'08 candidates on Petraeus, MoveOn

From NBC's Mark Murray
Since the hearing on Gen. Petraeus' report began this afternoon, some of the Democratic presidential candidates have issued statements arguing that the so-called surge has failed. By comparison, the GOP candidates (with the exception of Giuliani) have released statements that criticize MoveOn's full-page ad in the New York Times -- but that don't explicitly touch on Petraeus' testimony.

See below for a sampling of the comments...

THE DEMOCRATS.
Obama: "Changing the definition of success to stay the course with the wrong policy is the wrong course for our troops and our national security. The time to end the surge and to start bringing our troops home is now - not six months from now. The Iraqi government is not achieving the political progress that was the stated purpose of the surge, and in key areas has gone backwards. Our military cannot sustain its current deployments without crippling our ability to respond to contingencies around the world. It's time for a change of direction that brings our troops home, applies real pressure on the Iraqis to act, surges our diplomacy, and addresses Iraq's urgent humanitarian crisis."

Richardson: "I am saddened, but not surprised, by the recommendations of General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker on Iraq. I do not question the integrity or competence of these gentlemen, but the strategy George Bush and Dick Cheney have asked them to execute has failed. The course General Petraeus has recommended we take-- more of the same-- is unacceptable, irresponsible, and dangerous.

A Dodd spokeswoman: "The fact that there are questions about General Petraeus' report is not surprising given that it was brought to you by this White House. In contrast, independent report after report indicates that the whack-a-mole strategy has made this the bloodiest summer of the war. And by the General's admission, the so-called surge has not achieved its goal of political progress. But even more fundamentally, debating the merits of a tactic when the strategy that underlies it is failed is nothing more than a distraction from the work that needs to be done to bring this war to a close."

THE REPUBLICANS.
McCain: "In today's New York Times, the anti-war group MoveOn.org launched a McCarthyite attack on an American patriot and our commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus. This is a man who has devoted his life in service to our nation and has defended America in many battles over many years. Now he is the target of a despicable attack in one our nation's most visible newspapers. No matter where you stand on the war, we should all agree on the character and decency of this exceptional American. I would hope that the Democratic Congressional leadership and Democratic presidential candidates would also join me in publicly condemning this kind of political attack ad and the organization responsible for it in the strongest terms possible."

Romney: "As many have noted this morning, MoveOn.org's latest outrageous act is an attempt to call into question the reputation and character of General Petraeus even before he testifies in front of Congress. As the Brookings Institution's Michael O'Hanlon writes today, "General Petraeus is a straight shooter." Like the men he commands, he is risking his life to protect our freedoms here at home. We should not prejudge him or his testimony, or give him anything less than the full respect he deserves."

Thompson: "MoveOn.org has today, in effect, said that the General leading our brave troops in Iraq is betraying his country. This is the group that funds the Democratic Party. I call upon the Democratic Party and all of the Democratic candidates for President to repudiate the libel of this patriotic American."

GIULIANI.
“Today, General Petraeus provided the first look at a strategy that is getting results and an Iraq that is making progress. This is only the beginning, which is why we need to continue to listen to the assessment of General Petraeus and others on the ground so we can decide the best course of action going forward."

Giuliani continued, “The Democrats and MoveOn.org are doing a disservice to Iraq’s long-term future by jumping to political conclusions in advance of the General’s report.  These times call for statesmen, not political rhetoric.”

Doesn't surprise me....

Liberals don't like our troops anyway, probably spit on them in the airports when they come home.......

Moveon.Org....all they did was make sure the new York Times doesn't go out of business by buying ads.  With their readership down, they would take any kind of ads.
Soundbites mean nothing...this matter requires rigorous public debate on national TV. 08 Presidential run perhaps.
If Petraeus wasn't on board with the Bush exit strategy of handing the war over to the Democrats in
'09, he wouldn't be there. Gen. Shinseki is the last general who disagreed with Bush.
They bought the party, and they own it. What do expect the dems to do?
Well surprise surprise... another 'glittering generality' from Jerry.

