make me sick,
Look at the fantastic job a staunch protestant has done.  A Mormon couldn't do much worse.

Romney's biggest hurdle is his past liberal political positions on social issues (i.e. gay rights, abortion, etc.)  He's been dubbed the "flip-flop" candidate.  But Hilary (the most likely Dem nominee) has the same problem.

A Romney-Clinton race would be the most interesting of the potential match-ups, especially because they both have enormous war chests, so we would get to see a lot from them (mostly to see how they spend their money - not what they have to say.)
What about Ron Paul?
JeanneGA, you are SO right. Go, Hill!
Jim Burger, the Jews in the Bible called non-Jews gentiles or didn't you go to Sunday school? Catholics believe Protestants either heretics or as Pope Wehrmacht the First recently said we are members of cults. Mormons are Christians also, they just go down a different path. As for taking over the world, have you listened to any of those mega church Evangical TV yahoos lately with their apololyptic be bop? Personally I think Texas should go back to being their own country as I have found most of them nut cases and as presidents, they sunk us into two quagmire wars. If Texas was its own country we could send all the illegal Mexicans there since it was theirs to begin with.
If the Repubs are smart, they will nominate Mike Huckabee.  He's the only one who is the genuine thing and the only with a legit shot to beat the Dems.
Funny how the main stream media refuses to endorse Dr Ron Paul. The congressman from Texas who has been winning straw polls by a landslide.
What happens when he can not be ignored any longer. Will the media have to become honest value producers?
Why carry your personal prejudice against a religion into this?? Our country was founded on principles of religious diversity. So he is a Christian. And he actually tries to live the tenants of his faith. What's wrong with that? An anti-Romney stance based on his religion says a lot more about you than him.
Look at his record. I lived in MA while he was Governor. He did a great job in a highly Democratic state. I also lived in UT during the Olympics. He converted a complete disaster into a moderate success. And complete disaster is exactly how I'd describe things right about now...
Romney is a lier and a cheat, not uncommon for Mormons since I live in their state.

This wold be the biggest mistake ever for the USA.

Just look at his track record. He will do or say anything to ge elected.

The many faces of Mitt Romney
I'm astounded.
I don't know how else to say it.
I just continue to be amazed at the number of Republicans who are so easily conned, duped and hoodwinked by Willard Mitt Romney.
I'm not sure there are any facts I could offer that would dissuade his minions from supporting their messiah. It's an emotional thing. They have found their political savior, and nothing he has ever said or done previously or in the future is likely to convince them they saddled the wrong pony.
Here's the latest bulletin that will fall on deaf ears: The born-again pro-lifer, who swears he had a Damascus Road experience on the issue of abortion, currently owns stock in two companies involved in embryonic stem cell research.
(Column continues below)

It was just two years ago that Romney explained his sudden and late transformation on the issue of life: "In considering the issue of embryo cloning and embryo farming, I saw where the harsh logic of abortion can lead to the view of innocent new life as nothing more than research material or commodity."
In other words, Romney claims to have awakened to the harsh realities of abortion by studying the issue of embryonic stem cell research.
First, from a logical standpoint, this makes no sense. If you can't see why stabbing an unborn baby in the head with a pair of scissors is an overtly evil act, I don't think any amount of study of embryonic stem cell research will awaken your sense of moral outrage. But that's what Romney would like us to believe. After all, he's got to explain why he discovered so late in his public life that people have an inherent right to life.
But now we're supposed to believe that this gazillionaire, worth about $250 million, didn't even bother to examine his own financial portfolio to see how he was actively supporting the killing of unborn babies with his own investments.
Or, are we supposed to believe this was just an oversight? If so – if this guy is so cavalier about his own investments – how are we supposed to trust him with the federal budget?
This list of flip-flops by Mitt Romney is legendary – enough to get him a regular role in Doonesbury. But let's review a few of the classics:
• Immigration: As late as last year, the candidate who now ridicules amnesty proposals said: "I don't believe in rounding up 11 million people and forcing them at gunpoint from our country. With these 11 million people, let's have them registered, know who they are. Those who've been arrested or convicted of crimes shouldn't be here; those that are here paying taxes and not taking government benefits should begin a process toward application for citizenship, as they would from their home country.'' Wasn't that pretty much the Bush party line?
• Gun control: He supported bans on so-called "assault weapons." He supported the Brady bill. He spurned the National Rifle Association. As late as 2002, he was still defending Massachusetts' confiscatory gun laws. But, last year, he joined the NRA and claimed to favor easing licensing requirements.
• Minimum wage: In 1994, he opposed an increase, but offered as a compromise tying a hike to the rate of inflation. By 2002, he supported an increase. In 2006, he vetoed an increase. Like some other notable politicians of the recent past, he was against it before he was for it, before he was against it.
• Same-sex marriage: In 1994, he opposed the federal marriage amendment and promised to help establish "full equality for America's gays and lesbians." In 2002, he provided legal recognition to same-sex couples in Massachusetts, even though he was not required to do so under a state Supreme Judicial Court ruling, as he has suggested. Yet, now, in 2007, he miraculously supports the federal marriage amendment.
• Homosexuals in the military: In 1994, he supported "don't ask, don't tell," saying it was a step toward "gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nation's military." Today he claims he doesn't want to change the policy to permit homosexuals from serving openly in the military.
• Tax cutting: In 1994, he opposed a cut in the capital gains tax. In 2002, he refused to sign a "no new taxes" pledge. In 2007, he claims to support a cut in capital gains taxes. He has taken the "no new taxes" pledge. And he says he supports making President Bush's tax cuts permanent.
I could go on. This list is virtually never-ending with this charlatan. But it won't matter to the Romney faithful, who now accuse me of religious bigotry for pointing out the obvious flaws in this man's worldview, his character and his political record. They say I am only doing this because I hate Mormons.
Why carry your prejudice against a religion into this?? Isn’t this a country founded on a principle of religious freedom? So he’s a Mormon that actually lives the Christian faith. We could do much worse.

