Fred's excellent adventure

Posted: Friday, September 07, 2007 9:09 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The campaign is trying to beat back this notion that there's an enthusiasm gap. Its e-campaign director sent out a memo last night claiming:
-- Since 12:01 am last night, over 150,000 unique visitors have viewed its website. Some points of comparison: Mitt Romney's website registered 124,000 visitors in July; Rudy Giuliani's website registered 116,000 visitors over the same 31 day period; John McCain's website registered 104,000 visitors in July
-- Also, since 12:01 am last night, over 3000 donors have donated online
-- Lastly, 16,000 new "Friends of Fred" have signed up to volunteer for Fred's campaign."

On "GMA" this morning, Thompson didn't commit any news, but he seemed to take a shot at Romney when asked if the former Massachusetts governor was running TV ads showing him running as a way to compare his health and vigor to Thompson. Thompson responded that he'd seen these Romney ads and wondered, "What's he running from?" Thompson was very deliberative in the interview, the same Thompson we've become familiar with.

Thompson manager Bill Lacy held a bus gaggle yesterday, and here are some highlights, courtesy of NBC/National Journal campaign reporter Adam Aigner-Treworgy. Lacy said the campaign raised $363,000 since midnight two nights ago.

Lacy also made the claim that there really isn't a strong GOP frontrunner, saying there's a huge undecided out there. “Our party traditionally has a very, very strong front-runner, basically since Reagan, but this year it's wide open. Now we've done one piece of research, John McLaughlin our pollster has done one piece of research, and we believe this race is wide open."

Lacy on Giuliani's criticism of Thompson that he's never held an executive position: “I understand where he's coming from, the mayor has to make as good a case as he can, and he has been a big city mayor and no one can poo-poo that, but he's never been in an executive position even comparable to being President."

The Washington Post says Thompson “took his bid for the White House to the campaign trail Thursday, vowing to compete aggressively for the support of Iowans and pitching steady, experienced and conservative leadership… In Thursday's speech, he pledged fidelity to a series of conservative principles -- limited government, an aggressive foreign policy and lower taxes -- and promised a commitment to securing the borders and appointing conservative judges.”

The New York Times looks at Thompson's attempt to "don the Reagan mantle" and finds while he's certainly conservative on many issues, he's diverged from the Reagan path quite a bit as well.

The Los Angeles Times on the turnout: "The crowd was relatively thin for the national launch of a celebrity's bid for the White House. "Middle of the workday," explained Robert Haus, Thompson's Iowa campaign director. But that did not stop Thompson from declaring: "Wow. This is a wonderful turnout."

The Des Moines Register’s Yepsen called Thompson’s announcement “underwhelming” and added: “It wasn’t very impressive. The crowd of a few hundred didn’t seem enthused. Thompson’s oratory didn’t soar but was somewhat rambling. He would have been better off just to repeat the announcement statement he posted on his Web site. It is much better written and cogently delivered.” And here’s some strategy advice: “As the Thompson campaign winds it’s way across Iowa for the next two days, the actor might want to work on his lines. Punch up the message. Lose the note cards. Pump up the volume. Give us a little stump oratory. And how about a specific policy initiative or two?”

Should Thompson be upset that he's not even getting the most Republican Hollywood support? Apparently, Giuliani has more support for Hollywood types.

The Boston Globe says, “Rival campaigns have already prepared thick dossiers of ‘opposition research’ chronicling the former Tennessee senator's zigzags on such key issues as abortion rights, immigration, a gay marriage ban, and campaign finance reform

Guliani will be the repub nominee. Hillary will crush him. Rudy is gross and dresses up like an old lady for fun. Hillary is cool and intelligent and is a great mom.
Fred is too moderate and or too same as the above. What could he bring to the party?
I do not think that he knows what is going on but being a lesser known actor, he wants to go to the big screen and has a bad script.
Cheers
Fred who? Will Barney Rubble be his VP?
On the wikipedia site they say that Dr. Ron Paul is the unmistakable winner of the Presidentcy. Why does
Fred run?  Oh sorry he uses a golf cart, old you know and not in good shape.
Cheers
run fred run, we are talking about fred flinstone aren't we?
(Yawn)
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Fred Thompson seems like quite an interesting person. Knowing that soon I would like to start a family, makes me really support Fred Thomspon. His views and ideas seem to have the security of our country and the economic developement right on top.
watched Fred---when he is not grinning he looks like the yellow happyface upside down--and he did not say onee word or fact different that the Bushies---egad can we stand another 4 years of the same chaos and murder?all the republicans except for Ron Paul look and act and speak like Bush clones.
He sidestepped Sawyer's questions about Pakistan and, of course, she didn't follow-up on his ridiculous 'answers'. Ah well, just another day in the world of corrupt media and evasive politicians. Yawn.
Fred Thompson strikes me as the ultimate vacuous candidate.  Doesn't really stand for much, doesn't really say much (of substance), doesn't really get too animated, just sort of....there.  His trophy wife would be running the show.
Got to be a reason so many of his campaign aides have quit before he even announced.  He's another flash in the pan.
I thought, what ignorant and misinformed comments are on these blogs - sounds like a bunch of grade schoolers out for recess. Then I realized I was on a left wing rag and that helped me understand the moronic diatribe here.
Good luck losers, luck is all you have to count on because the Democrats cannot muster anything worth, even, the waste of good commercial time on t.v.
Currently am just sitting back, watching, reading & listening.  Being as we Americans can only believe half of each of the above I think it a bit too early for a definite decision.  I will say however that I am really paying attention to Fred, Barack & John.
Better a "lazy" "old" President with a "trophy wife" that has good conservative values. Than a "cold" "bitter" "divisive" "gay pandering" "say anything to be elected" "politics as usual" washington insider" "beeyatch" with a "trophy husband" that sleeps with every overwieght slut that stops under his desk. Not to mention her socialist anti-american agenda that will wipe what's left of our country off the map.
Go lefties, we have everything to lose........
John Doe, poor angry boy. Why don't you visit a local mens bathroom and relieve some tension. You'll feel better then.
bb  Let's see. You're a woman and a Clinton supporter, right? So, it's okay for you to trash "John Doe" using derogatory language, calling into question his masculinity? Dumb box. How do you like it?
Fred Thompson is the anti-chris warned about in the book of revelations.  If he's elected, the world is sure to end as predicted on Dec. 23, 2012.
Fred ain't Reagan. I voted for Reagan twice and I have voted Democrat before then and every time after. Reagan offered hope; you felt good about yourself and the country every time he spoke. Fred couldn't make you feel good about a free meal.
John Doe, you for that matter you can take JB from Florida with you! Fred Thompason will destroy us even worse than Bush.  He did nothing while a senator. Why should we think he'll do anything as president?  The Hillary bashers are nut-cases.
John Doe - jerry, is that you?