Got any proof to back that tripe up or are you just spouting off again as usual? Are you auditioning for Rush's spot or do you have wild ambitions for competing against him?
Our troops MUST stay, listen to the general. Thousands will be slaughtered by moving out to soon. Think of just the hate towards christians in that country, with no protection they will be hunted down and killed! Don't get me wrong i want our troop home but it is to soon.
Jerry--
Things so bad that you're resorting to the rhetorical equivalent of saying "Your mother wears army boots"?
And I notice you're following the pattern of going after the boogieman of MoveOn.org rather than anything resembling reasoned debate. Disappointing.
Why are attack ads written by GOP affiliated groups okay and not the ads by DEM affiliated groups? While I found the Moveon.org disturbing at first, but it made me think about whether I could trust anyone associated with the Bush Administration anymore.
jerry/corpus christi texas--
We have buried pieces of one and welcomed home with Bar-B-Que and beer the 40% disabled one. Your assumption that all families with people on the ground in Iraq are Conservative Republicans is as wrong and simple minded as you are. Nice to see you back. You make a great poster child for everything that is wrong with this country.
Another message from the Bush presidency, Petraeus would not dare cross the lines of Bush Cheney McCain etc. Petraeus is covering his ass with Bush's cloak. He should borrow Cheney's rifle and go hunting instead. What are we gaining in this war, our young men and women, fathers and mothers sons and daughters have been killed or severely maimed. It has also caused problems in marriages, and have left widdows and widdowers broke and a very dismal look in their futures. Forget Irag, we had no business there in the first place. Let's get the hell out of Irag, our country is now in debt worst than it has ever been, don't look for Bush,Cheney and all the candidates running for president to help fill up the coffers for the national debt. Bush you are a disgrace to this nation.
Why do repukes hate our country?
Why do repukes believe Betrayus?
Why do the repukes vote for insane people?
Why do repukes live in hot climates?
Why do repukes love war?
Why do repukes hate different people.
Why do repukes hate to share?
Why do repukes act like 4 year olds?
No, Jerry, I think your wrong. No one would spit on our troops, however one might spit on Bush. Petraeus would likely not be spat on either, even tho' we all knew how his argument was going to go. And, give him the benefit of the doubt, after all he is a soldier too. Mos of us want to hear something more concrete about when this total mess is going to end. Now it seems there will be troops near the borders of Iran, and that is going to please the heck right out of them. So, to sum it all up, guess we're there for however long.........these troops who have had 3 or 4
trips to Iraq should come home forever.
atticusjo<><><>
Shut up Jerry.  I don't spit on our troops.  I hate MoveOn and am a GIANT LIBERAL.

