Previewing tonight's debate

Posted: Wednesday, September 05, 2007 4:24 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
DURHAM, NH -- Greetings from New Hampshire, where it is a crisp 66 degrees and sunny. I am on the ground here in the Granite State hours ahead of tonight's GOP debate. First Read will be liveblogging and keeping tabs on all the swipes, shots and absences (eh hem, Fred Thompson).

But first a few thoughts on what to look for and where the Republican field stands right now. The last Republican debate was a week before the Iowa straw poll, which after our busy August, feels like a really long time ago. At that debate, you'll remember, fireworks came off the bat on the issue of abortion -- notably because of Brownback's attacks on Romney. Well, if you saw today's photo of Brownback's speech here, he won't likely be the center of attention -- not after his disappointing showing in Ames, finishing behind Huckabee, despite the resources he pumped into the straw poll that Giuliani and McCain skipped.

In this debate, the bar is set high for Romney, who leads in the NH polls, owns a home here, and was the governor of neighboring Massachusetts. He has done well for himself so far in these debates, but will he come under attack tonight? Notably absent, of course, will be Fred Thompson, but he will be present on the airwaves (in the form of a new TV ad). Thompson has angered the New Hampshire Republican Party by skipping the debate and will instead appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Behind the scenes, the Romney and Giuliani campaigns have been going after each other hard, particularly on immigration (see "sanctuary city" and "hypocrite"). But will the candidates finally be that sharp face-to-face? So far at these debates, they've acted like best buds. Does that change tonight?

Moreover, this debate and New Hampshire may be most important to McCain, whose epitaph has all but been written by insider politicos. Does he go after front-runners Giuliani and Romney?

Great. I was wondering when the next debate was. Go Ron Paul!
What about the man..... Congressman Ron Paul!!! Will they let the giant killer (haha) speak tonight?  Ron Paul will crush these fools in any debate!!!  They just need to let him speak.
Ready for another episode of, "Quien es Muy Macho?", starring eight old white guys in republican ties?
Will more people be watching senator Brownback and Co. than were watching him in that photo, or will they all have their TiVo's set for Fred on Leno?

Van
You know there's a GOP debate when a bunch of new posters show up touting Ron Paul.  One request guys...when you put these banners up along I-95, use some better materials.  They were blown onto the highway the mornign they were put up.

Thanks First Read for covering this debate.  As one of the few conservative posters here, I'm still trying to figure out which candidate is best.

So far the only Conservative I see is Ron Paul. The Republican party needs a winner that we can all rally behind. The fact is: the GOP used to be for limited government, the new GOP stands behind a man who has way too much executive immunity.

We need to Restore the Republic!
Don't you find it odd that mainstream media always neglects to mention Ron Paul at all?

Educate yourselves! Vote for the only hope this country has.
Yeah I hope they let Ron Paul open his big mouth, so America knows that he loves terrorists and blames us for 9/11.
we will watch videos----these guys are just soooo boooring. What will they say---Lets bomb Iran and surge for about 10 more years.?I love Bush? Will the protesters be there, about 10 miles out of sight?Pasty white old buggars.
Will someone please step-up to the plate and separate themselves from the pack; to include the left side?  I am a conservative but having a difficult time understanding their tactics.  The Dems?  It's like getting the best of the worst.  Fred on Leno?  He just can't stay away from "HollyHood."

Thanks First Read.
Let's give a big hand for FOX Nudes!  All Nude, all the time... Live Nudes every night!

Did a radio show a few years ago where I played a character named "Richard Cranium."  I just watched old tapes of Brit Hume for inspiration, went on the air and asked stupid questions and gave pompous answers. I sneered but you couldn't see me. I do it think the sound of sneer and smirk came through the FM band.

That was before Limbaugh stole my schtick.

Turns out there are "anti-fan" clubs (one is called the Empty Leisure Suit) for Brit all over the English speaking world whose members will be tuned in tonight for a double shot of Brit's act.
Turns out he is a perfect post-post modern totem.  A joke he plays on himself.  Should be fun.  I just wish I would have copyrighted my old material!

Oh... and speaking of Richard Cranium,  Grimey is back. way cool!

Actually, Ron Paul has the best explanation for 9/11 of ALL THE CANDIDATES !! Republican or Democratic

Ron Pail for Secretary of State in the Obama/Edwards administration.
Let's have some bi-partisanship, instead of the past 15 years of political polarization and divisiveness !!

Oh God, not another bull---- throwing political debate by the republican war mongers.
why does fred thompson play mickey mouse games running for president> We are sick OF HIS TIMID WAYS.GET IN WITH BOTH FEET OR GO BACK TO ACTING
AND GROW UP~!
freddy, the headless tomson gunner (LMAO,as if ) is skipping this debate...

