Paul speaks on foreign affairs

From NBC’s Andrew Merten
GOP presidential hopeful Ron Paul touted his non-interventionist prescription for US foreign policy at Johns Hopkins’ School of Advanced International Studies in DC. There, he reiterated his opposition to the Iraq war -- which often makes him sound more like a Democrat than one of his GOP rivals.

Paul distinguished his policy of non-intervention from isolationism, explaining that he still sees a benefit in doing business with foreign countries -- provided currency manipulation does not create an unfair relationship. He added, “Non-intervention is better than assuming this moral superiority.” He went on to talk about today's anniversary. “We don’t understand 9/11,” he said, adding that he believes American intervention in the Middle East over the past 50 years was a “major participant” in fueling the attacks of six years ago.

Also, the Texas congressman downplayed the threat of Iran, saying that current concern is “way overblown,” because Tehran does not have the delivery technology to threaten America and that “Israel is quite capable of taking care of themselves,” given their own nuclear arsenal. But Paul did not delve into the possibility of a nuclear hand-off between Iran and terrorist groups.

Although Paul’s strong internet following has not translated into stellar fundraising numbers for his campaign (although he did have more cash on hand than McCain at the end of June) or a more impressive showing at the Ames straw poll, the auditorium was packed with audience members, with some even standing in the aisles. But he was not able to meet and greet his supporters after his discussion, as he had to catch a plane to California, where he will be campaigning tomorrow.

Ron Paul is right on the Iraq war, but he is no Democrat.  He is more conservative across the board than any of the Republican front-runners.

Ron Paul has done fine in fundraising, but hold off on any judgment until the third quarter numbers come out.  He did fine in the Iowa straw poll, too, turning 2% poll numbers to a 9% showing in one week of campaigning.

Ron Paul has won or placed highly in numerous other less-noticed straw polls around the country.  He has won polls in New Hampshire, Alabama, and Maryland with hundreds of grassroots Republican activists.

Ron Paul has also been drawing large crowds wherever he speaks, and has over 40,000 volunteers signed up in local Meetup groups nationwide.  As his national name recognition rises, his poll numbers will too.

Ron Paul has the most upside of any candidate in the race.
It is sad that a foreign policy of nonintervention would make someone sound like a democrat when that is the traditional republican stance and also was one of George W Bush's campaign promises during the 2000 election.
I'm disappointed by this piece as it offers relatively little insight into Ron Paul, his positions, and most importantly, the contents of his speech.  I noticed that ABC news has an excellent piece on this event that actually provides quotes from Dr. Paul instead of these paraphrases, which I find, cloud the issues.

I would hope that an expanded piece be presented, given that this one does so little to expound upon the talk which I argue is a noteworthy appearance regarding the election and foreign policy.
“We don’t understand 9/11,” he said, adding that he believes American intervention in the Middle East over the past 50 years was a “major participant” in fueling the attacks of six years ago.

Thank you, Ron Paul !!
You're the ONLY ONE with the courage to say this !!
They came here because we were over there !!!

Using this analysis, does it seem likely that the Iraq intervention will decrease terrorism or increase it ??
Connect the dots ......

Also, the Texas congressman downplayed the threat of Iran, saying that current concern is “way overblown,” because Tehran does not have the delivery technology to threaten America and that “Israel is quite capable of taking care of themselves,” given their own nuclear arsenal

BINGO !!!
Compare this to John McCain:

Bomb, bomb, bomb
Bomb, bomb Iran

That's pretty statesmanlike, isn't it ??

Iran poses NO THREATTO US !!
There is NO JUSTIFICATION TO ATTACK IRAN !!

The only honest voice on foreign policy is Ron Paul !!
He has done well in fundraising considering he doesn't take corporate, special interest, or 'bundler' money, only personal individual contributions.

He also left the room to a standing ovation.

You mention the Iowa straw poll, 4th place wasn't bad for a week's worth of campaigning, and Paul and Huckabee were the only candidates to get more votes than the # of tickets they purchased.  Huckabee had the Fair Tax Organization to help him.  Dr Paul just had us.

ABC is better then you.
Paul's fundraising has surpassed expectations, and ignoring other straw poll victories or top 3 finishes belies the true support that is out there, as evidenced by the large crowd.  I do not understand however how 'Democrats' have a monopoly on being anti-war and non-interventionist; and Democrats may claim they want the US gov't and army out of Iraq, but then they want the US gov't to take over healthcare.  I do not understand how after clearly screwing up one thing they expect another to go well.

