More a nice feature than debate

Yahoo’s MashUp "debate" was supposed to give Internet viewers the chance to edit together what candidates said via Yahoo’s JumpCut Web site. But, as Wired reports, that feature hit the cutting-room floor. The result is simply a new election feature with interviews by Charlie Rose and Bill Maher with the eight Democratic presidential contenders. It’s an interesting way to organize and house candidates’ responses on issues, but the joint Huffington Post-Yahoo!-Slate feature is certainly not a true debate, of course, because the candidates cannot interact with each other and don’t appear together. But what voters do at least get is the candidates’ views on Iraq, health care and education broken down by issue and on video.

The toughest questions came from Maher. In one, he asks Clinton about her war vote: "Why should Americans vote for someone who can be fooled by George Bush?" Clinton laughed it off and said, “It was a little more complicated than that. I sought out expert opinions from a wide variety of sources. …At the time I made it very clear I was against a pre-emptive war.”

There is a voting feature on the site, and according to results at 11:30 am today, Obama was leading Clinton 32%-29% with Edwards third at 15%, then Kucinich with 8%, Richardson 7%, Biden 5%. Voting closes Sept. 21.

Bill Maher asks Clinton about her war vote:
"Why should Americans vote for someone who can be fooled by George Bush?"

Why should ANYONE VOTE FOR SOMEONE WHO CAN BE FOOLED BY GEORGE BUSH ??

Hillary Clinton is completely unethical !!
She voted for war to make herself look 'strong'
She voted for war to further her politcal 'career'
Hillary Clinton voted for war to make herself look 'Presidential'
She voted for a 'pre-emptive' war.
George Bush called it an 'elective war'!!

We didn't HAVE to go to war !!

But, Hillary wanted to look 'Presidential'
She traded all those American and Iraqi lives to further her ambitions !!
All those deaths for Hillary's ambition !!

Hillary Clinton, the evil of banality

I try to see what his followers find so inspiring about him, what makes him so different from, "conventional", politicians, and all I hear is the same old thing.

Richardson is a lot more unconventional in his approach to ending the war than Obama is here, as is Kucinich. Edwards is much more radical in his stance too. Obama sounds like Clinton, or Biden, or Dodd. Is this because they are in the senate and have actual votes to stand behind?
Way to go Hillary. A very professional, intelligent and correct response to the war question.
Hillary doesn't know what it is like to get into a war during a debate.  That will change very soon.  She is being treated with kid gloves right now in the social meetings, errrr, debates.  But when she goes one on one with my guys, she better bring more then tea and cookies.
Hillary's answer was pure crap.  She is a robot with no passion.  Gross.
Hillary can't figure out when her husband is messing around with the staff.  How do you expect her to figure out something complicated?

She'll have a chance to laugh off her defeat real soon now.

Hillary hides the fact that she didn't read the National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq and the upcoming war as she was begged to by then Sen. Graham. To be fair, Dodd didn't either and a lot of other Senators. If they'd read it, they'd have a better grasp on the fact that the grounds for war were shaky at best.

Hillary just voted for the war because it was (then) politically the best thing she could do. She didn't count on an inept administration who couldn't prosecute the war successfully (hell, they couldn't even run a 7-11 successfully) and now she's caught in that trap of defending an unsuccessful tar-baby of a war that she voted for.
Excerpt from interview in today's Metro with John Dean, who will be making an appearance tonight in Boston, to promote his new book - Broken Government: How Republican Rule Destroyed the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Branches:

"Republicans just don't know how to govern.  But that's why they are good at running political campaigns, which are basically all about power plays".

"Republicans support the grand powers of the president. Let's say Hillary Clinton gets in; they will attack the person, not the office, just as they did with Bill Clinton.  That's what they've done since they started building up the executive branch during the Reagan years".

John Dean, can't wait to hear you speak tonite on how the Bush Administration and the Republicans broke our government. It's too bad we have thousands of people in this country who don't want to believe it.
Apparently Senator Clinton thinks her vote for the Iraq war is funny.
You are the greatest Hillary. We have a growing group of students who will be voting for you! Stay tough and we can't wait til you become president.Go Clinton!!!!
sierra is just another man who hates women. sierra is his last name. figures....
This is my biggest issue with Hillary Clinton.  That's such a dishonest answer. Everyone in the Country KNEW that vote was to go to war. PERIOD.  I'm OK with her not apologizing for her vote, but to downright lie about it is to take the american voting public for fools. If she would just be honest about this out of the gate---she may have gotten my support!!!
Lewis, Cincinnati, Ohio / one thing hillary has never been accused of is being honest
There's a scene in Denzel Washington's "Devil in a Blue Dress" where shamus Easy Rawlins remonstrates with stone killer "Mouse" over the sudden and precipitate demise of a man Easy had entrusted to Mouse's keeping.

