Paul speaks on foreign affairs

From NBC’s Andrew Merten
GOP presidential hopeful Ron Paul touted his non-interventionist prescription for US foreign policy at Johns Hopkins’ School of Advanced International Studies in DC. There, he reiterated his opposition to the Iraq war -- which often makes him sound more like a Democrat than one of his GOP rivals.

Paul distinguished his policy of non-intervention from isolationism, explaining that he still sees a benefit in doing business with foreign countries -- provided currency manipulation does not create an unfair relationship. He added, “Non-intervention is better than assuming this moral superiority.” He went on to talk about today's anniversary. “We don’t understand 9/11,” he said, adding that he believes American intervention in the Middle East over the past 50 years was a “major participant” in fueling the attacks of six years ago.

Also, the Texas congressman downplayed the threat of Iran, saying that current concern is “way overblown,” because Tehran does not have the delivery technology to threaten America and that “Israel is quite capable of taking care of themselves,” given their own nuclear arsenal. But Paul did not delve into the possibility of a nuclear hand-off between Iran and terrorist groups.

Although Paul’s strong internet following has not translated into stellar fundraising numbers for his campaign (although he did have more cash on hand than McCain at the end of June) or a more impressive showing at the Ames straw poll, the auditorium was packed with audience members, with some even standing in the aisles. But he was not able to meet and greet his supporters after his discussion, as he had to catch a plane to California, where he will be campaigning tomorrow.

Ron Paul.....the granola candidate..the biggest flake in the bowl of fruits, nuts and flakes
I switched party affiliation for the sole purpose of voting for Paul as the GOP nominee. We need this man as our president. Fred Thompson would be just business as usual, and Hillary is a scary proposition.
Ron Paul received the most of all the military donations  and when fox covered that story and they  interviewed some journalistic prostitute to make excuses for why this could of happened.

Ron Paul will make lives better for hundreds of millions of people with his simple vision.....

He's correct about blowback- and any other canidate will lead us into unending war or even world war 3......

Ron Paul can save us all!!!!

Yes I attended this event and I was happy to hear lots of people cheer for Ron Paul.  Ron Paul also was ready for any question thrown at him!!  I am very optimistic about his fundraising!  Please give some $$ if haven't already!!  I consider my donation an investment, because if Paul is elected, the income tax is likley to be abolished!
GO RON PAUL! GO RON PAUL! GOD BLESS RON PAUL!
RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT 2008!
Yeah.  Paul.
Ron Paul is by far the best pres candidate we have seen in many years and most likely will ever see again.  The real question is have enough americans evolved enough to realize it.  I think there are a large number that are taking notice however many are still asleep.
Ron Paul is truly the ONLY HOPE left for America. He offers wise leadership and solutions that we desperately need. There is NO OTHER candidate that comes close to him in terms of morality, integrity, and sound domestic and foreign policy.

God Bless You and Protect You, Ron Paul!
I just sent Ron Paul $100.00

I believe in Liberty

And I want it back

RON PAUL 2008!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is way over do for this country to have a person run for the President of the United States that will free the people! Just listening to Dr. Ron Paul gives me visions of listening to the Founding Fathers. Ron Paul is for the people and the rest are just for the new world order!
I'd like to inject some further infomation about 9/11 into this topic.  For the few people reading all the comments here are a few informative movies concerning 9/11 which I recommend you all watch.

You should also read "Crossing the Rubicon" if you want to be fully informated about 9/11.
Andrew Merten, thank you for your great article about Ron Paul. Most anyone who learns about Ron Paul becomes a supporter of Ron Paul. This is a very important time in American history and we need a leader with the integrity and courage of Ron Paul.

I will be voting for Ron Paul in 20008!

I really like Ron Paul! He is the only one with real courage and gets to the point! He isn't afraid to speak his mind, something every canidate is holding back. Even the Democrats are playing it safe, just like the Republicans. This guy is conservative where it counts and liberal as well, especailly since he is all about uniting everyone in this country. I'm sure he is the only canidate besides Hilary than can get support from both parties. I'm a Democrat, but hearing his views makes more sense to me than any canidate. Here's hoping everyone will folow my lead and not be loyal to their party; afterall that's what screwed everyone in the past 8 years. Go Ron Paul!
It should be noted that Paul authored a bill that DECLARED WAR on Iraq....for constitutionally, it is neccessary for congress to do that rather than allowing a president to rum amok, shooting from his hip.  Needless to say, it was voted/slammed down as none of these so called representatives wanted to be on the hook for anything that may damage their re-election capabilities.
Hi Mark,
Thank you for writing about Ron Paul.

