Obama delivers economic speech

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
In his first substantive economic policy speech, Obama said Wall Street needs to be more transparent in order to earn the public's trust. Like he did in Detroit while talking to auto workers -- or to a teacher's union when advocating merit pay for teachers -- Obama did not shy away from criticizing the audience he was addressing. In fact, he asked investors to join him "in ushering in a new era of mutual responsibility in America."

"The quick kill is prized without regard to long-term consequences for the financial system and the economy," Obama said to an overflowing room at the NASDAQ market site. "And while this may benefit the few who push the envelope as far as it will go, it doesn't benefit America and it doesn't benefit the market. Just because it makes money doesn't mean it's good for business."

Obama cited the subprime mortgage crisis as an example of this problem. "In theory, this should have allowed mortgage lending to be less risky and more diversified," he said. "But as certain lenders and brokers began to see how much money could be made, they began to lower their standards... Far too many continued to put their own short-term gain ahead of what they knew the long-term consequences would be when those rates exploded. Those consequences are now clear: nearly 2.5 million homeowners could lose their homes."

Obama said there are four steps the country needs to take prevent future problems: (1) create more disclosure and accountability in the housing market by updating the current mortgage rules to prevent fraud and enact tough penalties against lenders who knowingly act in bad faith; (2) restore trust in the rating agencies by investigating the relationship and business practices of rating agencies and their clients; (3) fix a lack of transparency problem in other areas in the market by teaching consumers about the risk involved with credit cards; and (4) ask mortgage institutions to help people who are trying to sell or refinance their homes.

Invoking Franklin Roosevelt, Obama called for everyone, "from CEOs to shareholders, from financiers to factory workers," to work together because "we all have a stake in each other's success because the more Americans prosper, the more America prospers." He said the nation needs "another moment that requires, in FDR's words, a re-appraisal of our values as a nation."

Obama's economic speech:

"If you have it, I'm taking it."
while it's current to assualt the stock decline and housing market woes please look past political points and focus on the larger issues facing the 280 million who don't make the top 3% income. pork barrell spending, tax plans that support the top 3%, outsourcing of us jobs, the cost of the war, the cost of gas eating away our family dollars and the associated rise in costs of consumer goods associated with that increase. in all these examples someone is pulling the profits as the majority suffer.
Perhaps this isn't the correct thread to mention this, however, I was at the March in DC on Saturday. I can't tell you how many nice people I met. These people are ordinary, hard working Americans who were in DC simply because they can't tolerate our government's policies since September 11th. Why is it that the political programs refuse to interview our fellow citizens in prime time?

They are not criminals, they are not drug addicts, they are me and you. We have listened to President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Condi Rice, etc., etc., etc. THEY LIE.

Why isn't the media interviewing Iraqi civilians and American citizens.  We keep being told that it is up to us to change policy. I personally spoke to two 80 year old American citizens. They were purposely arrested. What else are they supposed to do before anyone listens to them? Why are WE being ignored?

Those were decent people in DC on Saturday. And they are out and out ashamed right now of what's happening in Iraq.
yaaaawwwwwnnnnnn. Maybe next time Obama, next time.
The sub prime problem would have never have gotten into play if people were smart enough to read the contracts to begin with. Why the government didn't get into this before is a mystery, but for every rule, there is a loophole.
Obama is anti war to get elected senate
      pro war in the senate
anti war again once he's running for president

