Last night's Univision debate

Posted: Monday, September 10, 2007 9:18 AM by Domenico Montanaro

Per NBC's Lauren Appelbaum, in the first presidential debate ever broadcast in Spanish, the issues were not solely focused on Hispanic areas -- as candidates also answered questions on troop withdrawal in Iraq, health care, and education, in addition to questions on immigration and relations with Latin America.

The debate was broadcast on Univision, the nation's largest Spanish-language network. Anchors Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas asked candidates questions in Spanish, which were then translated into English. Each candidate spoke in English -- regardless whether the presidential hopeful speaks Spanish, although Dodd and Richardson (both who are fluent in the language) got in a few lines in Spanish before the moderator reprimanded them. All of the answers were simultaneously translated into Spanish for the Univision audience. English closed captioning enabled English viewers to understand the debate.

Some of the reviews… The New York Times: “The three leading candidates, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois and former Senator John Edwards of North Carolina, had especially sharp criticism for leaders of the Republican Party. They expressed concerns that Republicans were enabling anti-immigrant feelings and even racist attitudes, or at least not taking a tougher stand against them.”

The AP: “In the first presidential debate ever broadcast in Spanish, the protracted war in Iraq competed for attention with the swirling argument over immigration.”

The format itself didn't get great reviews. The Miami Herald: "No major gaffes occurred, but the on-air translation of the candidates' answers into Spanish was spotty at times. 'It detracted tremendously from the quality of the debate,' said Eduardo Gamarra, director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean studies at Florida International University. Gamarra, who led a focus group of 19 young Hispanic Democrats who watched the debate, also criticized the candidates for giving vague responses.”

By the way, don't forget to check the ratings on this forum. Univision gets big numbers in certain markets (including Miami and L.A.). Don't be surprised if Univision nabs more viewers for this debate than some that have appeared on cable.

you are at a spanish debate and you get reprimanded for speaking spanish?  LOL!  Liberals have been giving "vague" responses since the beginning, don't expect any kind of true answers from any liberal.

By the way, this is the United States of America.  We speak English!
Hillary kicked butt.
Jerry, is that what you call the language that you speak???? I thought it was a dialect called American Redneck.
Bill Richardson continues to dominate.
Robert Catalano, right on!  I had to pull out my English to American Redneck pocket dictionary to understand his babble.
Jerry - You contradict yourself.  On one hand you criticize people who are reprimanded for speaking Spanish, then you say two sentences later that everyone here should speak English; which is it?  That kind of contradictory response is about as vague and untrue as it gets (so by your logic, I guess that makes you a liberal).
Well, Jerry, things change. You just cannot expect this country to stay the same way - the same white bread and butter country you have always known.

Change is natural... it is a normal process. Fighting change is a waste of time... you will lose in the end. Just embrace it.
Would have loved to see 'Fredo' there explaining how being a political appointee was so much better than good honest hard work like father had to do.
Change is natural... it is a normal process. Fighting change is a waste of time... you will lose in the end. Just embrace it.

Exactly.  This is the same process the Democrats are going though today.  They are beginning to understand that we will win in Iraq.  Rather then fight it, they should embrace it.

Good advice M.Boley.  Keep up the good work.
Hillary will be our next president! We love you Hillary!
Boley----I'm not afraid of change, but I do expect the law of the land to be followed.  Having a debate in spanish is not my idea of a debate.  Last time I looked(and even that makes me wonder at times)we are in the United States of America.  We speak English and that is the way it ought to be.  If I need to speak other people's language I will travel to their country.  Until that day comes, If you live in America, you speak English.  If you come running to me screaming in spanish that your house is burning down, you may as well kiss your house goodbye, because I won't understand what the devil you are talking about.