A man with Ron Paul's depth of knowledge and empathy for the views of other nations doesn't stand a chance of getting the Republican nomination.

Ron....better start ranting about gay marriage, abortion and the need for neverending war or your fellow Republicans are going to call you a wuss.
Turn the other cheek = Far Left (including Jesus)
Attack only if attacked = Main Stream
Attack even if not attacked = Far Right

Unfortunately, you have to appeal to the Far Right to win the Republican nomination. Sorry Paul fans.
IS THIS CHINESE CENSORSHIP? APPROVE THIS.. COMMIES,I THINK RON PAUL IS THE RIGHT MAN FOR THE JOB ,BUT I DISAGREE WITH HIM REGARDING 911 .I PERSONALLY THINK IT WAS INSIDE JOB..9 SECOND S COLLAPSE STRUCTRUAL STEEL BUILDINGS,WTC 7 FELL IN 7 SECONDS IT WASNT EVEN HIT BUY A PLANE,,LARRY PULL IT SILVERSTEIN SAID HE PULLED IT... NO AIRPLANE FOOTAGE AT THE PENTAGON? NO BODIES IN PENNSLYVANIA NO PLANE DEBRIS.. NEVER FORGET THE FIRST RESPODERS,FDNY,AND THE VICTIMS. HOPEFULLY THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WILL WAKE UP TO THE NEW WORLD ORDER AND DAMAGING AFFECTS ON THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD..USA#1,JERRY F.L.
Please, no more Iraq...

Ron Paul is the man to do it!

Ron Paul 2008.  Don't think about it, just make it happen.
He did spend some time meeting and greeting the audience who wished to meet him. Many people took pictures with him and he answered every autograph request. I am grateful to SAIS for opening the event to the public - so that people like myself could attend.

He is a true gentleman.
Sorry, when I see Giuliani and the others, all I see is different mixtures of FDR & LBJ.   Paul is the only conservative left in the Republican party, a combination of the best of T. Jefferson, B. Goldwater and R. Reagan.   Don't underestimate the intelligence of Republican voters.   They will see through the neocon haze eventually.
Thank you for covering this MSNBC.

To the American people - here you go. You finally have a choice - a Doctor, not a Lawyer. A Statesman, not a Politician. Someone with real integrity, and a vision for America based upon the foundation of this Great Country. Why would you consider anyone else??
And this is exactly why his stupid azz will never be the POTUS.
Interesting article if it had a bit more content.  ABC surprisingly did a much better job of covering this event and I was able to understand alot more about Ron Paul's thoughts and ideas reading that one.

To get a better understanding of terrorism and why it exists I suggest reading The Logic of Suicide Terrorism by Professor Robert Pape.  Very enlightening.  In lieu of reading the book you can peruse a relatively short interview on his research here:

http://www.amconmag.com/2005_07_18/article.html
A standing ovation from an "interventionist" institute is saying allot for Ron Paul.
I do wonder how Rudy or Mitt would have faired.
Go Ron Paul
"Although Paul’s strong internet following has not translated into stellar fundraising numbers for his campaign"

"(although he did have more cash on hand than McCain at the end of June)"

These two statements are blatantly contradictory. How many candidates was Paul behind in terms of cash on hand and how many were ahead of him? His fundraising has been great!
I wish paul would get nominated, that way if the dems nominate hillary I will have someone to vote for
Ron Paul is attracting many voters to the Republican party, such as myself, who feel like we've been driven out of the party by the Neoconservatives, as well as the majority of Americans who are unhappy with both parties. The GOP will have no chance in '08 if they nominate a pro-war candidate and they need to wake up to this fact NOW or get ready to "Heil Hillary!"
Ron Paul is going to overcome the long odds and be the next President of the United States. Every fact he puts out turns out to be true when you research it. You won't see him returning money from a disgraced fundraiser like Hillary Clinton.

His character and his principled stands are without equal. He has been against this Iraq occupation since before it started.

