Snow resigns

From NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell
NBC News has learned that White House Press Secretary Tony Snow will step down Sept. 14 as the president's chief spokesman and the public face of the White House. Dana Perino is expected to replace him.

He is expected to make his announcement during today's on-camera White House briefing at 12:45pm. President Bush is expected to make a statement at the briefing. Snow formally informed the president yesterday.

Snow says his departure is based on family finances. "If I had the dough I'd stay 'til the bitter end,” Snow told NBC News. As an assistant to the President, Snow earns the highest-level salary among White House officials at $168,000 a year.

The 52-year-old Snow says his decision is not related to a recurrence of cancer. In March, the White House announced that Snow's colon cancer has returned. In his first battle, Snow had his colon removed in 2005.  This most recent recurrence showed cancer had spread in the abdomen, the peritoneal cavity. After surgery in March, Snow completed four months of chemotherapy recently and tells NBC News the CAT scans and MRIs "look great." Snow says he will continue with "maintenance chemo" for the approximately five tumors he still has. Snow says his doctors have told him those tumors are "stable" and "fractionally smaller."

He says he has no immediate plans but will seek employment where he can earn more money. Snow says he intends to become visible in cancer activism.

The president named Snow as his third Press Secretary on April 26, 2006, replacing Scott McClellan. Snow conducted his first on-camera briefing on May 8, 2006.

Snow previously worked as host of "The Tony Snow Show" on FOX News Radio, and "Weekend Live with Tony Snow" on the FOX News Channel. He's written nationally syndicated columns for both The Detroit News and USA Today. Snow is married to wife Jill, and they have three children.

yikes ,is right. I can not believe what I read in the blog rooms .Do any of you realize how polarized you all are? "We the people" ,this means AMERICANS .This is a phrase that 1st and foremost should resonate in every one of you.Do the lot of you not realize how the political elite have manipulated you into back biting ,nashing ,and over all hating the other side. Its so bad that you do not even realize, you do not matter! The political elite care about money ,not your sons or daughters in IRAQ. money; not your house morgage ,or insurance rates. Money; not your likes or dislikes. They manipulate situations to create polarization so you will not see real issues . Those said issues are going to cost you in the long run. The elite do not plan for a day or month ,but in decades .You plan for tomorrows blog , or where you will buy the cheapest gas! Get a grip AMERICA "WE the people" united WE stand ,devided we are fleeced.
Amen Chip, exactly the point I was trying to make earlier.
Here is a rant for all. I hear Clinton this ,and Bush that ,and now Fred .Has anyone stopped to think they'er all polititians .I do not presume to base my morals or my personal beliefs on a politician reguardless of thier political reflection. Again a man or woman is seen by thier actions not words .Clinton the 1st overall did well for America as by what was seen by the overall global population has seen , Bush is doing piss poor by global population standards ,but what does it matter when they all change thier political party line like they change thier underwear. They all recieve campaign contributions from the same corrupt corporate entities ;eg. law firms ,real estate, big oil, prescription drug, and lobbyist all. The only difference is Fred does not have to account for his contributions. Know knowing that ;who do you think owns thier loyalty?
You dumb f...'s, just because you make 8 bucks an hour flipping bugers, does not mean others have to live in a ramshackled apartment or in their parents basements just to symphtise with YOU. The man has done what is right for his kids and his family. His going through Cancer, if he wents to make 10 times more then what he is making now, so much the better.
GET A LIFE YOU F-ING TROLLS.
Tony has the best insurance EVER!!!!
$168,000 a year is not enough if you have to look at Helen Thomas every day.  That requires combat pay!!
this is the first time I ever "blogged," and based upon the hatred I've read above, I know why I haven't before this.  I have never seen so much class envy in my life.....it's you libs who have drunk the liberal "Kool-aid" of class envy, character assassination, and race-baiting behavior....you libs like to think of yourselves as tolerant and compassionate....well, you show your true colors with your hateful, hysterical whining over the earnings capacity of a dying man.......but we'll never a peep out of you over the all money Mrs. Clinton makes, will we?......you libs have too much time on your hands.....cheers!!
You are all Americans ,has anyone stopped to think the reason we live in a two party system is because the elite want it that way! Think about it ;in the early years of politics there were as many as 18 parties in one election ballot. Now 2? The reason , the elite know that many parties mean more of the mid and lower class could then put people into the ring . Now if there are candidates that truely represent the peoples interest then thier votes dwindle ,because WE the PEOPLE outnumber them thousands to one. Cut the parties ,creat two elite upper class parties ,and voila. Then add mouthpieces to the mix like :Rush Limburger , Snow , neut gitrich ,only to name a few and you creat descention of the masses.Where are we now? Food for thought.
How is this ''top news'' -- this was reported far and wide TWO WEEKS ago (Aug 17, 2007). Really, MSNBC, give your readers some finer-tuned accuracy.  (please)
Tony Snow had a tough job!  He had to go out there each day and face the press...trying to defend the idiot-in-chief who currently is running this country...into the ground!  Through it all, there were times when even he looked like he did not believe what he was saying to the press.  But he did it with grace...and candor.  Good luck Tony...and God speed!
To all the haters out there, who are happy to kick a guy when he is down and probably fighting for his life ... its not too late to break out of the fog of your pathetic existence. This is a human being who is coming to terms with his own mortality. If you can't see that, then may you be blessed to walk in his shoes.
".....it's you libs who have drunk the liberal "Kool-aid" of class envy, character assassination, and race-baiting behavior....you libs like to think of yourselves as tolerant and compassionate....well, you show your true colors with your hateful, hysterical whining..blahblahblah"....  Thanks for clearing that up, hypocrite...I mean Repugnicant.
"You are all Americans ,has anyone stopped to think the reason we live in a two party system is because the elite want it that way! "  And who are they? The very people sorry nazis like Chong Lee and Vince and all the other brown shirts rush to defend, no matter how treasonous the perp. A life is what I'd like, you F*ING TROLL!
Vince from NJ,

