Edwards' Iraq ad response

Posted: Thursday, September 13, 2007 11:20 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Mark Murray
As we mentioned earlier, tonight, the Edwards campaign is buying two minutes of airtime on MSNBC to respond to Bush's speech on Iraq.

Here are some excerpts from Edwards’s ad:

"Unfortunately, the president is pressing on with the only strategy he's ever had - more time, more troops, and more war."

"In January, after years of evidence that military actions cannot force a political solution, the president announced a military surge to force a political solution. In May, he vetoed a plan to end the war, demanded more time to show the surge could work, and Congress gave it to him. Now, after General Petraeus reports the surge has produced no progress toward a political solution, what does the president want? More time for the surge to work, when all of us know it won't."

"But Congress must answer to the American people. Tell Congress you know the truth -- they have the power to end this war and you expect them to use it. When the president asks for more money and more time, Congress needs to tell him he only gets one choice: a firm timeline for withdrawal."

It is now official. We now know the truth. Bush wants permanent American bases and presence in Iraq much like S. Korea. We now have evidence that republicans hate America and have an attitude of arrogance with the US military. How can any republican support permanent troop surge in Iraq? Our boys and girls protecting Iraqis from themselves(this is the bitter truth. It is country men killing fellow countrymen and AMERICANS) instead of protecting our borders from the real threats out there. Shame on anyone that can still support this administration and their policies.
What I am really waiting for is George W. Bush's speech. After all he has only outlined his "Strategy for Iraq" about every three weeks for nearly five years now and nothing he says ever results in anything, nothing ever is done, no improvement is ever made. Perhaps that's because his strategy is that of an ingnorant and incompetent moron who hasn't got the slightest idea of what he has gotten us into, and didn't have any idea at the time he started the war. But that's okay for Bush and his party. As long as young Americans keep dying and the country keeps flushing huge amounts of its treasury down the toilet of a failed war, they appear to be satisfied. At least they seem to want to keep the status quo, and to that end they keep coming up with a new third rate mouthpiece and proposing "A strategy for Iraq." But its the same old failed strategy; "patience, friends with Iraq, security for the Iraqi people, let them take over their own destiny(I love this one; we invaded, destroyed, killed, occupied and disgraced them as we toppled the only stable government they had known in centuries and now we want them to " have the freedom seek thir own way.") and let Iraq become a beacon of Democracy in the Middle East." Iraq is a nation with a History of 4000 years of ethnic strife and 1500 years of religious strife and they are not going to change because some ludicrous clown in Washington says "We want them to be free."
John Edwards is a joke.  He is polling at anywhere from seven to eleven percent nationwide in his own party.  That's Democrats talking.  They don't like him.  They don't trust him.  It's time for Edwards to pack it in.
John Edwards bought two minutes of air time because that's the only way anyone will listen to him.  I think he should go back to being a lawyer.  I won't miss him.
I continue to be highly amused by those on the right who are attacking John Edwards for speaking the truth.  Instead of thoughtful discourse, there is name-calling punctuated by snide comments.  I'm waiting for the characterization of him as a sleazy trial lawyer who wants to lead this nation into socialism with universal healthcare.  Of course, I'm sure there is somebody out there somewhere who will also say Ann Coulter was right.  It's that kind of sophisticated argument and oratory that makes me so proud to be an American.  Put down your flags for a minute and wake up, folks!  The right declared war on you in 1981 and they haven't let up since.
If you have bought into their dialogues and self serving agenda , then you must have ED or your frustrated.

How stupid America lets these Washington Paper Hangers use post auto suggestion to captivate their minds. The Clinton serving agenda is a fine example. she is he!! bent on changing the major moral issues. Her soap box is splattered with common dialogue of a liar, misconception , more like goose stepping! She has not one New Issue which has brings for ""NEW" !