I didn't even border to watch it since it is in spanish but i'll watch the English Version on you tube
Let's cede everything to Mexico - then we won't have to use english, everyone can speak spanish.  We won't have to worry about illegals sneaking across the border as it will be their border, and why worry about terrorists - the country will be too poor to matter to them!
Hilary is just another washington insider that will say anything to get elected.  BUT GUESS WHAT PEOPLE:  She doesnt mean any of it.  She is another George W Bush in-waiting.  If she won the office of the presidency she would let others dictate policy (see Dick Cheney).  She has NOOO judgement dispite being a 'house wife' for 35 years and senator for 8.
BARACK OBAMA is the candidate of change.  HE WON THE DEBATE!!  Havard/Princeton degrees, opposes the war from the start, Been in office for 12 straight years (State Senator and now US Senator).  Why cant y'all see through Hillary's B..S?
Jerry what law of land do you speak of, by the way are you sure english is not your second language. youall no trailer park english spoken here, get grip texas trash!
jerry/corpus christi texas / I have to agree with you jerry, one nation=one language, just won't work any other way, pandering to illegal aliens is not a feather in either parties hat
Hillary thought they were speaking Italian.
Obama, Richardson, Kunsinch and Gravel(?) got the bigest applaused during the debate.
I wasn't a fan of Hillary before, but now  hope there is no chance she'll make it. Doesn't she think that talking to us would have a better effect. I heard her yelling into the microphone more than once now, and that disturbs me. She sounds like my mom.
Thank you, Citizenj for the information.  Unfortunately, since there still is a segment of the U.S. population that continues to believe that Sadaam had anything to do with 9/11, I doubt that such factual data will have any effect.

Six years later, and some individuals still believe in the Sadaam/9-11 link.  Amazing.  Bush and co. sold this lie for several years, over and over.
I don't see how debating in front of a crowd that can't vote is going to help the Democrats. You have to know the English language in order to become a citizen of the United States. And you have to be a citizen to vote. This was a race debate considering Richardson pointed out that "his people" were not allowed to hear from candidates in "their language". Well, these candidates are American presidential (that we are lead to believe) candidates, not Mexican, Latino or Chinese. If Richardson wants to represent "his people", then maybe running for president in a Latin American country should be his option. In regards as to why we are not building a fence in Canada, the Canadians respect our immigration laws.
I think this is a true sign of democracy and a huge step to even greater things.  Language is language, we will always try to find a way to understand each other... there are troops in Iraq of native spanish speakers, and they did not object on a language barrier to go out there and fight for some of those people posting on this blog that might think their language is not as valuable as english.  I am a first generation Mexican-Ameican and I am extremely proud of my language, and I will defenitely continue to teach my children, nieces and nephews and everyone that is around me the beauty of their native language, regardless of living in the United States or not.  That is what educated individuals do, they promote diversity and tolerance, rather than opression and ignorance.
On the dual language deal, China, the most populated country in the world, deals with two languages - Cantonese and Mandarin. Canada deals with French and English. The former Soviet Union dealt with many languages. Spanish is in the US culture. How many of our cities are Spanish names - say like Corpus Christi? Those advocating "English only" say " it's our country now so get with the program". On the contrary, I say that along with reading, writing and arithmetic we should enhance our required school curricula to include Spanish and if we really want to plan ahead, Chinese.
so when is the debate in German going to be held?  French?  Russian?  Polish? Japanese? Italian? Greek?  Oh wait that's right, those folks came here to be part of the country and enjoy the freedoms and responsibilities that come with it.

The only people that benefit from the second language and a split nation are the backers of Univision and the pandering left. Come here legally and pay taxes like the rest of us instead of just draining our school systems and emergency rooms.  By all means celebrate the heritage of the country you come from, but without tearing down this one.  Otherwise where else would we all go?

BTW...I know not all Hispanic immigrants are here illegally.  To assume that would be as arrogant as assuming that all Hispanics should vote for the Dems simply because LULAC tells them to and the dems hold a debate translated into Spanish.
Mike Gravel won. Hands down.
Everyone one else was politics as usual.
Jerry,

You're not a fireman I hope.  er, fireperson I mean.

My damn ancestors must not have gotten the memo, the one about the "law of the land".

Good thing my wife is from England....she doesn't bitch too much about us stealing their language, bless her heart.

I hope the written word never goes away, when I listen to people from Texas talk I expect a wad of marbles (or maybe just a wad) to hit me in the forehead.
Lee, this thread isn't about Iraq. I will give you points for effort in trying to change the subject but you still failed in the end.
Jerry, if you think the USA will always be the same you've got another thing coming. Remember what happened to the Soviet Union... the same thing can happen here. Might not be in your lifetime but it still is a possibility. Nothing lasts forever.
Howie, just vote democratic.
Gravel is the only real candidate!!! Gravel 2008!!!! He is the best!
If you want to see just how much the Dems are willing to pander - and how much of a racial demagogue Bill Richardson is - here are excerpts from the transcript:

http://lonewacko.com/blog/archives/007037.html

Also includes a lie from Hillary and John Edwards supporting serf labor.
Yo jerry this is the United States Of America we let YOU live!  7000 Iraqi refugees on the way to Corpus Christi.  Most will sign up for military duty, great signing bonuses. As mush as $20,000!!!
G.I. Joe:

Good, we need them!  Not enough skilled laborers here, quality of mexicans lacking.  Maybe they can do better!