As you saw, he is very different from all of the other candidates because of the fact that he is seriously consistent and right on line with his purpose, which is the application and facilitation of our Constitution.

I am somebody who never cared much for politics because most politicians aren't direct with their solutions or honest in their answers, rather, they are very scattered in their expressed goals and deceptive in their responses.  However, after listening to Ron Paul, the message of Freedom that he advocates would improve the quality of life for every American citizen because he wants to release the "chains of limited civil liberties" that are continuing to bind your family and mine.

Please continue to follow him and the campaign because the people who need your help and my help the most are the people who cannot even ask for it have no one to turn to.

Thank for your dedication to ethical and thorough reporting.  Keep up the good work!

In God We Trust,
Dave Rodriguez
Yack Yack Yack...Ron Paul is a throwback republican and will never be nominated by todays reprehensibles with their focus on gays, abortion and war...lmao
"So, you are all saying, as is Dr Paul, that it's our fault that we got attacked?" - Bruce, NV

If you provoke a killer into murdering you by punching him in the face, guess what, of course it's his fault for killing you, BUT YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE PUNCHED HIM IN THE FACE, AND YOU SHOULD CONSIDER NOT DOING THE SAME THING IN THE SAME SITUATION NEXT TIME.

After 9/11 we had sympathy from the world and a chance to improve relations. All our actions since have destroyed that trust, witness Russia developing and testing new weapons to balance our agression.I agree 100% with Dr. Pauls foreign policy.
While it's true that this article was short and shallow, I still appreciate that you ran it at all.  Most of the mainstream media is doing their best to ignore Ron Paul, though it's just a matter of time before David beats Goliath here.

Though I'm 52, I've donated to a presidential campaign for the 1st time in my life - to Ron Paul.  While the chances are slim that Ron Paul will be president, at least the message of true American values is gaining momentum.  You'll see the other candidates start copying Paul now, though it will be just lip service and they won't follow through.
If we had used some old-fashioned foreign diplomacy perhaps we wouldn't be in this Iraq quagmire, but that wasn't the plan the US and Israeli governments agreed upon.  It was predefined that Iraq would be invaded regardless of what the evidence showed.
Get things straight in America before you go messing with someone else's, Mr President.  The US government is partly to blame by standing idly by while the Israelis carry out atrocities against Palestinians and Muslims daily.  Don't blame everyone else because you have NO exit strategy - you should have considered the repercussions before you started down this path.

Ron Paul voted against the Iraq War from the very beginning, unlike the hypocrites in Congress (Hillary, et al) who change their opinions as the political winds blow.
Maybe it's time for a change and we must put someone with MORAL INTEGRITY in the White House!  RON PAUL needs to be heard as a voice of reason!
Ron Paul from all that I have watched and read has never waivered (flip-flopped) with his message of hope to the voting public. People who vote will elect him.
I want to speak to the voters about Dr. Paul. If you are a democrat and like what you hear, you can only truely support Ron's message by voting for him. This will mean voting in the republican primary. How do I do this? you ask. You simply make a trip to the local Board of Elections and change your party, either to republican or independent. This will take a few minutes to do, then come to the poll and vote. To the voters with the means , Ron needs a DVD made of critical speaches that can be given out to friends or family or co-workers, primarily people who vote or this DVD can be e-mailed and fwd to others or downloaded and burned to spread Ron's message. Everyone I know has e-mail or a DVD player. I 100 supporters of Dr. Paul did this the message will spead to places it wouldn't have ever reached. We can use technology for the good of mankind.
America needs Ron Paul as President.  We need someone that is going to deal with issues here in the United States such as illegal immigration, and income taxes.  He makes sense for our country, especially now.  The Democrates in Congress just want to keep spending money we don't have to house illegals, and fund way too many social programs for illegals as well.  We need to wake up America.  One question I do have is why are we having debates in Spanish?  We all know that if someone has become an American citizen they are required to speak english.  Lets stop making it so darn easy for these illegals to live in our country please, lets protect our borders and stop invading other countries.
Got it.

It's our fault that the Fascistic Islamists kill innocent people--even ones that believe in them.