If the present setting Senators had all the right answers , then why are we still at war, why  is the 12 million Illegals wandering our streets and protesting their demands in our face, why is the issue of border security not enforced as the Federal law is written, why are Veteran hospitals turned into a garbage dump , why are Veterans left holding the bag to battle the war of being healed after serving on the battle fields which these Paper hangers voted for!!!!!

Yes, Your Washington Paper Hanger wants """WANTS"" always ""WANTS"", when it comes to those who voted your vote is the last time you will ever have anything to say!!!!  The self serving Paper Hanger is a :::"""""LIAR""""""" because his self serving agenda has nothing """Just like a bucket with no bottom""""!  They will """Promise the moon and we have gotten the south side of hell""""", They have committed to a  ""YES VOTE""" and when the issue failed,  they flip flopped to a  ::NO:: vote""" This is not leadership.. this is the self serving dialogue of a image hunting fool!!!

America is not commanded to Vote for these who seek to buy the White House,, Are we so stupid to be lead by :::POST AUTO SUGGESTION???????

Where is your MIND America????
The Bible tell us what a false prophet is and what a true prophet is. The false prophet will say things are going great and all will be well. He says what is good to hear and what is against reality and the facts. The true prophet does not add brush marks to make it look good with no consequences. The true prophet first of all speaks truth and suggests humility. America is facing a cross roads as a great nation. Only God can deliver us. Ask yourself "what are the true signs of the times"? What got us into Iraq and what got us into this housing mess?
To those of you who speak of John Edwards as honest or a man of integrity--I want to puke my guts out all over the place.  For crying out loud, the man made millions of dollars chasing ambulances.  He made millions with frivilous lawsuits that have driven our healthcare prices sky high.  He and his kind are the reason that you can't afford healthcare.  And now you want to vote him president?  I guess you must also be the same that can't afford an education.  I would rather see Kerry, Hillary, or Obama president before that ambulance chasing, hypocritical, lying scumbag with a haircut that costs more than you make in a week as president.  Please, please, please before you use words like "honest" or "integrity" look them up in the dictionary and make sure you know what they mean.
Our pathetic president has so convinced himself of his righteousness, that he has become dillusional.
We need an "eject" mechanism in our form of government much like parliament has a vote of no confidence. It is inhumane for a nation and world to endure such grave chronic incompetence and it's very dangerous consequences until a date specific on a calendar at the end of a term.
That's similar to getting in a car with a totally wasted, wreckless, dangerous drunk driver and NOT do anything... until you get to your destination. Actually, now that I think about it - it's a pretty accurate and fitting analogy of our situation today.
It takes courage and a real risk to go up on TV like this. I am proud of all that Edwards has proposed and done on his campaign trail. Mike- You can't complain that he takes his money and uses it for going to New Orleans. Did you go and do anyting about it? Or that he is spending it agian tonight. A man who is making a political risk like this must a very important message.

The Middle East has been volitle territory long before we went in there, our first skirmish was actually in the 1790's not long after America began.

Everyone agrees that the current policies have been a mess. But securing the area after leave will be the challenge of the next president. And that is going to be difficult and painful.

For all of whose who wanted this war- thanks. Whatever happens during the exit will be on your shoulders. Those who are willing to face that challenge -head on-should be admired.
I find the lack of grammer and over abundance of vitriol both for and agains Mr. Edwards depressing.  He is entitled to his opinion, whether I agree or not.  The rude behavior of choosing to address the President of the United States without using his full name of President Bush is a calculated insult to all of us.
MSN please post this important issue.

America is being invaded by Mexico!

Not one shot has been fired.

This invasion is taking place every where. From the point of double translation ""Press # 1 for English.. Press # 2 for Spanish  ""Mexican"". Banks, communications services, Media,, Medical, law enforcement. Everything must be translated to Mexican!

Our low income services have been taken over by the Illegals and those who support the Illegals. We American tax payer have come to accept being mobed by the Illegal. Our nation community services can no longer give the tax payer these services as the Mexican has broken the bank, they fill our prisons ad murder on our streets, form drug gangs, smuggle thousands more Illegals into the country every day!