You da man!
It is ABSOLUTELY appalling that there are so many people out there that at are so totally uninformed and so completely inconsiderate.  They don't seem to have a clue as to the crisis we are in regarding Islamic terrorists and illegal immigration.  They are solely interested in getting power in this country at all costs to the good of the population.  How can they be so callous and so ignorant in this day and age?

Good luck in your future, Tony and pay no attention to the disgraceful actions of those not intelligent enough to know the difference between liberalism and conservatism.
I sincerely wish that this wonderful country could be divided giving half to Democrats and half to Republicans and then we could see how each of their policies would result.  I believe the Democratic side would shrivel up and die very quickly, unfortunately.  I was a democrat until I woke up and realized the errors of my ways.  I hated the meanness that went on like what is going on today with Tony Snow and they lying and cheating that went on daily just as it does today.
I WILL NOT waste my time on people who don't have the courage of thier convictions to sign thier names!

You all live in a nation where any one of you can earn 168K if you apply yourself. He earned much more than that before this working on Fox and the radio. He took a pay cut to serve his country and president - how many of you would cut your salary in half (or more) to go serve this country?
I don't know if Tony Snow will be reading these commentaries but I hope he realizes that there are many out there who wish him and his family well.  Fighting cancer is an all consuming, daily struggle that wrecks havoc on your emotions, body and finances.  I don't presume to know what life must be like for him as so many seem to be able to do.  I do know that I admire those who may not like him for political reasons but had the ability to display a beautiful human trait in their compassion for a fellow human being.  When Bill Clinton went through open-heart I prayed for him even though I did not like his political agenda.  Voicing our disagreement with someone is a freedom we still have in this country.  Why do we have to resort to such hatred though?
Tony, God bless you (I can still say that in this country!!!)
Yup, Snow is the honest guy so that he is saying $168,000 is not enough for me. Other people would find other excuses. The fact is that the politics are controlled by a small group of people who makes a big money (and they think they deserve).
But I think Snow is dying. It is sorry for him but this is somthing his rich can't change. That's Life.
My best wishes to Tony and his family.  I can not believe the comments I read on this page concerning Mr. Snow’s finances.  To all these hateful, envious, jealous, pathetic, losers who have absolutely no concept of freedom and wealth.   I say to YOU- GET A LIFE!!  Since obviously Mr. Snow has educated him self better than YOU and has worked harder than YOU he deserves to live a better and higher life style than YOU!   So instead of sitting on YOUR rumps and telling the world how it owes YOU an apology, stop mocking Mr. Snow get off YOUR  A__ and go make something of your pitiful existence!!!!