Stick to gossip, you silly gossip girl.
JI: You're right, Shinseki WAS an honest patriot, had a viewpoint that proved correct and was escorted out. The Bush-boy lied to get us into Iraq in the first place and lies to keep us there. Fool me once, shame on you...
I can't believe McCain and Romney blew their statements; McCain by invoking McCarthyism (WTF? People blacklisted in the 50's WISH Joe McCarthy only put an ad up about them in the paper), and Romney by citing O'Hanlon, the known war propagandist who pretends to be a critic.  If either of these guys gets the nomination, they are going to get creamed in the general.  Thompson and Guiliani have a slight chance of winning the general, but only if Hillary is nominated; if Obama or Edwards get the nomination, no Republican stands a chance in 2008, no matter how much they cry about blogs and web sites.
For a man with an Ph.D from Princeton, GEN Betrayus sure looks more and more like Jerry's stupid crowd.  I wish one politician had guts enough to stand up to Bush.  Shame on you General for not being honest.  What's the worst that could happen to you, W remove you for cause?  You would be a hero if he did.
Jerry, even the stories of Vietnam vets being spit on in airports are bogus. You may have noted that many veterans who are against this war, and some who are liberal like me, post here.  How could we hate those who chose to sacrifice and serve as we did?  I wouldn't even spit on our moron commander in chief, or the fools who support him.  Go watch some Faux news or head for the recruiters office, critical thinking is quite obviously beyond your grasp.
Good post irby, this administration has rebuked quite a few generals before they found a yes man for their war. Most of the former generals said it would take far more men than was being sent to do the job and this admin. did'nt listen. Now that they found a yes man, they now want the rest of us to listen to the general now! More hipocracy. Hannity today said it was a disgrace for anyone to smear this general, yet the republicans had no problem smearing Kerry who is also a decorated soldier. Any troop who goes to battle and takes fire from the enemy is a hero in my book, but the chickenhawks found no disgust in smearing him. More hipocracy as usual. Jerry, I have two family members who are in Iraq at this moment and for you to say that we would spit on them as they returned home is so naive and vicious. I only wish that they could come home from a terribly thought out war with no conceivable victory in sight, and no clear definition of success other than quelling sectarian violence that has continually plagued this region since the beginning of time. You sir are no American, you are only a republican, and yes there is a big difference. When you continue to support bad policy just because you are strapped to a banner and follow blindly (with out reservation) when your common sense should be telling you otherwise, you are no American. Jerry, just keep waving your Republican Banner while the rest of us wave our American flag.
I LOVE MOVE ON and jerry inspires me to give yet ANOTHER donation.  I loved the AD as much as I HATE the SHRUB. RIGHT ON MOVE ON!!!
Jerry from Corpus....that is a ridiclous remark to say on a forum of any kind. NO PERSON hates our troops but we do hate how this war got started.

I have had two brothers and a nephew over there-my nephew just went back for his 3RD COMBAT TOUR they are doing a job that you don't have the courage to do.

I have served my time -20 years as a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy and I still hear from folks I know.

And if you honestly ASK them "Can we achieve what we expect....they will say NO"

Unless you and your types want another " Wall" for this war; get used to this fact. They don't want us there and they don't want the present government.

BTW I don't like MoveOn.Org anyway.
It's a shame that most Republicans think that our soldiers are an arm of their party. It does a dis-service to what this county is about.  I can guarrantee two things: 1. Should any soldier speak out against the war after having served, the right wing attack machine will be all over them,  (in fact I saw this on FOX last week).  2.  Every vocal Republican that supports this war, most likely is cowering in a corner of their house afraid of the Al-Qaeda boogie man , not giving a second of though about serving their country and truly supporting this war. The extreme volume of support from the Right stems from their guilt of really not supporting this war with "their" lives. So, if you support this war and haven't served, shut up and go enlist, so that we can relieve these boy and girls from their 3rd and 4th tour. That's the support they need from you, not a post to a forum on MSNBC.
Hey Jerry, your a good fighter in your safe hideout,
how about taking your war monger friends Bush,Cheney, the Republican congress and get between those guys who have been killing each other for 1500 years in the name of religion and send our American service men and women home where they will be loved and respected! and safe........
You libs hate the armed forces so much it makes me sick to even think about it.  Clinton proved that when he ran the military into the ground in the 90's.  You libs can talk all you want to about how much we need the troops home.  The fight is way far from over.  In fact, I shudder to think you people today would have negotiated with Japan and Germany after a year of fighting in WW2.  But that is why our father's and mothers sacrificed so you idiots on the left can scram at the top of the mountain about giving up and taking your ball and going home.  Our parents handled it differently.  That's why they are called "the greatest generation", while we are called 'the dumbest generation".
I WONDER WHY?  Why? you silly lib you're mis-informed that's why.  You live in a fantasy world that's why.  I wonder why you don't wake up?
Jerry,

I don't think you actually read any of the comments responding to you.  Otherwise you would have to be knowingly calling two members of the armed services and a father (I assume that Gary is the father of the two people he mentioned from the tone) of two combat vets anti-millitary.  Then again, you're a neo-con desperately trying to cling to an illusion, so I won't put it past you.