This is a issue,And the Paper Hangers in Washington have tabled this issue! Washington will not turn the power of enforcement over to the local and state law enforcement!!!

As the wars in the Mideast seem inportant to those Paper Hangers in Wahington  """We as a Nation are being invaded""". Are we again going to stand by till there is no solution """?????
Liberal site+Liberal Writers=FALSE INFORMATION(A.K.A. These "quotes")
I have been vascillating for awhile on which democratic candidate I will vote for.  Leaning strongly towards Edwards and maybe  Mike Gravel. One thing I know for sure is that we need to get of of this disastrous war and NOW!  I like Gravel's fire  and Edward's honesty and integrity--- even if he spends too much money on  haircuts.  That is peanuts compared to what this administration has done to our country.
Well said, Amy from GA! Edwards is willing to admit it when he realizes he was wrong, tell people with a lot of money what they DON'T want to hear, and campaign on issues like ending poverty that aren't so rock-star glamorous. He does these things because he has a conscience and acts from it rather than covering his tracks all the time or refusing to come out with specifics (i.e. Hillary and Obama).

If the media would pull out the state by state polls that pit the Democrats against the Republicans (rather than national polls that only pit the Dems against each other) they'd see results that are closer to the actual election and that show Edwards is doing far better than the media portray him to be doing. Think national polls mean anything? Gore won the national election by over 50,000 votes, but so what. A lazy and unethical media is part of the problem in this election. Edwards deserves a better shake than what he's getting.
bravo mr. edwards!bravo!
The President spoke clearly and though much like what has said before, he not only has much more respect for The General, and does not "betray" his country by changing his course of action, he made it very clear what his motivations are. The Democrats do not listen nor hear very well, and their theories and implications and plans are dangerous. Anyone who cannot see this is being foolhardy and lives in  dream world. Get real or get out, simple as that. This country does not need to look foolish any longer because  some people do not understand what it means  to be strong to win.
"It is time to end this war."  Enough said. Bravo John, America, wake up.
John Edwards is the only winnable Democratic.  He understands that Americans AT HOME are suffering and have alot of their needs ignored and unmet because of Bush's spending of ONE BILLION DOLLARS per day on this fabricated war in Iraq.  The American People at home need a PEOPLE'S DEFENSE FUND for affordable and
comprehensive health care regardless of health issue or pre-existing conditions.  Our cities are falling apart. Many American cities, large and small, are over one hundred years old and in need of a complete
rebuild of their infrastructure.  Why not create a NATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE FUND using low waged and unemployed Americans to do the work and pay them well for doing it.  Something like the Civilian Conservation Corp that built most of America's parks and highway systems. Yes, we need to rebuild New Orleans and the Mississippi and Alabama Gulf Coasts
which sustained a hard hit from Katrina where today
many of still living in FEMA trailers with no homes to return to because the insurance companies have not paid many fo their claims.  Floridians are still trying to rebuild and recover from at least 3 hard hits from hurricanes over the last 2 to 3 years.

It's time we focus on AT HOME ISSUES.  I CAN'T THINK OF A BETTER USE OF DEFENSE FUNDS THAN ON OUR VERY OWN PEOPLE WHO NEED HELP NOW!

Do we have to wait another few years, while Bush continues to funnel billions into rebuilding Baghdad and Iraq, or can we act now to divert to funds to help out people AT HOME and REBUILD OUR CITIES
to avoild another Minneapolis Bridge Disaster from happening in another American city any day now because cities and counties are just barely holding themselves together before another disaster will happen--and it will, if we don't act now.

JOHN EDWARDS WANTS TO ACT NOW.  HE IS SPENDING TIME
IN NEW ORLEANS HELPING GRASSROOTS GROUPS SHOVEL UP DEBRIS FROM STREETS AND NEIGHBORHOODS AND TO HELP HAND AND HAND WITH LOCAL FOLKS WHO JUST WANT TO GET THEIR LIVES BACK TO SOME SORT OF NORMALCY.  I SAY SEND JIMMY CARTER AND HIS SUCCESSFUL HABITAT FOR HUMANITY TO NEW ORLEANS TO HELP WITH THE REBUILD.