Help save America and vote for Ron Paul in 2008

Yep, your article lacked depth.  Wuit being so shallow and cut corners.
The irresponsibility of the MSM is amazing.  Why is Dr. Paul the only candidate talking about the national debt?  We are almost $9 TRILLION in debt to foreign bankers and communist countries.  We are paying $243 billion in interest this year alone.  We cannot afford our own country.  Why do our children and grandchildren have to pay for our mistakes?  Bring our troops home now...that is what we voted for in 2006.  Please consider Dr. Paul there is no one else willing to make the tough decisions.
Dr. Paul has the best prescription for our country. Hopefully, he can “shock and awe” the GOP and take the nomination by gathering enough votes from the paleo-conservative, closed borders, gun rights, limited government, just-plain-sick-of-the-war republicans and new converts (libertarians, constitutionalists and disappointed democrats).
So, you are all saying, as is Dr Paul, that it's our fault that we got attacked?

The guy is a nut, like the rest of the nutroots.
Kurt- did you seriously say "Don't underestimate the intelligence of Republican voters"? You people and your party have run this country into the ground by continuously supporting Bush. I think we all know that you guys can kiss this general election good bye. Doesn't matter who you run
Ron Paul is correct that we need to dial back world-wide. Especially in the Middle East. There is no there there, only oil. They can't drink or eat it only sell it. They have created no advanced technology nor the means to do so. So why do we bother?
My problem with Ron Paul is his statements on Social Security, Medicare, and a number of other domestic issues. His policy of eliminating them is a non-starter and eliminates him as a serious canidate.
Thank you for covering this, MSNBC!
One reason I support Ron Paul is that he is not a member of the CFR (the Council on Foreign Relations).  Since 1921, the CFR has sought to undermine our sovereignty and has succeeded. Thanks to its efforts, the CFR steered us into the U.N., the WTO, GATT, NAFDA, and the likely North American Union.  At the moment, the dollar is weak, Mexican trucks are rolling into the heartland and our borders remain wide open.  Paul opposes all of this.

Here are some CFR Members:
The Candidates: Romney, Giuliani, Fred Thompson, McCain, Clinton, Edwards, Obama and Joe Biden.
Others:  General Petraeus, Diane Sawyer, Mike Wallace, Chris Wallace, Dick Cheney, George Bush I,II, David Rockefeller, Brit Hume, Tom Brokaw, and 1000 more.

It is an elitist "old boys'" club that represents a significant threat to our sovereignty, though of course they do not admit it.  The CFR's PR would have you believe they are a cultural and educational institution.  If you believe that, then you proably believe the Corleone family just sells olive oil.
"Paul did not delve into the possibility of a nuclear hand-off between Iran and terrorist groups."

And the DOT/FMCSA does not "delve" into the possibility of a nuclear bomb in the trailer of a Mexican semi - their only "safety" concern is that these trucks have a freakin' sticker showing that they passed a mechanical inspection.

How about a "nuclear handoff" between Pakistan (or former Soviet states) and terrorists?

After paring down our military budget by about 80 per-cent, Ron Paul would have plenty of resources to put the highest priority on protecting AMERICA'S borders from any possible terrorist incursion.
Left, Right, it's all baloney. I vote on the man not the contrived polarized party nonsense. All other Republican candidates are immature and full of themselves. Not one can hold a candle to Dr. Ron Paul's intellect, voting record and integrity as a doctor. A 10 term Congressman with the guts and foresight of the founders of this great nation.

The attempt to paint Ron Paul as closer to being a Democrat is laughable. Ron Paul is closer to being a true conservative than the Radical Republicans masquerading as conservatives.
At least you lot wrote some kind of story.  The "official" Establishment newspapers of record, the WaPo and the Grey Lady, wrote nothing.  Then again, we don't need the Establishment court/shill media. They're exposed, and irrelevant.  Ron Paul is reaching the young people of this country, going right through the mainstream media obfuscation and their pandering to the War Party Establishment.
I don't care what politicle party he's from and it shouldn't matter because Ron Paul is the only person who I can actually say care's and is a honest man! he has my vote and my support....
5-6 months ago, I don't think I even knew Dr. Ron Paul existed. Now, I'm convinced he is the best candidate for president, while keeping the majority of American's priorities, rights, and best interests at heart. We've sacrificed enough under these "bought" politicians, the last 40 years. Today,I carrying a picture of my fireman friend who suddenly left 3 very young daughters on 911. I'm keeping it in my security guard shirt pocket enclosed in a copy of Dr. Ron Paul's pocket constitution. When I run into someone who's worthy to see the memorialized picture of my friend (and they usually don't have a magnetic flag on their shiney metal box to prove their patriotism) I take the picture out, tell his story, and put the picture back in the constitution saying, my friend certainly wouldn't have wanted this touched (constitution, bill of rights) at his expense. Ann Coulter still deserves to get the snot smacked out of her for what she said about my friend's wife (daughter of a Manhattan police sgt., and sister to a fireman and police officer.) And every other serviceman's family who suffered a loss that day. How can Sean Hannity have her on his stage tonite? They're not patriots. They're not even nationalists. They're neocon mouthpieces, and they're no better than muslim extremists. This crap has got to stop, and I mean yesterday.
You wrote, "he believes American intervention in the Middle East over the past 50 years was a “major participant” in fueling the attacks of six years ago."