"Well, if you didn't want him killed," says Mouse, baffled. "Why'd you leave 'im wit' me?"

For which Easy has no answer at all.

A vote to give a known proponent of pre-emptive war the clear authority to uncontestedly launch a pre-emptive war that everyone but the dumbest or most venal among us knew he was going to launch (i.e., after that vote, Congress no longer had its traditional authority to say, in any way, shape, or form, the conditions under which that war would be fought), is, in the real world, a vote for pre-emptive war  --  and all the attempted "plausible deniability" in the world can't change that fact.

Like Barnard Shaw in his later years, I stopped listening to what people say a long time ago.

I just watch what they do.

Don't get fooled too often, any more  --  and never by the same person twice.
MK MO thank christ she is smarter than you!
Senator Clinton the next president of the United States!
I hope John Edwards agrees to be her VP.
'You are the greatest Hillary.'

The greatest what ?
The greatest opportunist ?
The most unethical candidate ?
What midnless crap !!

We have a growing group of students who will be voting for you! Stay tough and we can't wait til you become president.Go Clinton!!!!
the girls at UNF

Are you ALL POSTING THIS ?
Who posts as 'the girls' ?
Do Clinton cultists have multiple personalities ??
Say hello to yourself for me.

What's UNF, anyway ??
Is that where Clintonistas get 'educated' ?

The three faces of Eve.....
NO Lewis that vote was taken to show Saddam that we were united in order to give the president more leverage. No one ever suspected that we would become an aggressor nation under the leadership of GWB.
That's what Bush should do at his next press conference.  When someone like Gregory or Helen Thomas asks about something not going exactly right in Iraq, he should laugh and say "Its a little more complicatd then that."  Maybe shake his head like Hillary does when she talks.

The liberals on this site would explode from all their rage.

Yet, many of them support Hillary.  Go figure.
Sierra seems to forget that there were a few hundred other members of Congress who also voted for the Iraq resolution.  But we shouldn't let facts get in the way of an old-fashioned stoning, should we?
Really scary, come on people it is reall scary to think that Clinton said she actually asked for advice and those people she sought advice from were the ones that said to go to WAR, hell won't those be the same people she seek advice from if she is elected for President!!!! That was not a good response from her, and I really just made up my mind, there is NO WAY that i will vote for CLINTON!! My vote goes to OBAMA!! I want someone that has forsight and can deter from the masses!!!

How about, "It's hard work", or "We're making progress"? How's YOUR head?
Carrie: 'Sierra seems to forget that there were a few hundred other members of Congress who also voted for the Iraq resolution.'

Carrie, a MAJORITY of Democrats in the House voted NO to war !!
In the Senate, Ted Kennedy voted NO, Dick Durbin voted NO, REAL Democrats voted NO !!
Hillary didn't read the National Intelligence Estimate !!
As you have staed numberous times, she READ THE POLLS !!
She was a follower, not a leader !!
Barack Obama ALWAYS opposed the war !!

Gee, mommy !! They voted for war !!
Why can't I vote for war ??
Gee, mommy !! mitt Romney took dirty contributions.
Why can't I take dirty campaign contributions ??
The press is soooooo unfair to me !!

Hillary was 'fooled' by George Bush
Hillary was 'fooled' by Bill Clinton.
(I never had sex with that woman)

Hillary is not a very smart woamn, is she Carrie ??
Hillary is not a very ethical woman, is she Carrie ?