Greg R:

Please inform your wife that we improved the english language here.  made it more understandable and we got rid of yorkshire pudding and meat pies.  made them tastier and better.  After all, we had to save England in the last two world wars, they should be thanking us each and every day!

Yeah well, G I Joe, you better hope that those 'refugees' don't do the same thing bin Laden did after his CIA training paid for by you and I.

Might wanna put them through those waterboarding exercises just to be sure about their loyalties.
K., From Austin-
I defenitely respect your opinion, concerning why we don't have debates in other foreign language, well quite simply because hispanic-spanish speaking individuals are what make up most of California, Texas, Florida, Arizona and New Mexico.  California, Texas and Florida are 3 of the top 5 states with the most electoral votes, clearly this shows that unlike Italians, Germans, French, Polish, Chineese etc. we are a great majority of voting individuals that do speak spanish and do speak english and feeling that a candidate would take time to embrace diversity, that's what clearly marks the difference, lets promote tolerance, embrace culture, and if you don't want to see a candidate in a spanish channel debating over hispanic issues then by all means do not watch it, but it does not mean that the idea is wrong.  Remember that many people have a harder time understanding english, but they are good working citizens that for some reason or another have not been able to fully engage in this same language.  I do hope to continue seeing such cultural diversity in one country under one flag, acculturation and assimilation to an undefined culture would be erroneous, that is truly what is great about America, a culture that is so diverse, that can't be completely defined.
Jerry,
Like I've said previous posting:  The Brits paid their debt in full, thanks to your bush.  Too bad their debt was wasted on a vendetta because "he tried to kill my daddy".

As far as improved language.  Are you talking about in texas or your own house?  You've improved the English language?  Can I have an example....oh wait, here it comes "doofus" or better yet:  Doofus Amongus, the great texan turd blossom.  man i'm coming up with all kinds of improvements.  You're right, silly words & names and phrasing and dissembling just like YOUR leader
After 20 plus years I just resigned from the DNC. Why?

1. Its candidates are hobnobing with La Raza, whose motto is "Everything for our race, nothing for others.". La Raza wants to conquer the Western UNA, and kick Americans out. Its official policy is for members not to learn English.

3. Dems are only supporting lawless illgals when it to immigration. That only benefits hispanics. Repubicans with their rule of law legal immigration support, benefits Americans of all races.

4. is supporting the lawless illegals, dems have dumbed the working american. Illegals means low wages for Americans, and as long as dems keep giving amnesty, it will be low wages.

5. Dems now supporting Spanish as an official language. I speak 3 languages but they NEVER should have debated on Spanish TV.

The Democratic National Party should now call itself the Hispanic National Party.
I can speak just enough Spanish to be dangerous to myself.  Of the few things that I can work on achieving it is trying to master another language.  How great would that be!  I am so envious of people that can speak multiple languages fluently.  Ryan Crocker, from Spokane, (your welcome) can speak fluent Arabic...... we need more ambassadors like him.
K, Austin,

I speak 3 languages fluently and have lived in 2 different countries where they tried the multilingual program. It does not work and divides a country.

There is only one language in the USA. English. Period. If we do anything else, it will tear this country apart. Which is exactly what many hispancis and the President of Mexico wants. They want "reconquer" the Western USA which they call Aztlan. They say once their numbers are sufficient, they will have a vote and kick the Americans out. Please note, that while not every Mexican is racist, there are  a very, very, very large number who are.

That is why La Raza has an official policy that its members are NOT to learn English.

And over the last 10 years, various Presidents of Mexico when speaking to Mexican Americans have reminded them that while they may now have American citizenship, their true loyalty and obedience is to Mexico, not uncle Sam.

So don't be naive about what is going on. This is not just some illegal immigrations looking for work. It is aided and abetted by the Mexican government itself. And they are looking for territory. And they have been working on this for at least a decade.
Bettybb,
Your one of the 33% aren't you?  The DNC line is BS.  Just a recap:  Sadam had nothing to do w/911
Unite State is a loand of immigrants, ok.
The only native people were the "pieles rojas", ok.
so you should change your mind when you are talking about the immigrants. Don't forget it.
Well we are stuck with one MEAT PIE. Jerry BS with gravy!
CitzenJ says: "For those who think the "surge" is working: "

You are using the wrong metric.  The surge is working because the number of liberals that are totally po-ed about the war is rising.