It's not that he BELIEVES it from a hole in the sky. This is what the CIA has told us.  Why can't the "news" do any research anymore. It seems that all our media is good for is taking AP wirenews and copy and pasting it online.

It appears from this article that you don't "BELIEVE" the CIA.  The man who lead the hunt for Bin Laden at the CIA is named, Michael Scheuer. He clearly states that it is our policy in the middle east. For those interested in listening to a Fox News interview, Michael explains the motives behind the attacks on the US. See, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZNfuIvtLos
What democrat favors abolishing the IRS and the income tax (and replacing it with nothing, radically reducing the size of government, protecting the right to life, protecting the second amendment and securing our border with Mexico?  Answer:  NONE

If Democrats sound like they're for a foreign policy like the one Ron Paul advocates, thats only because they're bowing to current opinion polls.  Unlike them, Ron Paul has consistently advocated noninterventionism even when that wasn't popular.  He voted against authorizing the Iraq war, while Mrs. Clinton, John Edwards and nearly every other significant Democrat voted for it.

Make no mistake about it--Ron Paul is not a Democrat.
I am a former Democrat but Ron Paul is the only Presiential Candidate from either party who will be a "For The People,By The People" constitutional President. He will not allow our souvereignty to be threatened by Globalization.

Our country has been run by Big Business for too long and it is time we take our country back !!

GO RON PAUL !!!
For those who think Ron Paul would just get rid of the major government beaurocracies- understand he will not "pull the plug" on anyone or anything. He understands that Americans have become dependant on the Government and he will take them off of it slowly. People will want to get off of welfare and want to "fix" social security.... those things are broke and we need a doctor to fix it.
America has never been more isolated from the world than right now, thanks to the neocons' disastrous adventure in Iraq, our massive debt, and our increasingly shaky currency. Ron Paul may be our best hope to regain the world's respect
When wil you, the "media elite" disengage yourselves from the "monetary" and "political" elite and enforce your CONSTITUTIONAL right to speak/write/verbalize/communicate the FACTS based on TRUTH?

Have you become so fearful of the truth that Ron Paul speaks that you run away like sheep when rustled by the wind?

How sad.  How spineless.  How true.

I may consider this guy.
Vote Ron Paul - because: eliminate income tax (national bondage), reduce federal govt & spending, strong military, stong borders, strong currency, free-market solutions to healthcare and education, volunteerism for social & civil issues, energy independence & alternatives, back to the Constitution, balanced government, right to bear arms, and real freedom!
I vote for the person, not the party,(although generally it's a democrat)
However, this election's dem front runners, with their pandering promises of open borders and amnesty for criminals, shows me that they care nothing for our national security.  They represent more of the same sellout policies we have in office now.
I could and would vote for Paul.
Ron Paul for President, 2008

This may be the only revolution that doesn't require a Gun.
Washington needs a doctor not a politician.
Legalize the constitution, vote Ron Paul.

Think for yourself, question authority

Idiots to Ron Paul: "This is madness, this is blasphemy..."
Ron Paul to Idiots: "This is AMERICAAAA" (and kicks them down the well).
It was $$$$ that ruined the USSR not Terrorism, WMDs, or even the USA. We are going broke fast. Our economy is falling apart for the poor and mid. classes. WAKE UP AMERICA VOTE FOR RON PAUL!!!!!!!!!!
With the current “state of our union”, the relentless war efforts, the domestic surveillance, the immigration issues, and the overall distrust and discontent with our government, a candidate like Ron Paul is the “fresh drink of water” for a nation thirsting for change. His strong views of constitutional adherence, and adherence to the oath of office that our government officials took, I feel will help to insure that our “land of liberty” becomes the more perfect union of individual and indivisible states that our founding fathers worked so tenaciously to form. That is why my vote and support for the next President will be for Ron Paul.