Look at his record. I lived in MA while he was Governor. He did a great job in a highly Democratic state. I also lived in UT during the Olympics. He converted a complete disaster into a moderate success. And complete disaster is exactly how I'd describe things right about now...
I could not under any circumstance vote for romney---besides being a flip-flopper on every issue I could not stomach what he said about his five sons doing their share for this country by getting him elected president. What is our military that is being murdered and maimed on foreign shores? So much collatarol damage.I invite any one of them to tradde places with my grandson who is is on his way to Iraq.Cowardly just like their father and the rest of the neocons---except for Mccain
which one of the republicans will support the troops and end the war?
After all the others have said what they want there remains one real conservative. That person is Dr. Ron Paul. I will work for his nomination and his election.

Romney the Robot and Huckabee the Human looks like the Republican Dream Team to me. I don't know if Hillary and Whoever could beat that.
HILLARY has always been truthful. Trustworthy, loyal, friendly, Kind, cheerfull, thrifty, and Brave.
She is a LADY IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD,'LADY'
Hillary is:"Trust worthy,Loyal. Kind . friendly, cheerfull, thrifty,Brave, and reverent.
She is a LADY.

Wow it’s really sad to see how many religious bigots there really still are out there.  Sadly I can only surmise that you've been poisoned by your ministers or the negative rumors about Mormons in history.  Please don't believe all the B.S. you hear about Mormons.  1. Mormons believe in family and Jesus Christ more then anything else. 2. We don't refer to non Mormons as gentiles. (However there are jerks everywhere so I'm sorry if someone did say this sorry) 3. Mit Romney is not fake; If putting family first and actually genuinely caring about people is fake then color him guilty. --- The bottom line is this --- Put away your prejudices and try and open your eyes to the world around you.  Why not Mit?  He believes in family, God, and America.

Please Please Please nominate Romney......any Dem running will clean up on him.....just a fact : there are approximately 26% of the U.S. population which are Roman Catholics (approximately 76 MILLION members)- and approximately 13 MILLION members of the Church of Later-Day Saints. To compare JFK's numbers vs. Romney's is like comparing apples and oranges......as our current ruling cabal has seen fit, the numbers of Catholics in our country are growing exponentially........not a bad thing, just a fact...
I am not going to comment on the validity of the Mormon churches take on Christianity. However, the mere fact that Mitt Romney is a Mormon is going to be a factor, and much more so as other Midwest evangelicals, coastal catholics, and individuals generally unfamiliar with the Mormon tenets of faith begin to really consider him as a viable candidate. It is dangerous to make the comparison between Romney and JFK because even though there were questions of his connection to the catholic church he was able to make the affirmative statement that his faith would not have an affect on his politics. The problem is that Mitt Romney cannot make that statement, 1. because he has already made statements to the contrary and 2. any statement of that type would certainly be received a disingenuous to "faithful" voters. His latest proposition that voters want a man of faith rather than a man of a particular faith is a politically savy strategy. However, evangelicals wary of the faith will invariably remain the same, unmoved, while the unknowledgable will begin to ask probing questions because of his open profession of faith. Undoubtably, some of the more (and pardon the characterization) quirky, controversial, and unknown aspects of the faith such as - temple sealing, special undergarments, and the churche's dubious, racist, and relatively recent dealing with people of color will have to be explained. Some might claim that catholics and their belief in papal infalibility, or muslims and their belief in a very "carnally" rewarding afterlife are equally as quirky or controversial. However, these faiths enjoy the benefit of being passively validated, if not accepted by the mere passage of time. For this reason, if Mitt Romney continues to emphasize his faith, he will have to answer question about that faith, how much of it he believes, and to explain those beliefs. It is an untenable situation for any politician to endure, but such is the life. In short his profession of faith in this instance may well prove, in part, his undoing.
However, I believe that Romney's cache will also ebb in part as he is forced to explain both his present position and voting record on key conservative issues such as gay marriage, universal healthcare, and womens reproductive health rights. He will either be reviled for remaining consistent or be repudiated for being inconsistent. Either way his past political positions will be the other part that damns his chances within the party.
I believe that Romney is devout and for that reason he is appealing to people of faith, however, as a politician he leaves much more to be desired. He is well qauffed, wholesome, afforable, and rather well spoken, but, these things make you a great citizen, not a world leader. People may want a man of faith, but they also want the well rounded politician.
Oh please, leave the mormonism out of it. Mormons are good people by and large. Their beliefs are weird to many, but they're good people. How is Mormon belief any less rational than any other religion? And the main point: Don't vote based on religion, vote on character. I'd have no problem voting for Mormon Mitt or Muslim Obama any day, jsut as long as i liked their stances on issues that mattered to me.
Voters are too wise to elect a Senator.  The Senate is nothing but a debating society. Senators have NO experience in management, making executive decisions or keeping a budget.  Romeny and Guilliani are the ONLY people running who have any real experience running a large government and both did wonderful jobs in tough positions. Romney's religion only matters to bigots but his education (Harvard Law and Harvard MBA) matters to almost everyone.
I would like to see Mitt Romney, he seems to be the most professional, family oriented candidate out there. Everyone who critizes him for his religion, in a society where religion has been forgotten, a society damnned for destruction. He might be our only hope at redemption. I like him because he believes in something, has a purpose and respect for something and still belives in family, something alot of americans have forgotten.
Who cares if he is a Mormon.  He knows how to manage money.  He has been 10,000x more responsible with public money and budgeting than our current president.  Religion, abortion, gay rights...blah, blah, blah bigot talk.  Young people, like me, are going with our wallets to the polls.  If Mitt is not the nominee?  I'm going with Hillary.  It will be nice to have Bubba back in office, not right wing agendized zealots who talk small government and deliver the opposite.
When the big money stops backing Hillary, we'll know if Romney has a real shot.
Sorry, folks, my computer has been off line.
Hey, I know, let's be bigots and bash on candidates religion!  Oh yeah, and Hillary can't win because she's a woman, and genetically they just can't compete in a man's world.  Oh yeah, and black people also aren't genetically able to process information at a rate fast enough for civic leadership...and people from the South just aren't smart enough...and don't forget the elderly, we don't want them in office...or Italian-Americans, because they probably have Mafia connections...
Oh yeah, anyone want to talk about any real issues in here?
You say that American's "won't vote for another Clinton"... I would disagree. It's been 8 years since a Clinton held office... That's 8 years of people reaching the legal voting age who weren't of age during the Clinton presidency. Clinton will win. We can't afford to have another bible-toting conservative in office. I think America is realizing that. Romney is too conservative to stand a chance.

As a side note... wouldn't it be nice to have a president without a wattle? All of the old men republican candidates have wattles.

I'm in ur electionz, casting my v0tez!!1! r0fl
Huckabee got his bounce from appearing on the Colbert Report
Sorry, all you morg apoligists, but the Mormon Church is a cult by almost all definitions. Mitt is a liar, just as is your "profit" (misspelling on purpose) is. Watch Hinkley's lies on "60 Minutes" on what you cult believes. Mitt's nomination will be the worst thing that can happen to your cult becasue it will shine the light on the corporation masking itself as a church. Visit exmormon.org for the truth.
This guy is a crook. AND a Morman. Please people wake up. Their is no bigotry here..These people actually believe that they are better than the next person. It is a joke. Listen..their is only one way to fly an airplane and land it. And the Mormans are not on it! You..because of your so-called religion will not help the American people. They (MORMANS) only help themselves. I live in AZ. And this place is loaded with these freaks. They come knocking on my door, are you kidding me! I'll tell them about the truth, not a bunch of crap taught to you me the immorals. People do not let religion mix with politics. It does not work. And this is not a revelation. It is the TRUTH!
Ok what can I write? Is this article being edited by a morman? Please speak the truth. And it is not with the Morman religion. Down with Romney (weirdo) and all mormans. This is not about faith, its about cults and we can not have him elected. Why? Because this would be the first President with more than one wife and more than 6 children. Now that is funny!
I hope Clinton gets elected just to make the rich and the powerful ticked off. (Republicans) Listen nothing can be worse this this idiot Bush has done.
Mitt Romney would be a great President his values are the same as most Americans. America does not practice hard core religion anymore, now its more concerned about values. Mitt Romney has and will show that his values and his leadrship is very fitting to be the next president.

Some would say Mitt Romney is a phony, but look a Rudi Gulini hes more of a phony.  He is not a hard lined Repulbican in fact he could be Republican or Demorcat.  He would not listen to the American people but would be more intrested in Big Business.

Mitt Romeny is the man to face head on the issues tha t face this land and to beat the inexperienced, wishey washey, back biteing, tax raising, war hateing, terroist loving democrats who are on the verge of a civil war with is own people.
Momonism is a cult and if you would do some research the truth will knnock you off your chair-very scarey and goofy beliefs. So, all you protectors of Mitt. Go read and weep.
good grief folks, jim berger is correct. It certainly is a cult.
N Peterson (SLUT), you are the ignorant fool. How is Momonism NOT a cult?