Hillary Clinton, 15 years of dishonesty, scandal and divisiveness

Welcome back, Carrie....
Have you been 're-educated' ?
Hillary is going to find herself at the hands of a special prosecuter soon enough for all this crappy fundraising, and the "charity" she gives it to. Theres still 40 million dollars out there somewhere from HSU's fund. If you smell smoke in washington dc its probably Hillary burning up the evidence.
The NYT is getting deeper into hot water with the 60% discount ad given to moveon.org, Now several campaigns are asking for that discounted rate. The Times are silent, they know they screwed up bigtime, there is going to be massive lawsuits for price fixing if these ads were discounted and no one else can get them.NBC, CBS, ABC, and MSNBC cannot be silent for much longer... I was glad to see John Edwards was able to get some time to respond tonight Obama/Edwards 08
Iowa Voter,

I agree, while I ordinarily have a generally favorable view of Hillary Clinton, I found her laughter sickening. But I guess it just hit a raw nerve today. A co-workers son is in Iraq, and he just called upset, because his best friend since base camp was killed over there. This war sucks! People who buy into Hillary or others claim that they didn't know Bush would go to war with Iraq when they voted on October 11, 2002, either don't recall the administrations war build up, or are buying into her spin. The Senate tried to pass an authorization that was more restrictive, but it failed. Senators knew when they voted in favor of authorization they were giving Bush the authority to wage war against Iraq. A senator can claim they didn't think Bush would ultimately go to war, but to claim as Clinton keeps claiming that the authorization was only intended to give Bush bargaining power, but he had agreed not to use it without a re-authorization that is a lie! The Senate Democrats tried to get that deal, but failed. The other Senators running for office who voted for the authorization admit that. But Clinton keeps claiming she voted for something she didn't, and that really pisses me off! And watching her laugh and say it is more complicated than that rubbed salt in a wound today.

Why does this wiener sound suspiciously like the poster right before them in this thread? Even the tagline, Obama/Edwards 08, is the same. Hmmmmm...
WOW... Hillary can really laughed at her vote to go to war... How nice...

She didn't bother to even read the NIE & said she did her own research, consulted with her own people & seeked advice from her own advisers (Well, that showed how thorough & experience she was..)  But, Hill.. you still came up with the wrong decision, you still voted for the wrong thing!!!  What kind of experience is that???

It's so easy now that she can say "Well, if I know now what I knew then, I wouldn't have voted for the war.."  Well, you had the chance to know what you know now, then... BUT you decided NOT TO.  So..., I'm learning from your experience Hillary..., I WON'T VOTE for you because I don't want to be in a position 2/3 years from now and say
"WELL, IF I KNOW NOW WHAT I KNEW THEN, I WOULDN'T HAVE VOTED FOR HILLARY!"

So, I'm going with my judgement the first time around by NOT having you as President of the United States to begin with.

Ves- only about 10% of the senate bothered to read the NIE other than the intelligence committee. Probably none of the republicans read it because it is easier to just rubber stamp. The problem is that since this is the first time since Eisenhower that the republicans had a majority in both houses and they were giddy with power.
Hillary's looked insane while responding to Bill Maher's question.  Instead of answering his question, she delved into her scripted response.  And that laugh....
It's so easy now that she can say "Well, if I know now what I knew then, I wouldn't have voted for the war.."

And what would Hillary, or any of these arm chair quarterback Democrats, be like as a leader? Go to war one day, find out a little more information, pull the troops back the next.  No, wait, we were right the first time, go back in.  Nope, poll numbers came out, going down a little, pull back again.  They have the attention span and staying power of a two year old.

Military would be much like Hillary, a yoyo.
Hillary's next main event is the vote from the lettercarriers union.  I saw the magazine and card they sent to the union members.  Why were only democrat people listed on there.  I think the president of the union needs to explain a few things and I think there should be an investigation.
Let's have a Hillary/Ron Paul debate. Ron Paul would show her to be the anti - constitutionalist she really is.
I saw Senator Obama while he was a senator in Illinois, late one night with an interviewer from some college.  What got my attention is he knew why he would not go to war in Iraq, he said what he thought would happen and it did, he understood the culture, the dynamic of the tribal communities.  His intelligence and knowledge grabbed me and I did not see him again until he gave his speech at the Democratic convention, which touched my heart and soul and during that time here in the U.S. everyone was down, confused and off balance.  He really did give me hope, he motivated me to be everything I could be because he believes in this country the way I always have.  If you want to do something with your life, find out what that is, find out what conditions you have to meet and go for it.  This man knows this.  He is enormously intelligent, a real leader, a problem solver, and someone who appears to have been prepared in so many ways to come forth at this time to be out President.  Look at his background of poverty, living outside the United States, being exposed to not only all races of people but differing cultures.  He respects other people's cultures, their beliefs, their lifestyle. Living with one's grandparents can be a very important part on one's life, you learn such love and acceptance. He is willing to put on the table the problem and find common ground to reach a solution, with anyone.