At the end of the Jerry, you can rail about the cuts in the military under Clinton if you like.  But it was George W that deployed hundreds of thousands of our men and women oversees on the basis of information that a third grader could have told you was false, then redployed them without allowing the regulation home stay lengths, failed to adequately equipment them with body armor in the field, cut their medical benefits, allowed Walter Reed to fall into disrepair, and generally treats the average foot soldier like a day laborer.

And you have the unmitagated nerve to say that the liberals hate the military?!
Joe in Houston:

They still have the American flag in Houston?......
back in May, I saw so many Mexican Flags walking down the streets of Houston, I thought Santa Ana was back to get his revenge for San jacinto....

Watching this shameful and stupid parade on TV today of liberals who called Petraus a Liar before he even gave them the report shows just what a bunch of cowards and yellow dogs the democratic party has become.  My guy was on there, he is a democrat and he was VERRRRRY careful about what he was saying.  he knows the republicans are taking over south Texas and he knows which side of the bread his butter is on.  This is the ultimate military town and anybody gets caught dissing our troops here might as well move to San Francisco or some other yellow dog town, we don't want you here and we damn sure don't need you here!
Talk all you want, we are not leaving Iraq anytime soon, we will be using Iraq for a staging point for a invasion of Iran if neccessary. Nothing will happen to America while GW is President the terrorist are waiting for a week Democrat to come to office but that will not happen in 2009 because Fred Thompson will be our next President God Bless America and God Bless Fred Thompson...
It seems to me MoveOn must be getting funds from Al Qaeda and their supporters, their rhetoric is the same and their goals are the same apparently, like all anarchists they prefer to damage reputations and attack the democracy that gives them the freedom to spout their vile poison.
Critical thinking is also beyond the grasp of MOVEON [Remarks,MOVEON president:''We paid for this party[Democrats],we bought it,and now we are going to keep it''].They have accused Americas top combat general of ''betraying''his nation. This is patent BS,to coin a phrase. Rather,it is MOVEON and their leftist henchmen palling around with Syrian thugs,HEZBOLLAH ''freedom fighters'',and AL AQSAS killers who have done the most to betray the very ideal of the ''support''of our nations soldiers.
Todays POLITICO [a liberal-centrist political publication and news service of All Things Washington]. ''On condition of anonymity, one [Democrat] senator stated that ''we cant go on televsion and call Petreaus a liar. We will depend on outside groups to do this for us''.
Yet the ''outside''groups were on the inside. Right where the Democrats wanted them. Unfortunately, the thing blew up in their faces when the CODE PINKERS refused to keep their big mouths shut[which all visitors are required to do while in session], and rely solely upon the silent messages from the many signs they bore. Going ape on national television, with America seeing the two sides of the Iraq War,one a composed, lean combat general and the other, screaming biddies wearing a most atrocious colour,Skelton [D-Mo] yelled for order and had the Capitol police begin the herd the Pinkers off stage left.
This has gotton out of hand. Turning 180 degrees from their 2006 ''Bush must listen to his generals''to 2007s ''Petraeus betrayed his country''.Democrats are increasingly [and correctly]being seen as being held in thrall to their parties leftwing whose wheels have totally come off their wagon. Critics forget that Petreaus was confirmed on an 85-0 vote with ALL Democrats voting in favour.
There is not a scintilla of evidence[like in McCarthys day with the alleged ''communists''] that Petraeus serves as a presidential ''mouthpiece''or is a ''stooge''of the Bush administration. Democrats lie down for their MOVEON masters, who say the general is such an individual.MOVEON said it,ergo,it must be so. The more bovine in the audience who believe that this is a war For And By Halliburton will be reminded that:

A. George Soros owns over two million shares of Halliburton.

B.Soros makes over two million dollars per month on Halliburton dividends[DOW Industrial Averages,Feb.-Sept.2007]

C.Soros is the chief financial contributor to MOVEON

D.MOVEON is being funded by HALLIBURTON monies.

