'08 candidates on Petraeus, MoveOn

From NBC's Mark Murray
Since the hearing on Gen. Petraeus' report began this afternoon, some of the Democratic presidential candidates have issued statements arguing that the so-called surge has failed. By comparison, the GOP candidates (with the exception of Giuliani) have released statements that criticize MoveOn's full-page ad in the New York Times -- but that don't explicitly touch on Petraeus' testimony.

See below for a sampling of the comments...

THE DEMOCRATS.
Obama: "Changing the definition of success to stay the course with the wrong policy is the wrong course for our troops and our national security. The time to end the surge and to start bringing our troops home is now - not six months from now. The Iraqi government is not achieving the political progress that was the stated purpose of the surge, and in key areas has gone backwards. Our military cannot sustain its current deployments without crippling our ability to respond to contingencies around the world. It's time for a change of direction that brings our troops home, applies real pressure on the Iraqis to act, surges our diplomacy, and addresses Iraq's urgent humanitarian crisis."

Richardson: "I am saddened, but not surprised, by the recommendations of General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker on Iraq. I do not question the integrity or competence of these gentlemen, but the strategy George Bush and Dick Cheney have asked them to execute has failed. The course General Petraeus has recommended we take-- more of the same-- is unacceptable, irresponsible, and dangerous.

A Dodd spokeswoman: "The fact that there are questions about General Petraeus' report is not surprising given that it was brought to you by this White House. In contrast, independent report after report indicates that the whack-a-mole strategy has made this the bloodiest summer of the war. And by the General's admission, the so-called surge has not achieved its goal of political progress. But even more fundamentally, debating the merits of a tactic when the strategy that underlies it is failed is nothing more than a distraction from the work that needs to be done to bring this war to a close."

THE REPUBLICANS.
McCain: "In today's New York Times, the anti-war group MoveOn.org launched a McCarthyite attack on an American patriot and our commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus. This is a man who has devoted his life in service to our nation and has defended America in many battles over many years. Now he is the target of a despicable attack in one our nation's most visible newspapers. No matter where you stand on the war, we should all agree on the character and decency of this exceptional American. I would hope that the Democratic Congressional leadership and Democratic presidential candidates would also join me in publicly condemning this kind of political attack ad and the organization responsible for it in the strongest terms possible."

Romney: "As many have noted this morning, MoveOn.org's latest outrageous act is an attempt to call into question the reputation and character of General Petraeus even before he testifies in front of Congress. As the Brookings Institution's Michael O'Hanlon writes today, "General Petraeus is a straight shooter." Like the men he commands, he is risking his life to protect our freedoms here at home. We should not prejudge him or his testimony, or give him anything less than the full respect he deserves."

Thompson: "MoveOn.org has today, in effect, said that the General leading our brave troops in Iraq is betraying his country. This is the group that funds the Democratic Party. I call upon the Democratic Party and all of the Democratic candidates for President to repudiate the libel of this patriotic American."

GIULIANI.
“Today, General Petraeus provided the first look at a strategy that is getting results and an Iraq that is making progress. This is only the beginning, which is why we need to continue to listen to the assessment of General Petraeus and others on the ground so we can decide the best course of action going forward."

Giuliani continued, “The Democrats and MoveOn.org are doing a disservice to Iraq’s long-term future by jumping to political conclusions in advance of the General’s report.  These times call for statesmen, not political rhetoric.”

Stay with it jerry.  Upon my first post, let me introduce you to the word draftee.  As soon as we've got all those people back and we get our asses kicked a little more, on our property, we'll initiate the draft again.  That method eliminates the friends and relatives of the wealthy from having to serve which eliminates much of the media opposition to our people being over there.  As for the spitting.  I was there, and could care less whether anyone believes it or not, but I pray that every body bag that comes back from Iraq is claimed by one of those bitches that spat and threw dog shit on us at the Oakland air port.  If you think it won't scar you a little to have the first American girl you've seen in 12 months spit on you...try it sometime.
Jerry...I am a liberal and there is one thing I would like to say to you. HOW DARE YOU PRESUME THAT WE DO NOT LOVE OUR TROOPS. These brave men and women have nothing but my love and respect for doing the job they have been given(by lies from this administration, no less). The troops are doing the best they can and are losing their lives because of it, but when will it end? If our so called president had his way I think they would never be able to leave. I worry and pray for our troops everyday, so DO NOT say things about us not supporting our troops when we all know it is not true.
Why do these conserative folks like war? I realized that the poeple that make the loudest noise have not even seen a battle field let a lone hold a riffle.