Ron Paul is a flake, and his supporters are flakes.
Ron Paul, is telling the truth;  Not what everyone wants to hear, but we need to hear!
When you consider that the closet opinion to Dr. Paul's on the Iraq War is Barach Obama's, who said recently that we should be out by the end of 2008, it's obvious that Dr. Paul is the only committed Anti-War, Anti-Imperialism choice in this election. The problem with candidates like Obama is that they (he) are strongly pro-globalist, which so greatly threatens our national sovereignty, both economically and politically. We've seen the incredible job losses created by NAFTA and we know the corruption that exists within the U.N., so to continue in that direction makes no sense for our nation. I know there are many Democrat voters out there that want to see the war end, but what they seemingly can't admit is that their own party has betrayed them time and time again during the Bush (Neo-Con) era. The war could have been stopped if they had simply shown the same kind of courage that Dr. Paul did and will in the future. With that in mind, I am changing my voter affiliation to (gulp) the Republican party in hopes of electing Ron Paul and cleaning out the Neo-Cons. I've also come to the opinion that big government will always result in big tyranny, no matter how sweetly sold to the public. Thanks.
You know what I find most interesting, is that the media is not even going to mention all of this. The fact that many Democrats are going to change affiliation just so they can vote for Ron Paul. The way the Republican are going to see will be something lame like "The country has realized that it is our parties ideas that has made this country America!" Yeah right, people want Ron Paul no matter what party he is from; period.
Ron Paul is the most thoughtful & intelligent of the candidates running for President. Getting involved in running the rest of the world spawns terrorists. This country would be better served by letting them work through their own problems. We shouldn't have cost of being the world's babysitter when there are needs in this country which should be more of a priority. I'll be voting for Ron Paul in the primary & hopefully in the general election as well! Those 'top tier' guys just don't impress me. They'd bankrupt the USA over Iraq & the rest of the Middle East! It should be the patriotic duty of everybody who believes in liberty & keeping our freedoms to get out there & vote for Ron Paul! It's NOT flakey to value our liberty over big government control over everything & everybody!
I can't wait for the primaries, because after the intial flurry of same, Ron paul will thankfully a memory, gone and good ridence...After which, maybe he and Dennis Kucinich can hole up somewhere and have a contest to see which one can come with the most ridiculous policies....

Paul's sole attribute to the political process is providing great content for the editorial cartoonists, they don't have to change a thing, he's a real life characiture....He knows he asbsolutely no chance of doing anything other than being disruptive, so he makes his outlandish claims, being such a total ass, he's an embarassment to the process...

Please bring on the primaries and a welcomed end to having to hear anything about this dunce.
I love Ron Paul.  I wasn't sure an honest politician even existed..  Now I know.
I will be switching my party affiliation to Republican so I can vote for Ron Paul in the primaries. As a person who looks at someones character first before their party affiliation, I feel like there is nobody that eve comes close to Ron Paul. I've never been so taken by a political figure before. If this man can accomplish just a fraction of the things that he talks about it would hopefully put this country back on it's track. I pray to God that we as a country are worthy to have a leader like him and that it does happen.
Ron Paul is the best candidate out there for President.  He is the only candidate that does not flip flop on the issues. I too am one of the individuals that has changed my party, and I am now a registered Republican just so I can vote for Ron Paul in the Primaries. He is the only candidate that wants to improve the quality of life for American citizens, not only by changing our taxation, but by protecting our borders, and not invading other countries for the sake of power or in order to save face.  I am ex-military, and I do believe in protecting our country, but right now we are NOT protecting it, it is being invaded everyday from Mexico, and our troops are elsewhere.  I live in California, and I see these illegals and unfortunately have to deal with it on a daily basis.  Hundreds of illegals coming from Mexico, who is protecting us from that?  Believe me when I say we need protecting here, because not only are the Mexicans coming over the border by the hundreds everyday, I am certain there are others who are using the Mexican borders to gain access into our country.  We need to address and fix the issues at home before we try to fix other countries. Retaliation for 9/11 was not the reason for our attacks on Iraq, and if you believe that the media has corrupted your brain. It was all about power, money, and oil.  Wake up America, Do what is right for our Country, Vote for Ron Paul.
All I have to say... for every instance my voice is silenced, I will speak louder.
Ron Paul is a glimmer of hope for this country.  He speaks in common sense terms and educates the masses about what they need to know.  Thanks MSN for giving us a chance to be heard.  The internet is giving the common man a chance to be respected.
Ron Paul will be the greatest president this country have ever had. He will restore our personal liberties, get the government out of our bedrooms, abolish the IRS...and best of all make american commerce the envy of the world once again.

RON PAUL 2008!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this contradiction:

"Although Paul’s strong internet following has not translated into stellar fundraising numbers for his campaign (although he did have more cash on hand than McCain at the end of June) "

I'd say that's pretty stellar....
Our country has a practice of swearing in our Presidents. They swear an oath to uphold the Constitution. Do you think Bush ("...constitution is a g-damn piece of paper") has done that?
Do you think the Republican candidates who continue to kiss Bush's ass will abide by the Constitution?
We are in an "illegal war" ...Congress must declare war not the ahem "decider". Bush is not a true Republican, if you don't think so, why has he increased our debt and dragged us into a war  that has accomplished nothing positive?
How many 9/11 attackers were Iraqi ? How many were Saudi ?  Why aren't we looking for "evil doers" in Saudi Arabia ? Is it because the Shieks are long time
dinner pals of Daddy Bush? HMMM.

Our country is in deep financial trouble...can you say "deficit" ? Tax and spend Democrats might have people's interests in mind but they can't do the math...passing the buck onto the next generation can only work so long. Besides Socialism has been tried in other countries... If you want to help the world,
spend YOUR time, and YOUR money on helping people.
Nothing wrong with a grass roots approach to helping people.

We need honesty to solve our problems, and some problems are best solved by leaving Government out
of the equation or minimizing their influence.
Do we really need to be the "World Police"?  Why?
Is it to protect our "National interests?" That's code for oil folks - Blood for oil so Americans can keep their air conditioners running full blast hop in the Suv and shit on the rest of the world.

Do we really need to continue to send our sons and daughters to foreign lands to protect big business interests? Why do we spend so much on "defense" ?
Anybody ever think those expenditures have been audited? Do you think there's a vested interest in keeping those defense contracts flowing? I guess if you used to run Haliburton you'd like defense contracts wouldn't you?

Yet we accept Politics as dirty, shrug and eat another donut...great job America. If you think it won't get worse, it will...just keep voting in the same type of people...doesn't matter whether you vote Republican or Democrat either. Same shit, different day.

Who does that leave? If the media has it's way Hillary or one of the components of "Rudy McRomney".
That's not real choice, that's more of the same.

Ask yourself why is the media scared of Ron Paul?
Why hasn't Ron Paul become a household name, despite winning or placing high in the recent debates?
Why is supporting the Constitution, the very underpinning of this country somehow a bad thing?

Please take the time to research. I did. Like many of you I thought Ron Paul was just another stiff, my mistake, I believed the media. Then I did the research. I don't agree with Ron Paul on every issue.
So what? He's got the main points down and has a track record of voting for US and the Constitution.

He'll get my vote.  Don't make the mistake of letting the media and big business make your decision for you, look where that got us in the last few elections!

On Youtube.com a fellow posted an old campaign ad from Eisenhower's re-election campaign of 1956 which showed a young fellow, enjoying a college football game and then quickly transforming him to a battlefield holding a walkie-talkie. The ad basically says "Aren't you glad you can urge your team to victory in the stands rather than on the battlefields of Korea?"

Should you also be reminded that it was Robert Dole himself who said during his vice-presidential debate with Walter Mondale that if we total up all the dead and wounder from all the "Democrat wars" over the past half-century it would run in the millions?

This idea about "sounding like a Democrat" shows how shallow politcal reporting is. If you had any sense of history (or study history for that matter) you would realize what Ron Paul is trying to do and that is to restore the traditional Republican policy of non-interventionism to a party that's been hijacked by ex-Democrats (Southern Burbons) and ex-Trotskiests (neocons) kicked out of the Democratic Party by the Progessive Republicans and the far-left (McGovernites) that took it over in 1972. It's a policy that served the country well under GOP Presidents like Harding, Coolidge and Hoover and will so again.
One thing that I've noticed after a couple of months of reading up on Dr. Paul and reading the various forums, is that his detractors rarely say anything of substance. It's almost always "he's wacko", "he's stupid", or something along those lines. I'm willing to listen to his detractors, if they would actually SAY something, other than engaging in preschool playground foolishness.

I'll tell you what's "whacko": even CONSIDERING a pre-emptive nuclear strike against ANY nation...period. There is no pride in being a nation of imperialist warmongers. We must rely on diplomacy and trade to spread the message of liberty, not armed force.

I do not agree with every one of Dr. Paul's positions, but a principled man who has stood by his ideals for as long as he has deserves to be considered. Those of you who want someone who promotes family values, morals, and the highest ethical standards need look no further. Not only does he promote these values, he lives them.

RON PAUL 2008
RE Bruce in Nevada: This is an excellent essay summarizing the whole thought process as to why our foreign policy isn't working: http://www.antiwar.com/paul/?articleid=9672
I was a democrat, but now I'm going to join the Republican party just to vote in the primaries for Ron Paul!
Bruce: "Got it.  It's our fault that the Fascistic Islamists kill innocent people--even ones that believe in them.  Ron Paul is a flake, and his supporters are flakes."
No, Bruce, it is not our fault that murderers kill innocent people, but we are responsible for our actions: Our government has been sticking its nose where it doesn't belong and now it, through our honorable military, has ALSO killed THOUSANDS of 'innocent' people - to call a mother and child killed by accidental American gunfire or missile fire 'collateral damage' and think that rationalization will satisfy the mourning father/brothers/uncles/cousins is pure hypocracy, not to mention ignorant.  It has been the American government's POLICY in foreign affairs which has given rise, worldwide, to hatred and violence towards the western culture and America specifically.  This will continue until we STOP meddling and get back to protecting this country and our borders.  If we don't 'live and let live' then we will not be left alone and never know peace.  come on, Bruce, it's just like the Hatfields and McCoys, you KNOW that we have to step back or this feuding will continue down GENERATIONS!
I say this with all seriousness. The country will probably disintegrate and be carved up the Chinese if Ron Paul does not win. It will take time, but we are on the road to perdition.

America needs Ron Paul more than ever, and everyone who supports Ron Paul loves him as he is the closest thing to family we have ever seen in government.

Ron Paul, for what is just, what is right, and what is our Nation's root modus, the Constitution and Freedom and Liberty for All.
Ron Paul needs our financial support.  He is up against a lot of special interest money.  Can you imagine how much the health insurance companies would rather have Hillary Clinton's plan(universal insurance) than have a common sense doctor making medical decisions for the country?  He is right on the war.  He is right about a smaller scope of government.  Please spread the word. Too many people don't know what a great choice they are missing.
Ron Paul is the last American Hero! If he does not win the Neo-Cons and Corporations will take away the last of our freedoms with Human Implant RFID Chips, And expanding the war and driving the Country into Hyper-Inflation for an economic depression worse than the Great Depression. Get your voice heard because he is America's last hope. Be Active Join the ReVoLuTiOn In Your City: http://ronpaul.meetup.com/citites
9-11 was an inside job. Check out "september clues" on youtube.  It raises some hard answered questions!
I love Ron Paul!
In the 1990s, when Rep. Ron Paul was objecting on the House floor to Clinton's military interventions in Kosovo and other hot spots, he didn't sound like a Democrat. He fit right in with many Republicans arguing against the interventions. Today, many Republicans are embracing Bush's war with Democrats (belatedly) opposing it. But Ron has been a consistent defender of peace (through strength, nonintervention and free trade) since the 1970s and does not pick favorite wars based on what party is running them. Right or wrong, Ron's vision is based on principle, not politics, and that is why is he respected by almost everyone who is familiar with him.
I think it's funny that so many people denounce Ron Paul simply because he does what he says and says what he does.  As if honesty in a politician is something unsavory, and that Americans *really* want a dishonest liar that will promise no nation building, responsible fiscal policy, and reduced government and do the exact opposite once he steps into office.  The media today just disgusts me.  I had family on the other side of the iron curtain in the 1980s in Warsaw and it's disturbing to see our media act more like Pravda than what it once was in the 1970s.
The only thing I don't like about Ron Paul is that he wants to abolish social security. That will mean social insecurity for our children and future generations. As it is, our seniors cannot make ends meet.
Otherwise he will be my choice for president.
Go get them Paul
Someone above said "You finally have a choice - a Doctor, not a Lawyer. A Statesman, not a Politician. Someone with real integrity, and a vision for America based upon the foundation of this Great Country. Why would you consider anyone else??" Allow me to second this!