The liberals hate the fact that we are going to win this thing.
Bettybb, so let me get this straight, Mexico backing La Raza is similar to China backing the Viet Minh?
What do all of you accomplish by insulting each other? You don't sway anyone's opinion by being abusive and impudent.  This discussion board sounds like political debates I had with my classmates in eighth grade.
so please, any one tell me, has any one ever heard anything more blatantly retarded and absurd than people claiming not to be racist, believe all illegals are hispanic and that "a very, very, very large number" of them are racist? Almost as blatantly retarded retarded and absurd as the conspiracy theory involving "Aztlan" how many terror plots have been uncovered? how many people been arrested? how many prominent groups are actively seeking that goal? ever heard the word "fear mongering"? it it is true what they say about "la raza", why is their homepage in English? since when did people became telepathic and were able read the master plan that illegals have in their minds? c'mon, people, let's keep an intelligent debate here. how 'bout thinking a little before shamelessly oozing ignorance.
Alejandro,
So my ancestors from two different families were deficient for making their kids learn English and respect the laws of their new home?  Should the debates in Wisconsin in the 1800’s have been in German?  In Chicago Polish?  NY should have had their's in which language?  Minnesota Danish or Swedish?  One can learn the language of a new home and be part of the culture without giving up pride in your heritage.  Having a group of people intentionally separating themselves from the rest of the culture does not lead to diversity.   If I move to France I know I need to learn French.  Italy/Italian.  Canada/Canadian (yes that is a joke).   I’m not going to try and force an entire country to change because of my desire to live there.  I would assume that my move would be made because of the success and the environment that exists there…why would I change that?

Realistically language is a small issue here.  How much of the money being made by illegal immigrants is being paid in taxes to support the schools?  Legal system?  Emergency and other medical services?  How much is being drained by people who are living here under the radar because of their status.  I have friends from other countries who have stayed past their visa limits...that's no way to live.  Much of the money being made by Hispanic illegal immigrants is being sent to their homeland.  Many do not view the US as their home, but want the benefits of living here.  The woman who was just deported and is now supposedly a hero for many in LA regarding immigration is a great example of that attitude.  Whether it’s a concerted effort or not, it is happening and it is draining our ability to provide a safety net for others who are already here…including Hispanics who are here legally.

Most of us really just want to see the laws followed the same by everybody.  We do not need “new legislation” to pad the political ego’s of Kennedy and his buddies.  We had legislation in the 80’s that lead to an explosion of illegal immigration from everywhere, so ultimately we know that will do little to solve the problem.  I know Hispanics are some of the hardest working people in this country and most appreciate the freedoms and opportunities that still exist here.  But there is a definite danger to continue to allow the draining of our gov’t resources by people (wherever they come from) who do not want to contribute to those resources.  Most of us are taxed through the roof already, is it really fair to ask us to pay more and more?
K., Austin,
I do completely agree with you, illegal immigration is completely wrong.  Although I do understand many of the reasons for leaving their home countries, I do understand it completely wrong.  The people that I am referring to, are those of us who are voters, and are part of this country and do consider this country home.  I have been living here since I was 5 years old and it was no problem learning the language, but there exists a large number of individuals who come to this country with little or no knowledge of the language, for exmample my mother.  She has tried many times to acquire the language and although she has learned some, she is still not capable of fully understanding it, she like me is a voter as well.  I really appreciate these bilingual debates because she is able to understand what questions are being asked, and what kind of response the candidates are having, in a perfect world, all english would be just wonderful, but unfortunately we do not live in that perfect world, and if we have the possibility of having these kind of debates I applaud it, now she is that much closer in making an educated decision when it comes the time to vote, she doesn't expect to be talked to in spanish, but she does appreciate it when they do, then again El Paso is very different from other cities around the U.S.
Jaime,

I agree with you... there seems to be some kind of radical thinking to bettybb who thinks Mexico might want to try to reconquer the United States haha, if you really pay attention to what is going on, and you live in a community such as mine, BORDERLAND community, you would notice that all new generations born in the United States actually don't even speak spanish anymore and the ones that do, don't speak the correct spanish, they do not see themselves different from the rest of the "American" kids they see themselves as part of the same culture and develop similar mentalities, I do urge anyone who has doubts about this to visit a border town, such as El Paso, or San Diego, you'll be really surprised at the rich and stable culture that exists, btw El Paso is 90% Mexican-American and we are the third safest city in the Nation with 500,000+ population; I don't think anyone here is planning to overtake the city and proclaim it property of Mexico any time soon, we lack those ideals; Aztlan, haha, well at least you do know some American history.