All they do is shout their talking point. I guess i don't blame them 'cos war and drum beat of war is in their blood.

Today 9/11 and you can really see how unpatriotic,
Un-American the liberal extremists really are. Scares me away from the democratic party.
Everyday when I turn on the T.V, radio, or read a newspaper I find that Christianity is mocked and ridiculed. In many of the T.V shows you will see completely tasteless insults constantly aimed at the Christian Faith. We are force fed a system of Political Correctness that will not tolerate even a hint of a joke aimed at any other religion, race, sexual preference. However Christianity doesn't have that shield of protection that every other faith has. It seems the ACLU can take a comment that may be slightly irreverant towards their protected groups and turn it into multi-million dollar lawsuits. When Christian's are offended, discriminated against, or victimized. No one comes running out to help ensure that justice and equality will prevail and make hate crimes bills to protect them. The Taliban executes Christian converts. Many other places around the globe like Sudan have Arab militias that wipe out entire villages of Christians. To hear the ACLU insist we take down mangers at city hall, claim to be offended by someone saying Merry Christmas, Forcing the Ten Commandments out of our courts, then, the latest, is a lawsuit against our Military, that is Fighting to protect us from Terrorists, Al Qaida, Communism.

Good Wages to workers is Very Important in Michigan. Immigrants pose a threat to wages and our culture. Wages could increase if the government would tighten up on border security and slow the flow of foreign workers. And our nation would be more secure if we were more selective about who comes into our country. When the democrats ease up the pressure on Al Qaida by surrendering in Iraq, they will be able to regroup and follow our retreating troops back home to the U.S.A. Before this happens we have to make sure that they have not infiltered government jobs such as food inspectors, water supply, border security, policy makers even. We are going to be crushed (wages too) if we open the gates and allow unrestricted travel and immigration. Without having a clue into who is coming and going and getting lawsuits everytime we need to take a second look at someone who might have some ties to Al Qaida.

Betrayus  THE LAST GENERAL STANDADING.

<Blink>

Who is "Betrayus"?

And is he "standing" or "dading"?

You really need to be clearer in your thoughts, or lack there of.
Well maybe we shoudn't concentrate on the General. He is just doing whatever it takes to keep his job. We should concentrate on George the Bloodthirsty.
Jerry try to come into the 21st century.
Why would a 4 star General lie to the public regarless of party in office.  If anybody knows what's working and what isn't it's him.  I guess actual statistics showing a decrease in violence isn't enough.

As for MoooveOne.org - despicable!
E Stephens, Detroit, MI.  The Fox news brainwashing rant is soooo tired.  99% of liberals who use this as a talking point never even watch the show.  The 1% that do can't beleive that Fox has 2 different points of view on each topic.  One Conservative one Liberal, one Republican one Democrat, Hannity & Combs etc, etc.  The issue is liberals are not used to having a different point of view on mainstream media they confuse this with biased reporting.  Non of my Liberal friends watch Fox News but they all seem to think that it's all right wing politics which if you watch you would know it isn't.  To the Liberals please don't lie and say you watch Fox News save yourself the drama because I will challenge you and you will of course waste everyone's time with "Oh I don't remember or I only watched it once etc ect.  I've heard it all.  Personally I don't care if you watch Fox News or not but you might want to think about using a talking point you can't back up.
I've been away from this site for a while but I was curious to come back after the General delivered his assessment.  It doesn't surprise me that the Liberals are still against the war (on terror the battlefield is in Iraq).  Do you Liberals really believe that the American people want defeat?  You guys and the Democratic party dug yourself into this whole, and I'm not sure you're going to be able to dig yourselves out.  With that I say those that stick to this foolish rhetoric of ignorance that is actually aligned with what our enemy is saying (just watch Bin Laden's new terroist video it's loaded with the Democrat's talking points) I say good riddance, and to those that have decided to come back to their senses and found that they really do believe in our country, our men and women in uniform, our way of life, I say welcome back from the Looney bin we missed you.
Repub be quiet...I watched Fox for 2 years and then I quit b/c of the bias. It's not hard to interpret, but what is unacceptable to others is probably fine to you. Just as many dislike MSNBC and CNN. So save the pretentious attitude for people who'd actually listen to your ridiculous comments.
CJ Repub be quiet...I watched Fox for 2 years and then I quit b/c of the bias.