what a bunch of hypocrites above. If any of us could earn more money than we presently are, wouldn't we?
These responses are pathetic, hateful, and sadly typical of the left wing in this country. Try a little optimism in life. Try truly caring for your fellow man and wishing well for others regardless of party affiliation.
Vince George Bush was the guy who used compassionate.I for one would love to beat the repuckers back in the holes they hide in from going to Iraq,Karl Rove was a hero to me .He showed the democrats we don't need bipartisanship when you win you dictate to me when I when don't start talking about working together just shut your yap and get in the back of the bus .
Some of you right wingers are, collectively, the south end of a north bound donkey. You joyfully practiced hate politics for 6 years attacking a popular president for no reason other than hate, then you vote for a sleaze weasel who got his votes using fear and smear (note I didn't say "elected"- two treasonous Secs. of State - Harris and Brown - "elected" that walking abortion) and now you seem surprised and disgusted that half the country is pissed off and hateful. You fostered it, you supported it and you voted for it! I don't know what's more stunning - your hypocricy or your stupidity, but I don't know if the country can ever recover from what you morons caused. Oh yah - to hell with Tony Snow and all the other traitors in BushCo.
Cheers to all the hate-mongers on this blog, those little pieces of life's excrement who make fun and folly over a cancer patient simply because they hate his political background and therefore hate him. On Mr. Snow's last day of life, whenever that may be, be sure to drink it up. And I'll be drinking to all of you, you pitiful pieces of mankind.
Could it be that a man facing his mortality wants to provide for his family as best he can.. while he can?

For compassionate democrats, The majority of you contributing here are anything but.
Good riddance to Tony Snow. I don't feel the least bit sorry. You are arrogant, you lie, you are condescending, and you aided and abetted the most poisonous and illegitimate administration in this country's history. Thanks for helping to make this a worse place. That will be your legacy.
Good luck on your job search. Hopefully you will find a job where you don't have to slum on only 168k/year.
I find it quite telling which side of the aisle most of the people that can't spell are on.
Come on cry babies. In the private sector he has the ability to earn much more. A dry waller that can make fifty to sixty thousand a year, can only work for forty for so long. In the waning years of your life, providing as much for your family would be a priority. Quit your free health care whining.
Look at the compassion from these nanny state pot-smoking liberals! Did it occur to you idiots that Tony does not want to let his children know that he is dying? That maybe he wants to make some more money during the little time he has left to assure that they can go to college? Stop inhaling the glue and get a job.
Snow knows he doesn't have more than a few years at best and he's likely to be incapacited most of that time. If he remained in his high pressure position he'd deterioate much faster. He's not interested in making money for himself, its for his family when he's gone.