Line of Those Who Have Betrayed This Nation forms on the Left.Beginning with Soros and MOVEON.
For what it's worth, considering NBC is so liberally biased, I had 3 brothers serve in WWII - God protected our County when our service men and women gave their lives for it and fought that horrific war.  It's such a pity that we don't have a DRAFT today so that some of these demonstrators could be off our street, serving a just cause and grow up to be MEN and WOMEN we would be proud of.  Seems they're too soft and spoiled to amount to much.  Thank God for the MEN and WOMEN serving our Country today.
For a man with an Ph.D from Princeton, GEN Betrayus sure looks more and more like Jerry's stupid crowd.

Yes, if someone doesn't agree with Move.org's position, then they are stupid.

Keep it up lefties.  Keep it up.  You're about to get your nose rubbed in it.
So Jerry is the reason I keep seeing this quote being posted. "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" I was trying to figure why anyone would post such a statement, now I see!
The General is only doing his job following orders to do less would be disobeying a lawful order. It's the American people who need to wake up and support efforts to end this war . We are in a situation that there is no victory ever possible for America. Let leave with the little dignity we still have and embolden the Iragi people to take charge of their future. Get rid of the hand pick Government that we installed and start from square one. This is a simple solution to a complex situation at this point in time it's up to the people to fix this mess.

We are the dumbest generation because we let our leaders talk us into becoming extremely afraid of a threat that wasn't 1% as great as Germany and Japan was in WW11. I was a Republican all my life until they stopped following the conservative philosophy.  I was not in WW11 but I do remember it and no one was afraid of the threat to this nation, they just rolled up their sleeves and went to work to erradicate it. Today we were convinced to become very afraid of a handful of criminals that presented no more threat to this nation than Cuba.  I voted for a republican president in every election starting in 1960 and had to stop in 2004 because of disgust with what happened.  There is no one representing conservatives anymore.
Betrayus  THE LAST GENERAL STANDADING.
We are not at war with Iraq, but with Islamic Terriorist, who hate the United States as much as liberal democrats hate Bush.  Iraq is simply the battlefield.  So, if not Iraq, where?  Perhaps you would prefer Los Angeles, New York, ...
I can see that Fox news has done a great job of brainwashing at least two people here.  Hats off to the rest of you who think for yourselves.  My friends serving in Iraq (all Democrats) would thank you.  They joined the military out of patriotism inspired by the love of a country based on the ideas of democracy, separation of church and state, and free thought and expression, all liberal ideas.
Speaking of running the US military into the ground, would any diehard Bush loyalists like to comment on the effect on America's strategic position now that its reputation has been soiled for the past seven years, especially after we launched an aggressive military action, an unprovoked war, in '03?
Jerry in Corpus-
I'm guessing that you are posting here just for laughs and that your can't possibly intend for your comments, or you for that matter, to be taken seriously. Your last post "You libs hate the armed forces", is as uninformed and out of touch as shrub's war strategy. If you would actually take the time to read what people have said, you realize that many of the folks that disagree with you are war veterans and people who have worn a uniform and defended our country. Your comments just emphasize how completely out of touch with reality you are. Maybe a hitch in Iraq would bring you back to reality....
you can put lipstick on a pig ...IT'S STILL A PIG!
Jerry I have said it hundreds of times, you don't know what you are talking about when you say Clinton ran the military into the ground.  How many times do you have to hear this you moron?
I am a Democrat and proud of it. I am also retired from the military and am proud of my 21 years of honorable service. I was saddened by the remarks of MoveOn.org because nobody that wears the uniform of the U.S. should be verbally humiliated by anyone, however, after being in the military for over twenty years, I would like to say that you tend to say what your superiors want you to or else. No four star general is going to destroy his career by sidestepping his superiors. The Republicans are trying to get every ounce of political momemtum out of this. Have any of the Republican presidential Candidates ever spent any time in the military? This war has torn this country apart. It infuriates me when I hear people like Sean Hannity trying to act like a no it all on this war and he actually knows nothing about war. All he is trying to do is gain political points for his party. Seems funny to me that there is such an outrage by the Republicans to everything being said about Gen. Petraius, but never did I hear there outrage over comments by Republicans that denegrated the Military record of John Kerry. As I have said before, no one that puts their life on the line for this country should ever be humiliated, especially by people that have never spent a minute in the military, Republican or Democrat.
Republicans,
Why don't you learn this is not a war by the Republicans but by Bush-Chaney who happen to be Repulicans. It is their policy which is failing and not the uniform soldiers. They won the war (militarily) and transferred the power to greedy Iraqi politicians who are the friends of Oil Thirsty Bush-Cheney. The Republicans should not accept any more deaths of American Uniform heroes. Neither should Democrats.

