Fred's in

NBC/National Journal campaign reporter Adam Aigner-Treworgy sets the scene for Thompson's first stop today in Iowa… With his first official campaign event scheduled for 3:00 pm ET today, the Fred Thompson camp is working hard to create the right atmosphere to ensure that its candidate enters the race with a splash. On the second floor of the Polk County Convention Complex in downtown Des Moines, in a wide-open room with the capacity for more than three hundred people, the campaign has erected a large stage equipped with three video projectors set in a faux-limestone façade.

The first thing supporters will see is a short video presentation that the advance team has called a biopic on the life of Fred Thompson, followed by a brief introduction by a prominent member of the local media and then a 30- to 45-minute speech that will serve as Thompson's official introduction to both Iowa and the entire country.

In the hallway outside the convention hall, a small group of self-proclaimed "Fred-Heads" gathered on Wednesday night to decorate the bland concrete walls with hand painted signs featuring slogans such as "Run, Fred, Run" and "Got Fred?" The volunteers consisted mostly of local activists with an interest in Thompson. Some had defected from the McCain campaign after the senator’s struggling campaign made drastic changes in his Iowa staff, while others claimed they have been waiting for Thompson to run since the early 1990s. One of the volunteer sign-painters said that Iowans were still struggling to find a candidate to support, and that she suspected the predominant emotion among Thursday's attendees would be curiosity. The only real question remaining is: Who's going to show up?

With no real campaign headquarters in the state, his sole rep here in Iowa has been a young man named Andrew Dorr. Dorr -- who had been rumored to be heading up Rudy Giuliani's Iowa strategy before Thompson officially hired him in late June -- was the political director for Jim Nussle's (R) failed gubernatorial campaign in 2006 and is fairly well respected among Iowa politicos. He will be heading up Thompson's Midwest efforts and the feeling seems to be that any supporters Thompson has in the Midwest thus far are due to Dorr's hard groundwork.

The New York Times’ lead: "After months of false starts, staff shake-ups, and questions about the seriousness of his intention to run for president, Fred D. Thompson rolled out his candidacy last night with a two-pronged entry into the race that sought to take the spotlight from his Republican opponents as they squared off in a debate."  More: "But already, there are questions about the wisdom of Mr. Thompson’s television and Internet tactics, his late entry and the decision not to participate in the debate. On CNN, he was being called a ‘no show,’ and in New Hampshire, there was outright disappointment."

The Washington Post: “Thompson's long-awaited announcement brings a potentially formidable candidate into the Republican race. His Southern roots, conservative message and celebrity appeal from movies and television have already pushed him into second place in most national polls, behind Giuliani. But Thompson's late start leaves him well behind his rivals in organizing his campaign in early-voting states.”

The Boston Globe writes that his "unusual" campaign launch "will either go down in political history as a brilliant strategic stroke or a classic blunder."

Interestingly, as the Boston Globe notes, Thompson's video announcement singled out Clinton, by name, "declaring that Republicans don't want ‘another Clinton victory. Our country needs us to win next year, and I'm ready to lead that effort.’”

New Hampshire GOP chair Fergus Cullen didn't have great things to say about Thompson's decision to skip the debate. "For him to then go on Jay Leno the same night and be trading jokes while other candidates are having a substantive discussion on issues is not going to be missed by New Hampshire voters," Cullen said.

Fred's out in my book. No THINKING person can take this guy seriously. Don't fall for it. THINK for yourself Americans. Don't accept more of the same agenda for 4 more years.
ya go fred ya got my vote, we are talking about fred flinstone aren't we?
Whooppee Fred's in. Who really cares. A second rate actor...been their...done that. Two uneventful terms as Senator. Lobbiest who had no problems making money for planned parenthood but now is pro life; are the christian right that gullible/idiotic? Boring speaker....paint drying is more inspiring. The Republicans are obviously grasping at straws or should I say hitching themselves to his red pickup truck. He is one of us!!!!!!!Yeah right!
Yay, Freddy's in! The surprise factor was about like getting a birthday card from your insurance agent. Surprise, folks! Bush Jr. is coming in to save the day! How about some confetti and party favors? How do you follow something like this? The second coming of Christ, maybe, introduced by Ann Coulter. Karl Rove doing a break dance. Anything less would be anticlimactic. Balloons for all! Lady, please de-snot your kid.
"Are you ready for Freddie?" -- Lil Abner
"Got Fred?"

