Oh-eight (R): Huck’s crossover appeal

Posted: Friday, September 07, 2007 9:03 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

GIULIANI: Giuliani picked up the endorsement of former Illinois Gov. Jim Thompson (R) Thursday. The Daily Herald suggests the endorsement will help Giuliani increase his campaign cash in Illinois, where he has raised less than Romney and McCain.

HUCKABEE: Today, the chattering class's favorite dark horse GOP candidate, Mike Huckabee, does his turn walking a day in the shoes of an SEIU worker. What's remarkable about this event? All of the Democrats have done it, but Huckabee's the only Republican to do so. In fact, to date, Huckabee's the only Republican to nab a union endorsement (the machinists endorsed him in the GOP primary, while endorsing Clinton in the Dem primary). Is there any other self-described conservative candidate doing more to show crossover appeal than Huckabee? Imagine if Huckabee is on the national ticket and SEIU's Andy Stern has nothing but nice things to say about him?

MCCAIN: The New Hampshire Union Leader called McCain the “clear and convincing winner” of Wednesday’s debate and also says “reports of his political death are premature. And he is breathing new life into his campaign in the only place such a feat is possible: in New Hampshire.”

ROMNEY: More debate reaction from the Concord Monitor’s Dorgan, who talked to Mark Riss about his pointed question for Mitt Romney on Iraq. He “said that it felt good to get his grievance off his chest and that he's accepted Romney's apology. But Riss, who said he's an undecided independent who leans Republican, said he wasn't satisfied with the answer.” Riss: "What I was looking for from him was a response as to how he would end the conflict in Iraq, and he did not provide that to me. In fact, he did not even come close." Also, NH GOP chair Fergus Cullen said Giuliani “wasn't knocked off his game." More Cullen: “"I think governor Huckabee continued to distinguish himself. He's clearly the best wit in the crowd."

The New York Times: “Mitt Romney is set to propose eliminating taxes on most investment earnings for families that make under $200,000 a year, the first in what his campaign says will be a series of announcements throughout the fall on the specifics of his tax policy… Mr. Romney’s advisers have estimated that his plan will benefit 95 percent of American families, costing the federal government about $32 billion a year.” The campaign says to make up for that loss of revenue, it proposes to veto “any budget that does not cap discretionary nonmilitary spending at the rate of inflation minus one percentage point, as well as find savings in Medicare and Medicaid.

TANCREDO: "I believe we are in a clash of civilizations,” said Tancredo in New Hampshire, per the New Hampshire Union Leader. He also called the United Nations "an anti-America debating society."

I've crossed the Huck off my list of possible POTUS. He says we have to stay in Iraq & finish the job to preserve our honor. Flawed thinking, just like dubya. What was the REAL "Job"? To screw the Iraqis out of their oil, destabilize the region for the neo-con agenda. Finishing this job is honorable? The only Repub that has his head on straight is Ron Paul, & there's no way they tap him for the nomination..
Huckabee seems like a nice guy; however, with one eye staring at the camera and another wondering off, the guy's electability factor pars with Mad Eye Moody.
Ron Paul Won Post-Debate Text Poll. NH Fox GOP Debate, 9/5/07.

Final Results:

Ron Paul 33%
Huckabee- 18%
Giuliani- 15%
McCain- 14%
Romney- 12%

The highest point in Debate was discussion between RON PAUL and Huckabee about Iraq. Period.