doc1obg.
I've read all of the comments on this page and it scares me to think that our country is this divided. I think we are all falling victims to a political game to try and divide us. I am a military member. I've done the tours in Iraq. I know what it's like. Regardless of whether we want troops in or out of Iraq, we all want what we feel is best for our troops and most of all, our country. Democrats and Republicans aren't that different. Sometimes, we (and more improtantly the Congressmen) should recognize things that we have in common instead of focusing so intensely on our differences. Maybe then we can start creating cohesion as opposed to division! I personally believe that the war has been mismanaged. I think that Bush's idea for a democratic Iraq was irrational and failed years ago. I don't think we can or should define the political structure of that country. I've met a few General's in my life, and I can assure everyone that our military leaders are not lackeys of anyone. They know what they're doing when it comes to military affairs. I think the problem is that the Iraq situation is not a war or military affair. They're in a sense asking a General about a political problem. That's not his area of expertise. I believe that the military aspect of the war in Iraq is over, and we should pull out as soon as possible; but, being in the military I understand that a complete pullout would be detrimental to the security of the country. We've put ourselves in an impossible position.  To be completely honest I have come to the conclusion that there is nothing our military can do to help the situation; so, we should begin a complete withdrawal. No one will be able to take over that country in our absence...We couldn't even do it. We should provide them economical support and in time, their country will strengthen.
Wow the liberals and the far left in this country have officially gone off the deep end. They have no reason or common sense to any of their claims or statements.  It is crazy to believe that liberals say this garbage and never get questioned by anyone in the mainstream media. Whats more unbelieveable is that they actually beleive what they say with some conviction which is hard to believe cuz no democratic liberal usually speaks with conviction.  Liberalism is a mind disease... i wish there was a cure.

Just for startes I have 4 friends in Iraq right now serving 2nd and 3rd terms because they beleive in WINNING this fight and continuing on thru to ultimate victory   ...Petreaus has forgotten more about war than any liberal ever knew....
----AMERICA NEVER LOSES-----
R.I.P. 9/11 Victims. Never Forget   "even tho must libs have"

Take note!  The Democrat candidates all commented on the strategy, scope and reality of the situation in Iraq while the Republican candidates were stuck on criticizing the exercise of free speech by a national political organization and had no comments on the war itself.
Jerry you are a dispicable character...nothing you say can change that for sure.
The Move On Ad will mark a turning point in the debate over Iraq. By joining Harry Reid in trying to smear General Petraeus the radicals at Move On just shot themselves in the foot. It was only a matter of time before these fools imploded. The surrender movement has failed. The Democracts will spend much of their time in 08 trying , but failing, to distance themselves from it. After they are defeated then we can start the hard work of rebuilding a once great political party.
I travel almost every week somewhere in the USA and occasionally Europe. When I am in the airports I talk to men and women in Uniform and their stories all match what the General is reporting. It is sad that 45% of the country in not informed but give opinions, but they are the loudest and have the media attention. They are reports from some of his people. Move on . org is a socialist organization that could easily turn communist. The trucks blown up on the Mexican border appears to be Teamster (liberal organization)driven, I hope that investigation by Mexico reveal the truth.