Don't worry, pennicilian will cure that !!
Drink lots of fluids and stay in bed !!
It is a sad commentary indeed on the current field of Republican candidates when someone like Fred Thompson can ignite true enthusiasm in the GOP for 2008. Thompson will NOT be their saviour!  Now that he is finally done playing possum, he will be exposed to the same intense media scrutiny now suffered by his rivals.  The man spent 8 years in the U.S.Senate with nothing to show for it... He did not sponsor a single piece of significant legislation.  In fact, he was notorious for AVOIDING hard work.  After 8 years of Bush's misleadership of this country, the American people need a president with a passion for solving our many problems and a vision for the future. That is not Fred Thompson!  He is unique...new to the scene...people are curious but, in the end, they will find him lacking in what it takes to be Commander-in-Chief. In a time when Americans desperately want CHANGE, he offers us MORE OF THE SAME!!!
When John Kerry ran for president he joined the race about the same time as Fred Thompson did. For Kerry this was okay, but the media seems to think that Thompson made a terrible mistake. He is in the race now, his date of entry is not important and the journalists who keep recylcing this complaint are unoriginal and lazy.
OBAMA in '08, Pittsburgh PA - I don't know. I'm a Democrat and I like Edwards and I also like Obama, but if Clinton is the nominee I want someone to vote for and Fred Thompson is vastly superior to her and another round of the Clinton-Bush greed and fanaticism. The last time we elected an actor for President we got Reagan and, although I never voted for him, he wasn't half bad as a President. I think Thopson is a moderate in the same mold.
So Fred finally came out of the closet,WOW.
Thompson isn't very charismatic. He isn't the Reagonesque candidate that republicans are looking for.
Goodness. I thought I would turn blue from holding my breath over whether or not that gaseous approximation of a statesman was in or out.
Mr Bobblehead is in, Go figure. He looks Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. He;s to sick, McCain's too ole, rudy is a cross dresser, romney is a Flip-flopper. The GOP ( Gay ole Perverts)is  a sad state of affairs.
Mike Brooks, Eugene, Oregon, you say, "The last time we elected an actor for President we got Reagan and, although I never voted for him, he wasn't half bad as a President. I think Thopson is a moderate in the same mold."  ARE YOU KIDDING ME!  I can only hope your comment was made with contradictory sarcasm.  Thompson is a rednecked, cousin marrying, dixie-singing, bible beating, NRA loving, ultra-conservative.  His so called experience is nothing compared to Reagan's - who was the governor of California before he became president.  At least Hillary was in the white house for 8 years, is married to a former president, and has over 7 years under her belt as the junior senator from NY, with a great record of accomplishments, and with a proven record of working with the other side of the aisle. Thompson was a do-nothing senator from a backwoods state with no real record to rely on who is already more in the mold of Bush II divisive and incompetent.  Other than that, he's got ZERO experience and in my book, is grossly unqualified to be president of any country.  In fact, he's not even qualified to be president of the Sanjaya Malacar [of american idol] fan-club!
Oh my god I m so shocked fred is in ,didn't see that coming for 5 months ,surprise to the republicans.Fred is in amazing just out of the blue think of the excitement.
There is room for you potty mouthed liberals in Fred country.  I take it by your considerable level of hate, you are taking him seriously, as you should.  He will make Hillary or Obama look downright stupid head to head.  Fred is no Bush, just as Hillary is no Bill.  Her hanging down things are a little bigger than Bill's I think!
I have to disagree with Juan who called Fred a second rate actor.  Ronald Reagan was a second rate actor.  Fred Thompson is no Ronald Reagan.....  Fred is a third rate actor.

I think the real news here, in this First Read post is that Fred's middle initial is D, making him forever Freddy.  He desperately needs a nickname.  I nominate:

"Freddy Unready"
Pat, Huntington Station, NY - Your statement and blind hatred and support of the money grubbing Hillary is exactly why I wont vote for her. Neiher, I trust, will about 25% or more of normally Democratic voters, which is why her candidacy is not just doomed, it will do genuine arm to Democratic candidates accros the board. She is wrong on outsourcing, wrong on guest workers, wrong on H1-B visas, wrong on needed corporate controls. She is an insider and is completely out of touch with ordinary people. What she apparently is counting on are her feminist/pro-choice credentials, but you had better understand that jobs-jobs-jobs trump that and even Iraq -  as the economy sours into 2008, her ignoring working people is going to cost her votes. Mine is already gone. By the time the general election rolls around, it will cost the Democratic party in general. At least Fred Thompson recognizes the danger of outsourcing and H1-B visas.
"Are you ready, let's do the Freddy" -- Freddy and the Dreamers
juan: If you catch any campaign contributors to Thompson who are on the lam from the law get right back to me. If you catch Thompson taking monies from Murdoch and then criticizing others for doing the same thing, ditto. If you see Thompson wailing about ''two Americas''while getting kickbacks from off-shore hedge fund firms, see:above. We will also point out here that Thompson voted against Clintons impeachment and to his additional credit, went after Chinese contributors to the DNC who were then fleeing the country like the rats that they were.
Unfortunately, very few of the candidates are truly qualified as being the leader of anything. None of the Democratic candidates can boast experience in leading any organization more relevent than a college newspaper.

Giuliani, Romney and Huckabee have all been chief executives of organizations that require leadership and vision.
Pat, Huntington Station, NY:
'......has over 7 years under her belt as the junior senator from NY, with a great record of accomplishments......'

Pat: What has Hillary accomplished as a Senator ?
Other than voting for the Iraq War ?
What bills did she intorduce ?
What bills did she pass ?
What is her 'great record of accomplishments' ?
Wake-up, Fred Thompson is just an actor and not even a good one. Of course that did not stop g.w.bush
Well I was closer to the mark than I thought when I wrote:
"I think the real news here, in this First Read post is that Fred's middle initial is D, making him forever Freddy".

It turns out that a deep dark secret of the Thompson campaign is that his real name, his birth name, is not Fred or Frederick.  Its Freddie!  Here is the LA Times story:

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2007/09/freddie.html

So. make that nickname:

Freddie Unready

First we learn that Mitt's real name is Willard, now Freddie.  What's next?  Will it turn out that Rudy is really Rudewell?
LOL, the party of Abe, Teddy, and Ike only has the current lineup of canidates for President. Now a lazy ol' actor, ex-lobbyist is suppose to be better! I usually take polls with a "grain of salt" but the poll showing a majority of Republicans unhappy with their choices of canidates sure looks real to me.
Convienient that Fred will not show his contributors until after the first several primary elections.
Next we'll find that J.D.'s real name is Mildred or Percy.