JB - Wow! Such calm and reasoned logic is overwhelming.  No wonder our country is having so many problems - basic, simple and angry rant-laced thinking processes such as yours are truly sad (i.e., I don't like that individual, so I will just call them names).  Behavior of a 6 year old.
Mike of Oregon, whats a dumb box? Is that your conservative attempt to insult thats totally confusing or what? A dumb box is the best you can do? You naughty, nasty, nasty man.
People considering voting for Freddie (his REAL first name) must consider the obvious.  Cancer is a terrible disease and we all want to see a cure.  We all want victims of this disease to achieve remission and eventually be around when a cure comes.  But, the reality is that cancer is a huge burden on a person.  It taxes one's energy, thinking ability, and outlook.  Freddie is in remission now and with luck he will not see a recurrence.  But, the stress of running for president, and, if elected, the even greater stress of being president has brought down many healthy men.  Look at how much the average president ages during their term.

Freddie will do what Bush Jr. has done.  He will delegate most of the job to others, like his VP.  We will be seeing another stealth president like Cheney, hiding in his undisclosed location while the president rests at one of his estates.  And, in all likelihood, it will be a short term before Thompson is replaced by his VP.  So, when voting for him, you are really voting for whomever he picks as his VP.

The only real difference between Freddie and GW is that while the current president spends most of his time cutting brush or riding around on his bicycle, Freddie will be prostrate on his Barcalounger.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Overdose?

You'd think you'd wait until quitting time.
"Fred Thompson is the anti-chris"

Really??  Of which Chris to you refer??  Chris Matthews??  I thought the anti-chris was Tucker Carlson, the pundant who can't be fired.  (His daddy is boss).
J.D. in California.  You've got to be kidding right?  I mean n#1 you are trying to sway voter opinion because of cancer?  that's just pathetic.  The other issue how do you know what goes on at the White House and for that matter who does what?  Are you some kind of expert do you hang out there...no wait you must have some type of executive privaledge that allows you to participate in and around White House functions and have lunch with the President.  How else could we explain how you seem to have such great insight LOL!.  That being said you don't know Fred.  Grow up JD and present a real argument with facts not THE insane rantings of a disgruntled democrap.
It’s funny how the two politicians most despised by the media are the only ones who are offering any ideas or making any attempt to figure out the truth for our it’s own sake.

Gingrich and Ron Paul are the only two political figures who have contributed in even the slightest meaningful way to the debate over what direction we need to take country and what the solutions are for getting there.

Here is what the rest have offered so far:

Fred Thompson:
Regan was actor and so I am. While Regan helped build and lead a country wide conservative movement before wining the presidency, I have always been the first out the door when 5:00 rolls around and its time go home after a long day of doing nothing in Senate. I have played a number of crooked politicians on TV; you should see me in distinguished gentleman with Eddie Murphy. If elected to the presidency I promise to play the part of that corrupt politician better than anyone else.

Mitt Romney: I am tall, I have a great smile, and most importantly I have the best hair of any politician in decades. Other than that I really don’t have much to offer. Though I am fully capable of reciting meaningless platitudes like “I am for success” and the ever powerful “I will support learning.” However I am a member of a cult, but even so, right wing religious types will still like me because my cult is very anti gay and anti abortion.

Rudy Giuliani: I am running for the republican nomination even though I favor many socialist big government solutions for governing. Republicans will still vote for me though because I am a hard core patriotic nationalist that promises to mercilessly hammer down on anyone perceived to be criminal and I will never hesitate to inject our military might around the world.

That reminds me, who was that guy again who ran for about 50 years ago. At the time the country was bitterly divided between the hard core communists on the left and ultra conservatives on the right. The guy won the nomination by scooping up all the votes from folks in the middle that happened to like his socialist ideas but also admired his strong nationalist willingness to fight and never bow down to the soviets like many on the left were doing. If I remember correctly now, his political party was called the Nationalist Socialist Party, yep that was it. Though I guess it was more popularly know by its acronym the Nazis. Oh yea hitler, how could I forget.

Hillary: vote for me because my husband was president once. (Even though he has not been real husband for 20 years and I hardly know the man. Monica or Jenifer flowers may have had more luck picking up his presidential traits)

Obama: I have no experience what so ever, but I can say the phrase “I am for change” a hundred times without offering any hint to what changes I would make. (Unless of course if you think changing the color of the president’s skin is the sole type of change that can solve every problem form terrorism, Iraq, to health care, to social security failure, to poverty and the economy.)