he's really a repulican in democrat clothing
less people have it.
Wells Fargo- That's funny! And true!
Brilliant!!!
Based on your other headlines, shouldn't this be,
"Edwards on Obama's Economic Speech"?
Why post the actual speech, when you can cite another candidate's opinion of that speech?
This is a sort of half-assed blog in a lot of ways, with more slant than the floor at the fun house.
Very good speech Obama said it like it should be. Of course the corporate raiders and bottom feeding won't like it and some people who can't see past the end of their nose like "wells fargo" don't like anything.
If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Obama sounds too good to be true. The big biz community doesn't care if a profitable venture they make does damage to America. They understand what they're doing. And Obama, even if he became president could do nothing to get CEOs and financiers to get together with common people to create a gentler and happier kind of capitalism. If he is assuming that these bad things are happening because the big guys upstairs are unaware of damage they are causing and would do right if their mistakes were pointed out to them, this is a wrong assumption. These guys would steal the gold out of their dead brother's teeth. They didn't get rich by being fair and respecting others and abiding by the law. If they suspect that one like Obama would rearrange their jolly little playpens in order for those less fortunate to get a bite of the pie, they can make sure he doesn't get elected. In fact, they are already doing something. They are making sure Hillary gets elected. She knows how the game is played. Ralph Nader is a good example of the chances of a populist getting elected. The only reason they are going with Hillary is because they know a Repub can't get elected after the mess they've made, and their reluctance to help the Dems clean it up.
Isn't it peculiar that most of the right wing naysayers only list one name or an alias. could it be the outing of Darren Pope has driven them underground?
JIrby, Colorado.  You may be right about your assessment, but what I have noticed in most of Obama's speeches is how we as America need to come together to fix our problems.  People taking some responsibility along with our government.  Not the usual promising what the Government should do for everyone.  In this speech he talks about everyone involved should be working together for the benefit of this country.  True getting CEO's together with the workers might be a dream, but at least Obama is talking about it and not trying to promise a chicken in every pot and a new car in every driveway like the old candidates talking points.
Pat, Boston
Did you think the crowd was over the 15k mark? 20k, 100k? Were there as few as 1000 on the pro side?  The coverage to say the least was spotty, and you noted how ignored we are. I was in NewburyPort Sunday, and there were 10 war protester holding signs and standing in a small(But visible)area near Market Sq.  I stood with them and they were as angry and saddened by the war as we.  Good people taking the time to stand for what they believe to be wrong.  I was pleased to meet them and will join them again next week. WE were acknowledged by many passersby and encouraged by the support they showed. But no media!
I did suggest stripping for the definite fact that it would draw a large crowd but it was way to chilly.:)
Rufus Gibbons: Who was Darren Pope and when was he outed?
HP, I honestly couldn't tell. It's hard to judge when you're in the middle of it. I'm glad to see you protesting, however, the media doesn't care. The politicians don't care. I saw 200 people getting arrested right in front of me on principal alone. Young and old. Iraq veterans and civilians.

In a way, it was so sad to watch. There should have been 1 million of us there on Saturday.

Not one politician at the Capitol could spare 5 minutes to say "I'm listening to you". Not one.
The media? Well, OJ was arrested. That's where the advertising money comes in to play.

Every single protestor I talked to knows how stupid people in this country have become. Dumbed down. Perhaps next time the Iraqi civilians should do the protesting. Maybe then people will listen. It's their story.

HP, the next time there's a March in DC I urge you to attend. The more the better.
A beautiful Saturday....
Off from work..............
things to do with the family.........
BBQ's and parties and etc...........

Why would you want to ruin it by going to a stupid protest attended by what, 500 people? and get arrested for doing something stupid?
This is what I like about Obama.  He is a candidate not afraid to speak his mind on the issues even if it's not popular in addition to the usual rhetoric.  The other candidates offer largely rhetoric.

It's not just a candidate's positions on issues that are important (though of course they are).  An intelligent voter must also look at the character of the candidate, whomever that may be.
jerry - and get arrested for doing something stupid?

Because they are.
Obama also has long-term vision, which is so desparately needed in this country.  GO USA!
500? 500 pro-war marchers I'm sure you meant.

Take a look at what's happening in Iraq jerry. Take a minute of your life and look and see what's REALLY going on there. Then tell me you're for this war.

HP, the pro-war marchers were minimal. Only about SEVEN actually marched. The rest rented a little plot of land in the Mall to do their stupid, ignorant chants.
I will do that Pat in Boston, let me know when and where.  I do know October is the next one, will be many all across the country.
I will be there with a very large sign that will read:
"jerry/corpus Christi Texas HATES AMERICA!" On both sides.
JIRBY...
Looks like they are listening..and like it

Update: here's what the experts are saying about Senator Obama's economic policy...

Bill Daley, Former U.S. Secretary of Commerce (1997-2000):

Senator Obama's challenge to business is right on target. If business leaders don't step up and help solve problems in areas like housing, trade policy, health care and energy dependency, there will be a lot of pressure to retreat from market-based solutions and the climate could be more hostile to business.  The kind of reforms Obama is proposing will help lift the incomes of many more people and ensure that American companies can operate freely in markets around the world.   The business community should embrace them.

