From NBC's Mark Murray
A new ONE campaign poll of likely GOP Iowa caucus-goers, conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates (D) and McLaughlin & Associates (R), has Romney leading at 35%, Giuliani at 12%, and Fred Thompson and Mike Huckabee tied at 11%.

Quick takes here: Romney has a comfortable lead, and Huckabee has a nice little bounce coming after his second-place finish in the Ames straw poll.

Forget Romney! The only ticket for the GOP is Gulliany-Thompson or Gulliany-Rice.  Gulliany will take a lot of DEMS away from Hilary and Thompson will get all the REPS. The combination with Rice in the ticket will pull the Soccer moms and some of the black vote.  Any other combination and this country will be doomed with Hilary. If she is elected I'm going to have to cross the Mexican border ilegally and hope I'll get the same benefits and rights ilegal aliens have in US.
Another Ron Paul fanatic.  Why?
If republicans nominate romney and support him, then they truly are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites!  Romney is a flip-flopper bigger than Kerry ever was. Bigger that Hillary too.  So, by the Republican's own stand on this issue, therefore, Romney is not qualified to be president.  Also, his staunch anti-gay policy is sickening.  He'll enshrine bigotry and hatred into the constitution. That alone makes him totally unfit to run this country.  And who cares if he's good looking.  That's not a qualification.  And when we start electing people who, like Romney, will govern according to their religious faith, then we turn into a theocracy like Iran. Do we want to be like Iran?  If so, vote for Romney.
Also, I like Huckabee but his name alone makes me laugh.  Huckabee sounds better like "delicious Huckabee jams and jellies" rather than "President Huckabee leader of the free world."
Dave Az: If Texas was its own country we could send all the illegal Mexicans there since it was theirs to begin with.

Ehh, Dave, Az (Arizona) was once part of Mexico too.  Until 1848 I believe.  1853 for the land south of the Gila River.
It's alarming to me that people even bring up religions affiliation as a reason to vote/not vote for a presidential candidate.  The presidency is a government position, and, by law, potential candidates cannot be discriminated against based on factors such as race, gender, religion, etc.  No one brings up the personal beliefs of any of the other candidates- Romney's should not come up either.  If he is the best person for the job, then vote for him, whether you have the same religious beliefs or not!  I am LDS, but do not plan on voting for him myself, because I think other candidates are better for the job.
Jim Burger, John Doe, et al;I notice a common theme among people who dislike this guy solely for his Mormonism. It usually goes something like this:

"I've lived in Utah long enough to know that Mormons are ____" and then fill in the blank with the appropriate disparaging blanket statement followed with more solid reasoning: "So, a Mormon president will ruin the country because Mormons suck".

This leads me to 2 conclusions: First, you are comfortable in a vernacular of naked bigotry, and Second, either you are signing in under multiple names and saying the same thing worded slightly differently, or you and a group of maybe a dozen or so friends are using this formula to create the impression for the rest of us that millions of people out there have been exiled from Utah for being "Gentiles" Which, I might add, I have never heard any Mormon ever call a person who is not a member of their church. Are you part of an online ministry or something?

Just relax, Romney won't win, and even if he did, America wouldn't be a Mormon tent revival for 4 years. How many people are planning on switching churches if Romney is elected? Let's see a show of hands...Give the Mormon stuff a rest already.
I would LOVE someone to do some research on how many of those sweet, wholesome mormon boys join the military and choose to serve our country.  It seems to me, that they have bigger, better plans for THEIR children and they leave defending the country to the "other" people.
DO NOT BE FOOLED!!!
Mormons believe they are the "chosen" people and they only tolerate other people/religions when it suits them.  As soon as their children reach a certain age, they are barely allowed to associate w/non mormons.  This is a very scary "religion" and they conveniently have "visions" when their weird beliefs become too public or scrutinized - basically when it becomes obvious that they are going to have too much public pressure or have trouble recruiting new members.
There are at least 2 mentions in this thread of Sen Obama's muslim beliefs.  Interesting, as he has identified himself (and attends) a christian church.  Are you really THAT AFRAID of a black man?  Please!  And all the discussion of the "cultic" mormons.  Doesnt anyone recognize that our sons and daughters are dying every day in a useless war?  Will you not wake up until they build another wall with THOUSANDS of names that shouldnt be there?
There is one reason to choose a president now - we need leadership.  We need someone who speaks from his (or her) heart and not the wallet of their supporters.  With this in mind, who is out there?  That needs to be the subject here, not whether or not your potential choice for president is either genetically weaker due to an overabundance of x chromosomes, has had too many marriages including to a cousin, thinks peep-stones for viewing golden tablets are a good way of getting important information or has had ancestors in africa more recently than all the rest of us.

I guess I am not surprised by all the anti-mormon crap on the comments. I have seen it before and it is usually from some unknowledgeable person or ex-mormon who couldn't live the beliefs and then strives to prove the contrary so they can validate themselves.

As for the point about not serving in the military, personally I served 6 years in the Airforce Reserves. I also served 2 years on a mission in France for my Church. I knew a ton of other members in the military and most of my friends in the military were very accepting of my beliefs. My dad was 20 years in the Active Airforce and my Grandfather was 20 years and recieved the Silver Star for serving during the invasion of Italy in WWII.

Romney would make a good President and I am throwing my support and money behind him.
I really hope Mitt Romney gets the nomination. A lightweight, flip-flopper like that guy would be easy pickens for people Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden. Republicans don't have great choices for 2008, and thanks to the utter failure and incompetence of George Bush and the GOP as a whole, a Democtrat is basically a show in for 2008.
having a mormon would be like having the Taliban in power! They are a secret society of laws and practices! their dead leader was a pedophile who married a 14 year old and stole a wife from another member
Looking at all these bigoted remarks about mormons really shows the colors of the GOP.  You ignorant fools, Romney is the best shot you have.  He at least has a track record of success, and despite the flip flops, is really a social moderate which is in line with most independants.   Instead, ya'll will nominate a hopeless neocon like Fred Thompson in the image of GWB, an image 72% of americans are SICK OF.
Mike Huckabee will get my vote. He's the only Republican who seems genuine. God save us from electing another Clinton to the presidency. Years was enough.
Blair Hess,
#1 Remove “Under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance?    From our Currency?
#2 Remove the Ten Commandments from our federal buildings?
#3 Redefine the definition of marriage?
#4 Support Partial Birth Abortion?
#5 Parent's cannot "correct" a child for fear of reprisal?

Not only do all Americans NOT agree on these issues as you believe, but several of them are straw men set up specifically to scare people into voting Republican.
"Mitt Romney would be a great President his values are the same as most Americans."
No, his values are the same as ALL Americans, as the Mitster has been a liberal, a centrist, and a conservative, and all in the last 5 years.
His positions have,"evolved", to the point where he no longer accepts evolution. lol
How many here have actually READ, "The Book of
Morman, with the exception of, "Moab", and other LDS members posting here?

Van
Hello!  Serving a misson for your church is not near the same thing as serving in the military.  The whole purpose for every young mormon man to serve a misson is SOLELY FOR RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS.  Did you know they can get to a higher level in heaven if they recruit/brain wash more members?  Are you serious? I can't believe people actually believe that crap! And I am knowledgeable on this "religion" and am not an ex-member.  Please, like I'd want to wait around to get called to some man's planet to be one of his many, many wife's! Does that really make sense to anyone or sound believable?  I guess when you have a group of people that can't think for themselves or question their leader's, they believe it.
Bozeman, MT - does it get real lonely up in the high country?  Would you like some company?

Anyone that can believe the lies that is mormonism is unqualified to be prez. All it takes is a 5th grade education (and an unbrainwashed mind) to see it for what it is - the biggest con job by a unscruplous pedophile con man.
Lisa: The local PBS affiliate in Salt Lake City is now showing ''Saints At War''.This is a multi-series compendium of Mormons who have fought in all of Americas wars since WWI. Over 100 thousand Mormons fought in WWII,with Bill Wahlen,a corpsman, awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. More recently,it was a Mormon who helped flush Saddam Hussein from his hiding place in Iraq. Liberals often quote Brent Scowcroft, who served in the GHW Bush administration as a ''one of their own'' critics who has fiercely laid into President Bush for his Iraq War mishandling. Scowcroft,is a Mormon.
"It's a conservative idea," says Romney, "insisting that individuals have responsibility for their own health care. I think it appeals to people on both sides of the aisle: insurance for everyone without a tax increase."
- Governor Romney, USA Today, July 5, 2005

Whaaaat??

"We need to make America more attractive for legal immigrants -- for citizens -- and less attractive for illegal immigrants. I want to see more immigration in our country, but more legal immigration and less illegal immigration."
- Governor Romney, AP, June 23, 2006

Huh?

Who cares what his religions is? It shouldn't matter. But the phoney slickness of his persona and positions, that should matter.
Sorry Mr. Burger,
those romney backers cannot get past their hurt feelings to see the facts you present before them. It is not bigotry to say that there have been thousands of ministers for at least the last forty years preaching mormonism is a cult that distorts the evangelical message of only one way to heaven and  the bible is the inerrant word of god. no where in scripture is the book of mormon foretold. If this hurts your feelings so much that you must belittle yourself into personal attacks with name calling so be it. In the last page of Revelation the apostle john writes let nothing be added or taken away. The south believes this and it aint gonna change. by the way, what does the book of mormon say about lying? mr. obama is not a muslim he is a church of christ christian. this has been disproven many times in many blogs but romney supporters and others continue to spin the lie. and until texas becomes a its own country again romney will not win its 50+ electoral votes and i think that goes for several other southern states. and i do not know about your world but i have seen and continue to see religious discrimination in the workplace daily. there is no constitutional protection in which you can keep a job if your nongovernmental employer doesn't care for your religion. they may not tell you that's the reason but you are still gone. i am not particularly religious anymore due to this king of thieves administration but  i have been discriminated against by religious persons for not believing their way. by the way, the jfk analogy is flawed because he barely scraped together the win and many believe it was due to corruption.
It doesn't matter who the republicans nominate. They are just going to lose to Hillary on GE.
bb posts: "N Peterson (SLUT),"

Looks like someone has Tourette's.
I'm shocked at the ignorance. Knocking Mitt for Mormonism cause its a "cult" based on its weird beliefs... Stand back and take a look at any religion and its goofy. To all you hardcore Christians who think Mormonism is weird, don't forget that you believe that a fish swallowed a man for three days before spitting him back out onto land. You also believe God made it rain so much the entire world was flooded and that a snake convinced a woman to eat a fruit which lead to you being born in sin. My favorite is that if you cut down a tree, make wood into paper and print words on it with a cover that says "Bible" it all of a sudden takes on a special power. Those certainly fall into the "weird" category. As for the even more rediculous argument that its a cult because it has no root, well you'd be best off not talking for fear of making a fool of yourself (or being swallowed by a large fish). For the love of everything holy people, vote for a man based on his politics, not his religion.
How is mormonism a cult? Are you from another planet? It is a church dang it!!! Go read if you learned how to. And also... we have congressmen that are Jewish. Do we ask them on debates to tell that they think Jesus is a fake? Mormons believe Jesus is the son of God and unlike the biased liars that write Newsweek they do use the terminology "personal savior." So Mitt Romney does not want to talk much about his religion... it is because he is running for PRESIDENT not for POPE or PROPHET!!! All those fake Christians showing anger against mormons prove that they are what they are: fake. It does not matter what Mitt says about his faith. Hypocrites will continue saying America will be better with a cross dresser as a president, or with a power monger woman there. Come on America!!! I remember Christ on the stand and people choosing a Barrabas. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints went from nothing in 1830 to be now the fourth religion in the United States alone!!! Do you think this is given to the false understanding that they are polygamous? Do you think it is because they have horns (yes, some people still believe they have horns... they are cultists that go and sing evangelical hymns and call themselves mainstream religions). Well they are not and they are soooooo good that you put all the Presbytarians and the Methodists together today and they don´t add up to the number os Mormons.

You can call it a polygamist cult as much as you want.  The muslims are polybamists, the Mormons are not. The Jews were polygamists until the year 1,000 B.C. They only stopped because of persecution. Jesus comes from a polygamist family himself (trace his ancestry and you will find Abraham (a polygamist) and Israel (Jacob) another one and Solomon (a big time polybamist with 700 wives and 300 concubines and the Bible says his sin was to worship the strange gods of some of those wives.). So, although the Mormons don´t practice a Bible practice they would not be so wrong if they did. The only reason they don´t is because Americans would kill them if they continued, not because Americans did not have many "wives" but because they were very ignorant and jealous of the Mormon explosion of converts with cities like Nauvoo with 20,000 people or so. So in Utah, the practice stopped because one of the creeds of the religion is to abide with the laws of the land. Some people in Washington D.C. made then a law against polygamy that did not exist until then and the practice stopped. That law affected all Muslims too. Condemn polygamy all you want. Romney is an exception of a man who stuck with one wife for a long time.

How can so many people be so blind? Don´t go ask Baptists what the Catholic Church teaches. Ask a Catholic Priest!!!! Go visit the official site of the LDS Church and read what they believe and you will see that they are C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N-S !!!!!!!!!!!

This is extremely disheartening.

The people here are most likely the voting public, and all I see are angry messages of hatred and distrust.

One sentence you preach compassion and in the next you call them freaks.  I won't defend or attack any religion.  I did my share of soul searching during college and I read through their bible and spoke to their representatives.  It was not for me.

They required a lot of faith.  Their bible was written by a man and as you all have vindicated in this very thread, my lack of faith in mankind was not ill-placed.

If you cannot follow the lessons your own faith strictly (by not judging unlest ye be judged) then who is to say Romney does?  I laugh whenever the outspoken political debaters toss up minute details about a persons traditions in order to convince us that they of course, must be the most devout followers of aforementioned religion.

As far as I'm concerned every President we've ever had has left a blazing trail of Godless acts of deceit, corruption and tradgedy.

Pick your favorite liar this election ladies and gentlemen, thats the only option we have.
In the dictionary:"In religion and sociology, a cult is a term designating a cohesive group of people (generally, but not exclusively a relatively small and recently founded religious movement) devoted to beliefs or practices that the surrounding culture or society considers to be outside the mainstream."
so, ALL religions are cults? Outside the mainstream...lets see...the world is going to hell in a handbasket and someone with family and moral values for once wants to try to change things! Hmmm, sounds good to me!! Get over the Mormon thing! They don't knock other religions. They are good people! We need someone like Mitt to try to pull this world OUT of the handbasket before it's too late...if it's not already.
To: Lisa in Idaho...Brigham Young University has the LARGEST R.O.T.C program outside of the military!! My father, grandfather, brother and now my 19 year old son...we are proud of our country! Voting or not voting because of a religion is what is scary!!