You obviously struggle with hearing other opinions that don't agree with your own.  I'd say to get help, but you are probably beyond that point.
I am an independent who normally votes for the candidate that I think is best suited for the job, organizations like move-on are not a feather in the dems hat, although anyone that thinks move-on somehow represents all the dem candidates if being foolish, I will be voting for the dem candidate for president as long as it is not mrs. clinton who is as much a republican as rudy, and all the dem representatives that run in my state, this country can not take another 4 years of repubs in control or mrs. Bush lite, we need to show the rest of the world we are not a bunch of crazed fascist hell bent on world domination, and we need to make this country a good place to work and live for more than the top third of it's population, an idea that makes most repubs cringe in disgust, we need the kind of change john edwards can bring, and contrary to what the corporate media pounds the airwaves daily with, edwards is the only dem that can win the general election
CJ "I watched Fox for 2 years" that's great but I happen to believe in what Repub said I've experienced similar instances with my Liberal friends.  I'd be curious to hear what is baised about Fox News (I also watch MSNBC, CBS, ABC, & CNN) you have two years of FOX viewing experience enlighten me.  Please don't waste everyone's time though I'm asking for facts that you can use from FOX News to show the bias...you have 2 years viewing experience if what you say is true it shouldn't be that hard.
Jason Rollins <I've read all of the comments on this page and it scares me to think that our country is this divided.>

Don't fret Jason, it isn't.  There is a very small but noisey and well funded set of people that are making it look like the country is divided.  These left wing wackos are being exposed for what they are though, a group of extreme left wingers out of the main stream of the country. The main stream of this country will not tolerate their actions.
Swift-boaters beware.
Move On is stealing your thunder!!
BETRAYUS = THE LAST GENERAL STANDING!!

ALL CLEAR.
Joe Becton TEXAS  Most likely blown up by drug dealers.
Mexico is a corrupt drug driven country.  Much like ours.
Move On is stealing your thunder!!

Nope.  They just have a lot of gas escaping out their back side.
CJ, Be quiet? That's all you got?  You watched it for 2 years? Well tell me how it's biased then.  Can you even do that?  I seriously doubt you can, you're just proving my point.  I didn't say anything about MSNBC OR CNN because I don't watch them so I won't pretend to know if they are filled with bias.  CJ it's you that should be quietuiet
Jerry, I lived in Corpus Christi and still have family there, be seeing you soon. I've never dissed our troops nor Gen. Patraus, just you. When I get there, I'll introduce you to a recruiter I know down there. As an American and Texan, I am not afraid of Al Queda, Iran, or republicans hell bent on revenge because I disagreed with their stupidity.

Why complain about what Moveon does? Why complain about any of the irrational thoughts put forth not only by them but by the 9/11 "truth" movement, or Michael Moore?

Don't you all realize that every time something like this happens someone from the GOP gets at least a cities worth of votes?

Besides I already know for sure the surge is working:

I'm definitely going to side with the General on this one, that's for sure.
The more that i read this the more i am sickened, by all of you. I am a Republican and proud of it, but i acknowledge that there are other opinions out their besides mine and I try to keep my arguments civil and reasonable. This cowardly attack on a brave American soldier is despicable and is no way civil or reasonable. Moveon should be ashamed. If they wish to take an add against the President or certain politicians that would be understandable, but attacking the men who are overseas because they have a sense of duty to this nation, the chain of command, or just because they believe in what they are doing is immoral. General Petraeus deserves this nation's thanks and gratitude, not its scorn and hateful words. I accept your opinion on the war, even though i think it is wrong, but I no longer respect it or yourself when you attack the noblest and bravest members or society.
All of you who think we will win in Iraq are fooling yourselves.  There is no winning in Iraq.  Just look at the 50 years of turmoil in Gaza, the West Bank and Israel.  Add Lebanon, Boznia, and any other wasted nation you want to the list of countries that have cost us American lives and hundreds of Billions of dollars. Bush is a disgrace.  I happen to agree with MoveOn.org.  I also saw Donald Trump on Wolf Blitzer's show say "George Bush is the worst President in our history".  I agree with Donald Trump.  Bush is a disgrace.  Bush should resign.  If the Democrats had the votes, Bush would be impeached.  Bush will be the most despised President in the last 60 years.