Orin Kramer, General Partner, Boston Provident Partners, L.P. and Chairman of New Jersey State Investment Council:

Senator Obama's approach to current market conditions is balanced and nuanced. There's a recognition, even among many financial market participants, that limited disclosure of off-balance sheet obligations and contingent liabilities are a problem. The failure of oversight of the rating agencies is a problem because it challenges the core principle underlying bank and insurance regulation. I believe he's the first presidential candidate to address those issues and to think creatively about new regulatory approaches.

Robert Wolf, Wall Street Executive

I am certainly in agreement with Senator Obama that all of Wall Street is awaiting tomorrow's Fed meeting with keen interest. More importantly, financial institutions will be supportive of the Senator's views that products created by and sold by Wall Street professionals need to have complete transparency. This is the right way to do business, both morally and intelligently, in order to establish trust with the investor community and the general public. The key to success in our "free" market society must include an open architecture with respect to our business practices and these practices must reflect the highest ethical standards. I know that many of the messages delivered today by the Senator will gain support by both the private and public sectors.

I was in DC Saturday. Based on what I've seen in marathons and other road reaces that fill the streets of cities, I'd say there were 15-20,000 peace advocates, with maybe a couple of hundred war advocates. Funny thing is the MSM spent as much focus on the pro war people as the 99% on the peace side. One thing I'll grant both sides is that they weer surprisingly respectful of each other given the passions people feel about this.
Darren was a political plant we had been accusing him of it and when someone said he couldn't be found in Myrtle Beach, SC he disappeared from the blog.
Steve, hours before the March began, I went out of my way to speak with pro-war citizens in front of the Capitol. And I agree with you, even though we did not see eye to eye on this issue, we were all quite respectful of each other's views.

Even at the airport waiting to board my flight home, I ended up having a beer with a couple who were 100% pro-war. They were extremely nice but they believe strongly in President Bush and his policies. But at no time did they force their opinions down my throat, and I did not to them either. (Actually, they ended up paying for my beer).

HP, I'll get back to you on upcoming events.
Do we really think that these lenders are making money on the forclosures? The losses will be astounding. The problem is that the majority of these "victims" got huge amounts of cash when they refinanced their homes. Once again some people are now crying that the govt should be involved to protect its citizens from their own stupidity.
Lyn - thanks for the input. Maybe I'm still living in the days of the robber barons. I will be pleased to be surprised by the business community going along with Obama's cause, but I'll have to see it to believe it. From what I've seen so far, I'm looking for Hillary to be elected, but if Obama won, that would be much better.
MSM will never solicit candid opinions from the ordinary American.  They might get an earfull of the truth.  This is what happens when a few own all the main news outlets.  You get the same point of view no matter which channel you switch to.  Try flipping thru 6 cable news channels or buying six national news papers.  the stories are identical word-for-word.  The day of the hard hitting journalist out trying to uncover the real story are gone.
Same S**T view...different day.
I am still looking for anything on this so called "die in" thing that happened Saturday.  Must have been a real snooze fest.

H P Boston:

Now I have a reason to watch CSPAN for your protest march.
I will be on MSNBC too shortly.....
If I find anybody putting Clinton signs in my yard and I use them for the Aggie Bonfire.....
Nice speech, but Obama left a few things out.  At the moment we are borrowing $3 billion per day from Communist China to finance the war.  How does he intend to end the debt?  Doesn't say.  No mention of the Federal Reserve - a private organization that, since 1913, has taken advantage of every citizen in the U.S.  No mention of the FED either.  That is why I am supporting Ron Paul.  Of the candidates, his econonomic policies are the most sound and would best profit our Republic.
OBAMA ALL WAYS SPEAKS HIS MIND
Senator Obama Tells it like it is and hes truthful, thats the reason why hillary wont debate him on issues,  and just say i cant speak on hypotheticals, well how do we suppose to know where u stand stup, vote for me cause im woman she says,
Republicans don't have time to protest.  Too busy working and taking care of their families.
All the candidates yap, yap, yap...why listen?
Why? Because every time you look to TV and commentators you only get snippets and their version.
WE live in a Venus fly trap!
And jerry you are to stupid, and get some reading glasses or sign up for a remedial reading class.
Hi, I'm back.  Any calls for me?