JOHN EDWARDS KNOWS, AND I THINK MOST AMERICANS KNOW NOW FOR SURE, IT'S GONNA TAKE EACH ONE OF US HAND AND HAND TO HELP EACH OTHER GET BACK ON OUR FEET.  LET'S DO IT AND ALSO GET TODD PENNINGTON INVOLVED AS WELL.
Nielsens are in.  5 people saw Edwards.  Matthews and Olbermann were 2.  A couple of dogs, thats 4.  Hillary was flipping through the channels looking for Fox News, and stopped in for 10 seconds or so, that's 5.  Liz had an important meeting and couldn't see it.  Something about getting Ann Coulter involved in some fund raising scheme.
Saw the ad. Edwards is one Democrat who seems to have found a spine and is ready to lead the Democrats in taking on Bush over Iraq NOW without doing the political triangulation of waiting to do something about Iraq until after the election.  Run with it John!
We need a leader.  I would love it if congress did exactly as John Edwards has stated : No funding no timeline No excuses.  Congress could have done it.  One veto from Bush and congress does whatever he wants.  Edwards is right about the war, about congress, about healthcare, about lobby money.  He has courageously lead the other candidates on these issues.  He is a leader among the candidates.  We need him for the White House.
If the US pulls out of Iraq, then the US execepts defeat. The terrorists have defeated Spain and Spain has done what they were told to do. If the US is defeated in Iraq what hope does the rest of the world have? If terrorist control the oil in Iraq then they have unlimited resourses to continue taking control over as many countries as they choose. Who will trade with the US when threatened with bombs in their cities?, Who will come to our aid when we have been defeated in Iraq?. Perhaps you will be reading about the defeat of the US in Iraq to your grandchildren from the history books If the Islamic dictators will allow history books to be written. DEFEAT IN IRAQ IS UNEXECEPTABLE!!!
I find Mr. Edwards the most disingenuous of the
Democratic candidates.  He finds it amazingly easy to
complain about the Dems. in Congress not doing enough
to end the war; yet he gave up his seat in the Senate
to pursue a four year Presidential Campaign.  He knew
there were hard battles to be waged against this
Administration; but let others fight these fights
while he criticized thier efforts from the sidelines.
His statements would have more validity if he had at
least made an attempt at retaining his Senate seat and not allowing it to go to the Republicans.  By
dropping out of the Senate to start his Presidential
bid four years early he gave us a true example of
"Cut and Run"!
Ouch. Seems some people need a reality check on what the President says. The troop withdrawal Bush set forth is not because of success, it is because the Armed Services are stretched so thin they don't have enough troops to send in when some folks come back. You are only supposed to be deployed so long. Everything Bush says about bringing troops back is because there are none to deploy after some come back, there are no new recruits. Get it?

I advise you all to get past the lies of the past several years of this administration, and contact your representatives in Congress, whether Democratic or Republican, and let them know your thoughts.

Bush stated last night he plans on leaving 100K troops in Iraq by the time he leaves office. Talk about a Bush lame duck move, he is more worried about history and his legacy and doesn't even realize he is simply making it worse for both. This is something Nixon did with Vietnam, this is such a mess but we are proud nation so let's have some more Americans killed for no apparent reason. That is not pride, that is the incompetence and irrationality of a President who knows he can do nothing else with his time left except keep troops in Iraq.

The Democrats control the Congress, but without about nine Republicans in the Senate they cannot override Bush's vetoes.

If I were a Republican I would wonder what Bush is doing to the 2008 elections, talk about giving ammo to Democrats both in the Presidential and Congress campaigns. Just when you think he couldn't do things worse, he does.