I thought I'd seen all the bile the Democrats could spew but this thread takes the cake.
So he takes what is probably a massive pay cut to go to the White House, does the best he can for as long as he can and realizes that he is going to be in financial trouble befor too long. All I see here is everyone complaining about $168K. Do you think the people that serve you your big mac and fries feel for you when you make 3-5 times thier salary. If they can live off of it why cant you?? Wake up and look at the big picture-> Democrats are using you all like string puppets to get what they want and not what is good for you. If your upset about the money issue, look at what dems are really worth. Is edwards of Hillary poor? She would probably hang herself at the prospect of only getting 168K per year. Wake up people. Stop hating and start working with each other.
why should he not pursue more income if he can?  should his standards be based on middle America?  this is one hell of a commie thread if there ever was one...  someone dying of cancer practically and all this hate... that's why I can stand leftists...so vile, rude and totally unbecoming..
It has been truly educational reading all of the comments. Lets see, if I vote Democrat I can call the President names and accuse the administration of lying while not offering any proof. I can claim that he was appointed President, even though it was reported in the Washington Times newspaper on page 8 that he won Florida buy 587 votes. I can hope for National Health Care because I am not making enough money to pay my own way in life and I want someone else to pay for me going to the doctor. Even if I die before I am approved to see a Doctor. I can badmouth Corporations all the time, even though without them no one would be working. Which by the way would be good for the enviroment because their would not be any emmissions from cars from people going to work. We could all just stay at home and watch TV and get lazy and draw our welfare checks from the government. OOPS sorry, can't do that TV is a corporation, wouldn't be available. If we can still draw our welfare checks and get lazy we can all move to New Orleans and when the next hurricane hits, we can blame it on Bush and wait for the government to come move us out of the way of the hurricane because we are to dependent on them to make our own choice and LEAVE. Need I go on? Now if I vote Republican, I can expect to be called neo cons and various other names. Be accused of being rich and not carrying for the poor. Lets see. John Kerry gave $487 to charity while Bush gave $400,000 and Edwards gave like $1500 while Channey gave over $1,000,000. Amounts may be inaccurate but not much. As a republican I can look forward to being hated by dems and accused of all sorts of things. Most with no evidence mind you. But I don't care. I continue to live the American Dream that so many dems hate. I actually try and work to better myself and my family be it by earning more money or whatever. Yes, if I get rich the better I will like it. I don't plan on sitting in my "Oh woe is me" chair and cry about how I want the government to give me more. Myself I would rather be independent from the government. I would rather have my retirement coming from Mutual Funds and bank accounts I have rather then depend on a small $600 to $1200 monthly Social Security check. But you see, that takes hard work and planning. If I do all of this planning and hard work then I won't have time to worry about what someone else is doing in their life like so many dems do everyday. So I would like to thank all of the dems for posting here and giving me encouragement to continue my goals in life to be filthy rich and non-dependent on government handouts when I retire. If any of you would like to earn more then your making now I can tell you how. Get off your lazy democrat butt and go to work and quit waiting for politicians to give you something. Nothing is FREE. It always comes with a price. Payable either now or later. Stop waiting for the entitlements, which is a big word for take from someone who works for it and give to a lazy person who won't work.
Tony Snow was probably making 2x in the private sector what he makes as Press Secretary.  He accepted a significant salary reduction to enter public service and has reached a point where it is no longer feasible for him and his family.  It is unfair to judge what someone makes against your own earnings, but rather we should examine what a person earns vs. what they could earn.
Gee Tony,

I'm going to take a tremendous leap of faith and assume that your stated reason for your resignation is genuine.  So here it goes:

I'm really sorry about your failing health and personal financial situation.  Are you getting behind on your health care bills?  Some times, it just takes a first-hand experience (such as yours)to begin reconsidering some basic positions such as the notion that that health care reform is wrong.

Do you recall the attempt on Ronald Reagan's life where James Brady also took one for the Gipper?  Well, it was that incident that changed Brady's personal and politcal position on gun-control.

While no one wishes ill-will on one's personal health or financial position, it is perhaps this personal experience that may help you understand the struggles of millions of (non-union) working class Americans.

It is my genuine hope that you move on to achieve public work of significant value that millions of working class Americans can truly remember and appreciate.

You have proven to be a great defender of a massive political machine.  Before you go, become a great defender of the masses - working Amercians striving for health care coverage.

Hey repukers this aint the liberal left you grew up with we adapted, thanks to your star rove,Sorry most of the college boys who skip their service are better spellers and work in the administration JIM WEBB FOR PRESIDENT
Hey morons .... the reason it's about the money is becuase he has METASTATIC colon cancer, a wife, and 3 kids.  Wouldn't you want to make as much $ for your family as possible while you're still alive???  He's going to die within a year.  Think about that before you start in with your hate...
If you want to have more money, go make more money.  Surprise, there are lots of people in this country who don't owe you a friggin thing, and we don't want to pay your way when we're busy working and paying our own way.  Get over it.  Unless you've lived in DC don't criticize anyone for saying that 168K isn't enough.  Maybe Tony Snow wants to assure his children's college and his wife's welfare should he not survive.  Maybe he wants to assure them life without massive medical bills.  All insurance providers aren't the same, some leave you with out of pocket expenses and cancer isn't cheap to treat.  Honestly, can any of you be civilized?
For the critics, 168 thousand a year is chicken feed when you live in the dc area. Tony's problem was getting sick and being in the public eye , which being a conservative draws ire from left no matter what. Of course; he could have spent his career getting rich on shady deals in politics like Harry Reid, John Murtha and the Clintons.
Tony Snow's money issues are his business and not anybody elses's. I am sure he took a major pay cut to serve the country. Quit complaining of what he makes, you are only jealous. He is stating the reason and we should respect him for that. Now get off the computer an d get a job that pays you miserable LIBS more than you make now.  P.S.. you " Libs " should be happy he will be making a lot more money, ......Hence he will be paying more taxes and that is what you people love !
I'll be sorry to see Tony go. He was truly an asset to this administration and a delight to listen to when he talked to the press. I also loved him when he filled in for Rush on the Rush Limbaugh Show and I hope we haven't seen or heard the last of him. His wisdom, wit & honesty were very refreshing and he will be a great addition to wherever he ends up. Good luck Tony!!
Yikes, you dumocraps are a pathetic bunch. Or are you just more upset because good news is coming out of Iraq now and your desperate and as the cliche goes 'What's good for America is bad for democrats'. It's like your in your last hurrah of complaining about President Bush. Get over the 2000 and 2004 elections and get a life for goodness sake.

Can't you see Mr. Snow is doing very poorly? Where is he going to get a job at all, let alone a job that pays more than he is getting now? The stress this kind of a job produces can only hinder any well being he can muster in his state of poor health. He needs to get out of Washington and back home where he and his family can be nurtured and given the emotional and spiritual support they so desperately need at this time. I wish he and his family God's peace that passes all understanding while they keep their hearts and minds on Christ Jesus.

And honestly, all you miserable wretches who wrote the disgusting and cruel things above, I hope God protects you from cancer. I would not want to go through it in your shoes knowing what cruelty I had spat forth about another.

And you democrats who wrote kindness you are not dumb at all and I wish you well.

I have noticed that many of the people that have written hateful comments about Tony Snow are very poor spellers. They are demonstrating multiple facets of their ignorance.
Tony's prognosis can't be too good with 5 tumors. He probably figures that he has a very short time to make money. He has 3 small children, so it makes sense that he would want to sock away a bundle now to finance their college and future comfort. How he spends or saves his money is none of our business. My guess is that he would be saving most of his salary. I wouldn't be surprised if he had high medical bills, even with insurance.
I think that Tony Snow is a very sweet and gentle person, and I wish him happiness and health.
I didn't read anywhere that Mr. Snow was complaining about his salary.  He simply is making a decision based on his family's best interest.

Good grief, you'd think the man had pocketed some coin on the side by renting out the Lincoln bedroom in the White House.  But of course, we're not talking about Bill Clinton's financial "obligations", are we?
For those of you who think he's whining and out of touch to be strained on $168K.

I looked at moving to Washington DC for a job and I was going to have to earn $170,000+ to live at the same lifestyle level that I was living on for $70,000 in Alabama (for a comparable house, with a wife and 4 kid, etc.)

God's blessings, Tony, for you and your family
Bless you Tony -
and thanks ~
You can tell the libs. They all use some form of the word LIE after their favorite family gets away with everything from rape to treason.  (Nuke technology to China for campaign contributions. Someone who couldn't LIE as well would have had their final injection by now.) Snow's a loser like so many of the blue bloods. Libs, crawl back under your rocks.
Perhaps he is thinking about a wife and children that will be left behind, as he may not have many years left to make some income for them to live on after he is gone. Anyone think of that?

Ted