Please, explain why you do not mention these most important facts in you article. Thank you.
Seriously is Huckabee saying we are all responsible for Iraq? I have opposed the Iraq war from the start just like many others I know. If Huckabee thinks he can win votes by blaming the American people for "breaking" Iraq he is retarded. Ron Paul was right, George Bush and a few people he took his marching orders from were responsible for Iraq not the American people. Stop blaming America Huckabee.
Right on PJ.  Huck's a nice guy, but this war is no longer about "honor" it's about stupidity and sticking to a failed policy.  The ONLY republican that gets it is Ron Paul.  All self described small government conservatives should vote for Dr. Paul.  Otherwise, what is the point.  The Cons are dead in 2008 otherwise.
I think Huckabee is a wonderful candidate, and exactly what this country needs.  Once they start discussing issues other than Iraq and immigration, and start focusing on other issues that affect Americans everyday: education, healthcare, jobs, etc...Huckabee will really shine.  He's clearly the most polished speaker, doesn't have the money for expensive consultants to script answers for him, and he's the only candidate (in either party) that's not a millionaire.  Couple that with the fact that he's never worked in DC as a politician or a lobbyist, and he's even more attractive.  I think he's the only one with real solutions for the common American.
Once again First Read is asleep at the wheel, calling Huckabee the 'crossover' candidate.  I have a normal job, and even I know that Paul is by far the 'crossover' candidate.  He receives the support of Democrats and Independents, on top of actual conservative Republicans.  Just do a poll of how many Paul supporters used to consider themselves Independent or Democrats, vs Huckabee or any other candidate's supporters, and Paul's support will be by far the most mixed.
I had absolutely nothing to do with "breaking" Iraq. I said before we ever went in there is nothing in Iraq worth one drop of American blood. As a proud former Marine Vietnam combat disabled vet, I would much rather have seen my brothers in arms come home alive, rather than have to die for some full of sh*t politicians "honor". ALL of the troops serve and fight with honor-the DISHONOR is the politicians who perpetuate this nonsence-and that includes gasbag mccain!
Lets settle the honor question without more innocent deaths.  Bush or any Republican candidate stand-in who feels people should die over honor should challenge Bin Laden to a duel to the death and be done with it.  Otherwise it is dishonorable to send other people to die for your honor.
Pastor Huckabe is so wrong---the american people with God by their side did not lead us into Iraq. The NEOCON Bush whitehouse and pentagon did.Guess he does not recall the anti-war protest even before the war.He is allwrapped up in the rapture and armaggedon to be the leader of this country.Preacher Bush has proved this to be a losing situation. Please give us a break from all this pious crap
Mike Huckabee is the only authentic conservative in the race. He doesn't compromise on the issues that are important to Republican, but also appeals to cross-over independent voters on important issues like the economy, healthcare, education, and The Fair Tax. He is the rising star in the GOP primary because he is refreshing — bringing commonsense solutions to the real problems Americans face.
In your article you ask the question, "Is there any other self-described conservative candidate doing more to show crossover appeal than Huckabee?"

The answer is yes, Ron Paul. I'm not just saying that because I support him, which I do, I'm saying it because it happens to be true. Most people who are paying attention to this race will admit it, if they are honest and want to be unbiased.
Ron Paul is strong in his convictions, but his anti-war stance is his only crossover appeal.  He wants to drastically reduce taxes and the size of government, eliminating many government programs.  He also wants to overturn Roe vs. Wade, keep the government out of "separation of church and state", etc.  Those aren't ideas that are appealing to most democrats.  Huckabee is clearly the only candidate in either party with crossover appeal.  He's been endorsed by the Machinists Union (first GOP candidate ever), and he's also the only GOP candidate being supported by the NEA and other unions.  Paul crosses over on one issue...Huckabee crosses over on many issues.
The Huckster is a non issue, a nothing.
Huckabee is very appealing to normal people who are not blinded by one or another crazy ideology. Romney also had been extending a common sense image, but maybe it's a family trait to shoot oneself down with some dumb statement. Regarding Ron Paul, there's a great article contrasting his anti-war stance with Obama's:

It is so easy to talk about Iraq as a "failed policy" from the comfort of your living room in the United States.  It is not a "policy" to those in Iraq who will die in a blood bath if we hastily withdraw.  I agree that it is time to start strong-arming the leaders of Iraq.  It is past time for action on their part.  We can not be there forever.  But we simply can not turn the page on a situation we helped create.
Ben, Chicago:  I'd like to meet ONE actual conservative republican who supports Ron Paul.  Certainly they aren't too obvious in Las Vegas. And, "defending the Constitution", posting non-scientific poll results proves one thing--his cadre of supporters dial the phone more than anyone else.

Not one pundit nor scientific poll showed anything like what that poll claims.  How'd you're boy do when real people voted in Ames?

And Huckabee ain't a conservative. Conservatives don't call for things like nationwide smoking bans nor raise state spending 60%, nor grow state payrolls by 20%.
I don't see no one talking about Congressman Tom Tancredo. I mean the guy has the most consistent and most conservative record among all the clowns running for republican nomination. Tancredo is a true conservative and it pains me when conservatives abondon their true friends and endorse disguised liberals like Guliani, Romney and Huckbee who recently rediscovered themselves as conservatives. Liberals aside I strongly feel that we conservatives have to stick together to fight liberal democrats agenda of gay marriage, islamo facism and mexican invasion.
I personally will not vote for any other candidate than Congressman Tom Tancredo...Go Tancredo!
Fred Thompson is a TRUE Republican.

None of the Democracts will be able to pull in crossover voters in the general election. So the next President will be Mike Huckabee, John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, and maybe Mitt Romney. My guess and it is just a guess at this time the Republican team will be John McCain and Mike Huckabee.
Is it my imagination or has the tone of this blog changed?  I see a lot more conservatives blogging about the pros and cons of their candidates instead of just coming on to attack the Democratic candidates. I find the reading more interesting and pleasant. I can actually learn something.
I was in that focus group  with Luntz and it was a scam. No way did McCain win anything. He just sounded a bit less nutcase than he has in the past. None of my comments were aired. It was fixed....McCain is NO REPUBLICAN..

Go Ron Paul! He was the clear winner.