Where is jerry? I believe he once voiced approval of Tancredo so this is for him. I was visiting in New England over the holiday weekend and happened to hear a radio interview of Tancredo. I was surprised to find him a very thoughtful and nuanced person who seemed sincere in his beliefs and provided the reasoning behind them. Even though I don't agree with much of his beliefs and will be voting for a Democrat I did find it refreshing to hear something other than inane slogans, divisiveness, misrepresentations and shallow thinking. He seemed honest and forthright even when it might not win votes. I don't hear much about him from the Republicans so I thought I'd give some credit when due.
I am in total agreement with Frank about the Ron Paul supporters.  In a totally blue state, I was surprised to see the banners, but was extremely aggrivated to see them blowing off the underpasses.

But that is neither here nor there.  I am slightly disappointed that Thompson chose to wait til the day AFTER to announce his run.  Can't wait to see what he brings to the table.

Frank ... its good see other conservatives posting here!
I just discovered Ron Paul, and have been comparing and contrasting him to everyone else running for president and I have to say I'm starting to like this guy. He seams to be honest and knows what he's talking about. How come the media never covers him?  He's won a lot of those straw pols and seams to have a ton of volunteers, money, how come the media never mentions him?
Go Ron Paul!

Every time I see these Ron Paul posters I just throw up a little bit in my mouth.

I really just want to get an idea of what each person would DO if elected.  Rudy would likely secure the boarders and keep taxes low, Romney would probably do the same, but add on some health care stuff and likely fix our economy, and McCain would probably keep pretending he's a rogue by supporting hard-left legislation.  Obama would likely sit around and hope things went well - maybe visit some enemies on vacation, and Hillary would do just about anything that sounds good enough to be a "legacy".

It's down to Rudy and Mitt for me folks.

Oh yeah - abortion?  Who cares.  Let's not elect a president thinking that they will make a difference.  Any republican president will appoint the right judges.  That nullifies the social conservative stuff for me.  Rudy can be pro choice if he wants.  Mitt - even better.
ronald reagan with alzheimers would destroy all these guys on their best day.
STOP IGNORING DOCTOR PAUL MAINSTREAM MEDIA!!!
Kick butt tonight Duncan Hunter!!!! Republicans need to go west, and avoid the north east snake oil salesmen. Bring the west and the south together, and watch the north east cry again. :-)
The media doesn't cover Ron Paul because they are afraid of someone exposing them for not telling the truth all these years. Besides, the GOP tells them who the frontrunners are.  Between the two, they've got it all worked out.
Thompson waiting until the day after to announce...I can't get Carly Simon's "You're so vain" out of my head.
I too am confused as to why Ron Paul isn't discussed more often.  He offers a very different viewpoint to many of the other candidates and has a very vocal, supportive base.  He's also raised more money than McCain, if I remember correctly, but he's never mentioned.  I wonder why?
I am so glad to hear about all this support for Ron Paul. I am anxious to hear more from him and I hope he becomes a serious contender.

I think the media ignores Paul because he was once a member of the Libertarian party and they don't think we will actually vote for him . Which to I say, all the more reason to give this man coverage!
A moot debate from the moot repukes.  GOP = M O O T
don dempsey -- "there you go again"
I take back what I said about Tancredo. It was like Jekyl and Hyde the difference between the radio interview I heard and the debate performance.  Maybe it is the debate format that brings out the shallow and worst in candidates.
Ron Paul doesn't get the big time media because he doesn't have the big time corporate sponsership because he actually scares them. And that's a very good thing for us. It's up to WE THE PEOPLE to elect our last American Hero...Dr. Ron Paul.
It is truly disturbing what little media attention Ron Paul receives. When one does a little research on the internet one will quickly see for themselves the massive grass root movement regarding Ron Paul. The GOP, the Dems and especially Wall Street will do whatever thay have to do to prevent him from really being heard. REMBEMBER WHO OWNES THE MEDIA: WALL STREET. GO RON PAUL!!!!!
My vote is on Ron Paul. He is the one the Media has their thumb on to try, without success, to keep him quiet and out of the shouting distance from the people that would listen and realize that he IS who we NEED in the White House. The more I hear from him about each subject , from the abolishment of the IRS and the Federal meddling of Home Land Securities, and dumping the Federal Reserve, A new me has developed from the quiet , go along with the flow me, to the loud shouting of GO RON PAUL!!!  RonPaul2008  Lets do it!!!