Since the convention I have watched and listened to him very carefully.  The Democrats sent him out there with his book, The Audacity of Hope to get people to vote to overcome the majority in the Senate, he got the House too.  He worked very hard to make this happen.

I would like to see him as a leader with the real hard working, ethical, and gifted people who are now in Washington under his guidance.  Just imagine what we could do in this country and world.

I love it that he taught the constitution and understands the laws of this country.  He obviously studies very carefully, and gathers all the information he can on every issue.  Experience? I just do not understand the Clinton objection? The Senator served the people of his state that could not help themselves and certainly did not do it for the money, he has taught the constitution, nobody ever learns more about a subject than the teacher teaching it.  He is black, he is white, he accepts differences in people and obviously really cares about all the people in this country and world.  He has love in his heart, he has integrity, and he truely has a personal relationship with God the Father and Jesus Christ, not some made up "pass the plate" or be in the world that way because it puts him to some advantage.

I love his laugh.  Having a PhD in Psycology helps me to define him a little differently than most.  His laugh holds no underlying purpose.  He has a family he adores and supports his wife and children.  We wanted when the Clintons were in the White House so much to have a moral administration and voted in the most corrupt people who have ever come together to damage out lives in this country.

I saw late at night Bill Clinton about a month ago in Miami going into a bar, his lemo drove up and these girls came running out, he looked at them with a smile and delight.  He likes what he is doing now and he is doing something of real importance.  I think Bill Clinton loves people, and I think he worked hard to do the best he could but I always worried about his ability to make any decision on his own, especially an ethical one.  Senator Obama has good judgment, it is in his nature to take responsibility for what decisions and the influence his decisions make on other people. All people.

Senator Clinton was almost hated in the United States at one time.  She was not well liked and certainly not respected.  She had her chance with Healthcare, everyone in this country opened up our hearts and hands to these two people to fix things.  She failed and failed again, yet she is bold enough to move to New York and take her place among people where she did not really belong, so did Senator Dole do the exact same thing in North Carolina, she had not been back for years. This shows Hilliary's plan all along to put herself in the political position she is in.

Senator Obama was approached while he was senator of Illinois to run for Senator when the Republican candidate had it sewed up and the Democrats had no hope.  He took the challenge and won.  Again, experience, he had seven years, that is a long time to be Senator in a state like Illinois.  He, just like his activity since he has been Senator in the United States Senate has been keen, meaningful and results oriented.  He has already done so much as a Senator in Washington, and so often in a bi-partison
way.  He does whatever he has to do to get the job done.  A highly organized, motivated for the right reasons, and results oriented individual.  He cares.  I have seen it in his eyes.

I would never go backwards to the Clintons, can you imagine Hilliary running by herself, it would be a joke.  She knows how much people love her husband and she is using him to get elected, even admits it in her speeches.  President Clinton, yes, succeeded in many ways but not without the intent of the Republicans as well and Al Gore's famous vote to fix the deficit.  Remember Ross Perot and his fixed obsession to fix the deficit?  It was not just Bill Clinton.  I believe this man worked very hard and maybe his own lack of having what he needed inside to make a strong decision paid off because he wanted to know what the people wanted him to do.  So, in the end, it was good.  I just do not believe his wife had one thing to do with the prosperity he left behind.

I would never vote for Senator Clinton.  I paid very close attention to her contributions as first lady.  What were they again?  All this experience. I believe her to be politically based, self-serving and to her credit been in the "mix" in Washington long enough to know how to "play it".  This, in my opinion is not considered experience that a President needs to go forward.  She would last only a short time emotionally, what mistakes she would make, she has the ability to convolute, however.  Absolutely not, no way do I see her as some people see her.  I do not look at just the surface.  Who is she, really?  Why has her husband gone to other women, they are in business together, that is all.  Good companions in "gain" and accomplishing a common goal.  It is my personal belief that she may not be compatible to be in a relationship with a man.  Why else is it simply alright for her husband to be allowed without censore to follow his needs where women are concerned. This in itself would not dissuade me from her capabilities but I do not think she is that intelligent, just exposed.

I will vote for Senator Obama.  I sincerely hope the people of this country will pay attention this time and work and sincerely seek out the will of a higher power to know who this country needs at this time to be our President.

I actually belief Senator Obama has lived the life he has lived and has been prepared to be the President of this extraordinary country at this time.
I wonder what format would both leverage the true interactivity of the Internet for voters and be agreed to by the leading candidates?

As one of the co-founders of the first online candidate debates back in 1994, I've outlined a few ideas here:
